While a majority of Japanese Arcade Rhythm Games on the market right now are made by either Sega or Konami, WACCA is a rhythm game produced by a company that had never entered the rhythm game space before. Come learn about the history of this circular rhythm game!

It’s hard to compete against Maimai’s popularity in asia. That being said, Wacca hit the hearts of the western audience. It’s a great introduction to people who don’t traditionally play rhythm games. To us crazies that aren’t scared of stuff like sound voltex’s controls, this is less daunting for your average westerner to try. I see it all the time. It’s a good inspiration moving forward

Speaking as a Japanese player who started playing wacca since the location test, I really liked wacca and used to play it all the time after school. Well, until covid hit Japan that is. While I think bad timing plays a big role in the death of Wacca, I personally think Marvelous also missed a huge opportunity by locking the Expert difficulty. As someone who's already actively playing 5 other rhythm games at the time, unlocking songs sadly just became too bothersome for me to continue playing (in the context of 2020). Yes, I know, there were login bonuses and like chunithm you could purchase an EX ticket on the in-game shop, but that uses the in game currency, which is also used to unlock songs. which might not be as bad under normal circumstances (I think it's as bad as maimai pre-dx' unlock system) but think about it, say if a sizable chunk of people who were playing wacca regularly come from other games, they'll probably prioritize their main game first in the limited time game centers were allowed to operate in 2020. Which reduces the time slot for playing Wacca, less time unlocking stuff, leading to less play. This is all speculation but that's what happened to me at least.
That said, I really hope Marvelous consider making a successor someday. RIP Wacca, You will be missed.

I guess one reason wacca is so popular in the U.S. is due to the inaccessibility of maimai cabinets in the West. Both Wacca and maimai are designed to be more casual experiences that also cater to die-hard music gamers (through insanely difficult charts and commisioning famous rhythm game artists). But maimai is already too popular in Asia for wacca to challenge the market by the time of wacca's entry.
Now let's pray sega actually spend the effort to bring more chunithm and maimai cabinets to North America. :/

I like Wacca more than Maimai but they are both two completely different games in every regard other than ring controller. It's a shame Wacca is offline because it honestly felt like a breath of fresh air in Rhythm games that merged the worlds of hardcore rhythm game and casual rhythm game alongside a fantastic soundtrack and song list. And it had the production power to boost. Everything from the UI, characters and general feel look fresh and great. It was like playing pop'n or bemani for the first time all over again

the first arcade rhythm game i touched was wacca in april 2021, and it was during a scary time while i was recovering from a surgery and under a lot of stress. wacca brought me into the community, and it became something so dear to me; the art was beautiful, and the aesthetic grabbed me, and all of the amazing music kept me coming back. it was very loved and cherished at me round1. even though it is offline there, i still play it and continue to get better. wacca forever

In the final message and in Dive with U, they say things along the lines of "See you again" so I think there's a fair chance that, though it of course won't be Wacca, Marvelous (maybe partnered with Tano*C) will come and make another rhythm game. Hopefully they use what they learned with Wacca so it starts on a better foot and hopefully the world situation is a bit better for its run.

Me and a co-worker were talking about rhythm games recently and I brought up WACCA as I used to play the game a lot, especially in 2020-21. He then told me about this video and said I should watch it. Very good video. Really brought back some memories. Figured I tell my story.
It was October 2020. A Round1 location just opened up in Deptford, NJ which is where I lived at the time and was even there for the grand (well, soft) opening. Still have the Round1 t-shirt that I got that day for being one of their first customers. Anyhow, the game that made me want to go to Round1 at the time was Groove Coaster which I was playing a lot of on mobile at the time and I did enjoy playing it in the arcade… for about a month. I would’ve enjoyed it more if people didn’t break the boosters all the time. Due to that, I started to try out other rhythm games like SDVX, Project DIVA Arcade and Theatrhythm All-Star Carnival. However, one rhythm game stuck out to me and that was WACCA (WACCA Lily to be exact). I played it once and just like that, I was hooked right then and there. Every time I went to Round1, I would go play some WACCA, sometimes, it would be the only game I played that day at Round1. If an event was going on, I would play 10-15 credits in a single day because I wanted to unlock everything. Hell, I think I was actually the only person at my Round1 location to unlock everything from the D4DJ and Azur Lane events. Also, the feeling of getting an ALL MARVELOUS was great. I think had around 50 of them. I would go check but… you know.
However, times would change in 2022. I was getting more busy and when I wasn’t busy, I was spending more time dealing with the massive backlog of games I had at home which was created due to my constant time playing WACCA the previous year. I still did play WACCA in 2022, just not as much. However, when that announcement came out that the servers were shutting down, l couldn’t believe it. I refused to believe it… but it was true. To make it worse, the Summer of 2022 was an insanely busy time for me, didn’t even have much time to play games at home so I didn’t have much time to even go to Round1 and enjoy WACCA in its final months. I did at least manage to play it a few days before the servers were shut off. Played a few credits just to say goodbye. I’ll never forget when I played DIVE with U as my last song. The moment the song ended, I tried to hold it in but I couldn’t and I just cried. I did feel a little embarrassed admitting that originally until some other WACCA players told me the same thing happened to them. Some players even told me the moment the servers shut down, it felt like something that was part of their life was just… gone and I actually did find that relatable.
After WACCA went offline, I tried to fill the void that was missing at Round1. Groove Coster was still dealing with busted boosters and I could never get good at games at IIDX like I used to be or SDVX (in my mid-30s with carpal tunnel issues. It sucks.😩). Only game that did get my attention during that point was Chrono Circle… and then it didn’t anymore. I think the game has some potential but I don’t think it’s even trying to live up to it. In the end, I just spent more time messing around with the crane machines for the remainder of 2022.
And then 2023 came. I was getting ready to move out of NJ and move somewhere around Lancaster, PA. Saw they have a Round1 here which is nice. I been there a few times since moving here in July 2023. Played a bit of Music Diver which I do like quite a bit. However, I remember the first time I walked into the Round1 Lancaster location back in May during a break from doing open houses with my realtor and right there as you walk in from the outside… is WACCA. I did play a couple credits last month for old time sake. Still love it. Still makes me sad that the servers are shut off. I honestly do have to agree with you on thinking the pandemic played a part in the end of WACCA.
Nowadays, we see all these WACCA collaborations in other rhythm games which is always nice to see the legacy of that game continue to this day. However, one collaboration I would love to see is WACCA in DJMAX Respect V. It just needs to happen.

It's crazy how dedicated people were over here for this game. Our Wacca cab had a 5 person line at times, and when the news about EoS dropped our local R1 Discord imploded. One of the players has since bought a cab for their home. I liked Wacca, but for me it was just something to play while waiting for iidx or SDVX. It was just way too easy, within an hour of playing I had Stage X, and was playing 13s.

Hey guys! I know this isn't related to the video or to wacca (its more like a suggestion actually) but did you guys know that bandai namco actually tried to make another rhythm game in 2015? Its called synchronica (シンクロニカ) and right now! Its literally gone and you can no longer play it because bandai namco pulled the servers for synchronica in september 2019... making it a dead rhythm game.
Also if your wondering, the gameplay for synchronica was similar to beatstream which means you have to hit the notes using your hands which also means that most of the time you CAN'T see the notes so... something tells me that making a touch screen rhythm game ONLY works for mobile games and NOT arcade games... or maybe bandai namco was aware of synchronica's future because 2019 will be the year where covid-19 will make its first appearance and will ruin everyones life!

  • @Goatgarien

Great video and I like how you touched on no English support likely being a contributing factor (i agree)
I'd also like to add that another factor was likely due to them developing the game using SEGA hardware and network instead of their own inhouse hardware/server, which likely increased the costs to run the game substantially...
I think comparing it to Groove Coaster, which is also a dead game at this point, but is still "online", is important to see how it could've ended if they had been running the servers themselves instead of through SEGA.
While Covid was probably the biggest factor, ignoring EN speaking players and licensing SEGA hardware/network was likely also quite large factors that could have prevented it from outright failing.
I love WACCA and I hope I can continue to play and keep it alive (in my own way) here in America

Dude, I loved wacca so much. Like, it was the only rhythm game that made stop playing pump it up for a bit. I wish I could of supported it a bit more, but my local r1 stopped getting updates for a while during the pandemic, stunting its popularity over here. The cab is still here, but it mostly just makes me depressed seeing it in such a state.

Wacca is my favorite arcade rhythm game. I discovered it from Tano*C songs being added to D4DJ and and from there I started listening to USAO specifically and then Mobius released. It said "from wacca" and I had no idea what it meant so I went searching and fell in love with the music and became mesmerized with how unique and fun the game play seemed. Its like the game was made just for me mixing Lam's art and Tano*C's music. I finally got to play the game some time last year after going to round 1 for the first time. Sadly Round 1 is over an hour from where I live so I don't get to play often unless I plan a whole trip there or happen to come across a cabinet at a convention, although luckily I've been seeing Wacca cabinets at cons lately so that makes me really happy. I had no clue I started playing the game after it died tho...

Thanks for the video on WACCA, very concise, good length video that can introduce just about anyone to it.
I started playing WACCA only earlier this year and completely fell in love with it. I used to play rhythm games more when I was a lot younger, strictly BEMANI titles, mainly pop'n (evident from my profile). As someone who never consistently played (because I just couldn't as a teenager with restricted options back around 2010~2016), it was pretty hard to get past any significant barriers because the scoring on BEMANI games tend to be pretty strict. Lead to a lot of unhealthy mentalities over what is just supposed to be a game to enjoy, by the end of the day.
WACCA and Chuni both can get really challenging, but what I liked was how incredibly nice it is in scoring their players, lol. Kinda brings relief to me and plus the play style is super fun, using your arms kinda allows you to be more expressive during play if you wanted. Getting S's easily and having the characters praise you does stuff to the brain. I think Nostalgia is probably the only KONAMI game that is similarly friendly to new players or casuals, which I also largely enjoy, but it lacks the same kind of UI sense and music genres that I think the current generation is more into right now.
I sincerely hope WACCA makes a return, because for sure I've only heard positive reactions from people on the Western side. And it's clear how much the dev team genuinely cared. You don't see that a lot anymore, esp with KONAMI's current state. Here's hoping.

My local arcade (shoutout to GamePlay in Glen Burnie MD) is an independent arcade that has some used import rhythm games in there (A lot of the Konami games set up with Eagle and a couple others) and they got a Wacca cabinet in there earlier this year, I definitely have to agree on the point that it's approachable if you're familiar with other rhythm games because I usually try to ease my way in when trying out a new rhythm game but so much Chunithm had me prepared to play on hard and expert the first day it was in there lol

I never understood why WACCA flopped the way it did. It is so different and unique that the first time I got to play on a machine in august this year at Gamescom, me and my siblings (all 3 of us avid rhythm game players for years) got so hooked that my sister working at Gamescom even when to the hall earlier just so she could play. It was exciting to see how, even though there were DDR machines and other rhythm game machines this "new" thing was what people were queuing for like crazy. Sadly, due to how insanely packed gamescom was i could only play one song myself, but it was fun. Only later the person in charge for it told us that this was discontinued.
I remember how we had accidentally crashed the thing and joked between us how, maybe because of Gamescom, the machine isnt online - and the guy just flatly went "No its never online" :(

This is my second favorite rhythm game behind IIDX (SDVX is 3rd and Chunithm 4th) even though I only played it for the first time after it went completely offline (I didn't know it had). I find it far more approachable and aesthetically appealing than Maimai. My Round1 (brand new as of March) opened with a single offline cabinet, and there's another location nearby with one on free play. Great time every play. I could spend hours on it.

Besides covid and maimai/chunithm, the unlock system was a bad design that made players like me eventually chose other games. I don't know whether this vip system in chinese version was different from japanese and international version. Some songs were only available for vip (not just expert levels, all difficulties of those songs), others had the expert level lock for non-vip. With price per game higher than maimai (at least here), you can't even get the full feature without that vip. No wonder there were usually fewer people playing wacca despite its unique design.
It's lucky that wacca partially survives in China. Online mode remains, but almost all vocaloid and anime songs are gone due to copyright. No idea how long the agency here can maintain this on their own.
