"The Amazon" Wood and resin turning. Have you ever watched a nature show about the piranha swimming around submerged tree roots in the Amazon? This is what I'm seeing. :)
Clear resin, apple wood and lilac twigs turned into a vase on the lathe.

My goal is to pair my love for medicine/surgery, video, photography, art and wood projects with my campaign to raise awareness for Operation Underground Railroad (OURRESCUE.ORG), an amazing group fighting child sex trafficking around the world. I dabble in wood turning on the lathe, carving, painting with acrylics using pendulum and pouring techniques as well as different video projects with time lapse and other things I find interesting.

Here are my commonly used tools/equipment if you'd like to try them out....even if you can't find what you need, any purchases in Amazon using these links helps us raise money.
    - Lathe: (amzn.to/3orYsOy) this Laguna lathe is freaking amazing, very well built, solid, strong, variable speed, 110 or 220 volt. I couldn't have designed it better. This Wen lathe was my first trusty starter lathe, great place to start this hobby: amzn.to/3aqIIGH
    - Lathe tools: (amzn.to/3agd3ay) carbide tip, (amzn.to/3t5iMsA) great beginner set
    - File Sander: (amzn.to/36o3hlE), this is the cheapest and highest quality I've found. Fantastic for those hard to get to sanding projects.
    - Carving tool: (amzn.to/2MjTd6x), Rotozips are awesome, a little too powerful for small detail but great for roughing out the medium sized projects.
    - Angle Grinder: (amzn.to/36lgewG), one of my most indispensable tools, (amzn.to/3iXtNHW) the flat head helps get into tight spaces, carving and sanding disks are a life saver.
    - Grinder Carving Disk: (amzn.to/39oWqKG), this is a really great disk for roughing out medium sized projects
    - Grinder Sanding Disks: (amzn.to/3cj91Rv), fantastic for sanding and minor-moderate shaping stages
    - Round Sanding System: (amzn.to/3r11N8Q) sleeves go around an inflatable ball (amzn.to/2KVCUvW )or make your own foam ball, attaches to a drill, great for tight corners.
    - Palm Sander: (amzn.to/3r1mJg8), the most important sanding tool, used on almost every job. I like the size of the sand paper for both this and on the lathe by hand.
    - Chain Saw: (amzn.to/2MbWNj2), has worked well for years, I also bought this electric one (amzn.to/3qZOqpp) for the quieter in the garage projects
    - Oscillating Tool: (amzn.to/3puK4q1) great for cutting and sanding sharp corners and tight spots.
    - Super Glue: (amzn.to/3pFg5vT) thin and runny, perfect for stabilizing bark or other unstable wood.
    - Resin: TotalBoat.com has been gracious enough to donate resin for my future projects, given them some love! You can get 15% off using my code: preece15
    - Pigments: amzn.to/3sYC5ng, great quality for resin
    - Pressure Pot: (amzn.to/3tfp1u2) 5 gallon for the big resin projects to get rid of bubbles, or (amzn.to/3pwX0M8) for the smaller average jobs 2.5 gallon, both need minor modifications to work.

This piece is stunning. I would agree that the bubbles complemented the piece. They look almost like blooms on the twigs. Thank you for your work to help end child sex trafficking. And lastly, kudos to your daughter for ‘getting her hands dirty’ in the shop. Whatever she learns out there with you will be things that are helpful to her for the rest of her life.

My wife and I have been doing quite a bit of resin work lately, and we found on large pours that if we do the pours in stages, the bubbles are not as bad. So a project might take three or four days just to pour it up. Do a few ounces of resin then in the pressure pot for the night, then tomorrow another one and so on until it’s full. It does take some time , but the bubbles are very few in large pours. Good luck, and great looking piece, and we enjoy watching.

I use resin quite a bit and green with plants. You do not want to use. The moisture reaction in the resin runs it just about every time but you can also take it paintbrush your pieces that them dry and then warrior larger amount of resin overall, same as what you do, if doing a river table seal your edges. I do enjoy watching your videos. I have like a lot of work so far. You could also use silica to dry various plants, flowers leaves, and retain their color to be used in resin later.

you could put branches in molds still green and let them sit for a year or 2 in the molds ready for the next project, that way everything is ready all you need to add is the resin.

I am an artist, one of the art forms I do is resin, I think bubbles add to the piece so don't worry so much about them, sometimes they look really cool. I love your work and the work you are doing to save kids. I love the fact that you always take a chance with your work, I am a bit cautious when it comes to my work. One day I would love to try turning, I watch a lot of videos on woodturning. I live in Australia and I would love to donate something to the cause. I will go to the website and get on to it. Thank you for everything you do.

Great work Dan. If you set up you mold with the green twigs as you did, then let it sit in a dehydrator till the twigs are dry, you may eliminate most of the bubbles

Perhaps next time you could place your branches (green) into your form and wait for them to dry out and THEN pour your epoxy and continue as before. I like the bubbles too.
