IIRC, it's because Tom was sloppy as hell once the songs became faster, to the point where the few times you can really hear the bass in later works it was usually because Kerry or Jeff was playing it on the recording.
The thing with the track Hell Awaits is that the song really gives you the feeling that you're entering the hell and starting to see some crazy shit there and the whole album is like a trip in hell. At least, thats the way i feel when i listen it and it's my favorite from Slayer.
As an "older" metalhead who's been listening to the likes of Maiden, and Dream Theater, for almost 40 years, young peoples' obsession and attitudes towards song lengths and intros continue to confound me, haha. The Hell Awaits intro is iconic, and it wouldn't be the same without it. They also brought part of it back to close out the album if you didn't notice that.
Right? Intros have a purpose. They’re getting you ready. They’re ushering you into this plane of brimstone and fire. It’s conceptually and diabolically genius. I see that they’re wearing Lamb of God and Korn shirts. This album played a hand in inspiring those bands into existence. It poured the foundation upon which these bands can stand today.
At Dawn They Sleep is my favorite. Followed by Necrophiliac. At Dawn.. was Dimebag's favorite as well, I think. The last song ends with the Hell Awaits riff so it circles back into the first song.
The beginning of "Hell Awaits" is simply iconic and legendary and has influenced a lot of bands.. I listen to this album since 1985. Simply astonishing.
RIFF, RIFF, RIFF, RIFF, RIFF, RIFF. They never stop on this album. My favorite one. From the second it starts to the BITTER FUXKING END. The year it came out shows how strong this album is. FUXKING SLAYERRRRRRRRRRR!
Hands down the most influential to death and black metal, although I prefer the more hardcore punk-influenced albums, Reign in Blood and Divine Intervention.
33years ago i ruined 3 turntable needles winding this backwards to hear what the hell the opening backmasked words were, "Join Us" is obvious but the monster voice to this day I still dont know what it says. Crazy good times as a teenager in the early 90s !
@@stephenkeelinjr6252 I think youre misunderstanding the bit I mean their, chief. Join Us backward could very much sound like its saying Slay God now you mention it, but its literally "Join Us" After it fades in saying "sunioj" over and over again until the last bit where a it says something with about 3 or 4 syllables and then the intro to Hell Awaits starts. That last bit is the bit I could never work out.
Crypts of Eternity it's a very progressive song, all those change-ups, and these dudes were very young still to accomplish a song as elaborated as this one. This was, I believe, their second album, which seems almost like a concept album by the way it ends. I like to highlight, as well, At Dawn They Sleep. The whole album is a jewel.
@@m.infernal this album and South of Heaven are my favorites. Hell Awaits it's my all time Slayer's record, although critics say Reing in Blood was the best Slayer's album.
My favorite part of the album and most hype moment is the Intro of Hell Awaits, and within a minute or so they complain about it -__- good lawd lol and then complain 2 ro 3 more times, wut!? Amazing album though, one of my favorites atmospheric albums even though it thrashes so fast. You guys did justice once you got over the song lengths. Liked seeing yall jam out in Necro and Praise of Death
At the end of At Dawn they Sleep with Dave going mad on the Drums, well live that's where Dave would do a crazy drum-solo and then straight into Praise of Death.
Hell Awaits, sinners. Such a straight up diabolical record. Crank it up and you can smell the sulfur. I imagine Old Scratch, Lucifer Morningstar, at the mixing board, wisps of smoke coming off his fingers, smiling at the band. "Yes, this is acceptable to me. You've done well. Now, gentlemen, if you will just sign here."
At Dawn They Sleep was on the Metal Massacre compilation. From Metal Blade Records. If I remember correctly Hit the Lights from Metallica was on it as well. Was a great way to first hear many of the now classic bands. Mail ordered the cassette lol. Damn I am old.
I agree with the middle 3 being my favorite, but I also like Crypts of Eternity, just because of the fact there is a lot going on in it. Thanks guys for your reaction and feedback to this album. Cheers!!!
I miss those days with my group of satanic panic era friends in high school. We did the same thing when Reign In Blood came out. Slayer fans before but Reign was the second album to define my musical tastes.
Crack me up you guys just heard this. Yeah, just awesome when it came out !!!! Still so good !!!! There was nothing like slayer when this came out or Reign in Blood. Top of their game!!! Kerry King is the King !!!!!!
As you stated, giving reviews after a first listen can be problematic in many ways. I recall many albums that didn’t sit the best with me on first listen being some of my favorites later on. Can’t wait for the Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss reviews. Actually I hope you go through every album. Some I like better than others but definitely can’t go wrong with any of them.🤘🏻👍🏻
Having heard Show No Mercy and Reign in Blood beforehand, I didn't like HA in the beginning, not least because of the strange guitar sound. That was true for quite a few years. Now I love it of course, they could do no wrong up to SITA.
Hey broski if you read this, id love to see you review and listen to demilichs nespithe for the first time :) since you like deaths more technical stuff
My only favorite two albums from slayer show no mercy and hell awaits nothing beats it then the rest of the albums slayer has done so far in my opinion.
In my opinion, Slayer's last great album was Reign in Blood. When Tom Araya decided to begin his "singing" career in South of Heaven, it threw everything off for me. Oh, well. They still a lot of great music they made before then.
@@nategin9009 South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss, Divine Intervention, Christ Illusion and World Painted Blood are all great albums in my opinion. Hell for me either Seasons in the Abyss or Hell Awaits is my favourite Slayer album. I go back and forth between the two!
My favorite thing about Hell Awaits is you can actually clearly hear Tom's bass...in future albums, Tom's bass is all but lost in the mix.
Yup...Show No Mercy too. The old mixes were a lot richer.

Definitely agree with this statement

Dave Lombardos favorite as well. One of mine too.
This was probably on purpose as a lot of had this on cassette back in the day. We could flip it over and it flowed
lol u're there too bro
The beginning is "join us" in reverse
Great video. This album is all bangers. I'd argue it might be their best album. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Iv seen Slayer 15 times over the last 32 years and never saw a bad show. They're definitely one of thrash metals greatest.

Brilliant album, top 3 Slayer albums for me. And great video guys, I'm going to watch your reaction to Haunting the Chapel now.
At Dawn They Sleep kicks ass on this album, got my ribs cracked in the mosh at a Slayer show, caught a Kerry King pick nonetheless....
Imagine loving this as it was a better way to live than your home life. My hell awaited.
1986 no joke.

@@jmetalhead17 yeah buddy, put Hell awaits into a DAW and reverse it, you easily hear it say "Join Us" at the very beginning of "Hell Awaits" song.

The monster voice after the backwards “join us” is not backwards, and it says “welcome back”, if that’s the monster voice you’re referring to.
@lino522 that sounds highly likely , and yeah that's the bit I was meaning. Cheers!

Playing this on the drums is an adrenaline spill… the blood👍
On the Hell awaits album Slayer tried to copy the “underproduced” raw sound that Venom had on Welcome to Hell.
Venom one of earliest Black Metal bands I first heard them in 1984 and was hooked
RIP Jeff❤️
The Intro is the best thing in Heavy Metal History💪💪💪
Into the Crypts of Rays 2nd best intro
Waiting for REIGN IN BLOOD !!!
Also interesting would be KREATOR - Pleasure to kill
@@C-Ro and Demolition hammer Epidemic of violence !!!

Yes, the album begins and ends with the same riff / drumbeat. BTW that beat was amazing and revolutionary at the time.

Alright boys…. Now you might be ready for Cannibal Corpse “The Bleeding”
This record was heavily influenced by Mercyful Fate - hence the longer, more progressive feel to the songs. Definitely my favorite Slayer LP.
If you have it on vinyl and play the first song backwards, what sounds like chanting becomes "Join us."
Looking forward to Reign in blood reaction
