  • There is a fine line between permissiveness and over-control and few parents get it right. Some parents fall too far one way or the other. In this week’s episode, Dr. Shefali helps parents find the right balance between giving their children freedom and healthy boundaries.
Dr. Shefali is a NYT bestselling author of The Conscious Parent, and The Awakened Family. She is also a clinical psychologist, an international speaker and a wisdom teacher, integrating Eastern philosophy with Western psychology.

I must say, Dr. Shefali's books and podcasts have really helped me in so many ways. I can particularly relate to her discussions with the first client I remember struggling to understand my reactions to my 6-year-old child, who cry’s a lot Dr. Shefali's insights helped me recognize what was being triggered within me and what past memories were surfacing.
This awareness has been transformative. I realized that my frustrations with my daughter's behavior were deeply connected to my own childhood experiences. When my daughter was three, she refused to pooh anywhere but at home, holding her bowel movements for days. Now, at six, she avoids going even at home, which has been incredibly frustrating for me.
I now Recognizing the pattern and understanding its roots in my own past has been mind-blowing and has shifted my perspective energetically.
    Thank you Dr. Shefali🤗💜

My nephew had selective mutism until a mid teenager. Now I understand more of why he was that way. So interesting. And omg I see myself with the second guest as my parents couldn't parent in the way I needed them to be as a child. Ty for this ...always learning and growing.

Thank you very much for this episode Dr Shefali. It's so interesting two cases showing two different behaviours, one parent very controlling and the other not enough control. We can learn a lot from this. The extremes are never good. I think that a good balance in our lifes would be great. Maybe if we worked to achieve a balance in all aspects of our life it would the ideal mindset?
Thanks again Dr Shefali, I can't wait for the next episode ❤!

    Great podcast Dr Shefali!
Just since last 2-3 weeks I am noticing that my 8yo wants to have fun all the time and so wants to go to a friends place everyday or somewhere everyday. I have been noticing that she wants to be away most of the time, as much as possible which I feel like it’s a red flag, something needs to change at home.
I wish your time was more affordable :(

Brilliant. I can relate to the first mother more. With that came more with guilt and later shame and coming from a place of lack and loss. Postpartum hit me hard while I was in the miliary. I was then diagnosed with cancer, my oldest son required additional learning support for his learning disabilities all during covid19, and then the induced menopausal symptoms just hijacked my brain, which almost ended my marriage and I wanted to abandon my role as a wife and mother. I was spiraling. My therapist encouraged me to pull back and just simply do nothing. Don't try to fix it, which felt foreign to me. She advised me to use this brief separation to be productive with my own inner healing and needs first. My biggest challenge is calming down the inner fighter in me but also not swaying to the other end of the spectrum out of guilt, etc. I hit rockbottom, but I am steadily crawling out of the bottomless pit.

I can relate quite a lot. Can you tell more about 'pulling back' and 'brief separation' please, what did it really mean?

Really interesting. I think there is an extra layer of insecurity with single parenting. We discount ourselves too easily

My son wet the bed until he started puberty pretty much. So it is still in the normal range to have it last that long as well.
