Not really. I'm Indian and I was in New Zealand on a tour a couple of years ago and this nice old woman invited us to see their town hall. She wanted to show us her locality coz they don't get tourists. And I'm telling ya it was probably one of the warmest things I've ever done as a tourist. Everyone was so happy and all nice.
So, I've done this, many years ago, only the fisherman was sober - I was invited out onto a fishing net in Kochi, watched the sunset and at some point the fisherman said something that made me realise this wasn't free. I have to say though, I didn't mind. I'd been looking forward to seeing the nets for years and hadn't realised I'd be able to climb out on one. The sunset was beautiful, I got some great photos and I didn't mind forking out a few rupees for the opportunity. I live in a fishing community and I know that it's a precarious occupation, and it's obviously much more so in Kochi. I do, that said, understand the point about how this kind of thing stokes paranoia and makes tourists much warier than they need to be. It's depressing when you think you might be having a genuine friendly encounter and then the sales pitch starts and you remember you're just a wallet on legs. It would be pleasanter if people were upfront and had a little sign saying 50rp for a net tour (or whatever). But it's also important to keep a sense of perspective. It's too easy to let one shitty occurrence take precedence in your mind. A couple of years ago I travelled alone from Delhi to Bikaner via the Shekhawati region (which is gorgeous, I can thoroughly recommend it), and I had a great time. I met so many lovely, helpful people, including a wonderful guesthouse owner in Nawalgarh, who gave me a free guided tour and drove me out of the district gratis to catch a bus during a local bus strike. No negative experiences whatsoever. Then I arrived in Bikaner, and the bus driver's assistant told me I had to give him 200rp to get my luggage out of the storage compartment. It was something like my 13th visit to India and I knew this was garbage and told him so, and he instantly relented. I wandered off into Bikaner mumbling, 'Screw this place, jerks like that trying to take advantage, why do I keep coming here?' Then I gave myself a good talking to. I am from Kerala, I hav seen this kind of ppl, my dad always tell me to keep dist from these kind of ppl. These ppl try to emotionally blackmail you that tourists r rude, nofinance, etc
Being a local we should stop them doing this and educate them to respect Foreigners/Tourists. Please talk to local people or please speak to local press so that they can publish/telecast these kind of trap incidents then authorities react and take action. They do this to our own people too. They/We must give tourists their own space and we must let them enjoy and we should help them when they are in need or asked for help. Thats how we fulfill the meaning of 'Athidhi Devo Bhava'.

Something similar happened to me both in Bodrum, Turkey and at the Eiffel Tower. I was given a rose. I didn't ask for it, they just shoved it into my hand and then demanded money. I told them no and to take the rose back. They wouldn't take it, so I threw the rose on the ground and started shouting, LOUDLY, about giving someone something without their permission and then demanding money. There were too many people around so they left, startled.
I don’t think he said “what’s your name” in spanish, i think he tried to say it in french because it’s sounds like : comment tu t’appelle? Which means what’s your name?
When I was travelling through North America, either in New York City or Toronto, there was a legitimate Red Cross advertisement on the car of a subway train stating that we could receive a free first aid book by texting the number provided on the poster. I just wanted to try, even though I had no fixed location there. After disclosing some information, almost at the final stage, the process was effectively halted by a message stating that I would receive the free book only if I donated to them. It was not mentioned anywhere on the poster. Cheaters come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

I had a nice time in Kochi and South India in general. Didn't meet many of these people, but going up north things were pretty crazy and annoying. It got to a point that I was like: not gonna leave the hotel for today, because I don't want to meet indian people. I was there for 2 months so it got to a point that I was exhausted of these "friendly people" literally everywhere. And it's exactly what you said, not everybody will approach a tourist in that matter, but that's really rare. It seems like they see us as a big wallet. I was in India with a swiss friend and for his looks people were assuming he was a rich European - he's cheap af. Every time someone offered us anything in a friendly way my friend's first sentence always was: I won't give you any money
I was there a month ago. Got invited on to the net platform and when the guy started on about donations I just said, “thanks, bye!” and walked off. He hollered after me but I just ignored him.
Legend says you are AWFUL at jokes and have plagiarized this tired, old set-up and flogged this dead horse to death.... just stop.... please... just... no more...
I am from India and I just hate this aspect almost everywhere in India... exploiting emotions for money !!! I wish to speak volumes on this... but will stop myself at this - "entire India must trace its roots back to its ancient holistic philosophy and start following it vehemently - to be much better human beings - instead of falling to lowest realms of ethos. Many of us have really ignored ourselves and just continued on in our lives as a race or competition or to excel than others, and as a result found ways to gain more profit without putting in more effort or with languid approach. Happens in the UK too. Was waiting for friends for a meal. Had a guy walking up to me and asking me for money for a McDonalds. I give him my loose change. Then he tells me he wants £15 for a hostel. I look in my wallet I have £20's. I tell him I don't have a fiver. I remember giving my fiver to another homeless bloke. He goes on about giving me a fiver if I give him the £20. I said I don't want to give him my twenty, as I need it to pay for a meal. He goes on and on. I then said arent there free shelters in London. He said this one wasnt. Guy had nothing on him except his clothes. There are thousands of people in the street. I said no. He eventually walked off without so much as a thankyou in a gruff. The other homeless people I've met accepted anything and thanked me for it. Just learn to say no sometimes.
Oh boy! I live in Kerala and I also have gone to this place. But I haven't faced any scammers. Maybe these people only target foreigners. I'm sad that you had a bad experience in my home state. 😥
I went walkabouts in India all down the West coast and up the East to Rajistan then back to my start point of Bombay after a trip for work. Just avoid the tourist areas and you'll get none of this hassle. I had a fantastic time with the people and the only problem I had was I didn't understand when the kids down in the south kept asking me for "skoolpen". When I asked what it was they wanted it was a School pen, So I went and bought a box of Bick pens and I have not seen happier faces on kids in a long time just from being given a pen for school.
I'm from Kerala Bro these fishermen can b a bit hostile I don't know about kochi but in other places they gang up if one of them r threatened so police mostly don't interfere I heard kochi has improved a lot and he's drunk and probably has spent the 100 rs in the liquor store
dont worry they know they are all on the take it gets to the stage where its a pain in the arse going out it goes on and on all day...and if you give a child a pen believe me you will get 2o kids around you very soon....you will get scammed every day for every thing the only good thing is for the tourist its only a very smll amount but for them it will buy a meal...its just the constant hassle

While living in India i noticed, its 100% depending on where you are :) i lived in a non touristy area of Mumbai, between mahim beach and shivaji park. and nobody tried to scam me even once in arround 2 months. but on one day i went to see the touristy stuff like the gate of India etc. and people tried to make money of me every 10-20 sec. It actually was so annoying that i never went back to the touristy stuff ever. one time i had to walk through churchgate area => Headphones+music+ simply ignoring the people is the best way to go :) my friends here at home still wont believe me if i tell them indian people are actually nice. because all they see is stuff from the internet wich only consists of scams or shitting on the street memes. The only thing i can do is recommend people to check out india for themselfes. greetings from germany :)!
