The former drummer from Slayer, Dave Lombardo now plays in Mr Bungle and during a show I attended they treated us to the title track of this album Hell Awaits, which started off heavy as hell, but then in true Bungle form hilariously morphed into a Spandau Ballet song True
I wasn't aware that he is in Mr Bungle now, that's cool! And great story, I'm sure that seeing Mr Bungle live is a wild time.
@@mollyesanborn You really should do Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny soon. My personal opinion, but I think it rivals any Slayer album, and surpasses many of them.
Dave has also recently formed a band called Empire State Bastard with some people from the UK. Dave has had to work out how to play with different time signatures in that band.
@@bradhogan646 Thanks very much for the tip! They sound great so far.
@@SanityStick You’re welcome 😊
You're killing me reviewing the soundtrack of my life on each video, Molly.
That's awesome, glad you've been enjoying the videos :D
On ‘South of Heaven.’ they slow it down. And that is one of my favorites from them.
Ooh I'm definitely looking forward to hearing it!
I love those first two Slayer albulms. You should also check out To Mega Therion by Celtic Frost for similar vibes
Yes.
I'll definitely do a reaction for their debut album as well! And thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to check out Celtic Frost.
Yessir!!!! Celtic Frost are the Godfathers of Black/Death metal!!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
🤘
Favorite Slayer album! At Dawn They Sleep is amazing. Don't miss Haunting the Chapel EP too, it pairs really well with this album.
At Dawn They Sleep is definitely my favorite off this album! I'll have to give the Chapel EP a listen too, good to know.
Haunting the Chapel is a must - Chemical Warfare !
Great review as always Molly! I think Reign in blood is where they really came into their own and found their identity. My favorite albums are South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss which both came right after Reign in Blood. I look forward to those videos eventually 😊
Yes, I'll absolutely plan on South Of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss videos as well. Looking forward to hearing them!
Good review. You should check out Symbolic by Death, it is a must, trust me !
@@Zerothehero-tq1jg I've got that one on my list! Thanks :)
SLAAAAYEEEER
🔥🔥
Love this album sooo much, they played in the Bay Area all the time for this album! They might be from LA, but we made them our own!
Great review! This was their reverb heavy album influenced by Mercyful Fate, which definitely gives it a proto-black and proto-death sound. At Dawn They Sleep is my personal favourite, though ive also always loved the outro to Hardening of the Arteries
Here's what you got to keep in mind. This came out in 1985. Just for comparison let's take a look at the top 10 songs of that year.
1 "Careless Whisper" - Wham!
2 "Like a Virgin" - Madonna
3 "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" - Wham!
4 "I Want to Know What Love Is" - Foreigner
5 "I Feel for You" - Chaka Khan
6 "Out of Touch" - Daryl Hall & John Oates
7 "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" - Tears for Fears
8 "Money for Nothing" - Dire Straits
9 "Crazy for You" - Madonna
10 "Take On Me" - A-ha
Yeah, for anyone not a fan of all that, or the scene around all that at the time, this album was a gift from the gods themselves.
Also my all time favorite photo I've ever taken at a concert is Slayer performing the song "Hell Awaits" with the entire goddamned stage on fire! Just because they could.
Wow yeah, not much trending for metal music that year! Glad Slayer was going strong with bringing the heaviness. And that show you were at sounds crazy, that's such a cool experience that you had.
i bet this album scared the crap out of people... you know you listen to it then got possessed.
honestly, every song on this list is a banger.
@@sarang8585 the songs are so heavy and must say more technical than RIB album. I need to revisit it
@@sarang8585 It is IF you care for such music. If not, then it's the soundtrack for your personal Hell.
I was just playing this cd in my car yesterday. One of their best in my opinion
Oh that's such a coincidence! Yeah this album has a great tone to it, I love how dark it is and yet so energetic and speedy too.
Great review Molly. Still say the intro to Hell Awaits is one of the best in metal. Im gonna throw this on, while I walk the dog today. Your reviews are giving me warm fuzzy metal memories . And never have i heard springy in a Slayer review. Cant wait till you get to seasons in the Abyss.
Show No Mercy is also worth checking out in your Slayer journey.
Definitely, I'll plan on a reaction to it!
Yes! One of my all time favorite albums! 🤘I love “At dawn they sleep”. Thx for sharing your journey Molly! Glad you’re enjoying Slayer. 👍
This album was very influential for death metal thanks for its unique dark and evil sound
Yes I love the dark, hellish tone that it has!
Dave Lambardo the drummer here is one of my all time favorites.
He is absolutely incredible on this record, I love his playing style!
good stuff Molly. Hope you dig into other 80s classics like Overkill, Nuclear Assault, Tankard, Kreator, Destruction and more. Such a great decade for metal...mainstream and underground.
She has endless music to dive into. We are just lucky to see her enjoy it.
I know this is a Slayer video but I had to suggest you react to Sepultura's Beneath the Remains and Arise. Because they sound a bit similar to Slayer.
Good to know, I will be sure to keep that Sepultura record in mind for the future!
I was expecting Seasons in the Abyss but this is a good album. This has more of a death metal sound that thrash. They slowed it down on South of Heaven. Seasons in the Abyss is like a mix of Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss. 1990 was a great year for metal. Rust in Peace, Painkiller, Seasons In The Abyss and Cowboys From Hell. Just to name a few.
Yeah I'm very excited to continue with Slayer, I wanted to go back in their discography first so I'll probably do Show No Mercy next, and then continue forward from there. I'm looking forward to hearing all of their albums!
Probably the greatest introduction track ever. 4:54 "I'm never going to get sick of that." in reference to the sudden stop and restart. I'm still not sick of it and I remember when Thrash came on the scene. That is one of THE hallmarks of Thrash.
Absolutely, I love those sudden stops that they do! It makes for such jarring music and really adds to the intensity.
At Dawn They Sleep!!!!
The first couple albums were pretty raw, but you can still hear how much influence they had on other bands. At Dawn They Sleep is definitely the standout track on this one. Nobody really knew how to record music like this yet, it was brand new, so they basically cranked up the reverb on everything lol.
Tom's bass In, At Dawn they Sleep, towards the end sounds like a tuba. lol I always loved the production of this album. I was 14 when this came out and it was the best thing I ever heard.
My favorite Slayer album. It literally sounds like it was recorded in hell.
Despite breaking up in 2019, they’ll be performing three shows later this year: twice in September (Bridgeville, IL and Louisville, KY) and once in October (Sacramento).
If you live in or near any of those locations, you can try nabbing a ticket.
Yeah this record does have such a sinister quality to it, very hellish with its tone. I love it!
when they play in louisville, is that for live and loud?
Ooooh, now this album..... I arguably love more than Reign in blood.
Both are amazing albums!
definitely the most evil sounding slayer album.
Yes, such a hellish tone to this record that I absolutely love.
Slayer during this album have cited Mercyful Fate as an influence (Mainly Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King) on the writing which led to much longer and progressive songs to be created. It's def one of my favorite Slayer albums
Oh cool, thanks for the info! I'll have to check out Mercyful Fate at some point.
@@mollyesanborn Such an essential 80's metal band! Check out Melissa or Don't Break The Oath, King Diamond's vocals are unreal
Molly lamb of god when?
I really want to get to them soon! I'm very excited to hear what they're going to sound like.
The intro to At Dawn They Sleeps is in 13/8 or 15/8 -- very unusual for its time. That said I'm enjoying your reviews. :)
I Love Slayer and your videos! Can't wait till' you do Christ Illusion! My personal favourite! Keep up the good content
Thanks so much! Yeah I'm loving Slayer so far, I'll definitely continue with their albums here on the channel.
Great album. The title track, At Dawn They Sleep, and Crypts Of Eternity are my favorites on the album. One of the band members, Kerry King, recently dropped his first solo album and it’s worth checking out. But yeah, for Slayer, I’d say do Show No Mercy or South Of Heaven next. Nice reaction👌🏻
I love the tone of this record, so energetic and dark sounding! My favorite has got to be At Dawn They Sleep, such a fantastic track. I'll have to give that solo album you suggested a listen, and I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more of Slayer's albums as well!
At Dawn They Sleep is epic!
i love this album😇
Your smiles are pretty af. I’m so glad you’re listening to Slayer!! They’re definitely one of my favorites
Thanks for reminding me this album exists.
No problem, it was a pleasure to give this one a listen :)
Great review!
Hell Awaits indeed! And this was what hell must sound like, sounds like fun! Next Check out South of Heaven or Season in the Abyss.
Yeah, they definitely captured that hellish atmosphere with the sound on this album. I'm looking forward to hearing more of their albums, that's for sure!
Divine Intervention was always my favorite Slayer album. Keep in mind, if you listen to it, that it has a slightly more modern sound, having come out in the mid 90s. The drumming is insane!
Great reaction as always. You should definitely react to some Queens of the Stone Age in the future. I would recommend starting with either Songs for the Deaf or Like Clockwork!
Lombardo is a legend! Love their early stuff, with "Seasons in the Abyss" being my fav.
Yes he is such a great musician, I love his drumming style. I'm very excited to give Seasons In The Abyss a listen soon.
@@mollyesanborn I think you will enjoy it. "War Ensemble" and "Seasons in the Abyss" are tunes I listen to on repeat!
This was the first Slayer album I ever heard because I accidentally ordered it on one of those 10 CDs for $1 deals in a magazine back in like 96. Scared the bajeebus out of me lol.
Slayerrrrrr!!!!
Love the content Molly! and if nobody has told you yet today, Your Beautiful!
Aw thanks so much! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
I always thought Hell Awaits was too short and a bit monotonous, but it's still a good record. That devilishly-evil and speedy sound are really on point here 😈
Yeah I love that dark hellish tone of this record, it sets such a great atmosphere.
Tom Araya (Slayer lead vocalist/bassist) does have a pretty sick melodic voice. He has about the same range as James Hetfield, and while not quite as raspy, it somehow sounds more intimidating. This makes me excited when you review South Of Heaven or Seasons In The Abyss one day as those albums is where Araya's melodic vocals flash the most (although he's still primarily a yelling vocalist 😅)
Yeah his more melodic side would sometimes flash through on this album and I love the tone of it, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing South Of Heaven and Seasons In The Abyss soon as well.
You’ve got to listen to asphyx - last one on earth. It has the perfect blend of that slow dark and atmospheric doom metal sound with that fast balls to the wall death metal that made pestilence so great 🤘
Good review, hell awaits is a classic. I highly recommend you check out symbolic by death, it ls absolutely life changing !!
Absolutely, Death is a band that I really want to get into soon here on the channel!
Molly, please listen to the band Down! The front man is the singer of Pantera and the rest are alll well know New Orleans musicians. They have 3 albums and 2 EPs and and amazing single about losing Dime Bag after he was killed. (Pantera Gutarest) Please Please Pretty Please 🙏
Absolutely, I'd love to check them out when I finish up with Pantera's discography! Thanks for the suggestion.
Amazing album
Yeah this one absolutely delivered on the energy!
Back in my day ..., It was called speed metal.,🤟🤟🤟
Very appropriate name for this style, this album definitely has some speed to it!
No it wasn't. Slayer has been Thrash on every album but their debut, Speed Metal still exists, and you used the wrong emoji for the horns. Thanks for playing.
Yeah🤘😎🇵🇭
Thanks for watching! :)
I haven’t seen a recommendation for the first Metal Church album, but I think you’d really dig it👍
On the three albums, "Reign In Blood", "Hell Awaits" & "South Of Heaven", they follow a certain guitar riff and drumming rhythm concept that they change up differently and stick to on each of those recordings. Which seems like you have noticed and will hear when you react to "South..."
….South of Heaven next?!?!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
I can't wait to hear it!
@@mollyesanbornI can’t wait to see u react to it. It’s a classic awesome album. Tho I love “Reign in Blood”, that one has more atmosphere to it & you can feel the dread in songs such as “Spill the Blood”, “Live Undead”, the title track, “Mandatory Suicide” & the rest of the album 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Show no mercy slayers first album is also probably their best, put that one on your list molly
I'll definitely plan on a reaction to that one as well!
Well guess what I'll be listening to in the car going to work tomorrow. Loved this album when it came out, had never heard anything so fast back then. I like Tom's bass being a bit higher in the mix. Wasn't this the album where the producer made Dave Lombardo record all the cymbals separately?
Yes I love the speediness of this album too, so much energy. And if that's true about them recording all of the cymbals separately that's crazy, must've taken them so long to record all of that!
That was on “Show No Mercy” - from Wikipedia
> Lombardo said in 2015 that he was not pleased with how the drums were recorded. The engineer at the time had difficulties getting the right mix between the toms and the cymbals because they were too loud. The solution was to dampen the cymbals with towels and record the toms and cymbals separately. As such, Lombardo called Show No Mercy his least favorite Slayer album, although he emphasized that the songs were great, just not his performance
@@house9Tube thanks for the info. The one studio album I don't have....but soon will.
Fuck yeah amazing choice
Yeah this album was so much fun to check out! So much energy on this thing.
Another classic banger...you must check out Possessed's Seven Churches and Death's Scream Bloody Gore for classic analog grimness
Thanks for the suggestions! I'll make sure to add these to my list.
You should listen to the early genesis albums. Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the pound, The lamb lies down on broadway
Thanks for the band suggestion! I'll have to check out Genesis at some point.
I loved this album as a kid, it was so evil sounding that I felt I was doing something that's forbidden 😅 At Dawn They Sleep might be my favourite Slayer song ever, it's probably their most progressive track with "Face the Slayer" from the debut. And Necrophiliac I think is basically a death metal song. If you swap Araya's vocals with Chuck Schuldiner's it could easily be on Death's first albums.
More slayer 🤘🏼
More Slayer!
I'll definitely be doing more of their albums! :)
Great reaction, i think you should listen to Primus one of the most original bands that exist, even if you don't like them, they won't leave you indifferent to their sound.
🤘
Thanks for watching! :)
I notice that you mostly react to guitar based music. Is that what you prefer to listen to, or behind the scenes do you listen to more electronicy music as well? Just curious. Because I'd be perfectly happy to see you react to all sorts of stuff outside of the rock / alternative / metal spectrum if you fancy it.
On a side note, I think this got some classic facial expressions out of you, as it should be. Nice reaction. 😆
If you like Slayer, you will love Napalm Death.
Good to know, I'll be sure to keep them in mind!
You should react to Dark Angel's Darkness Descends
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll make sure it's on my list!
Molly please listen to Killswitch Engage :Alive Or Just Breathing album
Noted, I will be sure to keep Killswitch Engage in mind for the future! :)
Praise Of Death is easily my favorite Slayer song.
Great choice, such a speedy track! I especially love the drums on that one.
Divine Intervention... for reasons but yh SLAYER have fun
@ 6:24 OMG!
Haha, yeah those drums surprised me with the intensity!
Would love to see you review ween, especially pure guava
I will keep them in mind, thanks for the suggestion!
This album is so progressive & heavy as hell. They were definitely influenced by Mercyful Fate at this time 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Someone else pointed out the influence of Mercyful Fate as well, I'll have to give them a listen.
@@mollyesanborn”Don’t Break the Oath”…”Melissa”, especially the title track & “Satans Fall”….the you gotta get into “Into the Shadows”, “Time”, & “9”….for starters 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
still love that molly do albums -yes im old but sometime there was thoughts behind a album
Yes I love hearing full albums in one sitting, it really lets you fully delve into a band and their sound.
Its Slayer not a nursery rhyme its going to be heavy thats why we love Slayer
I do love Slayer, but for me they have a 1:3 Trash Ratio - for every stand-out song there's three very average or worse songs. It works out on average to being about 3 songs per album I'd actually go out of my way to listen to.
Although I do love the overall tone of this album there are definitely a couple of songs that stand out over the rest.

@@mollyesanborn I like to define SHOW NO MERCY as Iron Maiden in steroids 😆
Everybody grab your crosses for this one! Slayer at there most evil. React away!
Their singer is a Christian ironically. He sings about the evil. But doesn’t live it. Gotta respect that.
lol its funny to ear you discribe sound
you ear and you so cute
th-cam.com/video/ZVHbJR5tIwk/w-d-xo.html
Unfortunately the mix isn't good on these earlier records. Tom sounds like he's in a tiled bathroom.
The sound is a bit wonky, I thought it was just the style they were going for but I guess it's the production on their earlier stuff.
It’s ok to not like some stuff sometimes. Nobody cares anymore.
People are gonna kill me but this is actually my least favorite Slayer album
But I do like the song HELL AWAITS
Everyone's got their own taste in music, nothing wrong with this being your least favorite from them. I think the standout for me is definitely At Dawn They Sleep but the title track is pretty awesome as well!
I personally don’t think it’s that great of an album either. As much as the track hell awaits is a banger. I just put the rest in the meh category. I don’t think it’s as dull as divine intervention.
It’s too fast. Yeah they show their amazing musicianship. But people want to see it slowed down. They finally did that on ‘South of Heaven.’
@@johnnelson3665 . My problem is that it's too repetitive, same formula for all songs, same thing of everything. Other slayer albums are fast too but they don't sound as repetitive as this album.
Why are you doing this?
She loves metal. Why do you think?
Cause she’s freaking AWESOME!
I missed Haunting the Chapel and Captor of Sin. 🥲
Are those bonus tracks from this album? I'll have to check them out!
@@mollyesanborn Thanks and Yeah. I found out, after their 1st studio Album Show No Mercy, they recorded an EP called Haunting the Chapel, with 3 new Tracks: Haunting the Chapel, Chemical Warfare and Captor of Sin. Some kind of Preview for their 2nd studio Album Hell awaits. Mid 90s, i bought the first two albums in germany and Chemical Warfare was included on Show No Mercy and the last two on the Hell Awaits Album. That's why i was a little bit confused, hearing your very awesome reaction. :D
