  • This vase was made to support Mindy Lowham my longest standing employee, who recently lost her husband Jim to covid.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. And every penny earned is donated to Operation Underground Railroad at OURRESCUE.ORG.
Here are my commonly used tools/equipment if you'd like to try them out....
    - Lathe: (amzn.to/3orYsOy) this lathe is freaking amazing, very well built, solid, strong, variable speed, 110 or 220 volt. I couldn't have designed it better.
    - Lathe tools: (amzn.to/3agd3ay) carbide tip, (amzn.to/3t5iMsA) great beginner set
    - File Sander: (amzn.to/36o3hlE), this is the cheapest and highest quality I've found. Fantastic for those hard to get to sanding projects.
    - Angle Grinder: (amzn.to/36lgewG), one of my most indispensable tools, (amzn.to/3iXtNHW) the flat head helps get into tight spaces, carving and sanding disks are a life saver.
    - Grinder Carving Disk: (amzn.to/39oWqKG), this is a really great disk for roughing out medium sized projects
    - Grinder Sanding Disks: (amzn.to/3cj91Rv), fantastic for sanding and minor-moderate shaping stages
    - Round Sanding System: (amzn.to/3r11N8Q) sleeves go around an inflatable ball (amzn.to/2KVCUvW )or make your own foam ball, attaches to a drill, great for tight corners.
    - Palm Sander: (amzn.to/3r1mJg8), the most important sanding tool, used on almost every job. I like the size of the sand paper for both this and on the lathe by hand.
    - Chain Saw: (amzn.to/2MbWNj2), has worked well for years, I also bought this electric one (amzn.to/3qZOqpp) for the quieter in the garage projects
    - Oscillating Tool: (amzn.to/3puK4q1) great for cutting and sanding sharp corners and tight spots.
    - Super Glue: (amzn.to/3pFg5vT) thin and runny, perfect for stabilizing bark or other unstable wood.
    - Resin: (amzn.to/3t7WSVo), one of the cheaper but higher quality, does it all resins. Great results.
    - Pigments: amzn.to/3sYC5ng, great quality for resin
    - Pressure Pot: (amzn.to/3tfp1u2) 5 gallon for the big resin projects to get rid of bubbles, or (amzn.to/3pwX0M8) for the smaller average jobs 2.5 gallon, both need minor modifications to work.
    - Protection: (amzn.to/39t3lm0), best face shield yet for carving and lathe work

Was a former foot and ankle guy myself and got into wood work several years ago...and that's one of the only things that soothes my head and makes me calmer...like you, I work and work on a piece until that moment when that FIRST Coat of stain or sealer or shellac goes on...then the entire process is well worth it!!! Beautiful, Sir and for a good cause! Aloha

I really appreciate the 2 why’s that you do this wood turning. We can all use something for relaxation. And the kid thing is so important. Whoever would do that is the lowest form of creation, not even human.
I can get a little wound up sometime. My kids were killed in a car/ truck wreck 1979. Dixie was 4.5 years Jim was 22 months lucky for them, they’re guaranteed.

Do you have a moisture separator fitted in your compressed airline before the pressure pot? Compressors can provide a lot of moisture.

Love this vase. So pretty and unusual. When rotozip first came out, years ago, I got m husband one for Christmas. He thought it was dumb until he started using it. He did kitchen remodeling and used it when applying laminate to cabinet fronts and trimming laminate on countertops. Wore out two or three of them. Very versatile tool.

Yes the moisture turns the resin cloudy. Happened to me too. I'm a novice also. Been turning for about 5 month's and love it. My friend who taught me the basics can't believe the pieces I've created in such a short time.
    Anyway, awesome vase!

a small thing if I may: I get that you like turning green wod however before you get the final shape and add the resin it would probably be a god idea to dry it fully and also either use CA glue or resin for those cracks as it's very likely they will continue to migrate over time as the wood dries more

On the next project like this get a router you can set depth on and route the depth of where the epoxy will go into. Don't take out the center yet. That way you can keep it all together better and not have to fill in the center with bags a pray it don't leak lol. Love the project and totally gunna steal the idea... just fyi haha. Also when working with resin make sure the wood is completely dry or it can introduce air bubbles. For this I would have routed out the area then wrapped the vines in it while they were wet and pliable then set it all aside to dry. Easier to form the vines and allow moisture to dry out for the resin. The moisture from the first pour is rising to the top saturating the wood from the heat generated. That's my guess of the foggy 2nd pour.

The cloudiness is most likely from moisture, as you said. I will put my pieces in the oven at 175-225 degrees prior to doing the second pour to drive out the moisture. This would have possibly been an issue in your particular case, as those temps would most likely damage your plastic bag “filler” piece in the center. You could try using a blow dryer to just dry the top area where you are pouring. The heat from a blow dryer shouldn’t produce enough heat, or would at least be controllable enough, not to damage the plastic filler. Also, make sure moisture isn’t coming in to your pressure pot with the compressed air supply. I was having issues even after I warmed my pieces in the oven until I discovered that my inline water trap on my air supply line was junk! Good luck and keep up the great work!!

The vac at end may be misting micro air froth from in the wood as it cannot escape like the previous pour with air gap. Aquariums use wood diffuser blocks for that. Use a jiggle/vibrating table to settle bubbles out of resin and pour second half at atmosphere maybe?

Dan your approach is inspirational. I like that you include things that didn't work so well, and that you verbalize your thought process in very casual and understandable style. There will be plenty of folks like me offering advice on what you should or shouldn't do. But one of your greatest strengths is your fresh and unbridled creativity, unbound by traditions and self imposed limitations. I laugh sometimes to think I had a shop teacher many years ago state that you should never put a screwdriver tip in a drill. That said, it would seem that moisture is the culprit behind the clouds in your resin. Do you have a moisture tester for wood? It's a good tool to have in your arsenal. Much success to you in all your endeavors. I look forward to your next video, and to where your imagination will carry us all. Thank you so much.

Your work is magnificent! You turn wood to unwind -- I watch woodturning videos to unwind. How many hours or days of craftsmanship does one video represent?

Thank you Linda! It depends on the project. Wood only projects might take 3-4 hours, wood and resin twice that. I pick at them a little whenever i have an hour here and there...

I actually think the pine ended up having a really nice look to it and as far as the white section it does look like it was exposed to moisture I've seen alot of other people cleaning the surface with denatured alcohol before adding the second pour so that may help. Beautiful work for a very worthy cause.

Beautiful piece. I know nothing about epoxy but you may want to get a vibrator of some kind to free up the air bubbles.

The heat being generated from you first pour messed with the bonding of your second.
Whenever you pour resin, you'll want to use the correct amount all in one pour. Otherwise, you'll want to heat the top of your first pour to pop any bubbles that'll form on top and allow the first pour harden entirely. Then, sand the surface to ensure the second will bond without the clouds. The resin will hide the scratches so it doesn't have to be smooth.

Use 6 mil plastic (thick and slick) Epoxy won’t stick to it, for your forms. Wrap tape around it for near zero clearance

I dont know how to help with keeping the resin in on the outside other than what you did but if you had rough turned the outside then used a router very carefully to route out your spiral or a rotary carver like a dremmel or some such before you hollowed out the inside then you wouldnt have to worry about that part at least. if I recall thats close to what you did for your Autumn Windows bowl.

I Like this piece! I'd love to tell you the answer about the frosty resin, but the only thing I can think of is more air bubbles perfusing the resin, maybe because the earlier mass has cooled significantly?
Also, Jim Sprague (Sprague Woodturning, TH-cam) uses expired rice inside a plastic bag, as resin savers, inside his molds, so that if there are any leaks, he can still turn it.

Yes. Really dry wood plus the total boat fathom resin plus a vacuum chamber followed by a pressure pot gets it crystal clear ...

I am curious if you can contact a company that does silicone mats or flexible fabric? Im thinking you could potentially use them over and over. Hot glue would also peel right off. Saran wrap? Anyway, i like your channel and it seems like you are a stellar human too!

Hey, Dan another great one! As I watch your video’s I get ideas and stop and make a comment! What about a balloon instead of a bag? Would the chemicals in the resin deteriorate the balloon before it set-up?

The resin issue could be that the resin is already setting when you make the second pour. Either allow it to set all the way or do it in one pour.
