    Hi! Thank you for your video. May ask you a question? My daughter has received an offer from SBU with the major AOI in Computer Science fall 2024. Is it not the same as the major in Computer Science? A bit confused with that because my daughter has applied to CS. We are now in a process of making the decision which university to choose. Thank you.
    P.S. I found your explanation about AOI in your answer to the other comment. So it looks like we applied as undecided, but we applied to CS. So strange.

    • @arock.
      @arock.  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! thanks for reaching out! AOI in CS means that you have the qualifications to be in the major, but due to high demand, they are not able to offer a seat in the major completely, so they put you're daughter into CS Area Of Interest -- essentially you're in a middle ground: you're daughter is in CS and not in CS at the same time. This is already in a better position compared to undecided as your daughter just needs to complete a few courses to be guaranteed admission into the major rather than having a chance to get admitted. But a good chunk of people that I know that were AOI in CS were able to get into the major because their requirements were less strict than undecided majors.
      When deciding whether or not to commit , make sure to ask your daughter if she's ok with having to work for the major because if she fails or get's below the requirement, then the likely hood that she gets matriculated into the major is slim.

      Hi! Thank you very much for the answer! We have several offers from other universities, so we are still thinking. Just one more question if it’s ok for you. If you had a chance to choose the university again would you choose the SBU? And thank you for sharing.

      @@albinagareeva3501 Hi i'm about to graduate soon, so I'll give an honest review of the cs curriculum here. I personally would not choose to come here again. The CS courses offered here are a bit lackluster and many good professors only teach honors -- which is restricted to honors CS students. Another reason is the lack of good options. After taking the core courses, the elective options are disappointing as they're not always offered and the ones that are interesting are competitive with limited seats or they're being taught by professors that no one wants to be in a class in. This leaves me with classes that I personally don't want to take but I have to take it to graduate. The core classes, however, are genuinely good.
      Overall I think the SBU's CS curriculum is good for it's value and it will prepare you for the industry, but I should have went to another school like Georgia Tech which seems to attract more companies that SBU does not seem to do at all..

    Could you tell me your stats and ECs that got you into stony brook? Im a 10th grade who attends school in NYC and the school is called A School Without Walls and am gonna graduate early considering I went into 10th grade with half of the required credits to graduate in NYS so i will most likely graduate by the middle of 11th grade.I go to a school that doesn't do number grades but does narrative grades. I currently am taking chemistry, computer science, Spanish, psychology, and humanities. I've been told by my teachers that I am performing really well in my classes and in my narrative grades it says how I'm exceeding the expectations required. My extracurriculars are student government, Student Leadership Team, and am doing a passion project centered around community health but I haven't finished yet. I'm also doing a statewide competition called the envirothon where you compete for your knowledge of environmental science for this year. I'm also taking the 2 AP classes my school offers which is AP seminar and AP research and am trying to get a high score on both AP exams. My goal is to as well create my own club but I haven't finalized my plan and to take college now classes at bmcc or baruch and do really well in them to show I have academic potential considering my school doesn't do number grades. I'm also gonna do some internships involved with helping the community. I also recently did a medical school level course where I received an A. I'm trying to study hard for the SAT to try to get a high score to get an competitive edge. Do you think so far that I may have a decent chance at stony brook?

      Sup I just got in to SBU. You sound competitive and given from the info you gave take some harder classes your junior year like Calculus and more advanced English class. Try and find some research opportunity that relates to your story or conduct your own research. Just remember not getting in to one school won’t be the end all, it’s sad but it happens just apply to places you can yourself at happy and know your worth.

    • @kyiao

      Hi, from what you've said, you seem like you have a very good chance at getting into SBU! i just got accepted and I didn't take the SAT or ACT, and but I had a 4.0 GPA with the only exceptional classes i took being honors chemistry and AP world history in 10th grade. And my only extracurriculars were doing some volunteer work. So I would say you have more than what it takes to get that acceptance. However I will say that a lot of colleges, not only SBU, are looking for people with interesting backgrounds, factors that may have helped me get in is that i've been homeschooled for the past two years for familial reasons which is seen as unusual, and I have strong writing skills that benefitted my common app essay and helped me establish who I was. You seem to have that "interesting bachground" factor going for you because you're set to graduate early and have intriguing extracurriculars, are doing that competition and creating that club. Still, it depends on what you will apply to major as, because I assume that Honors programs, stem majors and those seeking medical degrees are quite difficult to get into and have extra qualifications. Make sure you are aware of that and on your application to take the common app essay seriously and truly dive into who you are and what fascinates you, they want to see your perspective and it doesn't have to be about academics.

    Thanks for this video, I’m a rising senior in HS and I really want to get into CS at SBU. Do you have an idea of what kind of stats like GPA, SAT, ECs would get me in? At least for AOI

    • @arock.
      @arock.  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Getting admitted into SBU for CS ( based on personal experience and other's ) is pretty difficult. A good majority of people are either rejected or placed into AOI. I'd say have at least 3.4 GPA and around 1300+ SAT score (make sure your Math score is very high) . However, having those grades don't mean you'll get accepted into CS. You should demonstrate your interest in CS through clubs and extracurricular activities. Other than that you should be good. It's ok if you don't get accepted directly into CS and into AOI instead because a good majority of incoming CS majors are AOI (in my experience and almost all of them make it through) Good luck!

      @@arock.I currently have 1430 SAT and 4.0 uw gpa and took apcsp but have not participated in any ECs related to Computer Science. Do you think I have a fair chance of getting accepted into the major directly?

    • @arock.
      @arock.  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fleur8153Hi I certainly don't speak for the SBU cs program, but if I were to guess, yes! Your SAT scores are definitely on the higher side and your GPA and ap classes show you can handle the workload. I do recommend having EC in CS since it solidifies your intent on majoring in CS and shows that it's your passion. SBU (in my opinion) likes to gate-keep the major because a lot of people see CS as a money-generating major. my suggestion is to get some EC in math/cs and just have fun in high school! colleges love to see the uniqueness in their applicants. In a worst-case scenario, you'll end up in AOI for computer science, which is not too bad.
