That Victron smart sense battery monitor is great. I use in RV installs .stick right on battery. 1 user has AGM battery and that used for tempter compensation needed for lead type in cold. even dessert camping can drop below 32F at night. with insulating battery compartment that sensor shows how well insulation work. I have a RV'er that recorded - 28F upper west camping. Oregon . battery stayed around 40F . you can use that temp. sensor to trigger a relay to turn on a battery heater . so much you can do. and all threw Bluetooth app. RV people love that .
I am happy with it , and it's just another set of eyes on the system. Of course cold is not really a thing here, but for those in cold climate, it's more of a benefit i think. Thinking of adding some more blue...it's addicting! Aloha!🤙
I seem to recall that the Smart Shunt's aux input can be connected to a temperature sensor (usually it is used for mid-point voltage monitoring for 2S series connected batteries, or not used at all). hmm... yes, my SmartShunt does have the option for an external temp sensor, though I've never used it.
In terms of low-temperature operation. Generally speaking you can't charge below freezing without damaging the battery, but you CAN discharge below freezing... down to -20C (-4F) or so.
I use the Victron Temp sensor that plugs into the Victron Smart Shunt and it adds the battery temp to the system info. Funny thing is that the temp sensor is $31. Overpriced in my opinion, but it's blue. That battery sensor is a good alternative if needed. Can't have enough safety systems. Aloha. Keep em coming.

I have a lifep04 system with one of these, I have staged my charging with it to kick on a 50w panel at 3⁰c and 1.2KW at 5⁰c. Works great as my 5KWH battery bank that doesn't have low temperature cut off. Over the winter my system drops down below freezing form time to time.
Also I use one of these on a separate lead acid system as it can alter the voltage according to the temperature for optimum charging. Works great.
The amount of data logging on this device is great as you can go back and see the voltage and temperature you had at any given time.
I've been using these for my Lifepo4s in the desert, cold temp protection on the cheap when linked with the smart solars. I even bought one for my lead acid bank to monitor voltage remotely. I have one temp sense on a 4 battery 24v 2s2p system so it comes down to $10 per battery for low temp protection, even less if I add more lifepo4s.
Been using one of four one year in my RV and couldn't be happier with how it works, going camping and knowing my batteries won't charge while freezing from solar is a great piece of mine to have if you don't have temperature cut off!

Great video! I have one monitoring my 48v lifepo4 batteries. Guess only limitation is range, as they are Bluetooth.
The monitor is a good product. I have one on a less used vehicle out in the driveway. It has enough range I can usually read the battery status from anywhere in the back part of the house. I just wish they were cheaper...
It does have decent range, and I am glad to have it part of the entire system actually. Everything at a glance...peace of mind. Aloha!🤙

Nice toy, but nicer would be a changeover that let a cold battery divert first solar into a heater pad so that all solar has use. Solar heats the battery til it's warm enough to charge properly.
Hello there a heads up I had that installed on my blue wall but had issues one winter. It made system not to charge it told on the victron network that it was -10c outside witch it wasn't it was about 3c outside took a while to sort it out. It happened twice so I no longer use that battery monitor

Shunt sensor is better as. It can tie into the VRM via the BMV. I have Bluetooth and it's nice but does not allow you to connect to the mmpts or. Shunt through the Bluetooth temp sensor. As they are networked. But not.

Will the smart sense work with just the smart solar charge controller?
If I hook this victron smart sense battery monitor to a non-smart battery, how much would i be able to do with it? Just use it as a basic monitor? Will it show temperature and cell levels ?
Aloha kakahiaka! So, if I understand correctly.. The smart battery sense only works with other victron devices? My batteries don't have low temp cutoff, but here in Florida we haven't had frost in several years.. But in order to use this feature, I would need a victron charge controller.. It would cut off charging power if the temperature was too low?

Yes, you need a victron smart solar controller, not the blue solar version it won't connect..
So with just the smart sense and smart solar charge controller, they will network and it will turn off the charge controller at the preset temperature? Don't need all the other fancy equipment shown in the video for it to work like the bluetooth dongle?
