On encumbrance, in a turn you can actually move 12 inches or squares twice! You move fast in 0e where you move 120' twice! So 240' in a 10-minute turn. This was slowed down in later editions.

Oh and the "M" on monster stat blocks their movement in inches. Thanks for making these videos, though, man. I appreciate it!

Yes, I noted it, too. It seems that tactical retreat is a common used option (war gamers do it all the time) it is a good way to stay alive! Something modern players conditioned for heroic PC often forget or miss! You can actually run away in this game! Especially if the Monster is much much higher level than your party is. Yes of course it isn't that heroic but it is realistic and keeps your guys alive. [insert Holy Grail Singer from Sir Robin the-not-quite-so-brave-as-Sir-Lancelot...]

Loving these wight box videos, dood. Here is a nice little tip for quickly figuring if an attack hit or not without having to check the matrix:
You can think of the attack matrix in this as an early prototype of what later turned into the beloved THAC0 we know of... As such, you can use a similar method to the one used for fast resolution THAC0 where the attack roll result + enemy AC should tell you if it's a hit when it's equal or higher to the attackers THAC0.
It goes like something like this:
1- Take the THAC9 (To hit AC 9) in the matrix, and subtract it from 10, this will give you the "attack bonus" so to speak (like the BAB in later editions). Example: Every level 1 character starts with a attack bonus of +0 (10 - 10)
2- Add the defender's AC and the attacker's attack bonus to the d20 attack roll result.
3- Optionally modify the attack roll result further with Weapon VS Armor stuff and other modifiers as well such as fighting capability bonuses/penalties.
4- If the final result is equal or higher to 19, it's a hit.
Long story short, the OD&D attack matrix and THAC0 operates with the same principle, it's just the fact that the matrix here goes from AC 9 to 2 that makes it look different.

@Scutifer_Mike Always pleased to help! Speaking of attacks, that werewolf should have attacked your party four times! It's a HD 4 creature vs non-heroic characters! Yikes, think of the damage!!

Hi Mike, great Episode, as usually. I tried my first own Game of Wight Box (since I bought it last time), but I ran into many questions in the Character Generation... so I took the easiest road and got a human party. And my party found in their first dungeon room a treasure with a gem, worth 500,000 gp (I rolled a 98% and 6 times in a row with different dice a 1) the interesting thing is the leveling cap, only 1 level can be leveled and if it is much more Exp. (such as in my case) they get one point less than their next level. You mentioned in the last video a "Character Generation Video" when does it come online?

A couple of general questions about this Wight Box or BX: What do you do if a PC reaches its max Level or thereafter? Do you retire them OR can you somehow multi-classing? I wasn't sure if that mentioning of multi-classing in the description of Elves (p. 11) only counts for them or is a general rule for all races and classes? I mean some races only have a couple of level in total, and they are maxed out. And Domain Game things like building a castle are only working for Humans, since you have to reach that level 8 first.

    • @Scutifer_Mike
      @Scutifer_Mike  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@moritzlohmann8682 I think multi class is for elves only. I would probably have them continue adventuring until they had gold to build a keep or make a settlement like a shire. It’s never happened for me yet!

You should start pushing your weight around in local or regional politics pretty quick
My players are only 4th level with less than a dozen soldiers and they're a pretty potent force in the colonies, frequently turning back small armies of gnolls or bandits from raiding the fledgling new world settlements (and then guilting the recently rescued into doing what they want)

I took a look at this one, and while it's interesting it's also odd because it's based on a premise that never actually existed. We know for a fact, based on his forum posting before he passed, that Gygax never actually used the chainmail rules for combat. So the idea of game that's like "what if it was 1974 and I had just bought D&D, i'd have to use chainmail" is 100% false because people didn't actually use chainmail and we have proof of that, it's not some "well maybe..." ancient history, we have statements from Gygax and people who played with him and Arneson that they never used it.
It looks interesting at least, but strange because it's trying to create a reality that never existed.
