    It's good to see some knowledgeable people letting out some info behind the scenes. It seems that the newer technology is being hidden from the public. To let some people know: DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter, which captures the soot (unburned fuel), untill senseors on both ends of the DPF sense a pressure drop due to filter being full. Regeneration Mode occurs, restricting air intake and injecting extra fuel into exhaust ahead of DPF and heating DPF to a point that turns the soot into ash. The ash remains in DPF until DPF has to be cleaned or replaced. To clean DPF, it must be removed, cut open, ash cleaned out and DPF rewelded back together. DEF on the other hand is for Diesel Exhaust Fluid, which is Urea (a solution containing a larege amount of nitrogen) that is sprayed into the exhaust system after the DPF to react with nitrogen oxides,( which react cause smog), to reduce nitrgen oxides. the black smoke coming out of a diesel engine is soot (a pollutant according to the EPA). So you storing soot to later reburn and convert to ash. Supposedly to make the air cleaner. But you consume more fuel to make the air cleaner.

      Absolutely 100%!!!Wasting fuel just for an unnecessary clean out.Being that we use low sulphur fuel now

    I am a Detroit diesel tech, read some of the comments its obvious most of you don't know how these systems work. first exhaust goes into a DOC diesel oxidation catalyst burns off un-burnt fuel ( remember the old diesels that made your eyes burn at idle?) next is DPF soot is not un-burnt fuel but it is a particulate mostly carbon ( the C in C02 ) particulates are captured and stored until a regen is performed which burns off particulates into ash which is stored until the dpf is full. ( once dpf ash content is 100% they are removed and cleaned) next is SCR Selective Catalyst Reduction in which urea ( ammonia ) is added when scr temp is above 478 deg f . the NoX ( nitrous oxides ) nitrogen bonds are broken at this temp and the nitrogen in the urea can combine with the the NoX turning it into nitrogen (78% of the air you breathe) water and CO2. expressed as 4NO + 2(NH2)2 CO + O2 → 4N2 + 4H2O + 2CO2 but much lower levels of co2.
    a diesel engines #1 emission is NoX , diesel engines today put out 75- 90% less NoX ppm per BHP/hr than just 10 years ago. And I don't know about the light diesels but heavy trucks are getting same or better mileage then 10 yrs ago. 8 mpg is the average I see that's 80,000 gvw, a lot more than a pick up truck.

      red66chevy with the introduction of scr and def, why do the still have dpf? Why dont they increased combustion temps in order to take care of the particulate matter and then up the scr to deal with the higher nox levels?

    Very knowledgeable video. I recently purchased a 2016 F350 diesel and I'm not sure how to force the manual regen, I assumed if it was full of DEF it was doing it automatically but I guess I was wrong. What do I click on the truck to get it to manual regeneration. When I click the button it doesn't seem to rev the engine like in your video. Does it take a few minutes to kick in? Also- should the exhaust icon always be lit up on the dash when driving or only when forcing a region?
    Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    It seems to me to idle the diesel at elevated RPM is a larger waste of fuel and emission than a straight exhaust would amount to.
    Damn government is always after a dollar somewhere, not always for the better.

      +WildTurkey Rye I could not agree more. I actually wanted one of the Ford diesels but I am now leaning towards the 6.2 gas. Too much emissions crap on the newer diesels, even going back a few years.
      I realize the 6.2 is not going to tow as well but it is still a very capable vehicle for my needs.

    • @jesses1589
      @jesses1589 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Basically they are burning more fuel to "save" on emissions. If you want to save on emissions simply use a straight exhaust and burn overall less fuel.

    • @jamieofalltrades536
      @jamieofalltrades536 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely uses more fuel, it also wears out your engine twice as fast as it should, not to mention the aggravating regeneration cycle that always occurs just before you pull into your driveway, or the never-ending purchases of exhaust fluid...

  • @dianaburghduf1603
    @dianaburghduf1603 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    To get it to run clean, we need to burn ALOT more fuel. Sounds like the people who sell fuel get to set the standards how emissions are "cleaned up". Stranded in a 50-60 K truck for DPF faults would have me looking for an LBZ DMax in the used lot to buy.

  • @markkeyser
    @markkeyser 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Unless I'm mistaken there was an option that could be purchased when ordering a 6.7 that would allow an owner to perform a manual regeneration on their own. (I believe that cab and chassis models have that capability as well.) I've got a 2014 Lariat that does not allow me to do the regen on my own. The question is this: can the truck be reflashed to allow for manual regen?

    Maybe if they used a separate injector into the pipe instead of opening the valves in the pistons to pass the burning diesel it would be more reliable. Heck, you could turn it into an after burning pipe for thrust!

      FordTechMakuloco the 7th/9th injector strategy is used in alot of the heavier equipment and vehicles. It is much better for the engine since you're not exposing the engine block, heads, egr cooler, and turbo to extremely high exhaust temps (blast furnace anyone?). Why ford and international decided to use the 7 and 8 injectors for dpf regeneration is beyond me.

    1st I would be pretty pissed if an emissions sensor stuck me in Idle-only mode! Life is hard enough without Hal9000 tripping you down the stairs. 2nd Is the whole purpose just to heat up the DPF and burn this off like a self cleaning oven?

    Hi, I'm stuck in idle only mode with P20E8. I had injection pump and def injector replaced. First time I tried DPF regeneration I had to add fuel. Put 5 gallons in(20% level indicated). The next time went through whole process but it still stayed in idle mode. The next two times tried I would get "DPF regeneration timeout" and it ended the procedure. Is it not possible to run procedure in succession? Also is there a software program update for this system? 2014 F-350 6.7 only 23k miles. Thanks Dave

    I have a 7.3 PSD f350 and was looking to buy a new 6.7, but the EPA exhaust and emissions is way more unreliable than the older trucks ... talking to the dealership, I ask them about reliability and they evade that question with the 6.7.
    I want to buy a new F350, but the 2 dealerships cannot tell me I could get 100,000 miles without a major repair. Sadly the EPA appears to be killing the diesel light truck market.
    Nice truck, just not too excited about a 7,000 dollar exhaust repair or 5,000 dollar turbo repair.

      Depending on where you live in the U.S. you can delete the aftertreatment and run a programmer to fool the computer that the emission stuff is on the truck. Here in Texas they do a safety inspection and no emission test. but they do a visual check to see if I still have the emission crap on it. but i ran a bypass tube around the dpf doc so they don't know if its been deleted. the 6.7 are good engines if you delete the crap. these new engine will not last long due to that all this emission crap is on it which pretty much kills the power and engine performance. like the Exhaust Gas Recirculation or (EGR) it cycles burned exhaust soot back into the intake to get reburned which cause injector failure and loss of power. I took my truck to Bill from powerstrokehelp.com and told him to dealerproof the crap out of it. which he rebuild my engine with better gaskets and parts which his work is lifetime warranty. I didn't do the dealership warranty which i just use the money from there and put it in the dealerproof setup.

    I understand that the 6.4 Liter injected fuel into number 7&8 cylinders on the exhaust stroke to perform Regeneration of the DPF, with all the extra heat passing through the turbo. My question is does the 6.7 do the same thing or has Ford improved on the process. If so how does the 6.7 inject the fuel?

    • @isaachousley325
      @isaachousley325 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Raymond Louks it is still injected into the cylinder on the exhaust steoke, subjecting the engine block, heads, egr cooler, and turbo to essentially a blast furnace. The only reason that the 6.7 has been more reliable (if you can even call diesels made after 2007 reliable) is because the dpf doesn't regen as often thanks to the scr and def.

      engines may exhibit a runs rough condition only during the exhaust regeneration
      process. The condition typically occurs when the vehicle is idled for prolonged
      periods or frequently driven for short periods. This occurs because the drive

    Just curious but are the new Ram 2500/3500's with the Cummins having this same problem? I just ordered a 2015 F350 Monday. I am wondering if I should have ordered the Ram instead. Paying $65k for a truck and having these problems or being stranded is just ridiculous.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are as these are the first years using def on the Rams. They will fix it soon I am sure. Likely a new sensor and updated calibration but engineering need time to figure out why it is failing and then go from there with a revised sensor.

    FordTechMakuloco I have a 2012 F250 and want to do EGR, DPF, and DEF deletes and tune. I've read many blogs saying its the best thing you could do to our truck. What is your Professional opinion? Should I delete?

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as you have the new Tune to go along with it I think it is a great idea should free up lots of power and mpg's too. It is illegal but it will sure help and the truck will be ok as that is all just emissions devices.

    So, the few vehicles we have at work that don't take the DEF, basically store the pollutants and then during a regen., blow all of the latent pollution out of the pipe. how in the fuck does that make any sense? or did I get it wrong? And in the Fords we have at work, that means, when the engine isn't blown and being replaced, or the turbo isn't blown either. again. The Maxx force internationals we have at work, the parkd regeneration doesn't do a thing. i ran it through a cycle and when it was done, it said dpf needs a regeneration. what kind of stupid vehicle is this? It had to be opened up on the highway to clear it. i wasn't even close to the highway and the dpf was almost full. pain in the ass just to store up all of the pollutants to have them all blown out of the tailpipe at once. stupid government.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +bababooey7576 No the DPF collect the soot and particulate matter and then during regeneration they burn up at very high temps to turn them into harmless ash.

    • @bababooey7576
      @bababooey7576 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FordTechMakuloco Maybe the guy on the trucking show was incorrect. I thought I'd heard ages ago too, that it was just ash, this guy on the show was saying how it is such a scam, it is just latent pollution etc., I haven't totally delved into the make up of what actually comes out of the tailpipe. Just been learning how the systems work etc., and the many issues the engines are having as a result of these systems.

    • @HillbillyRednecking
      @HillbillyRednecking 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you need to check out exactly what the catalytic converter does, the diesel particulate filter and what the selective catalyst reduction filter does

    • @bababooey7576
      @bababooey7576 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Pikulski I might have been fresh off watching some trucking show, where the host basically said something to that effect about latent pollution etc. the tail pipes aren't all sooty like before. I am aware of what the filters and such are for, it is just the frustration of the government's regulations and a new(ish) technology and working the bugs out. The emissions equipment seems to be the biggest source of headaches, atleast at work anyhow...and from what I've seen on here...it is a known thing at work with the maxx force trucks that the 'park'd regen' does absolutely nothing. It is always a highway deal

    • @HillbillyRednecking
      @HillbillyRednecking 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bababooey7576 What I'm saying is do you know what the emissions equipment does on a chemistry level. The tier 4 emission standards are a pain in the ass and it helps if your in a state that doesn't scrutinize trucks with all emission equipment removed. Re-gen processes are soooo hard on the engine and equipment it's a sin you pay 60k for something that self destructs.

    As usual, FORD is letting the customer beta test their engineering. Just got a notice of a "Customer Satisfaction Program 13B17" on my Escape. I think I'll wait until I get the recall notice for the power steering failures and have both fixed at the same time.
    It always takes three trips to the dealership to get anything fixed anyway. The first trip is to verify the complaint and order the part. The second trip is to have the part installed and the third trip is to have the previous repair fixed. Then they send the customer satisfaction survey so you can tell them what a wonderful job they did.
    Sadly, Ford isn't the worst.

    I have a 2013 F-350 ... pretty much same as in this video. Nothing fancy on the dash panel. Aside from the communist emission BS, the dash panel won't even tell you the oil life percentage or def level. It will just say oil life OK, DEF level OK, etc. I swear to God the engineers who designed this setup were Nazis with control issues. Damnit I wanna know how much oil life is left before the annoying change oil now demand pops up. Or how much def is in the damn tank. Maybe it should just display all the commands in German or have a Hitler voice prompt scream at you over the speakers "Za oil is FINE!"
