@@harmonydew6486 it was supposed to be bad, because the orchestra musicians, according to the plot, were unemployed for 20 years since the USSR's collapse. Some of them did cleaning, some of them did scamming, some were driving taxis and some were even voicing over porn as a side job (didn't know such a thing even existed, though perhaps it actually didn't). And then they skipped the practice altogether because they are stereotypical Russians and just had to go see Louvre/Notre Dame de Paris/get a taste of local gastronomy/do merchandise (those late arrivals with the infamous checkered bags)/attend a meeting of the local Communist Party and so on. So the first minute was supposed to sound trashy. But then they have a collective flashback (there's a tragic incident in the past involved, of which the violin soloist is a reminder to them), and supposedly get their shit together, so all the roast after that is spot on. I LOVE Le Concert. I really think that is one in a few movies that treat music seriously. The storyline is all focused in a situation that occurred during a Tchaikovsky violin concerto presentation in the past, and those events lead to the final scene (that one two set are showing in the video). It's kinda weird in some scene, like the chaotic begining when everyone is out of time and not together. In the begining all orchestra is out and a chaos because EVERYONE is a retired musician, and they went to play this last concerto after so much (you'll need to watch to know!). The went to another country and everyone was more concerned to do a tour than playing. This lead out to a concern to the maestro who is trying to make this happen because of the soloist. Her is very upset because there isn't a rehearsal and a lot of unprofessionalism. The chaos in the scene stops when she started to play the solo and everyone remembered her mom that one day played with them in the past, and the real scene begins. There is a lot of little details that make this scene incredible, on music technique and plotpoints. Her acting is really good for someone that doesn't play the violin and is good to know that there is some actors who cares about doing the right stuff. I really recommend the movie, it's funny and have a cool story around this amazing concerto that I love so much ♥ Thanks for this funny review Twoset. Love you!
I agree, it's a wonderful film and it feels like a love letter to Tchaikovsky honestly. You guys should all go watch it. Ling Ling will forgive you if you practice only 38 hours one day to watch this lovely film!

"You don't really keep looking at the conductor.. It's a bit... Creepy" Well as a choir conductor is totally the other way round, especially if the members are new or junior. They just look around and never focus on signals; begins 1 beat later or never hold enough beats LOL I was like "I don't care if you sing out of tune of whatever now, please look at me or at least my hand!!" HAHAHAHA Anyway, I want to thank Bret and Eddy for their enthusiasm in music. Which inspire me to continue to learn music (although I ended up in Med school) *real sad case* . As a person who has made multiple productions, I can tell you. Making this was incredibly difficult. This scene was shot multiple times, meaning different bow holds. There is usually only one camera for a standard production, so all of those shots were filmed in different takes when filming the scene.

Basically, it's about a former russian orchestra conductor at the Bolshoi who lost his job and reputation because he protected the jews under the oppressive government. Many many years later, while he is cleaning the theatre director's desk, he finds a fax from a french theatre director asking for the Bolshoi's orchestra to come to Paris and play. He sees an opportunity to get his career back, and also say "screw you" to the old government. So he goes to find all his ancient orchestra members, and they get ready to impersonate the Bolshoi in Paris. This movie is actually called "Le Concert". It's a very good comedy film about classical music, you guys should definitely watch it! And btw the soloist that was playing Tchaikovsky was from Paris's orchestra. She's the one being filmed from the orchestra's point of view, and when we see the face of the actress, she's only on playback. Great movie, seriously consider it!
A lot of this is just the unavoidable problem of making a film, particularly when the actors are playing music. You MUST have an audio track that provides more continuity than you can get from the multiple takes that are required for film, and generally NONE of that actual audio is going to come from the filmed performances. So the different bow-hold from one take to the next is not at all surprising. Also, the editor of the film has to piece all of these camera angles together, and it's safe to assume the editor is not a violinist (nor are they really making the film for violinists), so it's not surprising that some angles show the soloist playing a different phrase than the audio being played at that time.
the gipsy guy in the movir is caliu. search: caliu paganini and see his part in the movie. he basically listened the concerto and sung it by ear as he has no music academic lessons. He is part of clejani taraf(search it out too).

No it's part of the story line.
The conductor and the soloist did not know each other and they had some weird mind talking thing
Dude, Melanie Laurent is a reaaally good actress. She also acts on Inglorious Bastards and the acting and filming on that movie is sick.
And she is also a real musician, search her name in Spotify to hear some piano pieces from her

My life concists of playing traditional music, period, and Gheorghe Anghel is one of the top violinists I know. Incredible integrity, taste and feeling.
Oh wow thank you so much for leaving these comments these guys are amazing!!!!
That guy is insane. If you look at his posture while playing you'd think he knows shit and he's one of the best violinists I've heard in my life. Almost shit my pants when I saw him in the movie
Does the village party in Latch Drom count as 'violin acting'? Or, relative to this video, is that scene essentially footage of a legit live concert?
@@markprocter8608 I haven't seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure it is considering the videos I've seen of him playing.
The actress was trained by my good friend, the violinist Sarah nemtanu 🎻

For those of you who don't know, it is Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto in D major
I love youuuu I was searching exactly for this in the comments
THANK YOOUUUU I thought no one would comment this
I thought is sounden familiar. I can usually identify a Tchaikovsky piece from the general style.
Oh yeah . That's why it's so familiar. Nodame cantabile introduce that masterpiece to me. 😃
No it’s called : Brett his piece 😏
Hi guys,
Actually "her" left hand was Mathilde Borsarello (musical director and concertmeister of l'Orchestre de Chambre de France).
This changes everything actually

I like how the more realistic the movie is about orchestra, they get serious is nitpicking xD
I'm early!
I admire the actress' dedication to learn the movements/where her hands should be even if she can't really play.
That's real acting.
When they said “bow hold” I thought they were saying butthole and I was getting so confused
Hey, look at her "bow hold"!
Me too 😔

Actress: Actually legit violin player
TwoSet: Ummmm, well...she came in on the e flat 0.002 seconds early. I deem it SACRELIGIOUS
NerdSquad Presents twosetviolin never does that
I guess you missed the part where they quote the actress from an interview saying that she wasn’t a violinist. She practiced for two months to get the piece to look realistic but, actually plays piano.
I like when twoset go serious about this review, so much detail and explanation.
Now I know how hard it is to fake good violin play.
Watching Brett and Eddy has inspired me to pick the cello back up after a year or so without playing. Thank you guys for making practice/playing a classical instrument a lot more fun ❤️
Good job keep practicing!!
That's Shoshanna from Inglorious Basterds :)
DexM47 I was looking for this comment! :D
THANK YOU I thought it looked like her, but I'm dreadful with faces, so I was looking in the comments for a clue or for the movie name so I could look it up! She's a lovely and amazing actress, it's cool to finally see her in another role, 'cos I feel like we should be seeing much more from her
Mélanie Laurent :)
Thank you.. Thank you..
I thought she looked familiar
*"that sounds much worse than a youth orchestra"* MY CHWEST
audio and recording is usually separate and cut into small bits so you can do editing maybe they messed up the syncing for part of it
I think they intended it to be bad because they said like "dear God if there's a miracle give it now" or something like that
@@harmonydew6486 it was supposed to be bad, because the orchestra musicians, according to the plot, were unemployed for 20 years since the USSR's collapse. And while the main body of musicians I believe were real-life musicians, the main actors are all actors. They did a decent job though, the main actress is not a stranger to music after all.
Btw, they guy they roasted for vibrato is a self-taught gypsy. His weird technique was even noted in the movie.
You guys are the reason that movies are becoming accurate
Me reading the title: Accurate violin acting? That’s illegal!
Also me: oh...
I just love y'all so much Brett and Eddy, you inspire me to play to the violin everyday for 40 hours.
She trained 5 months with Sarah Nemtanu of thr Orchestre National de France. Also for the Tarantino fans, Shoshanna anyone?
Au revoir shoshanna!
I don’t even play any musical instruments and watch their videos cause they’re so entertaining.
Don’t ever stop uploading videos.
Imagine if twoset were as critical as previous movies/dramas compared to this video (checking fingering, bow changes, stiffness, etc)
their vids on those chinese knockoffs will reach 8 hours lol
Autumn Grace would watch
When I was little my dad showed me this part from the Concert and after that I just fall in love with the violin. So all the summer I begged my parents to go to the violin lessons. And here I am after 6 years.
Finding a movie with accurate playing is like your blood doctor stabbing their way to find one of your veins. I know cause I have like 10 holes in both arms now
(EDIT): I meant 10 pathways of 2 holes.
Also this is h*cka likes. I guess that my mortal wounds weren't in vain
Rron Delos Santos ouch
In one of the latest James Bond movies, the movie couldn't get sweeping dirt right. The broom was two feet off the ground when the guy was moving it. Every time somebody does a job in a movie or TV show, the people that do it for a living are probably cringing.
Rron Delos Santos it’s funny because it’s true...:))))
Next time ask for a butterfly needle. Done on the back of the hand. Less holes yo.
@@orlock20 if you think about it its kinda paradoxical - actors should imitate real life things with their acting and yet they dont do it properly :D But nevertheless they are perfect when it comes to speech, memory and emotions, dont get me wrong !
The last time i was this early Liszt was breaking his first piano
Yeee
I really recommend the movie, it's funny and have a cool story around this amazing concerto that I love so much ♥
Thanks for this funny review Twoset. Love you!
I agree, it's a wonderful film and it feels like a love letter to Tchaikovsky honestly. You guys should all go watch it. Ling Ling will forgive you if you practice only 38 hours one day to watch this lovely film!
I totally agree with you! The movie is heartwarming & uplifting -- I hope everyone who watches this video watches the movie (Le Concert) !! It's one movie I never tire of re-watching.
"You don't really keep looking at the conductor.. It's a bit... Creepy"
Well as a choir conductor is totally the other way round, especially if the members are new or junior. They just look around and never focus on signals; begins 1 beat later or never hold enough beats LOL I was like "I don't care if you sing out of tune of whatever now, please look at me or at least my hand!!" HAHAHAHA
Anyway, I want to thank Bret and Eddy for their enthusiasm in music. Which inspire me to continue to learn music (although I ended up in Med school) *real sad case* . Watching ROASTING video is so fun and both of you are so truthful, which is why I decided to subscribe to, for the first time in my life, and ONLY to TwoSet violin, after being active on internet for about 11 years. I'm really grateful, from the bottom of my heart. Someone please tell them about this!!!! :D
YES to the part about choral conductors.
This is so true, and happened to me too...
Please just watch your conductor, oh choir members, else how the hell would you get the tempo right
@@lacialovescats Not to mention that choristers need to be guided through accelerandos and ritardandos and a tempos and sudden tempo changes wherever they appear…
Y Bin Exactly! As someone in a choir, I have been taught to always look at the conductor!
That's true in my middle school orchestra, too. Our conductor always tells us we need to follow his tempo.
It's actually WAY more difficult and frustrating to learn to act to play this well rather than to actually learn the instrument. As you said, how frustrating it must've been to learn just the right hand movements without the left hand. Respect for this artist!
If it is easier to learn to play she would have learned to play it though.
@@valeriereneeharper I read that she kinda did learn it for 6 months.

It was nice at first.
*But we all know how it ends.*
*NOT ENOUGH PRACTICE! Y’ALL SHOULD PRACTICE!*
As a person who has made multiple productions, I can tell you. Making this was incredibly difficult. This scene was shot multiple times, meaning different bow holds. There is usually only one camera for a standard production, so all of those shots were filmed in different takes when filming the scene.
One of my favourite movies! Great acting! This final scene is incredible ! The actress is not only trying to copy the violinist moves so well, knowing that she didn't know how to play, she expresses so many emotions and feelings! Impossible not to cry at the end!
I agree! I re-watch this movie every time I need to smile & feel good about the world.... :)

Okay but everyone should watch this movie, "Le Concert", it's just sooooo good.
Le concert? What does it mean??
@@andrewdevine3920 Yeah, it's title is literally "The Concert". It's a very good story. There's another secondary plot in this movie wich is very emotional, I won't get into it to avoid spoilers, but honestly, go watch Le Concert!
React to the rehearsal scene of the same film. There, the gypsy violinist, Caliu, played Paganini, after only hearing it on a tape before. (I doubt he can read notes)
yess that was so epic

oh my gosh that's AMAZING! That rehearsal scene is one of my favorites!!
This is Mélanie Laurent, French actress in French movie The Concert from 2009. Imdb trivia says that she just started learning violin a few months before film production.
Bryan Park of course ! She has a lining. She has just learned a choreography to be credible in her role. And it’s already a pretty hard job. But she didn’t play a note.

Just wanted to say (not related to video), was just binge watching your channel a whole last week, and I have an incredible effect after watching your videos, you gave me motivation to continue doing music and practising. I recommend this film whole heartedly, it’s really good. Comedic yet very moving.
I agree -- Le Concert is a wonderful movie. Watch it & laugh, sigh, be uplifted!!
The beginning reminded me oddly enough of my middle school orchestra. Very proud to say I helped by playing out of time and tune.
If they are actually playing the violin well, would you consider that acting?
