@@mollyesanborn I think Power Metal is actually worth listening to, if a bit silly. The albums without Anselmo quite unmatured even if they have some good moments.
Always delivering with the great content Molly! Cowboys from Hell reminds me of Facelift from AiC cause you can hear the 80s gloss slowly evaporate and be replaced by the 90s grit, and as a bonus it makes it the most fun (imo) Phil’s voice never sounds like this again & stays in the lower register bluesy singing & growls/shouts. Oh that's awesome!! Yeah definitely give them a listen, from the two Pantera albums I've heard so far their music is absolutely wild, just so full of energy.
Pantera is definitely my go-to band for heavy music. It's so pure. This album drove the hype for Vulgar Display of Power. I own a Washburn Dime 333 from 1997. The pickups are super hot. Pair that with a solid state amp and you get intricate tone. Fun fact: "Psycho Holiday" in midi format was used as menu music for the Nintendo 64 WWF Wrestlemania 2000 game.

So many killer songs on this album like the title track, Psycho Holiday, Heresy, Cemetery Gates, Domination, Shattered, and many others. When this album hit, people lost their minds. Even though they had 4 albums before this, they were released independently. You had to be local to the scene to know who they were. To most of the metal world, this is considered their debut. Also because they changed their sound and style for this album, from glam/power metal to heavy, thrashy, groovy and a lot more intense.
Thanks for the info, yeah I was confused when Wikipedia lists it as their fifth but everyone was saying it's their first in the comments. That makes sense now. I'd love to check out their earlier albums in my own time and hear what they sounded like as a glam rock band.
Glad that you noticed Rex's badass basslines right away, people often dismiss or just doesn't pay attention to all the great work he does only because the rest of the band is... well, hard to stop listening to
Molly trust me the next two albums after this and vulgar display of power are some of the heaviest darkest and most brutal albums you’ll ever hear called far beyond driven and the great southern trendkill, especially the great southern trendkill that album is an absolute monster just how insanely heavy and violent it is, easily one of the angriest albums I have ever heard, right up there with Iowa by slipknot in terms of how angry and dark they are.
Ahhh this makes me even more excited to hear them! I'll definitely try and get to Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill soon on the channel :)
You gotta react to their album Power Metal! It's from their hair metal era, so it sounds much different then Cowboys, but it's one of my favourite Pantera albums. It's also the first album with Phil Anselmo on vocals
@@mollyesanborn Pantera notoriously hate those early albums and deny they exist. Even their official website omits them entirely from their discography. That's not to suggest the albums are bad though.
Such a great album, I can see why it's your favorite! And yes I will definitely be doing a video for Far Beyond Driven as well, I'll probably do it next in my Pantera series :)
Hey Molly! Another great album review.❤ Bought it back in the nineties. It's been a while, since i last heard it. Of course you have to do "far beyond driven" also 😋
Thanks for checking the video out! This album is amazing, they bring so much energy to it. I'll certainly continue with the Pantera videos and do a Far Beyond Driven reaction as well, I'm excited to hear it :)
@@mollyesanborn Yes your subscribers will love more Pantera and metal reactions!!! Also Molly you should start a new reaction journey with Mercyful Fate. You should start and react to their first album Melissa from 1983. I think you will love it!!! A classic heavy metal album!!!
I got to see them on the tour for this album in a tiny little club in Boston. My second favorite live show ever, just behind Jinjer (also in a small venue) which was two of my kid's first show.
Oh how awesome! To see them live this early on in their career must've been quite an amazing experience. And I will have to get on doing a Jinjer reaction in the future, I'd love to hear them!
This album and Stone Temple Pilot's Purple were the first two albums I bought. Same time. (we're talking cassette tapes here) 90s rock was the best. The diversity of it was incredible.
Yeah the 90's sure put out some fantastic records. I'll have to get to a Stone Temple Pilot reaction in the future too, they're a band I'd love to check out!
Fun thing that is this album isn't debut album - it's FIFTH album. First 3 of them was in glam metal (like as Mötley Crüe) and 4th was thrash metal. :)
The shrill high notes and super deep divebombs are a combination of a Digitech Whammy set to a 2 octave sweep and his guitar having a Floyd Rose floating tremolo, aka whammy bar. The nut locks down so you can work the tremolo and keep the strings in tune. The double low dive became known as the DimeBomb.
Far Beyond Driven is another good one and even heavier. It is the heaviest album to debut at number one on the billboard charts. FBD is much more abrasive and may take a few listens to fully appreciate it. When most metal band go softer when they find commercial success, Pantera decided to up the heaviness.
Spot on, they really do fuse the 80's sound with the more heavy, intense thrash metal that followed in the 90's. Clearly a very influential album on the metal scene at the time.
Such a good album. Really its the only one where Phil demonstrates his amazing singing ability, before he moved on to low screams and stuff. I like his later singing/screaming too, but this album is just really unique in that regard :)
My fav Pantera album They were heavy but still groovy and Anselmo vocals were more diverse. With time all of those things got lost. I still enjoy the other albums but this is the one for me
Heavy and groovy, absolutely! This is such a crushing album but somehow so much fun at the same time... I love how Pantera blends the two styles so well!
If you listen to the full discography, definitely check out Power Metal. It's very underrated and often skipped over. It's their first album with Phil Anselmo on vocals and it marks the shift into their heavier sound. It's almost like Judas Priest meets Metallica.
I think this was one of, if not the first metal album I listened to in 8th grade. Strict upbringing and all; lotta good that did! This album is a fun one. I can't think of any bad songs on here really. One thing I really like is sometimes there is this "flow-state" in the guitar parts, especially in "The Sleep" where it's just grooving to the point it's almost chill despite being heavy. Obviously, you're not gonna get any chill on "Far Beyond Driven" - that's probably the most Hostile (pun intended) I've heard this band. Molly- any plans to maybe check out TesseracT or Periphery? Some good stuff in those discographies. TesseracT is kinda unique; really, they both are; Periphery, well, if you liked Faith No More, you're gonna love these guys.
btw cowboys fro mhell is their first studio album and vulgar display is their 2nd. in order they go: CFH, Vulgar display, far beyond driven, trendkill, Reinventing the steel. just thought you should know in case you get confused Fun fact: before phil (their vocals) joined pantera and pantera became pantera, they were actually a glam metal band which is why on some tracks like shattered and heresy there are some really high voice vocals and high pitch guitars and they dont really feel like pantera songs, not a lot of sludgey heavy riffs and growls Also Dominations breakdown is the best in metal history and dime was the best guitarist you cant argue with that
Thanks for the explanation, that makes a lot more sense now. I'll definitely continue with Far Beyond Driven, Trendkill, and Reinventing The Steel here on the channel. And I will not argue with you on those last two points, Domination is an absolutely killer song and Dimebag Darrell sure knew his way around a guitar. Such a talented musician.
Absolutely, I'll definitely plan on doing more Pantera reactions! You think I should do their earlier glam metal albums or just go forward from Cowboys From Hell? I'd love to hear their early stuff, just not sure if I should do videos for them.
@mollyesanborn I never really got into their glam stuff- I've not heard enough to have an opinion on it- im pretty sure i first heard far beyond driven and was blown away. I've always thought they got better with each passing album and Reinventing the Steel had been my fav ever since its release. There's not one song of theirs I've heard that I disliked
I know they released four albums leading up to Cowboys From Hell, but they had a different vocalist and a very different style as well (glam/power metal). Maybe I'll check their early stuff out at some point too, would make for a fun listen!
@@mollyesanborn That's basically why I felt the need to draw a distinct line at Cowboys from Hell being Pantera's first album. I'm obviously wrong on a technical level, but, take it from a guy who grew up in the 80s listening to hair metal and sang in a cover band during the 90s/2000s, no one knew who Pantera was until Cowboys from Hell. My guitarist was their biggest fan, and he never brought "Power Metal" over to jam out to. "I Am the Night" wasn't being blasted through our system after practice. I imagine most people's first experience with the band was the MTV video for "This Love" from Vulgar Display of Power. From that point on, the band itself did not seem to be promoting anything before CFH. So, yeah...I'm very wrong on a technical level, but 100% right in every way that actually matters.
I started listening to Pantera with Vulgar Display of Power as well, however, I did it back in the early 90’s. Found Cowboys From Hell after. Next should be Far Beyond Driven. Great Southern Trendkill is fire too. I wouldn’t explore any further back than CFH. It gets ugly 😂 We’re talking spandex and glam. Love me some Pantera, but their really early stuff wasn’t for me. RIP Vinny and Dimebag
@@mollyesanborn You have already covered some of them with Metallica and Megadeth. I don't think you've done a few in their catalog yet, but I think you plan to. So here is my Thrasher starter pack. No particular order. Slayer- Reign in Blood. Sacrifice- Forward to Termination. Death Angel- The Ultra-Violence. Kreator- Pleasure to Kill. Exodus- Bonded by Blood. Anthrax- Spreading the Disease. Sepultura- Beneath the Remains. Vio-lence- Eternal Nightmare.
I love your videos. I'm not sure if you even take requests, but there's a band called Nightwish that I hope you'd enjoy listening to, and maybe (hopefully) you'd like them enough to analyze a few albums. Particularly oceanborn. Anyways, keep doing what you're doing Molly. I know I'm not alone when I say I love watching these.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm really glad to hear that you're enjoying the reactions. I will be sure that I have Nightwish on my list of bands to check out :)
Awesome!!! Far Beyond Driven should be next if you continue with Pantera. But if you want something funky i recommend blood sugar sex magik by the chili peppers. That album has some nice deep cuts on it
The call and response / gang vocals/ chants are really from the hardcore (hardcore punk) influence, that you also find in metalcore, beatdown hardcore, Deathcore that came after CFH. But really interestingly.. derives from West Africa in origin. Slot of older Afro Beat such as Fela Kuti and others and some Juju I believe.
I know it’s not your style, but maybe consider uploading full separate versions to the most known/requested reaction songs, like cowboys from hell and cemetery gates, I love this format of the whole album but maybe it could help with some more views since a lot of people look for the reactions for those specific songs and moments like those screams at the end of cemetery gates, just an idea, love your work and wish you well🖤
@@user-sr6ki8xo6c I understand, as I said, I know it’s not her style, just saying she deserves more visibility, and I think extracting the full reactions of specific popular songs can be a good chance for her to grow and thus maybe even allowing her to make a living out of content making. Again I respect any decision she makes as this is only an idea I’m throwing in case it interests her 😊
@@WheresWaldo05 I believe she can just mute the song constantly (as she already does) since the important part is her reaction, thoughts and analysis of it (at least for me as a reactions consumer)
i saw you doing system of a down whole discography reaction so what do you think about doing daron malakian and scars on broadway reaction? they have only 2 albums and i believe that on the first one you can hear soad drummer (ofc daron on the guitar and vocals), some songs really sound very mezmerize/hypnotize era and are pretty much underrated in soad fanbase
Cowboys from Hell is a fascinating album, this is almost perfect in my opinion. Have you checked out Lamb of God or Machine Head? These bands are also pretty solid. If you want to introduce yourself with Groove Metal, then listen to LoG's As the Palaces Burn
be interesting to see and hear what you think about Pantera's 1st couple albums when they were GLAM, before becoming 1 ( if not) the BEST Groove metal bands. without em, no Machinehead ( they have a couple tracks with a Pantera vibe)
If you ever look at the music video to Cemetery Gates you'll notice that the first part, the intro, I guess, has been taken out; it's shortened. Ticked me off when I saw that. And it ticks me off whenever anyone does a reaction to the song using the video... By the way, I mentioned it before but it might have been in a video that was too old for you to notice, but I see that your intro claims you do movie reactions and I want to ask if you'd react to Nope 2022. I really love watching reactions to that movie.
This particular album is its own sound i feel like, with phils vocals, grove and the general direction they we’re headed as a band. Later albums are heavier and vocally more brutal than this one thats for sure. Check out far beyond driven next its next in line after vulgar
Yeah this record has a sort of fun grooviness to it paired with the heaviness, such a great combo of styles. I'll definitely check out their later stuff too.
Random thought alert....The vocals are obviously way different, but listening the the drums and bass especially, I hear lots of similarities to the music that Anthrax was making around the same time. I'm a huge fan of both bands. I just never noticed it before. Maybe it's just me.

Perfect timing. I just got home from jamming to this album in my car on an off day.
Glad that you noticed Rex's badass basslines right away, people often dismiss or just doesn't pay attention to all the great work he does only because the rest of the band is... well, hard to stop listening to
Yeah the entire band work so well together as one unit, but that bass is absolutely killer!🔥
almost every song in this album deserves its own video i think
Molly trust me the next two albums after this and vulgar display of power are some of the heaviest darkest and most brutal albums you’ll ever hear called far beyond driven and the great southern trendkill, especially the great southern trendkill that album is an absolute monster just how insanely heavy and violent it is, easily one of the angriest albums I have ever heard, right up there with Iowa by slipknot in terms of how angry and dark they are.
Ahhh this makes me even more excited to hear them! I'll definitely try and get to Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill soon on the channel :)
I remember when all of these albums were new and fresh! Glad to see your enjoying hearing pantera your absolutely awesome!!!
Yeah Pantera is amazing! I'm so glad to finally be getting into their music.
You gotta react to their album Power Metal! It's from their hair metal era, so it sounds much different then Cowboys, but it's one of my favourite Pantera albums. It's also the first album with Phil Anselmo on vocals
I'd love to give it a listen and hear "early Pantera" with a different singer and a different genre altogether... would be very interesting!
@@mollyesanborn Pantera notoriously hate those early albums and deny they exist. Even their official website omits them entirely from their discography. That's not to suggest the albums are bad though.
Great Southern Trendkill is gonna blow your mind.
Well then consider me VERY excited to hear it!
If Far Beyond Driven doesn't do it... GST definitely will... shout out from DallasTx 🤘🏽😎
Message in Blood is my favorite track from this album!
Amazing song! 🔥
My favourite Album by them. So varied. I think your next Pantera Reaction should be "Far Beyond Driven" ;)
Such a great album, I can see why it's your favorite! And yes I will definitely be doing a video for Far Beyond Driven as well, I'll probably do it next in my Pantera series :)
that 'Rhythmic Pattern' Pantera uses is called 'Power Groove'. 😎
Definitely Far Beyond Driven next. An album that was ahead of its time and their best imo.
They change their sound on each album. Which keeps it interesting.
Hey Molly!
Another great album review.❤
Bought it back in the nineties.
Lead Singer Phil was channeling King Diamond on this record. He couldn't hit King's Falsetto highs but at least he tried.
Hmm not familiar with King Diamond, I'll have to check his music out!
HELL YEA MOLLY I LOVE THIS ALBUM AND PANTERA! MORE PLEASE!
I'm quickly falling in love with Pantera, this album brought so much energy! I'll definitely do more Pantera videos :)
@@mollyesanborn Yes your subscribers will love more Pantera and metal reactions!!! Also Molly you should start a new reaction journey with Mercyful Fate. You should start and react to their first album Melissa from 1983. I think you will love it!!! A classic heavy metal album!!!
Far Beyond Drive Is Even More Of A Mindblowing Wild Ride...
I'm very excited to hear it!!
Favorite Pantera album ! Flawless from start to finish !
Yeah this album is amazing, they bring so much energy to it!
Far Beyond Driven is another good one and even heavier. It is the heaviest album to debut at number one on the billboard charts. FBD is much more abrasive and may take a few listens to fully appreciate it. When most metal band go softer when they find commercial success, Pantera decided to up the heaviness.
I am looking forward to hearing it!
Hi, me and my best friend are enjoying your vlogs. We saw the notification that you posted a new video and jumped with joy! We are now watching!
Oh that's awesome! Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy the video.
@@mollyesanbornWe enjoyed your reaction, the sound definitely gives a Noughties vibe
@@mollyesanborn I’ve discovered lots of new artists, bands and genres from your channel! Your vlogs are fun and awesome! :D
@@glx3846 that makes me happy to hear! Glad you've discovered some new music through the videos :)
This one is a perfect blend of thrash and groove metal👌🤘
Spot on, they really do fuse the 80's sound with the more heavy, intense thrash metal that followed in the 90's. Clearly a very influential album on the metal scene at the time.
Such a good album. Really its the only one where Phil demonstrates his amazing singing ability, before he moved on to low screams and stuff. I like his later singing/screaming too, but this album is just really unique in that regard :)
Pantera is never a miss
100%
My fav Pantera album
They were heavy but still groovy and Anselmo vocals were more diverse.
With time all of those things got lost. I still enjoy the other albums but this is the one for me
Heavy and groovy, absolutely! This is such a crushing album but somehow so much fun at the same time... I love how Pantera blends the two styles so well!
Dimebag was amazing!! I need to listen to this album again!
If you listen to the full discography, definitely check out Power Metal. It's very underrated and often skipped over. It's their first album with Phil Anselmo on vocals and it marks the shift into their heavier sound. It's almost like Judas Priest meets Metallica.
Another great album by Pantera.
The brothers are the real beasts of Metal
Lighter lit up whenever I hear Cemetery Gates. My favorite song from that album ❤
WOOO NEW MOLLY UPLOAD! Also at some point could you do The Cure's Disintegration?
Thank you for watching! And yes Disintegration is an album I'd love to give a full listen to at some point on the channel.
btw cowboys fro mhell is their first studio album and vulgar display is their 2nd. in order they go: CFH, Vulgar display, far beyond driven, trendkill, Reinventing the steel. just thought you should know in case you get confused
Fun fact: before phil (their vocals) joined pantera and pantera became pantera, they were actually a glam metal band which is why on some tracks like shattered and heresy there are some really high voice vocals and high pitch guitars and they dont really feel like pantera songs, not a lot of sludgey heavy riffs and growls
Also Dominations breakdown is the best in metal history and dime was the best guitarist you cant argue with that
Thanks for the explanation, that makes a lot more sense now. I'll definitely continue with Far Beyond Driven, Trendkill, and Reinventing The Steel here on the channel. And I will not argue with you on those last two points, Domination is an absolutely killer song and Dimebag Darrell sure knew his way around a guitar. Such a talented musician.
This will be another great catalog to react to 👍
Absolutely, I'll definitely plan on doing more Pantera reactions!
@@mikestelzer2027 thanks for the input, I'm definitely looking forward to hearing their next three albums following Vulgar Display of Power!
Another well crafted reaction video. My favorite was the Title Track...
i highly recommend you to listen their live performance of cemetery gates and domination especially with a bit older phil with his low vocals
I'll definitely have to do that!
My favorite Pantera album! 🤘🏻
Yeah this album is fantastic! So glad I finally checked it out.
This is Pantera's first album. Vulgar Display is their 2nd.
Incorrect. This was made in 1990. They had several others in the 80's before this one. I suggest you go do some research. Then delete your comment.
I know they released four albums leading up to Cowboys From Hell, but they had a different vocalist and a very different style as well (glam/power metal). Maybe I'll check their early stuff out at some point too, would make for a fun listen!
I knew about the glam era that people made fun of...I didn't realize it was under the name Pantera.
Molly always loves the stops and tempo changes. Molly is a Thrasher. \m/ I have loads of recommendations.
Hmm, perhaps I am a thrasher at heart haha! Definitely feel free to leave any further suggestions in the comments! :)
So many awesome suggestions, I appreciate the list! Slayer-Reign In Blood has been on my radar for a while, I'll try and get to it soon! 🤘
Next there : Far Beyond Driven Album
SLAUUUUGHTERRED
Awesome!!! Far Beyond Driven should be next if you continue with Pantera. But if you want something funky i recommend blood sugar sex magik by the chili peppers. That album has some nice deep cuts on it
Recommend "Far Beyond Driven" next. It hit #1 on Billboard when it debuted. Its even heavier.
I cannot wait to give it a listen! :)
My god it's going to be 20 years this December.
This album is sooo fun!!
Absolutely, I really enjoyed this one! Pantera sure knows how to bring the energy in bucketfuls.
I absolutely love your reactions, they are so precise, not to mention you are very cute.
Aw thank you! Glad you're enjoying them :)
Best solo ever on The sleep ! RIP dime and Vinnie
I know it’s not your style, but maybe consider uploading full separate versions to the most known/requested reaction songs, like cowboys from hell and cemetery gates, I love this format of the whole album but maybe it could help with some more views since a lot of people look for the reactions for those specific songs and moments like those screams at the end of cemetery gates, just an idea, love your work and wish you well🖤
that'll make her channel like the other million tho
@@user-sr6ki8xo6c I understand, as I said, I know it’s not her style, just saying she deserves more visibility, and I think extracting the full reactions of specific popular songs can be a good chance for her to grow and thus maybe even allowing her to make a living out of content making.
Again I respect any decision she makes as this is only an idea I’m throwing in case it interests her 😊
This style gaurantees no copyright claims.
@@WheresWaldo05 I believe she can just mute the song constantly (as she already does) since the important part is her reaction, thoughts and analysis of it (at least for me as a reactions consumer)
I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion! :)
i saw you doing system of a down whole discography reaction so what do you think about doing daron malakian and scars on broadway reaction? they have only 2 albums and i believe that on the first one you can hear soad drummer (ofc daron on the guitar and vocals), some songs really sound very mezmerize/hypnotize era and are pretty much underrated in soad fanbase
I'd love to check out Scars On Broadway at some point, I will keep your suggestion in mind :)
Far beyond driven!!!
I'll plan on doing a reaction for Far Beyond Driven as well, really excited to hear it! :)
Not yet far beyond driven... But watching you enjoying Domination helps the wait... ;)
Cowboys from Hell is a fascinating album, this is almost perfect in my opinion. Have you checked out Lamb of God or Machine Head? These bands are also pretty solid. If you want to introduce yourself with Groove Metal, then listen to LoG's As the Palaces Burn
Nope I've never heard anything from Lamb Of God or Machine Head! I've got both on my list though, I'd love to hear some of their stuff.
FUCK YEAH PANTERA
be interesting to see and hear what you think about Pantera's 1st couple albums when they were GLAM, before becoming 1 ( if not) the BEST Groove metal bands. without em, no Machinehead ( they have a couple tracks with a Pantera vibe)
I'll have to give their earlier albums a listen too!
Legendary album
If you ever look at the music video to Cemetery Gates you'll notice that the first part, the intro, I guess, has been taken out; it's shortened. Ticked me off when I saw that. And it ticks me off whenever anyone does a reaction to the song using the video...
By the way, I mentioned it before but it might have been in a video that was too old for you to notice, but I see that your intro claims you do movie reactions and I want to ask if you'd react to Nope 2022. I really love watching reactions to that movie.
You gotta do projects in the jungle!
It's SOOOOO different from the other albums
This particular album is its own sound i feel like, with phils vocals, grove and the general direction they we’re headed as a band. Later albums are heavier and vocally more brutal than this one thats for sure. Check out far beyond driven next its next in line after vulgar
Yeah this record has a sort of fun grooviness to it paired with the heaviness, such a great combo of styles. I'll definitely check out their later stuff too.
Amazing album
Absolutely, I loved listening to this one!
Random thought alert....The vocals are obviously way different, but listening the the drums and bass especially, I hear lots of similarities to the music that Anthrax was making around the same time. I'm a huge fan of both bands. I just never noticed it before.
Maybe it's just me.
