Woodturning floating triangles with bowties - extreme open segmented bowl

- Woodturning floating triangles with bowties resulting in an open segmented bowl. This video looks at how to turn open segmented bowls using scrap wood and yet look woodturned from a single piece of wood.
Okay, so the title is provocative and there are restrictions and caveats, but the point here is that you do not need a large lump of wood or a bowl blank to make a bowl look as though it has been woodturned from a single piece. Herein I use scraps from a customer project to turn an open bowl concept using bow ties as interconnecting pieces.
It should be possible to follow this method with scraps of wood or small pieces of exotic wood that are not normally found as large blocks. Plus it gives you control over the geometry of the pieces, where you no longer have to use quadrilateral wedges, but can have more exotic shapes.
A lot of attention is required to ensure the grain runs in the same direction and matches as closely as possible, which I didn't do with this project. I went through 10+ attempts in trying to figure out the cutting angles for the initial triangle pieces and was simply happy to turn this piece without it disintegrating on the lathe.

Challenge of the Day: How extreme could an open segmented bowl be made using this or similar approach? I was thinking of making the base wider, more smaller shapes & bow ties and perhaps a couple of layers.
I think the smaller shapes could only be made from the burl. Regular wood, with year rings, would not give you enough strength. Even at this size, you got a wood chip, and surprisingly only one chip.
@@clockmakerify Hi Valery. I agree and wish I could get a lot of big sized burls to play with! The alternatives I thought could also work was to orientate the grain circumferentially, or to keep axially but place sacrificial wood in the channels, may also work.
@@RayWhitbyCreations Good luck with your incredibly beautiful art. I agree with you that the second option is theoretically possible, but practice can give you so many surprises.
I came up with an idea. Make a locking vase out of birch, redwood, ebony... turn it into a unique flowing shape. Sand and polish. Then pour clear epoxy resin around it but inside the resin put gold flakes off of eBay. It’s thin stuff so you have to be careful stirring it into the epoxy. Then re-turn the piece again...sand and polish. That would be cool!
Is there a clear material strong enough to hold the pieces together while it's being cut to take the place of the bowties so it looks like the segments are floating
This is one of the best and most unique examples of sectional design I have seen in years, beautiful job! Bruce/🇨🇦
Thanks Bruce, your feedback is greatly appreciated. I'm fascinated by what it took to develop this design, the iterations it took to finally figuring out what might work. That it held together on the lathe was a surprise too! All the best. Ray
This piece has a simplistic beauty to it that almost ignores all of the work you put into it. For me I think it’s absolutely beautiful.
Thank you kindly! I'm just so happy it held together when hollowing out! Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best. Ray
As creative and well executed as any turned segmented piece I've seen. Very artistic. Well done.
Thanks Curtis. I appreciate your feedback! Take care. Ray
So cool. An example of how creating the block of wood is more difficult than the turning
Very true Greg! Still surprised it stayed together on the lathe. All the best. Ray
YOU ARE FROM ANOTHER PLANET !!!! BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you my friend. Really appreciate your feedback! Take care. Ray
That’s an amazing piece. Thank you for your time to show us how you can make such awesome videos
Thanks Partrick. I appreciate your feedback! All the best. Ray
I love watching your process and use of elaborate jigs. Brilliant!
Thank you very much! I appreciate your feedback! An upcoming video will be using 3 jigs and well over 100 butterfly joints. Totally insane project, which i hope you'll enjoy too. All the best. Ray
That’s very impressive, Ray! My head hurts just thinking of coming up with and cutting all of those angles. On top of that it’s just beautiful. 👍🏻
Thanks Mike! It did became more of a sculpting project and probably could be simplified. Ibuprofen does help too. All the best. Ray
Well, that's the biggest understatement posted here!
WOW! That was an absolute masterclass! So beautiful. Elegant. Stunning. Well done.
Thanks Anand. Your enouragement is greatly appreciated. Take care. Ray

Cheers Rob. Thanks for the watching and commenting. Be warned, this project might cause accelerated greying! I just couldn't see how to do it till the 10th prototype. Hopefully you'll get it first time! All the best. Ray
...Mesmerizing and quite stunning...you sir are the "wood-whisperer"...
Now that is one very handsome piece of Art! Very well done. 👍🏻
Thank you so much Ferro 😀
I watched a few of your films. They all have a common denominator: they present works that are very time-consuming and very interesting. And that's what makes these movies so attractive. Congratulations
Thanks so much Andrzej, really appreciate your feedback and encouragement! All the best. Ray
Gorgeous. And I also really appreciate the detailed information you provide in the captions!

Thanks for your feedback Shashank! All the best. Ray
This is certainly a challenge. It's probably the most unique use of bowties I've ever seen. It's definitely interesting.
Thanks so much for your feedback. It took around 10 prototypes before I could get the final configuration. Certainly required a little OCD to get it done. Take care. Ray
I love this design. I’m kinda envious of the ability to think of and then execute things like this.
It took a long time to figure out how to do it. I had made a lot of sketches of different configurations and still surprised how well it held together when turning! Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best. Ray
Turned out very nice.
Thanks Randy. Much appreciated. All the best. Ray
Very well done. Amazing planning to end up with the shape
Thanks for watching and your feedback Mario! It was challening my brain sufficiently, perhaps a little serendipitous? But fun. All the best. Ray

Math, knowhow and skill all have to converge to make something this complex and beautiful. Excellent job.
Thanks Connie! I'm surprised that it worked out so well and held together on the lathe! Appreciate your feedback. All the best. Ray
Awesome. If I saw that sitting on a shelf I would have never guessed that it was turned on a lathe. I would have thought it was put together like a puzzle. Awesome job.
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I do wonder if someone can machine the pieces on a 5-axis CNC router and then fit together as a jigsaw puzzle. Take care. Ray
Now THAT is creative ! Beautiful piece of work.
Thanks Jason. It took quite a few attempts to figure out the parameters and i'm still surprised the thing held together on the lathe! All the best. Ray
So beautiful and creative. Truly you are an artist!

🤯 The maths! The geometry! 😳 Beautiful work and an equally beautifully edited video. Thank you. 🙏😊
Thank you so much for the encouragement! The double helix video had a lot more maths and geometry in it and I had to invent a jig to make a new type of woodworking cut, but I am really happy with this project. All the best. Ray
Wow! Watching you work is really captivating. The end result is spectacular! Very nicely done!
Thanks Matthew! I am really pleased with this piece and it was the most challenging to date. But it also has generated a lot of other spin-off ideas that will be taxing. Projects for a later date. All the best. Ray

Much appreciated James! Take care. Ray
So many careful, well-thought-out cuts and angles. I started to think my brain didn't work on enough dimensions to understand where you were going. Then the final piece worked in such a satisfying way. Awesome.
Thanks Dave. It was a project of many attempts till I got it to a point where I could turn it and even then I was expecting this thing to fly off the lathe at any moment. those bow ties worked a treat! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. All the best. Ray
Very clever!
Thanks Wendy. Appreciate your feedback!
Very nice, good job

Yo this feels like if Bob Ross took wood shop instead of art class in high school
If only I had his hair! Now wondering if I can create something more akin to Salvador Dali's repertoire. All the best. Ray
As a person who enjoys every form of art I totally understand what you're saying.. I mostly just drawn paint but I want to learn pottery, how to sculpt, woodturning, and resin tying it all together... But I believe you have the skills to do it all as well, because I saw how meticulous and the quality of detail you wanted to put into your piece.
I can’t even comprehend how you come up with something like this!!!!
It was a series of idle sketches fueled by coffee and donuts! Thanks for watching. All the best. Ray
@@RayWhitbyCreations well... whatever works for you. It’s awesome!!

Really artistic piece. I find ash to be a chippy kind of wood so it is impressive that you were able to build, lathe and sand without major mishaps.
Great job!
