I have watched at least 15 other reviews of the Maverick. Sam, thank you for bringing new perspectives on the Maverick, and bringing an unbiased critique of a vehicle you own. In particular the radio and transmission.
I have the same truck and the radio sounds good. My father was the sound engineer for Blood , Sweat and Tears and I grew up in a recording studio. It's not Band & Olufsen but its good.
I'm honestly shocked, I turned away from this truck at first because I expected it to be upwards of 30k MSRP just from the looks of it... but this thing's cheaper than a corolla.
@@justcurious7779 yea, i was planning on getting this maverick but no luck in sight, now the corolla cross hybrid is coming, so, what/e is available first near where i live will have my money
I actually own a 21 corolla hybrid & am looking to trade it in for a maverick hybrid first chance I get just because I need a truck bed occasionally but don't need a full on "real truck"
So now I have 6,000 miles on my hybrid Maverick, and it is simply the best vehicle I have ever owned, and I have owned many in the 55 years I have been driving.
Both me and my Parents are enjoying our hybrids. They got an XLT and I got the Lariat. I let the tank get as close to empty as I could and was able to get about 560 miles. I probably could have gone another 20 or 30 miles. I was able to get that by driving mainly on city roads. I even used google maps to find the most fuel efficient path to work. I was able to go about 2 weeks without having to refuel.
I think this was a VERY accurate review. My GF has the XLT, and we feel like it is an excellent value. She is averaging 39.0 mpg with a lot of freeway driving.
I have the same truck, XL Hybrid. I just added a bed liner and bed cover ($800 value) and with state sales tax it came up to a little over 24K. So it is marketed at 19k + but with delivery and tax, it will be close to 24K. So keep that in mind.. However, it is still a bargain and fun to drive.
Nice job again with the Maverick review. Received my XLT hybrid 2 weeks ago. The only option is a full size spare. The truck is quiet. It feels stable and solid, and roomy for a small vehicle. My 30 mile trip to work with small hills and 40-50 mph speeds is showing 45 mpg on the trip summary. Love the truck!
Co-worker just bought one. If one does not care about having 4x4, to go out in the hills , this is a nice little pickup. Good city truck at an affordable price.
Since I've ordered my Maverick, I have been watching different reviews. By far this is the best and most thorough review! I usually do not subscribe to anything but after watching this review I had to! I expect delivery of my Maverick in about a month.

An eCVT is pretty much just a differential. Engine is where the left wheel would be, and the electric motor is where the right wheel would be. How long do those last? Forever. Calling it a "CVT" is a huge marketing blunder.
I keep hearing how truck owners won’t buy this truck. Well, I own a Dodge Ram 1500 that gets 14 mpg. I’m so over owning a truck with such bad mileage. I do construction. Nice review. I have an XL, and get 47 to 52 mpg city and on flat highways, 42 mpg. The kids ride in the back and have no complaints about the A/C in Phoenix. I like the radio way better than the high end one in my Mustang GT Premium. Why?…it works and is easy to use. Sounds fine to me.
Does the hybrid Maverick have a beltless engine? Are all the accessories like the AC compressor, power steering, and water pump powered by electricity? Also does it make a noise at low speeds to warn pedestrians?
Best Maverick review yet! I have the exact same truck ordered as yours, Area 51 base XL. I also have the $100 tow hitch, I picked the drop in cargo mat for $140 as well as floor mats for $175 and a full size spare for $115. I ordered it in Oct 2021 and am still waiting. The price I got had a base price of $20,995, so up $1000 over yours. I ordered this because my Rivian just took forever. I finally got my Rivian and am surprised that Ford is taking so long with this. I am definitely keeping my Rivian, what a truck, and will probably sell my Maverick when I finally get it. I have been given the VIN number and am scheduled to get it around March/April this year, so hopefully real soon.
This is a great review and the setting is wonderful. We reviewed it but learned even more from your perspective. Keep up the great work and we subscribed. By the way - love the hat and boots. PERFECT!
Great review and answered a few questions I had. Ordered a xlt hybrid because I need cruise control and the options rear slider, hitch and 110 outlet at back seat. Looking forward to more videos on your hybrid. Thanks for sharing!
@Ryan Peterson I ordered mine November 13 - two days before cut off order date. My salesman said 8 months for delivery date July 13. I’m hoping for a early delivery date.
i didn't like this truck at first sight but this XL base model impressed me for real. i wish i was living in US to get my hands on one of this and for this price.
I must say that Ford’s antenna is excellent at bringing in a strong satellite signal for GPS mapping and satellite radio! Our Cmax is excellent and it is in a similar area. Ford does things for a reason.
@@USNVA-yn6cp I am old and know how to read maps. I have a cellphone because pay phones suck. Airplanes don’t have navigators anymore, they have GPS devices. Ships of all sizes do not rely on paper charts, they have GPS. How old school are you?
Other than that I think you did an ok job. You did bring forth some important things. The E-CVT was a good explanation! You also did a good job explaining the driving modes. These are important things to me and for most people looking for a decent utility vehicle that isn’t one of those pretentious weekend cowboy truck that cost upwards of 50 to 60 grand! Good job
Thanks for the info! A full dive into the electric meter would be awesome. Like what the green area is for, the 0 to the 100 full power and what that means. I need to break the owner's manual again if it's in there. Thanks again.
There's an EV coach option if you drive into the speedometer display menu. Copilot 360 gets you power mirrors and lane keep assist on the XL, which can automatically steer you back into your lane if enabled.
Heck, my 83 Ranger had an AMFM stereo but only had 2 3.5 inch speakers in the dash. That's it. Finally hooked up an eq amp to it and it helped. And it cost over 10k back than (It was an XL diesel version). I know the radio is way, way, better than that one.
After resetting the sound balance and moving the bass up a tad, it sounds pretty good. And with Android auto, you won't even notice it's shortcomings. Hey Google works and everything.
@Ryan Peterson mid October. At that time the dealer said 6 to 8 weeks. I have no idea if he had a clue, or not. Every month it's been next month, glad I didn't sell my car.
Sam, Great review as always. You have been a good source of information for the new Maverick. Does it have the power flow monitor in the center screen like other ford hybrids?
Sam ….. Thank you for your informative videos very helpful and needed! I to don’t like the Antenna on the Maverick and have found a replacement on Amazon called the Stubby that furs Ford Maverick and New Ford Bronco. It’s sales for 20.00 and has a much smaller profile that is more suitable for the Maverick! Again Thank you and I will always stay tuned!
Great thorough review that covered a bunch of stuff that others didn't like sound quality, ecvt, noise level etc. I'd personally give it a 5 on the value scale, a few years extra warranty on the santa cruz is not worth 4k. You could buy an extended warranty for less on the Ford. Also don't see why many people aren't looking at this potential competition to an entry level SUV, you get ride height, optional 4wd (although I hate you have to go to the gas guzzling eco boost to get 4wd), space for 4 adults and way more utility with the bed for camping trips, bikes, kayaks, ski's etc. How easy was this to order and was it over/under msrp?
Members on the Maverick Truck Club forum have figured out cruise control on the XL. You need to purchase some buttons and a special cable. You then need to remove the steering wheel to swap out the buttons.
there is already work arounds, you can buy the cruise control version steering wheel contols/buttons. and then flash your truck using ForScan and then boom, your xl has factory cruise control. all for like under $100.
Thank you for this excellent review. I like your calm tone and pace. What's great about your review is you know your stuff. Like the differences between the hybrid gas door and the turbo one (There is actually a string underneath the wheel arc to pull and open the hybrid gas door too). Since you own this truck, I'm interested to learn some maintenance tips from you. Like is there a fan for the battery, and how to clean it.
The hybrid battery is liquid cooled and under and outside the passenger compartment. There is no cooling fan or cleaning of it necessary like on cars which have the battery mounted inside the passenger compartment.
My Mavericks inheritor isn't blue. They're not so blue. Mines a Gray+Khaki with orange accents. But I did order the Lariat Luxury with all the bells and whistles.
It still has power steering, brakes, automatic, power locks, power windows and AMFM radio that's compatible with a smart phone....AND led lights........for $21,500. Mine will be here in March
Looks like there's a little room behind the back seat to mount a small, amplified subwoofer truck box. The battery being so close you could gain some decent sound with simple hook up.
He really does make some excellent points in this review. Yes, the maverick isn't a perfect vehicle, but no new car in the 20-25k space is. For instance, we're crossshoping the maverick with more conventional vehicles in that price range, like compact sedans and hatchbacks. We were impressed with the Kia K5, we looked at a Hyundai Veloster, but they stopped making those, and they apparently have quite a few powertrain reliability issues. Also looked at a Honda Civic, the thing is, the Civic felt pretty cramped, and janky on the inside, and it was priced at a little over 25k, slightly over what we'll pay for our xlt maverick. Speaking of the xlt, I think that's the package that gives you the best all around maverick, still great value, especially the hybrid, but resolves some of the issues the base maverick has with the interior. For instance, while the xlt still uses a lot of plastics, it has the best looking interior of all the Maverick's imo. I understand that it may not appeal to everyone, but in terms of straight design appeal, it punches above it's price point. Love the fun use of colors, and materials, brings life to the interior, and elevates it above simply being a cheap, boring interior that you get with a lot of cars. Didn't like the color scheme at all in pics, loved it in person.
Another reviewer basically hit the nail on the head by predicting that the Maverick would be attractive not for existing truck owners, but instead for fans of compact sedan/hatchbacks that would love the extra utility. And as a hatchback owner I'd say that checks. I got the hatchback because of the extra utility, but must say having an open bed would be extremely useful. Wife said it's her turn to get a vehicle...but I'm definitely keeping my eye on the Maverick. With that said, I got to say the Kia Rio 5 door is a very attractive affordable option. I have a 2019 and it's been a fantastic vehicle that is actually fun to drive, and the price is sub 20k for a pretty good package.
@Just think Yeah, I'm not too worried about first year glitches and reliability problems with the maverick because most of the important components have been around for years. It seems like a few people on the forums are having issues, but it's rarely anything major, mostly things like the sync system glitching, and the occasional rattle in the interior. Issues for sure that will be resolved in the coming months, but I'm just glad it's not like the Sante Cruz. Owners of those are already having to get their dcts replaced, having check engine lights come on, and having issues with acceleration. Even people who haven't replaced their dcts have reported a burning smell when they go off-road, or drive in stop and go traffic. That's just some of the issues the Hyundai is having, the full list is much longer than that. I feel for them.
@Just think I think it improves the perception and reputation of ford's cheaper cars for sure. The fiesta and focus were great in terms of the sportier versions, but the lower trims were nothing special, and that dct was a shitbox. Now, ford's retiring to making desirable entry level models, it's great to see.
Sam thank you for all the info on the maverick. I have a FE Maverick Hybrid coming ordered on Aug 12. I have already purchased the tailgate damper. . I found it for under $55 including shipping. The only other thing im going to do is get the struts for the front hood. Hope I get my email tomorrow with my schedule date. Thank you and keep up the good work.
I really appreciate your review on this literally "base" Maverick truck. Sounds like a good buy. I've been trying to determine the right trim & options for me. I look forward to more of your videos. Thanks!
How does the hybrid system compare to Toyota and Honda? Is the transition between gas and electric similar to those, or is it more noticeable? Also, how long can you idle with the AC on before the engine starts?
Virtually identical to any Toyota hybrid in how it feels, operates and behaves. As to how long power can be on with AC running without the gasoline engine, that all depends on how much charge the battery has at the time.
For a delivery and work truck it’s good enough. Good basic car for a senior citizen & Also good as a first car for young driver. Priced lower than teslas hatchback 🚗 that’s supposed to be $25k sometime in the future.
I have a Honda Insight hybrid and while I love it around town, it's absolutely frightening to drive anywhere uphill. Driving to Payson I'm lucky to get up to 60 mph. How is the maverick pickup for Driving up mountains? Have you taken a road trip yet?
I agree with you on everything in this review except about the infotainment system. I think it is appropriate for the price you are paying; otherwise great review.
His exact words were, "It's ok for a base cheap vehicle..." and he made the point that it is surprising that it remains the radio that you get all the way up to the top models.
I heard if you get the optional Ford Co-Pilot360 $650 package it comes with power mirrors on the base model XL since the mirrors are different for BLIS.
Great review Sam... to me my only wish is that the radio was better.. I see most people doesn't like it on the reviews.. Some say it's fine... for the price.... I hope Ford has a fix for the " glitches " in the radio with upgrades later..
I haven't had problems. It works and sounds great after resetting the sound balance and moving the bass up a bit. Android auto means Sync 3 doesn't matter anyway.
We use the same phone with all cars, not the same issues there. The issues reported in this video are common ones many owners have been reporting. There is no getting around the fact this is a junk system.

This is a great review and the setting is wonderful. We reviewed it but learned even more from your perspective. Keep up the great work and we subscribed. By the way - love the hat and boots. PERFECT!
Wow, this guy is really thorough. I feel like I owe him for this or something. Thanks so much for the review!
Nice looking truck! Love the steelies too
You really do your research, concise and thorough. Thanks for putting so much work into these.
Great review and answered a few questions I had. Ordered a xlt hybrid because I need cruise control and the options rear slider, hitch and 110 outlet at back seat. Looking forward to more videos on your hybrid. Thanks for sharing!
ive seen that Ford isnt actually taking Hybrid orders right now cus the reservation demands were so high. Is the website still letting people order??
@@uhohginax3 No
Last day to order was November 15/2021. Ford will start taking orders again this summer.
@Ryan Peterson I ordered mine November 13 - two days before cut off order date. My salesman said 8 months for delivery date July 13. I’m hoping for a early delivery date.
YOU are the FIRST person to mention the gas cap...........what great detail..........you now beat out DOUG for the most corks:)
I've seen this exact model selling for over $25k. Buyers and builders, watch out for those high dealer markups.
Yeah I wouldn't pay it. Dealers are monopolizing.
i didn't like this truck at first sight but this XL base model impressed me for real. i wish i was living in US to get my hands on one of this and for this price.
Having lived in Phoenix, you are right about the missing vents! It isn't a big deal most other places, but AZ certainly requires that.
I'm impressed. I'm going to buy one if the dealers don't jack up the price! Thank you for a great review
I must say that Ford’s antenna is excellent at bringing in a strong satellite signal for GPS mapping and satellite radio! Our Cmax is excellent and it is in a similar area. Ford does things for a reason.
GPS on the Maverick comes from the drivers phone, no on board navigation.
just learn to read a map
@@USNVA-yn6cp I am old and know how to read maps. I have a cellphone because pay phones suck. Airplanes don’t have navigators anymore, they have GPS devices. Ships of all sizes do not rely on paper charts, they have GPS. How old school are you?
@@mitchellbarnow1709 54 Im an old cranky bastard at times!! lol and a 8 year USN man,,,gps does have its place!
The 4G antenna comes in handy for preconditioning the truck so it's nice and cozy when you get in.
15 months after ordering an XLT Hybrid and I'm still waiting for mine.
Best Maverick review on youtube...this Chuck Norris doppleganger is one helluva reviewer
We'll be doing one soon.
Wow! I haven't seen rims like that on a new vehicle since the '80s.
Can't wait to get mine in a couple months!
Me too! The wait is killing me.
Glad to see Ford making a plug in version of this truck too.
They have not announced that yet
Great review on the Maverick and it looks great out in the desert. It makes me more excited about getting my XLT Lux Hybrid.
Is that smaller one (antenna) easy to install?
@@rkalsic Absolutely! Just unscrew the original off the truck and screw the small one on…
Great thorough review that covered a bunch of stuff that others didn't like sound quality, ecvt, noise level etc.
Yeah the vents under the seats are for the heater. I don't think it's even possible to direct A/C airflow to those vents, but I don't know.
Incredible value! I'd buy one too!
We just signed up for one......your review was what we were looking for!
Interesting that you can option a sun roof on the XL but can't get cruise control as an option on XL. Overall a nice little truck.
I'm getting ready to order a 2023 . Great videos !
boots, hats, backgrounds are awesome
This is definitely a truck Chuck Norris would approve of and so would I.
Have a 2023 ordered and appreciate the video. Moving to Hawaii and the gas mileage is the biggest draw.
great review, nice truck especially for the money! What's the payload and tow capacity?
Payload 1500 lbs, towing 2000 lbs
Thanks for reviewing a basic XL model!
Those boots are killing me..🤣
I like your style brother. Great review. Thanks!
If you plug in an iPod to the usb will it work through the radio?
Yes
Make sure you connect the radio to your wifi network and home and update the software!
100%….it always irks me when reviewers flame a system with old software. It takes less than 5 minutes to update and solve all the issues
My Mavericks inheritor isn't blue. They're not so blue. Mines a Gray+Khaki with orange accents. But I did order the Lariat Luxury with all the bells and whistles.
They all share the same blue plastic
It still has power steering, brakes, automatic, power locks, power windows and AMFM radio that's compatible with a smart phone....AND led lights........for $21,500. Mine will be here in March
Excellent everything very well explained very professional
I have to disagree with you about the audio. It isn't junk. I would call it decent at best. It will do for 90% of the buyers.
I agree and the fact that it has AA and CarPlay in the base model is….excellent
Looks like there's a little room behind the back seat to mount a small, amplified subwoofer truck box. The battery being so close you could gain some decent sound with simple hook up.
You can add amplified speakers. No biggie.
Sam, thanks for video. How about highway driving performance and passing ability? Thanks
I am looking at a vehicle that is good for long distance driving. How does this truck rate for comfort?
Reverse is all electric.
Appreciate the review of the base model. It seems all the other Maverick reviews are on the higher-end trims.
With inflation out of control , this is phenomenal.
Thank you Sam. I need cruise is it available on the hybrid as an option or add-on?
Fantastic review video. Thank you. Considering this pickup for my business.
I hope they will sell it in EU. I would buy that truck right away.
If this comes to the UK and it’s the same “value” proposition…..I’ll get one. I love the colour too
Great and clear review. Kind of feels like a motorweek review. This looks to be shot in gold canyon or the las sendas area cool its local
Gold Canyon
For a delivery and work truck it’s good enough. Good basic car for a senior citizen & Also good as a first car for young driver. Priced lower than teslas hatchback 🚗 that’s supposed to be $25k sometime in the future.
Really it's what 90% of homeowners need.
I love your videos when you drive around town. Phoenix, and its many saguaros, is really beautiful! 🌵
I'm going to need a hat like yours when I doing my Mav vids 👍👍
i ordered same truck just added CP360 and trailer hitch its an amazing vehicle especially at the price
I have a Honda Insight hybrid and while I love it around town, it's absolutely frightening to drive anywhere uphill. Driving to Payson I'm lucky to get up to 60 mph. How is the maverick pickup for Driving up mountains? Have you taken a road trip yet?
Put the medal to the floor
Thank you for the video. I've been curious about this line since it came out.
Can you tell me where they're built?
Hermosillo, Mexico
I agree with you on everything in this review except about the infotainment system. I think it is appropriate for the price you are paying; otherwise great review.
His exact words were, "It's ok for a base cheap vehicle..." and he made the point that it is surprising that it remains the radio that you get all the way up to the top models.
In the times we live in with everything more expensive, Ford is going to sell A LOT of these!!!
I heard if you get the optional Ford Co-Pilot360 $650 package it comes with power mirrors on the base model XL since the mirrors are different for BLIS.
Correct
Great review Sam... to me my only wish is that the radio was better.. I see most people doesn't like it on the reviews.. Some say it's fine... for the price.... I hope Ford has a fix for the " glitches " in the radio with upgrades later..
The upgrades are already available, just need to apply them
I haven't had problems. It works and sounds great after resetting the sound balance and moving the bass up a bit. Android auto means Sync 3 doesn't matter anyway.
Just curious if the radio phone interaction issues are related to your phone being Motorola and if things are better with a Samsung or iPhone.
We use the same phone with all cars, not the same issues there. The issues reported in this video are common ones many owners have been reporting. There is no getting around the fact this is a junk system.
@@TestDrivenTV Gotcha. Thanks for the reply.
great vid man thanks what are the differcens with the XLT can i still get a sliding rear window at the back on a XL?
