Juneau's Gold Creek Salmon Bake | What is a salmon bake in Alaska? | Cruise Excursion or On Your Own

  • The Gold Creek Salmon Bake is a bit of a misnomer. It's actually located on Salmon Creek, and the salmon isn't baked -- it's deliciously grilled over a smoky wood fire.
The festival-like environment of the little assortment of buildings and tented picnic table areas is very inviting. There was live music, activities (like gold panning), and a gift shop that sells handicrafts made by the Tlingit native peoples.
And did I mention the food?
Mouthwatering fresh salmon, cooked with that hint of wood smoke -- no fishy taste or wildness, only savory perfectly cooked filets. You can opt for a sweet brown sugar glaze -- which I tried on one piece -- and it was light enough that it only enhanced the flavor of the salmon.
It was a great end to a perfect afternoon. I'll be back.

I've lived in Juneau for over 30 years and have never been to this salmon bake! It's way too expensive for any locals, really, and my wife can make delicious salmon. Her cooking is better than a restaurant.

I grew up in a fishing boat in the Pacific Northwest, so I know what you mean about home cooking - many nights we had more salmon, crab, and ling cod than we could eat, my mom liked to cook fried potatoes with onions as a side for the fish. For many cruise passengers who have never had good salmon, have never gone fishing like we have, or who have lived in places very different - far away countries, even - this is an amazing peek into the amazingly delicious bounty that we enjoy. It’s kind of like showing off, in a good way! For me, it’s a reminder of my childhood in the boat, and the good times long ago when my mom and dad and little brother and I were all around our dinner table. :) Will your wife share her recipe with all of us? I’d love to have it!

@@trishatravelstheworld you're right 👉 in that the delicious 😋 salmon can be shared with the world. My wife said that she could think about a recipe to share. She likes to bake it, fry it or even a chowder type recipe. She joked that she should make a video of recipes for Alaska fish and what can be served with it. Maybe she will!

Thanks for the great video! Everything looks delicious! 🤤 My family and I plan to do this when we go on our first Alaska cruise in September.

Thanks BrittneyMo! If I had to do it over again, I’d probably just start at the salmon station. :) Also in September, remember to bring some bug spray/wipes. The mosquitos can be awful! I use Ben’s 100% DEET… about the only thing that works for me. Bon voyage and remember to come back here and let me know what you thought about it after your trip. :)

We are on a cruise in May to Alaska. Are there buses available at the port that can take you to the Salmon Bake if you are not on a ship excursion?

Hi Tina! I did this as part of an excursion to the Medenhall Glacier hike, but their website does say roundtrip bus from the port area. We rode the salmon bake bus back to the ship when we were done eating, so I imagine it's that bus that picks people up as well. They do recommend reserving ahead -- you might want to give them a call to confirm. I'm a bit jealous -- I'm not going until September this year. You might see some rain on your cruise, but I think it's also harbor seal baby time too! Here's the link I found, hope it helps: www.alaskatraveladventures.com/day-tours/juneau/gold-creek-salmon-bake/#dt

Trisha, question, my husband is doing an excursion where he is taking a helicopter to mendenhall glacier to do a hike up there. How far is it from mendenhall glacier to the actual Salmon Bake site? I asked because the last reservation is at 6:00 that I can make if I go on my own versus on ship excursion and his mendenhall glacier excursion gets back at 5:15. So I'm trying to time this out that he gets back in time to catch a bus in order for us to get to the salmon bake in time

@@tinaacord7798 I think that the salmon bake site is just a mile or two up the coast… so not very far… but you might want to think about going a little earlier yourself and have a beer by the creek (or lemonade), listen to music, or check out the little gold panning station. I believe there are taxis and Ubers (?) that your hubby might jump on at the port to get to the salmon bake, and then you both can just ride the salmon bake bus back after dinner. You should confirm that all of these details are still workable though - like with a call to the salmon bake folks - since stuff in Alaska changes sometimes. :)

We are going August 9th for a Princess cruise. We've not booked anything yet for Juneau. We want to do the whale watching, Mendenhall and the salmon bake. Can those be done all in one day? Aug 12th we dock in Juneau 8:00 a.m. til 9:15 p.m. Could this be done? Also, how do you schedule all of these and getting back to the cruise ship in plenty of time?

Hi Tammy! While I did a combo excursion through the cruise line, it looks like you can book it separately (attached link). It says they provide round trip transport to the dock for the dinner, and the latest seating is 6 pm. The salmon bake isn’t too far from downtown… depending on your other excursions, I’ll bet you’d have enough time since your ship leaves so late. I’d love to hear about it when you get back! :) Safe travels. www.alaskatraveladventures.com/day-tours/juneau/gold-creek-salmon-bake/?fh-u=05fe77f9-09f2-46bf-a831-bbe389d1263c
