Their first album pretty much influenced, along with Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost, the whole second wave of black metal scene. That album has been cited as an influence by bands such as Mayhem, who were at the heart of that movement
They brought the Big Metal Carnival straight though our teenage hearts decades ago...I still have an oldschool Cd digi Box of Roots, and my favourite track is still Ratamahatta.)))
When brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera formed Sepultura in Brazil in 1984, they could barely play as teens and learned as they played gigs and recorded extreme metal music... They were one of the early death metal bands. Max Cavalera (vocals/ rhythm guitar) played riffs w/ 4 strings and Iggor Cavalera (drums) learned to play from the streets. The addition of Jairo Guedz (lead guitar) and live bassist Paulo Jr. resulted in the EP 'Bestial devastation' in 1985... followed by the full album 'Morbid visions' in 1986. Their early influences were early Metallica, early Slayer, Celtic Frost/ Hellhammer, Venom, etc... When Sepultura relocated to Sao Paulo from Belo Horizonte, they split w/ guitarist Jairo and replaced him w/ Andreas Kisser (lead guitar) who made an impact on their 1987 album 'Schizophrenia'... By 1988, their records had been released in Brazil only and were being imported to Europe and N. America. Sepultura got label interest and signed to Roadrunner Records in 1989. Producer Scott Burns (who produced most of the Florida death metal bands in the early to mid 90's from Cannibal Corpse to Deicide) worked on 2 Sepultura albums - 'Beneath the remains' (1989) and 'Arise' (1991) as Sepultura toured Europe and N. America and became one of the most promising international bands. In 1993, Sepultura opted to go for a new sound w/ more groove (like Pantera) and Brazilian influences on the album 'Chaos A.D.' and it eventually sold gold in the US (half million copies) - their most successful album. But there was a disconnect between Max Cavalera and the band after he and wife Gloria Cavalera (who managed the band) moved to Phoenix, Arizona while the rest of Sepultura stayed in Brazil. Their 1996 album 'Roots' was Sepultura's homage to tribal music in Brazil and heralded the beginnings of 90's 'nu metal' sound... it also eventually sold gold in the US and charted worldwide. Unfortunately, it was the last record to feature Max Cavalera... he left Sepultura after his wife Gloria's contract to manage the band were not renewed in 1996... His brother Iggor Cavalera left Sepultura in 2006 and he reunited w/ Max in the band Cavalera Conspiracy (or simply Cavalera) Max Cavalera formed the band Soulfly and released their nu metal debut album in 1998. It was Soulfly's only gold record in the US... People expected Soulfly to find the same level of success as the classic Sepultura... but that did not happen. Soulfly did release some stellar records like 'Primitive' (2002)... '3' (2002)... 'Prophecy' (2004)... etc. but endured a number of line-up changes. Some Soulfly songs - 'Back to the primitive' ... 'Eye for an eye' ... 'Prophecy'... 'Carved inside'... In 1998, Sepultura returned w/ new vocalist Derrick Green and released the album 'Against' (1998)... but the fans were upset and the album undersold... They still recorded some stellar records like 'Dante XXI' in 2006... 'A-Lex' in 2009... etc. But they had to fight the stigma for decades that Sepultura without Max or Iggor Cavalera was not Sepultura. Some later Sepultura songs - 'Sepulnation' ... 'Against' ... 'Kairos' ... 'Isolation' ... 'Come back alive'.
After 1993, Igor Cavalera (Sepultura"s drummer) created a new school of drumming . His innovative style in the album Chaos A.D. brought tribal elements (along with Brazilian rthytms as samba and axé) into the songs. One classic example of his contribution to extreme music is the introduction of the song "Territory".
Beneath the Remains and Arise are 2 of the greatest thrash albums of all time🤘 Not even old Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax or Megadeth match the attitude and aggression heard on those albums☠
Agreed. To find old-school thrash in a similar vein to early Sep, you kinda need to look over to Germany with bands like Sodom, Destruction and Kreator.
I'm 62 and they are one of the best Live bands I have ever seen. Chaos AD was absolutely huge when it came out. There is no bad song on the entire album. Great reaction to a great band.

@@duckstabed7381 It's good but in the plethora of metal that's been released since 30 years ago I guarantee if you looked you'd find better. There's always a group of people who find something they like listen to it endlessly for decades and then rail about no good music these days. The real truth is there's more good metal music released in the past decade as there was in the 30 years prior to that. Not only due to sheer quantity of music produced but also advances in production, composition, experimentation, gear, talent etc. Whenever I see someone saying this is the best Yada Yada and it's 30 years old it's most likely not objectively true. While music is subjective its also objective. There are preferences and there are fundamental reasons to what makes music good. Both are always at play. Subjectively only an idiot would contest OP's claim. Objectively only an idiot would believe OP's claim I'm not atavistic. I love older music I grew up playing classical piano, still do. It's just the odds of music retaining some hazy best quality through time becomes less and less the more of it that passes.
I love how you chose a song from each album to get a general idea of how their sound evolved. Personally, I think their peak was during the Arise and Chaos AD time period. Those albums are absolute classics imo. As far as the drumming, I feel like the style gives such a unique and even a cultural feel and vibe to a lot of their music
As a Brazilian, I was proud to see a Brazilian band go far, and many other bands that unfortunately didn't achieve the same success and projection, many of them from the same state as Sepultura, Minas Gerais. One of the first concerts I went to as a teenager was Raimundos (a Brazilian hardcore band), Sepultura and Ramones together in 1994.
@@gzeuskraiste Yes, Sepultura's first singer was part of the group! But other bands like Chakal, Overdose, Mutilator, Sextrash, Wichhammer, Holocausto, The Mist..
Great video! As a Brazilian, it warms my heart to see Sepultura here! That said, I strongly recommend their version of Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe". You'll be amazed, I can guarantee.
Roots bloody roots is off the album Roots and was Sepultura's first foray into nu metal and was inspired by Korn ( both Johnathon Davis and Max Cavilera have confirmed this ) and this was the last album Max did with Sepultura and he went on to create the band soulfly which concentrated on nu metal ( which by the way is also a banging band ) Roots is a fantastic album all by its self as well. Love seeing a fellow Aussie doing reactions. Keep up the great work!!!
Some of the sludgier elements on Chaos AD and Roots were influenced by the like of Neurosis and UK band Fudge Tunnel which Sepultura toured with, Max became good friends with their Guitarist/Singer Alex Newport, Alex even married into Max’s family and the two bands collaborated on an album under the name Nailbomb
Dead embryonic cells is such a great track, I simply adore your reactions, you are so unique and cool, and the way you naturally pick up on some background details is so cool, so cool reactions!
Very cool to see you've finally gotten to Sepultura again. 90s Sepultura was so damn good, with Roots being their peak. Maybe it's because I first heard Sepultura around the same time one of my friends picked up the "Grindcrusher - Earache Records Sampler" CD, but now I want to get you on to some of those bands, like Carcass, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, and my personal favourite, Godflesh. Dare to dream, I guess! 🤘😅
Saw them on the Arise tour. First metal concert I went to, barely into my teens. A few security guards started roughing up people who fell into the pit, Max Cavalera swung his BC Rich at one of the security guards, a fight ensues, it eventually dies down, they go back up into the stage and do a really, really pissed off cover of "Policia" by brazilian punk band "Ratos de Porão". As the adults with me dutifully got the hell out of there, riot police were being called into the venue. "So this is metal shows", I thought.
And yes, their 80s/early 90s albums were somewhere one the very heaviest spectrum of thrash, borderline touching on death metal tendencies. Chaos A.D. is at once groovier but also, there's a lot of punk/hardcore influence thrown into the mix. Max used to say in interviews that he had a favourite tape in his youth that had Celtic Frost's Morbid Tales on one side and Discharge's "Protest and Survive" on the other. This being the times before the internet, he had no idea what they looked like, and thought it was all the same genre, even though Celtic Frost are very much a Thrash Metal band and Discharge are considered Punk/Hardcore. Roots marks an even bigger change, both by flirting with the sort of groove present in Nu Metal, but also by adding a lot of brazilian tribal percussion and vibes. It's the last album with their "classic" lineup, which had been pretty much unchanged until that point.
Excited for another one of my favorite bands of all time. I've see them live two times in Greece (with different vocalist and drummer) and Max Cavalera two times with two different bands (Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy with his brother Igor). Igor considered one of the greatest heavy hitters in the history of metal drumming
Many thrash bands slowed down and went to a more groove heavy route. Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax all did it. Grunge was hurting them. Not as much as it did hairmetal though. Roots was the last album to have both Cavalera brothers. Max(vocals, guitar) left in 1996 with his brother Igor(drums) leaving in 2006. In my opinion, they haven’t been the same. “No Cavalera, No Sepultura!”
My son got me a cameo video from Max C 2 years ago for Father’s Day, max spoke n sang for a few minutes, that dam kid brought me too tears, god love him🤘🤘
Fun fact: Scott Burns has produced many albums back in the day, at Morrisound Studios in Tampa/Florida. Cannibal Corpse, Sepultura, Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary and quite a few others. He is one of the few studio engineers who helped these bands become who they are today.
Sepultura it’s such a great band, black metal, death metal, thrash metal, groove metal and even experimented with aboriginal sounds from Brasil, and it blends so well
Iggor and Max are responsible for inspiring SO MUCH evolution in heavy music. Really innovative. The best bands in so many punk and metal subgenres ALWAYS point to Sepultura.
Eu fico super feliz quando nosso Brasil tem sua contribuição no nas músicas internacionais, é motivo de orgulho, eu sou fã do Angra Mas respeito muito o Sepultura é uma banda gigantesca assim como Angra.
Awesome reaction as always! For some context, Sepultura started playing a very dirty, fast, aggressive brand of metal that would be the precursor to thrash, death, and black metal. Starting from Chaos A.D. they switched to a more groove oriented sound and began to include inspiration from traditional ethnic brazilian music, peaking in Roots. As you well noticed, their earlier albums up to Arise are tuned to E standard, Chaos A.D. is tuned to D standard, and Roots is tuned all the way down to B standard. You've got good ears! They retained the same formation until 1996, when the rhythm guitarist and singer Max left the band, followed by the drummer Igor in 2006. For the next Sepultura reaction i recommend Mass Hypnosis, Territory, Ratamahatta and Attitude from the classic albums (Ratamahatta completely blew my mind the first time i heard it, it still does!), and i also really recommend Isolation, Means To An End and Autem from their latest album Quadra! Their "new" vocalist Derrick is a monster, and Eloy, the drummer in that album, is also a beast! Lastly, since you seem to really like groove and breakdowns, i also recommend Shadow Moses by Bring Me The Horizon, Flying Whales and Born For One Thing by Gojira (they are pretty heavy so beware!) and Domination by Pantera if you haven't listened to it yet, to see how you like those bands :)
It is interesting that sepultura's career spends between archaic Proto black metal all the way through new metal and the current ERA, as they are indeed a legacy band with a long history. I was first made aware of them around the schizophrenia album and loved how it touched on venom, Celtic frost, metallica, a lot of stuff that I was just predisposed to dig influence wise. It's great to see you coming to this band because they are unique in the annals of extreme metal having warn their Brazilian Heritage so strongly on their sleeve for so many years and whatnot and incorporating extra percussion and all that good stuff. Cheers, absolutely love what you do and cannot wait until we get to the German thrash bands
The percussion in the beginning of REFUSE / RESIST and Roots Bloody Roots is influenced by Brasil's popular music, mainly samba and axé, which are direct descendents of african religious music, which is very prominent in our culture.
The difference in the sound between Beneath/Arise albums to Chaos/Roots is attributed mainly to the change in production. Scott Burns who produced Death/Obituary/Cannibal Corpse did the first two albums, and then the band switched to Andy Wallace on Chaos AD and Ross Robinson for Roots. Those are three very different producers and the albums they produce reflect on their particular style
You've had to keep it mind they're Brazilian metal band that's why you hear some percussion section in refuse/resist and roots bloody roots as well also they're known for adding tribal instruments into their music at least in early days was it when cavaleras brothers were part of sepultura.
Como brasileiro, sempre me sinto muito orgulhoso escutando esses clássicos. Muito respeito e agradecimentos ao Derrick Green. Adoro a obra com ele também, mas Sepultura clássico é surreal
You must see the video of Roots Bloody Roots, too!!!! this is so amazing!!!! greets from Germany! And go on like this, you doing so fine! like it ! ❤🤘😍🤘

I've been in a few metal bands over the last 20 years and every single one has thrown in a cover of Roots Bloody Roots at a show at some point cos it's so simple and every Metalhead LOVES it.
So nice! The albun Roots changed the game at that time and influenced many bands like Slipknot and Korn. On this album, Sepultura put the brazilian culture on the spot. You should check the video clips of Roots Blood Roots and Ratamahata.

Love your enthusiasm for my fave, Dead Embryonic Cells. 🤘😁
The WAY she is INTO IT damn lady bro, my just consumed my 101% total respects for the whole week.
Adoro curtir essa Reaction! Essa incrível mulher fornece altas alegrias. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
War for… ‘Territory’ - is very relevant at the moment. Unfortunate as that is to say, it’s also a great song. 🤟 Soulfly instrumentals are also great.
Sepultura it’s such a great band, black metal, death metal, thrash metal, groove metal and even experimented with aboriginal sounds from Brasil, and it blends so well
Excellent reaction! Very very good. Congratulations. 🎉
Você realmente nos faz eternizar a bandaça Sepultura. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Iggor and Max are responsible for inspiring SO MUCH evolution in heavy music. Really innovative. The best bands in so many punk and metal subgenres ALWAYS point to Sepultura.
One of my favorite bands of all time 🔥 Seeing them for my second time in person soon
No momento 10:57 é coisa mágica. Excelente!
Thats a real reaction video!!! Not a fancy nonsense from anointed artists! Respect!!!
Early Sepultura was some great Frash Metal
Sepultura!
Sepultura é minha banda favorita quase todo dia estou ouvindo Sepultura cara eu amo essa banda.
Sempre que posso curto seus vídeos. Esse reaction do Sepultura é inesquecível. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✍🏼
I recommend "Desperate Cry" from the live in Barcelona
The whole concert was awesome.
Excelente! Gostei tanto que vou repetir! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It was a good overview of different Sepultura's eras. Missed something post-Cavalera brothers, maybe Convicted in Life or Sepulnation.
Despite not being their best song, the chorus in rbr fkin GOES dude. One of my favorite parts of any song ever
Principalmente no momento 10:57.... excelente! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Those are three very different producers and the albums they produce reflect on their particular style
loved the react! hi from brasil 🇧🇷
You've had to keep it mind they're Brazilian metal band that's why you hear some percussion section in refuse/resist and roots bloody roots as well also they're known for adding tribal instruments into their music at least in early days was it when cavaleras brothers were part of sepultura.
YEAH!! THE ENERGY!! Love you
that was great! this is everything a new listen should be
hope to see more stuff! cheers
I love her flow enjoying thrash metal
You must see the video of Roots Bloody Roots, too!!!! this is so amazing!!!! greets from Germany! And go on like this, you doing so fine! like it ! ❤🤘😍🤘
Love to see you smiling all the time. Breakdown in DEC is the best❤
Thank you, as a brazillian, we are so proud of having Sepultura, maybe you could give a listen to other brazillian gems out there
🤟 Sepultura from Brazil! I can't count how many times i just play the Roots full album! Was something that really blow my mind. Chaos AD is amazing to!
The best vinyl morbid visions😊
I've been in a few metal bands over the last 20 years and every single one has thrown in a cover of Roots Bloody Roots at a show at some point cos it's so simple and every Metalhead LOVES it.
So nice! The albun Roots changed the game at that time and influenced many bands like Slipknot and Korn. On this album, Sepultura put the brazilian culture on the spot. You should check the video clips of Roots Blood Roots and Ratamahata.
YES! I don't usually do that BUT I urge you to listen to the whole Beneath The Remains album as it is hands down the best thrash album of all time.
Haven’t heard this stuff in years. Awesome!!!
*Sepultura do Brasil* 🤘🏼
No 'momento' 11:00 até 12:30"" foi incrível e inesquecível. ETERNO!
Chaos AD was my first experience with Sepultura and will forever remain my gold standard for this band and Trash in general.
The intro for Beneath the Remains reminds me of Mercyful Fate or King Diamond, especially the Abigail album.
one of my favorite bands since I was 15, yesterday I turned 30.
They're from my hometown but I never caught them live unfortunately. Back then I was 100% focused on Punk Rock and was too young for concerts. :(
Beneath Embrionic Cells 🔥 The albums Arise and Beneath the Remains are total on fire! My favourites🔥 🔥 🔥
Keep checking them out, they have tons of songs you’d dig
