    For those wondering about Groove Coaster, I avoided it for the reason of the game versions available at home. The most "loyal" version of Groove Coaster to the arcade is Groove Coaster on Steam, which is pretty similar but honestly quite a bad version of Groove Coaster. I also didn't want to mention WaiWaiParty because while that game is supported, it isn't really a substitute/port of the arcade version. And there aren't sims. So I focused on the games that I knew had good ports of arcade content. Thanks for watching everyone!

      I've played the steam release for a good number of years and while I'm not skilled enough to get full chains on the super difficult tracks I'd say my more casual experience with the game has been extremely positive.
      I've asked around the community to try and gather a reasoning as to why that port is so universally trashed on. The most common points is that on higher difficulty tracks the game won't register inputs correctly and can botch runs. Another being that the window to successfully hit a note is variable depending on the track you are playing.
      Now I understand why that is frustrating for very dedicated fans of the series who want a very close arcade experience at home. But for a large majority of people playing the game, they won't even notice these issues. I do notice that each song has slight differences in when it wants you to hit notes. It's never broken or unplayable like some would lead you on to believing. I am unsure if it's an oversight or intentionally programed to be that way.
      Overall I understand your omissions to include it on the list. I personally believe that Groove Coaster for Steam is a solid home experience for the game for a large majority of players.

      @@SandraThePhox For me the biggest complain about steam version is actually that it is almost never updated (lacks content), and controller support is not good.
      Another issue is that for arcade experience, you would need an arcade style controller. Although things like Yuan con exists, the feeling is still quite different.

    • @SandraThePhox

      @@asesidaa3679 It use to get free updates that added songs but that was years ago. I think by now the game is largely abandoned. Maybe we'll get another PC release in the future that fixes a lot of the complaints, but that's just wishful thinking.

    I think the accessibility scale was super weird. In my opinion, it's completely irrelevant. Just because a game uses a touch screen doesn't make it better as a rhythm game you can play at home, right? SDVX being more "accessible" than Taiko makes absolutely no sense. The other two scales should be the only ones that matter, with the ability to obtain a good controller being the biggest factor.
    If I were to make a scale, the factors would be:
    Ease of obtaining a controller, weighted by cost (because SDVX probably has the cheapest arcade accurate home controller right now)
    Then the amount of official content and community involvement (# of custom charts/how often new customs come out for simulators)
    Then I'd also note if a game is fine to play with other, easier to obtain control methods. For example, Taiko and DDR are VERY playable with controllers/keyboards, which is very accessible. It was a little unfair to say that Theatrhythm and Project Diva are 5/5 on input device because you can play them with any controller, but you can use a controller for taiko too, so if you had to compare them, you should either do arcade controller to arcade controller (PD would drop to 3/5) or the most accessible official control scheme to the most accessible official control scheme (Taiko would raise to 5/5). Maybe split them out.
    (You can also play SDVX with a controller if you're a madman, but that has never officially appeared in a game, while in the home taiko releases, regular controllers are supported by default.)
    I just think this video glossed over a lot of intricacies of what I think are really important deciding factors in what makes a rhythm game great to play at home. (I am very biased because Taiko is one of my personal favorites, and I think it's extremely accessible and great to play at home)

    • @radiantansel202
      @radiantansel202 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with this comment so much, and in some cases it even feels like the opinions were made with bias.
      Heck, with your comparison I would even drop Diva even lower because of the touch panel for an arcade accurate experience, while Taiko controllers are extremely damn cheap or easy to come by, either for new platforms or getting something for the PS2 or Wii for example.
      Maybe I'm also angry a little since the lack of mention of Groove Coaster, which is literally free on mobile (Making it literally a 6/5 qualification for the video standard) is not mentioned.

    So heres the funny thing about Chrono Circle in regards to the controls... The drive and spin notes are the only ones dependent on special hardware. The entire rest of the game functions via the touchscreen. All the touch notes, but also the button notes. The buttons legit just press touchscreen stylus tips into the screen.

  • @michaelliu8887
    @michaelliu8887 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I would argue Taiko with its drum-like control is more accessible than a touchscreen control. I think that for many people a physical hit on a drum is easier to understand than tapping an abstract button on a touch screen.

    • @lightninstriker10
      @lightninstriker10 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The accessibility scale was for how easy it was to get into out of the box, nowhere outside of online stores and specialty shops in North America sell Tatacons, and while it has a PC version through Xbox Game Pass, they patched it pretty quickly to absolutely destroy mod support, ergo even playing that version ideally is completely gone. This isn't even mentioning that a universal Tatacon doesn't exist officially, needing to buy a drum for each major platform when they cost upwards of $65 USD isn't exactly accessible to a casual audience.

    Interesting list, but imo your “Accessibility of Gameplay” ranking defeats the whole point of arcade rhythm game which is mostly all about unique control schemes.
    If I want to play a direct touch input I’d just stick with mobile game on ipad tbh.
    Buttons only input being ranked 3/5 doesn’t make much sense either since many people definitely find mania-type game just as easily accessible.

    Why no mention of Pump it up? Pump has been out just as long as DDR, and it has a huge following. I started on DDR, but moved over to pump and never looked back. It belongs on this list just as much as DDR does. I would say that pump is slightly less accessible at home. The sims aren't nearly has intuitive, and you'd have a harder time finding a pad. You also didn't mention ITG is strictly available through stepmania. Stepmania has been around for 20 years and it's been updated and tweaked to give players the best home experience.

    Have to give a special shoutout to Groove Coaster, which by your scale would hit 3/5 for accessibility (3.5 if you want to count the mobile version), 5/5 for input device, and 5/5 for availability (on PC, Switch, and mobile, but only Switch is peak port performance)

    very interesting video.
    thinking of creating something similar for the UK as we literally do not have any officially supported games here.
    i feel like there are a few more details to consider for games at home, eg. availability of controllers and the cost of shipping etc.

    I was just looking forward to a video like this! I have a note about dance rush
    There is an upcoming VR game called Dance Dash that just launched on Kickstarter less than 2 weeks ago, and it is essentially a dedicated version of Feet Saber (AKA DanceRush at home). It has a custom chart editor as well so I expect a lot of DanceRush songs.
    With that said, it’s still not very accessible due to it requiring some form of VR setup (though it is supposed to be compatible with quest 2 standalone using the controllers strapped to the legs for the feet). But I feel like with dance games like DRS and Dance aRound being so based on real dancing, it is relatively easy to shadow play via song charts uploaded on TH-cam, albeit the experience is not the same without feedback from the game.

    There are a few similar, casual friendly/streamlined games akin to circle games like Wacca. Rhythm Hive, JYP Superstars, Colourful Stage just to name a few are all free on mobile. Rhythm Hive is my favourite of the 3 I named purely on mechanics and accessibility. I have friends who are brand new beginners to rhythm games that are able to see quick progress and get to harder difficulties relatively quickly and I have other friends (myself included) that have been playing rhythm games or games in general their whole lives and have engaging challenge. Super simple controls that are incredibly lenient for players that can't or don't want to do stuff like slide notes but if you feel like it you can engage with the more advanced mechanics like that. Rhythm Hive has at least 100 songs, if not closer to 200 and it's 100% free to play. The daily play currency really isn't a huge deal either. You earn enough free premium currency that you can buy however many more plays you want and always have an excess. Plus for 5 dollars you get 20 more that stack over the normal amount that refill AND 20 based on the group you pick (40 total and if you dont use up the universal ones theyre permanent so after the month that the 5 dollars lasts for you get 600 plays that you can stock up on which is really easy since playing 20 songs takes a while).
    Available on phones, intuitive touch controls, 100% free to play with virtually no payments ever necessary (seriously its really only how much you feel like spending. ive logged a couple hundred hours and only spent 5 dollars), easy for beginners and engaging with a high enough skill ceiling. The biggest downside is that it's not the hardest game ever. There isn't a single song that I can't reasonably FC and I'm only okay at rhythm games; above a casual but far FAR from an expert. But playing along to music I'm listening to anyway with enough challenge to be fun, can't recommend it enough.

    I love BMS! Beatoraja my beloved. I have a DP setup at home because there's no IIDX machines for like 9 hours away from me. I would get Infinitas but like I don't want to worry about another expensive monthly subscription and having to unlock content.
    The PS2 emulator adds an annoying amount of input delay. And Infinitas is expensive.

    i have to disagree with project diva
    playing with a controller is absolutely hellish once you get above hard - reading double/triple notes is not easy at all with a controller since you're meant to read it like the arcade layout
    for example: 2 notes each on the far corners of the screen will always be triangle + circle, not really intuitive to do at all on a controller
    hold notes are not as difficult but still unintuitive
    to keep a hold going and still be able to press other buttons you usually have to use macros and switch from the face buttons to the triggers a lot
    in general a lot of patterns require unintuitive macros. i love project diva, but it's not as accessible. although i may be thinking too much of everything extreme and above difficulties lol
    also it can get really expensive, megamix on switch has a lot of dlc, and if you want it all it comes out to around 100 usd ! controllers aren't cheap and official ones are really rare

      It's interesting, i think you are right since in the video he only speak about Project Diva Arcade Future Tone.
      However , if we speak about Project Diva Arcade with its console version Project Diva , PJD 2nd , PJD Extend in that case the 13.5/15 would be fair .
      Even if i don't fully agree with "input device" and "Accessibility of Gameplay" ranking points.
      In that case , Taiko no Tatsujin on PSP would have 13.5/15 and DJMax Technika Tune on PSVITA (based of DJMax Technika arcade) would be noted 15/15 because it's essentially like a mobile screen game .

    • @samsaisabug
      @samsaisabug 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Diva is not hellish above hard, it requires practice like any other rhythm game. If anything, songs with lots of single button spam are easier on a gamepad because you have two face buttons. I play the game a ton, but I see casual players do just fine with a gamepad on extreme.

    I think the accessibility category makes no sense, I think the level of "touchscreen-ness" of a given game means nothing. I think a game that is played well on a PC keyboard is just as accessible given how integrated computers are in NA. For an example, BMS.
