Hey Elliot, just letting you know that an instant giveaway that it's a reshell is that on a real one you should NOT be able to see the speakers through the plastic. Which I think in the video you actually point out. So unfortunately yes, it is a reshell and a common thing I'm tired of seeing people do
@@megamix5403Nothing's wrong with reshelling, however there's everything wrong with reshelling something and then basically scamming people by saying it's the real deal.
@@megamix5403Nintendo has quality protection, and that's why they put their seal of quality on their products (which this one even went as far as faking that. Nothing wrong with reshells if you sell it as a reshell. But it's definitely a scam to dress an old ds up as a new and rare version just to hike up the price.
I actually had this!! I bought it off eBay back in the day, think maybe around 2011 or so for around $140 USD. I think I still have it in storage somewhere. It was definitely a bootleg cause the serial was scratched off and I had the "American" box. Didn't come with headphones as you suspected.
I actually watched the video before commenting, I can say I enjoyed this video. It was short, informational, and most importantly entertaining. Thank you for the video, Elliot.
I believe it might be one of the Dream World artworks from Generation V. Most to all of the Pokémon up to Gen V have simplistic artwork for Dream World.
Another giveaway in my opinion, is that it was listed as an American console yet in all the menus they had Japanese text along side the English text, even in the games
Since the DS was meant to be Japanese, it being Japanese was the closest thing, which almost made it real, but yes - it claiming to be American at the same time was not right.
on any ds you can change the language no matter the region, he also put in a japanese copy of new super mario bros so thats why it was in japanese (neat thing the original DS models arent region locked, they were only region locked starting with the DSi)
@@souldew2 Depends on the DS, for example, Japanese DSi models do not have the language settings available for the system menu and require modding to change it. Also: DSis also aren't region locked, outside of downloadable titles.
Bro as soon as he opened the DS my jaw actually dropped. That plastic is insanely thin, I could clearly see the speakers surrounding the speaker grills
It’s not that it’s thin (I bought the same shell to use for myself), it’s the same thickness as an OEM shell. The difference is there’s not enough pigment additive in the plastic to make it opaque, leaving it translucent. I ‘fixed’ mine by adding paper against all the visible surfaces on the inside.
Yea as others said it's a de facto fake, I got a real one (no box) for $150 USD around 2 weeks ago and it has 0 see through plastic and Pikachu has a nose on the front symbol of him
its a old knock off that logo on the front on the real one were impression not printed on the surface. A real pikachu ds is selling for around 1,000 to 1500 quid
I think it's really interesting to see how far some console forgeries go. Going in for a penny, in for a pound with a box and information. In some ways I think these forgery videos can be more fun, it feels like you're on a treasure hunt!
I have one of these from 2010. I bought it off ebay. It was shiny pink lid, matte black body- not a real combination nintendo ever sold, but kid me didnt know that and thought it was a special edition from Hong Kong (where the ebay listing said it was located). Its a reshelled DS made to look legit. the back of the box had warped text, like they tried to scanned an authentic box at a slight angle.
Great video Elliot !! A shame the Ds lite shell and box were a fake, but thanks for the reminder to keep a close eye on any old consoles being bought online That reference to DK oldies had me smiling like a Cheshire Cat 😂
I don't think the box is faded. It just looks that horrible. It obviously also doesn't follow Nintendo's own DS lite box style/template, and is missing a lot of logos and markings a real device would have.
Maybe the original box they scanned in order to make this crappy replica box was faded. I don't remember the box looking this bad in the pictures when they were originally being sold though. The box clearly looked fake, but at least it didn't look faded. It almost looks to me like the faded part was not printed at the same time as the rest of it, or using the same type of ink. I have no idea why they would do it like that but maybe they had a reason. Maybe the reason it looks faded is because they used a black DS Lite for the picture but in order to make it yellow, they just removed the red and green color channels from the image, so essentially the red and green all faded away.
Was about to say, I thought that DS was only released in Japan, but then again I thought the Pikachu GBA SP was only released in Japan, and was surprised to hear in your other video that there was English versions of it. ... and yeah I could confirm it was a fake one, even if it was being sold as an English one but actually Japanese, I still own my yellow Pikachu edition DS lite, and still have the box for it too (the box being square in width and length, not rectangular) Also as some comments said, as soon as you opened it, the speakers definitely are not able to be seen through plastic on a real one too.
I love that you're uploading so much recently! A shame you got scammed but I think it's interesting how much wear the console has on it. Keep up the great videos Elliot!
That's just new nontendo products from the ds lites and up. Nintendo is now trash. I could beat you into the ground with a gameboy, GBA, or GameCube. A ds light's buttons feel like they're falling out just using it normally. Quality has fallen into the ground and I would be careful giving such things to kids. The cheap plastic they use now is absolute trash. Glad I stopped at the original ds. Even the original ds was made like a hummer.
I actually owned this model, back sometime around 2007-2011. I'm not sure if it was a boot, because my mom would sometimes buy stuff off of ebay for me. I definitely don't remember pikachu headphones with mine (though may be misremembering). Main thing that stuck out to me was the color of this bootleg. My model was a much more rich golden color, not this highlighter yellow. The color is a dead giveaway, especially because the original model's logo was visible even with the yellow-on-yellow.
It looks like they took artwork for an orange DS, then only printed the yellow ink to make it look like a yellow DS. Then just pasted the Pikachu logo on top, which is much more clear than the DS.
The highlighter yellow color looks so off on that one haha I got a loose one, used, on the way from Sendico in the next few weeks. Pictures looked authentic and serial number checks out, so fingers crossed it isn't a reshell.
My guy. That version would be thousands of dollars... You can see the scams of the pikachu ds lites right on Google from those "retro game" websites pretending to be legit. You got phucked
I literally bought one of these once on eBay. It was obviously a reshell and the D-pad was sunk into the plastic to where I had no idea how to get it out. It felt very cheap so I eventually sold it to a local game store. They thought it was real and they gave me more cash than I payed for it
As soon as you found the Philips head screw the first thing I thought was DKoldies. Whoever reshelled it did an ok job (and just OK) of cleaning it but were sloppy in other aspects. I guess if it works and isn't exorbitantly expensive though it's not too bad.
I WAS ALSO DUPED BY THE SAME TYPE OF PIKACHU DS LITE!!!! Had the same screws and chinese warranty sticker. What is funny was that my motherboard had some wires running through it, so it was a repaired system.
it being an old ripoff is a funny idea, but i don't think the practice of selling re-shelled mimic special editions is old enough to have that much natural wear, right? they def went out of their way to make it seem well--used and aged. or they just had a bad printer
My first NDS was quite similar. Noticed the similar philips screws on the back which as far as I remember should be triangle. I loved the games but I hated the poor quality thing itself. It was a birthday gift and I hated the fact that the full price was paid for it. And yeah, I hate seeing American NDS boxes because of that xD

I remember the weird shoddy buttons and screen bezels - the external shell itself looked fine. I guess they made a whole lot of them if they're still pulling up on ebay.
China put these out all the time. First off, the special editions box was bigger. Chinese sellers would put refurbed units in a new shell, print off a box for the thing and sell it as new. There is a good likleyhood that the screens were aftermarket as well. It was the difference between them selling the units for $120 - $140 vs $50 - $80. They could sell the special editions for a little bit more on top of those figures as well.

I would guess the shell is off a real ds lite but one that was damaged like with water or switched out for a U.S. motherboard so they can sell it as a real rare Pokémon Nintendo ds lite .And the box is a straight up fake to sell it as new in box. But the shell is rare.
hey elliot I would like to know what you do with these scammed products you bought? I know Sendico doesn’t refund, so do you just keep it in a scam pile somewhere?
You should review the Tomodachi Collection: New Life Nintendo 3DS LL. It was a limited edition Japanese only model that released with Tomodachi Life. I gor it recently and it's so smooth and nice!
I'd call this a refurb. I remember these on Chinese resellers many years ago. I'm pretty sure the box, manual and shell are all fake/repros but the hardware itself (obviously) is real and the charger might very well be. At one point, you could even find DS Phat consoles shoved into an oversized DS Lite shell which I thought was one of the more unique and interesting things China came up with. I hesitate to call it a fake, because as I recall they were never claimed to be genuine limited editions when they were originally sold. I believe they were claimed as brand new though, not refurb, which is obviously a lie, but they weren't priced like brand new limited editions and IIRC weren't priced unreasonably for what they were. And it was quite obvious from the pictures that the box and manual were not original so if they were trying to pass them off as genuine they weren't doing a very good job at it.
A lot of the plastic is far too thin/translucent. The way you can see the glue on the screen's bezel through the plastic, the way the buttons are a blurry see-through mess, the shell is clearly a cheap aftermarket. I'm thinking this is a repro-modded/repaired unit from back in the day that's faked to make you think the unit is new and/or legit. The fact that the serial number that could theoretically be used to control what sort of unit it's supposed to be is worn off despite everything else being as new in the box is also far too convenient.
If it was kept in a warehouse or store with fluorescent lighting and was exposed to it it could have yellowed like this in a matter of months to a few years.
My favorite thing about these videos is how you pretend like you're unsure if it's fake for three minutes even though you've obviously seen enough of these to know the tells immediately lol
