Covering the Basics - Drybrushing and Shades

  • Beginning with the very simplest techniques I can demonstrate, here's a Cadian officer painted start to finish with explanations along the way and a little discussion about how the methods used can be applied. My apologies that the video wiggles around quite so much to begin with; I hadn't quite figured out what setting was making it behave so strangely!
    If you've got any requests or specific miniatures you might like to see me paint or know how I'd go about them, feel free to drop a comment and I'll see what I can do! If I have the miniatures necessary to hand I'd like to make this a regular thing, demonstrating the easiest and quickest methods possible to get your models on the table, fast!

      Thanks for dropping in! :D I find there's nothing quite like being able to see something in action to get a grasp on how it's meant to look. I'm a visual learner, and reading a dry, seemingly arcane description of how I ought to try something isn't quite the same as someone just bashing out the brushes.

    Brilliant, that simple wash is exactly the type of effect I was looking to add to my Grandsons 30 Airfix British Paratroopers, plus the varnish advice.

    This is great stuff, one thing i notice that differs from other popular tutorials, is that you don't go back after the wash and re-block the base color, This keeps the subtility of the wash, I really need to try this on my next project, it will be faster too!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it depends on what result you're looking for, or what finish you'd like to get. I've experimented a little with re-blocking the base colour and I find that for gaming figures it tends to blend the highlights in a little too closely to the base colour, meaning they aren't as sharp on the table. It's a matter of preference, ultimately, but if I can save myself some time and still get the finish I'm looking for? Bonus. :D

      It doesn't hurt to lean on what you know if you're happy with the miniatures you're turning out, but improving does mean occasionally revisiting the basics. You're really delving back into the classic videos here!

    Great video. ( as always , very informative). A small sugestion. You,re the only mini guy I have seen here that uses the word " undercoat". The " coat" part of undercoat and other words " base coat " was confusing to me at first . (maybe, to you also at times, it seems). How about just sticking to the word Primer? No coat confusion. Just a thought.

    These videos are brilliant, and have single handedly made me want to begin painting guardsman again! As far as shades go, would agrax earthshade still be suitable for a navy armour/grey material colour scheme? Or would a dark shade like a black work more effectively?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had some success using Agrax Earthshade over grey, but with a blue tint it might look a little strange unless you were to block over the navy armour again. For reference's sake, here's how Agrax looks over Stormvermin Fur: i.imgur.com/8dO6t57.jpg

    • @4DaDiamonds
      @4DaDiamonds 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply! If the image is anything to go by, that's exactly the effect I was looking for when thinking about painting mine! I suppose in order to do the armour I could always apply two separate washes (Argax for cloth, nuln oil for armour) which would allow the darker parts to remain different. I'll have to test it out on a few of the cheap guardsmen/conscripts that GW sell in order to get a better idea.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem. :D As it happens, I'm actually editing a video right now which features Agrax Earthshade going straight over Macragge Blue. It might go some way to seeing how it'd work over a navy tone? I'm glad to see someone else remembers those cheap boxes of sacrif-I mean 'volunteers' exist!

    Do you still wash the brushes after the dry brushing technique? Thanks!

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Once you're finished with each colour, you definitely still want to wash them out or you'll get little gritty particulate that you're spreading across all your models - not a great look! Between drybrushes, though, make sure you let your brush have plenty of time to dry; drybrushing with a damp brush will be a disaster if you're trying to save time and paint a bunch too quickly.

    A quick question for you as it relates to the shading. If I shade, should I still use the dip? The reason why i ask is because I am thinking that the shade does darken a but and then if I dip it may get even darker. Any experience with that?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're going to shade, you won't need the dip. Both are essentially doing the same thing, with the provision that the dip also acts as a varnish. You'll need to dull it down afterwards - unless you like the shine! - but the 'brown stuff in the recesses' trick comes from shade or dip, whichever you're using.

    How often should you rinse your brush while applying paint. Paint seems to dry on my brushes while im using them.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, there's not really a right answer to this one. Ambient temperature is a big problem to grapple with! If you're having paint dry regularly on your brush, try watering it down just a little thinner than you usually would, which might help. Otherwise, if it's the height of summer, you'll probably just need to rinse your brush more regularly.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely! I find that the main trick is in using just a fraction less water than I usually would, but two or sometimes three coats are still necessary. I'll see what I can find to slap some red on to demonstrate!

    Is that paper you're using as a palette?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are the Citadel palette pads. They're pretty good! Anything with a non-porous surface will work, though, so while ordinary paper won't do the job, something like an old plate or polished tile will work fine.
