The Psychology of Dehumanization

  • People have an amazing capacity to see their fellow human beings as...not human. Psychologists have studied this both in its blatant and more subtle forms. What does it mean to dehumanize? How can researchers capture everyday dehumanization? Is it just prejudice? What does it say about how we think about non-human animals?

    We often forget that in cases where a human does commit an atrocity, our instinct is to immediately become angry, and develop this sense of want for justice, which becomes an unrelenting desire for vengeance that causes us to dehumanize the people who have committed an atrocity.
    Sometimes we get so caught up in the heat of the moment, we fail to realize that we're no better than them.

    The belief in human superiority over animals and the connection to the possibility of social superiority is on a spectrum; for those who do atrocities, they are known to cite insects. The weaponized response of language vis a vis the insect metamorphoses opens the door to acts such as gassing and incinerating as acceptable solutions.

      Well, if you have a trolley problem, between a kitten, and a baby, which would you save? I think the reason people make that distinction also has to do with most religions claiming that humans are "crafted in god's image", or "the highest form of life". We are biased to see ourselves as more important in this bleak universe, to create a sense of comfort.

    I'm Polish, so dehumanization is not a new process to me. Obviously it was the main reason why Holocaust took place, as Germans intentionally compared Jews in the media to pests, etc. Actually they were called "life not worth living" in Nazi policies, while Poles were "only" Untermenshen. I think lot of their propaganda spanned from older dehumanization of both ethnical groups in broader European culture and nowadays as Jews successfully addressed the problem and convinced western world they are in fact very human, nothing like that happened for Poles. I was absolutely stunned by the amount of prejudice, hate and perceived dehumanization of Polish people in the UK while living there, but I'm also pretty sure it's the same for the rest of Europe. Tbh I'm a bit anxious for this reason, because our country is habitually discriminated internationally and in case of a military conflict this would be a great excuse to betray and abandon us again. On the other hand the power of German and Russian malignant propaganda is so overwhelming, that nowadays many Poles perceive many other groups in Poland as inhumane. Dehumanization was the core concept of mass brainwashing for the past centuries in Poland, as both Germans and Russians were very keen on it. It is still openly used by Russian propaganda though.

    What does come before? Dehumanisation or cognitive dissonance? I mean, is dehumanisation a product of cognitive dissonance, or a completely separate phenomenon?

    • @wokeil
      @wokeil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting question. Personally I think they are certainly connected but there might be other factors that eventually make the dehumanization so blatant. Something like a collective cognitive dissonance which could be seen in a societys treatment of immigrants or animals for example might be a part of it. Cognitive dissonance is also a much broader concept.

    • @hyphen8d725
      @hyphen8d725 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dehumanization leads to cognitive dissonance, as if some people are less human than others, why is that? When you can apply those same reasons to yourself or others in your "superior group", it leads to a contradiction. Alternatively, Cognitive dissonance can lead to dehumanization, as if you try to justify an unjustifiable act from your group onto another group, you might cling to dehumanization as a way to resolve that cognitive dissonance.

    in fact "human" as a qualifier is TOTALLY inappropriate in the use that almost the entire "human" species makes of it: the origin of human is humus, peat, earth, soil .

    If human zoos are "not around anymore" then how do you explain New Orland's? Or NYC? Miami, Chicago, Seattle, San Fransisco? Think I'm just being racist? You're only half right, but i'm trying to point out that while growing up in the 90s, I literally repeatedly heard these metropolis areas referred to on TV as "human zoos." While they supposedly had different connotations, still seems like it was likely rooted in some lingering dehumanization in the zeitgeist of the time. The phrase more evolved is troublesome for me for one, it suggests that evolution is always improving and humans are the pinicle and somehow supierior in everyway which is obviously false. 🤔 .We need to accept that humans can be horrible to our fellow man for lots of reasons and dehumanising helps get over that dilemma of do unto others.
