Thank you for sharing your data, including feedrate and pass count, for such a broad assortment of materials. That makes this a valuable video to anyone with one of the new dual diode modules. By posting this, you could end up saving quite a few trees from being wasted on test cuts.
Focus can be set with screwdriver on the 40W model. I personally do not bother. as you mostly need to readjust only if you switch from thin to thick workpiece. Your videos helped me a lot! thank you!
When cutting thick material, consider setting focus to center of material, not top surface. This will give you more cutting range with some degrade of top cutting line.
A tip for cutting thick material. Do not focus your laser on the surface. If cutting 18mm plywood focus it around 4mm below the surface. If it begins to stop cutting then stop & adjust focus further into the material say 8mm.
i just received mine 2 days ago and setup would have been easy enough except the yellow/black paired wire for the pwm was wired backwards at one side. i was going through every setting thinking i did something wrong and then on a close inspection i noticed the ground side was perfect at the control board and when it got to the adapter board the poles were reversed. just got that figured out last night and ran a test engraving. today i run speed and feed tests tor dial in but it cuts through 1/8" cedar single pass 50% duty cycle at 500mm. today i will also setup the air assist as i already have everything for it just never attached it to the machine. now that ive commented on this cool laser ill watch your vid.:)
Great to hear that you find the fail, i got this issue on my geeetech 3d printer, entire cable for sd card was reversed on one side, there is no final inspection on low budget china priduct...
I received my 40w yesterday. Swapped it out with the 30w today and WOW what a difference! I cannot believe what I've been able to cut in just a single pass. This is like having a co2 laser. Seriously Wow. If you are on the fence about buying this, you can jump down and get your wallet out.
Hello, with the 40w laser, what thickness of plywood and acrylic can you cut? And the link from where you bought the laser. I'm still looking for a laser machine, but to cut up to 5mm. Thanks
I am cutting 12mm plywood easily with this module, 90% power and 8 passes at 380mm/min... More passes making it cleaner cuts, and with air assist better. MDF boards are 9mm mainly for 6 passes 380mm/min but I did try 18mm once and that was 14 passes 100% and 240mm/min. Keep my power lower and extra passes for better cleaner cuts, less burn marks and lighter black edges
Thank you for the inside look of the 40W laser diode. Too bad it cost 3X more than the 30W. Great tip on the wire mesh under the material being cut so the air assist can blow threw. Thank you for sharing with us.
Hello, I saw on one channel a measurement of the optical power of the Neje A40640 40w (which Neje used to call 80 w), and this module produced 8.6 watts of optical power - less than the Atomstask M 50 (with a smaller focus point). Have you measured optical power?
Thank you a lot for this video! I've always hesitated to buy a diode laser, because i thought they are not capable of cutting plywood around 4mm, but you showed me that i was wrong!
Would be interesting to see what it could do on laminate flooring(usually 6-8 mm thick) as this is an amazingly strong and very cheap material usable for a whole host of projects(structural parts for small machines like belt-grinders, table-saws and more...)
isn't laminated floor somekind of MDF material with very tough surface, i think i still got some pieces of laminate, if i remember i will try next time.
@TinC33 I believe it is hdf, the surface laminate makes it into what is probably the cheapest composite material available and strong/stiff enough to be used as a direct replacement for aluminium for many applications. It really is amazing stuff that seem to have gone under the radar for a long time as far as a material to make things out of...
you don't have to said sorry for your english, the fact here is you make us a favor to explain and educated us... thank you so much for the video and help me to find the air asist for the neje i just buy but is in his way ......
I use neje motherboard wich give a signal direct to laser modul, if you use grbl and adapter board i think you need to set them offline or something so they read income signal from your board and give forward to a laser modul.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy neje 80w doesn't exist i think. Neje laser modul work on ortur machine just leave the 4th wire wich is just temperature feedback, check my video i mount neje laser on ortur machine without problem.
Does anybody know how to adjust for kerf when the laser focus is a rectangle like with the 4063 or 4064? I would appreciate since this is a big killer of any precise cutting project for me now
I had a quick question. I have the same neje master as you. I was wanting to know if you had to use the included power supply that came with the module or was the original power supply that came with the machine enough to power the new laser?
For 40w modul i use adapter wich come with it 12v 4A and this adapter is good for all kind of laser, if you buy 20w machine you'll got 2A adapter with it, with 30w machine comes 3A adapter and with 40w come 4A wich is good also for a 2.5w modul... You can try but i think 2 or 3A will be too weak to power the 40w modul.
I sure it will do it once. Not so sure it will do a second time. these look great on the videos, I fell for it. I got the 30w module, it lasted 5 hrs of burning at 70 percent power. Now it cannot even burn paint at 200mm and 100 percent power. Well Neje requires a video to warranty the module. I made them one, my reply was when it dies completely contact them and try again. Good luck!!
@@TinC33 Yeah I was pretty disappointed when they started giving me the run around. I own two of the 30 watt modules, the one is dead and the second is starting to lose power now. it did a little better. my hour meter has it at 27 hrs. I figure about 20 more and it will be sitting in the pile of dead diodes. I am happy with my Atomstack replacement but the power is not the same. So I go a little slower but I am making money not losing it.
@@Cantstandbs great to hear, that you'll happy with atomstock, also i'm sure you know some trick to completely destroy the neje to get new one, like overheat, overvoltage...
@@TinC33 Yeah , I could do that. I don't normally get to that point unless it is expensive. For the 100.00 us, they lost a long term customer and my referrals. what they don't know is with whom I associate. I am part of the US largest community of Engineers. The one who laughs last is the winner.
Hi there - purchased a NEJE 3max with this module a few days aho. So far, so good! Quick question: do you wear the safety goggles also when the laser is on standby / when you are framing the object or only when it's engraving/cutting?
hello, great to hear, it's the best modul, better than E40, i never use googles while framing, i put them on befor hit play button, but also that's not so dangerous if you cut some wood, biggest problem is while engrave something like inox steel, where the laser reflected and entire room become blue, so if that reflect to your eye it be very dangerous
The video went from testing the laser with the included control board and power supply to when you were actually cutting and I did not see the board or power supply connected separately from the NEJE board & frame. Did you just connect the laser as a direct replacement if the 30w without the power supply & board?
The only difference is in the diodes SS34 and SS54 ... If you replace the SS34 diode with SS54 in the dual laser driver, will the laser power increase?
Good video review, thanks. You mention focus being important, but when cutting the focus will be gone when going deeper into the material. For instance when cutting 6 mm material, will it be better to change focus by 3 mm distance closer to material to ensure closest average focus during the entire cut?
Hi, thx for yours videos! Did you changed driverboard or power suply in 2s laser for testing the 40w module ? Because their seem to be diffrent than in 2s max 40w laser. Cheers!
I can't tell you, someone says its ok, sumeone trow them away fistly and buy better, i use them and no other, so far don't heave any issue, but got in mind that laser is dangerous, so i don't watch it if there is no need and leave the room on some longer job, because of laser and tje fumes.
Hi, I have NEJE Master 2S Plus 80W CNC Laser Engraving Machine. I have not learned to cut wood. Can you tell me the settings I will use and any distance from the wood. Thickness of the wood etc.
Hey, looking at leather specifically... 40w or 30w module? No more than 3mm of material, veg tanned leather. I believe both will do the job, considering the 20W does. But do you prefer one over the other?
@@TinC33 awesome, thank you so much for not only the response but the super quality content and reviews! Your information has been literally invaluable to me the last few weeks!
Thanks. I'm using Lightburn with the A40640 but can't get through more than 6mm wood. Do you have a link to a good machine setting configuration? It might also be due to insufficient air support but it still feels like it's running on half power.
That spruce wood is really soft, and the air support got huge effect, if air blow just a bit out of center into groove, effect reduce quickly. Try with different settings. If yoj use lightburn do you set s-max to 1000?
I'm trying to engrave anodized (black) aluminum blanks with this laser module. The areas engraved are a copper-bronze color, not white. I've tried speeds from 10 mm/min to 10000 mm/min at all power levels without success. Would you please share your settings for the best results with anodized aluminum? Thanks!
That's not about settings, it's about colour of anodising, black colour doesn't exist, so there are lot of mixed colours to get black anodising. You can check my last video where i anodised my homemade lathe tool holders wich i anodised in different colous, when engraving one colour engrave become white, on other toolholder engrave begome black and on third engrave become grey, so it's all about material, if you want to get white engrave try to get some different anodised plate, i bougt some anodised aluminium plate for laser engraving for some button tags and so on and it's quite good tough anodised surface and engrave is gray if i go more passes ut become light gray, good lock

hello. your video is very cool. I would like to ask you if the 30 or 40w module would be used for the Neje Master 2s. From already thank you very much!
You mean if you can put 30 or 40w modul on neje 2, sure you can but if you got older neje machine where the laser modul is mounted with two screws, you'll need to buy also clamp for modul (i think it come with 40w version) and a 3D printed part to mount them on, part i design you can see in some of my neje video description.

I have a questions ? All your. Cuttings in this video you use 17 mm focus, no matter what materials you use? I have the Neje a40640 and I have problems to find the focus in 3 mm Baltic wood, no cutting in 300 speed with 100% power 1 pass , any suggestions please?
@TinC33 light burn I try 200, 300,400 and not cut also I move the focus from 15mm to 22mm minus the half of the material for cutting, if I am wrong please let me know but neje have a diagram of the focus for doble laser module is 22mm minus 1/2 of the material plus 1 22-9+1 = focus in mm
@TinC33 I think? I am new on this with laser and lightburn I just setup everything by watching some videos… but like I am said this wood I have is 3mm but doesn’t cut in 1 pass I use 250 or 300 speed with 100% power…but nothing cutting…
Nice video.., I have neje master 2s max 40w, how can I cut the poplar plywood from 3mm in one pass? I have the focus at 17.3mm with air assist but I do not cut completely the plywood in some places remains is not really cut. Because?
Because of wood fibers wich is tougher than the wood between fiber. Try to lower down the speed or going second pass with bigger speed. Other thing wich halped a lot is to put some mesh under the wood, so there is some air between the wood and bottom surface, do you got something?
I cut to 200mm/m and 90% power, I have air assist and also a raised grid where I support the material to be cut. But still the 3mm poplar plywood is not cut completely. Hi, I decided to buy a Neje max with 30W laser module around 3 months ago related to your videos and tests. I can cut 3mm plywood with your settings(5mm/s 100% 5 passes) at the beginning, but now I can cut with 4mm/s 100% 8 passes even if I try to recalibrate focus, clean the module...etc. Do you think that the laser module lifetime is that short? I uses for hobby purposes, cut board game inserts for myself and so on... Another question is that I check the 40W module, and noticed that they advertise a new 30W module as well, is it really better than the old one? Can I replace my 30W with the new 30W or the 40W without any problem? Thank you!
Hm strange, try to clean the lens also, or contact neje support they may give you new modul. Sure you can add 40w laser modul.on it without any modification you'll just need 4a power supply wich come with a modul.
40w laser module but the most powerful laser diode made is 7w... how? Well looking at specs they say 15w optical power- likely an overdriven diode. I can make a 100w laser engraver based off of their rating by just adding a lightbulb into the circuit lol.... A 40w laser is fundamentally different than a laser that draws 40w of power.
Yeah I have their "30w" which they claim is like a 7w optical. They do at least list the output power which seems accurate enough, first try with mine and it did a great job engraving a design on an aluminum iphone back. The Chinese marketing of the input power is unfortunately very common with the cheaper diode listings, often without output specified. Kind of like vacuum cleaners, they like to say 4.5 HP for ones you'll find in stores (which would fry the cables and catch the 15A 110v outlets on fire if that were true), and even when they say "peak power" on those vacuums they must have some insanely fast oscilloscope because I haven't been able to measure anywhere near marketing claims even when I shorted out the motors and stalled them. Its just sad how numbers and specs are treated as meaningless (I'm an engineer, when I need a spec I need actual spec not some made up marketing number. Unfortunately that's how some people die or things catch fire or crash when the specs are trusted without realizing the claim is a total lie). It makes things very difficult to design for when you don't know what you're getting.
hello thank you very much for your video, is it possible to record mirrors with this machine? since I currently use a sandblasting gun but this seems simpler :)

Thanks for this awesome cutting test, so much more interesting than usual engraving tests !
Thank you for the inside look of the 40W laser diode. Too bad it cost 3X more than the 30W. Great tip on the wire mesh under the material being cut so the air assist can blow threw. Thank you for sharing with us.
thanks, it is really much more expencive than 30w but much better.
it's only about 50% more on ebay
All it needs now is down-feed to keep the focus spot matched to cut depth.
That would be awesome
check with J-TECH Photonics. I have a beta of his motorized Z-axis. works flawlessly and I would suspect he will be releasing very soon to public.
You would love an additional available z-axis. Try using this on your 3d-printer...
For cutting 25mm sound foam, is it best to do use the laser on the surface? On you 19mm thickness cut where did you focus the laser?
Great Video thanks for sharing . Unbelievable how much power that tiny laser has. :-))
Hello, I saw on one channel a measurement of the optical power of the Neje A40640 40w (which Neje used to call 80 w), and this module produced 8.6 watts of optical power - less than the Atomstask M 50 (with a smaller focus point). Have you measured optical power?
No i don't heave equipement to do that, but neje advertise this modul as 40w electrical or 10w optical power, thanks for that info.

Thank you a lot for this video! I've always hesitated to buy a diode laser, because i thought they are not capable of cutting plywood around 4mm, but you showed me that i was wrong!
Yup those lasers are going step forward past few years and they become pretty usefull and cheap.

Hi, do you know of a laser cutter for glass? Something for hobby, not industrial.
No sorry i don't know for a laser wich can cut glass, maybe engrave but not cut.
I'm using a GRBL controller with Lightburn. What did you set the power level to on the adapter board, or do you have to set it?
I use neje motherboard wich give a signal direct to laser modul, if you use grbl and adapter board i think you need to set them offline or something so they read income signal from your board and give forward to a laser modul.

Very interesting but NEJE specs this laser at 15W optical. I really like this laser though and you provide some really good information. Thank you.
Does anybody know how to adjust for kerf when the laser focus is a rectangle like with the 4063 or 4064?
I would appreciate since this is a big killer of any precise cutting project for me now
I think only replace the lens can fix that.
Good luck!!
Holy shit, so they replace only when it completely die, sorry to hear that, mine work fine so far...
@@TinC33 Yeah I was pretty disappointed when they started giving me the run around. I own two of the 30 watt modules, the one is dead and the second is starting to lose power now. it did a little better. my hour meter has it at 27 hrs. Hi there - purchased a NEJE 3max with this module a few days aho. So far, so good! Quick question: do you wear the safety goggles also when the laser is on standby / when you are framing the object or only when it's engraving/cutting?
hello, great to hear, it's the best modul, better than E40, i never use googles while framing, i put them on befor hit play button, but also that's not so dangerous if you cut some wood, biggest problem is while engrave something like inox steel, where the laser reflected and entire room become blue, so if that reflect to your eye it be very dangerous
thank you sir for this informative Video. can I cut a 2 mm thick paper with a shaped contour of around 300mm in 3 or 4 seconds with this module? 🤔
The video went from testing the laser with the included control board and power supply to when you were actually cutting and I did not see the board or power supply connected separately from the NEJE board & frame. Did you just connect the laser as a direct replacement if the 30w without the power supply & board?
That's right, that board is used with other diy machines, neje won't need them
The only difference is in the diodes SS34 and SS54 ...
I got best result if i set focus on top surface and didn't touch them even when cut 18mm wood...
Hi, thx for yours videos!
Did you changed driverboard or power suply in 2s laser for testing the 40w module ?
Because their seem to be diffrent than in 2s max 40w laser.

When cutting thick materials, did you adjust height for each pass to compensate the focus differences ?
No just set focus on top surface to got best result.
Hi are the supplied gasses safe even on highest settings or is it better to get some expensive ones?
I can't tell you, someone says its ok, sumeone trow them away fistly and buy better, i use them and no other, so far don't heave any issue, but got in mind that laser is dangerous, so i don't watch it if there is no need and leave the room on some longer job, because of laser and tje fumes.

This module is pretty awesome. Your cutting depths are really good! Thanks for the very long focal distance and thin laser beam.
true, focus is amazing here
Great review. Did you vary the height of the laser as you were cutting the wood , so as to refocus the beam lower?
No, i got worst result if i change high during cut because always change position a bit and cut wider line.
Great video. Do you think it is able to cut 3mm of dark woods, like mahogany or rosewood? Thanks
I'm preatty sure yes in a single pass 😉

Hey, looking at leather specifically... 40w or 30w module? No more than 3mm of material, veg tanned leather. I believe both will do the job, considering the 20W does. But do you prefer one over the other?

I have 3,5w laser with only ttl output installed on cnc, is it possible to connect with neje software or lightburn for photo engraving?
No neje need it's own microcontroller on motherboard.
I was already super skeptical. Thanks for clarifying :)
there are two diodes that's how 15w
7.5w per diode, there are 2

The 10w module came with the little control board & cables, do I need to use the small control board to use it on my 2s max or Can I connect directly to my machine? Thanks
No need to use controll board, just direct plug to a neje 2 you can also leave old cable, so just replace the modul and that's it.
@@TinC33 I have only a master NEJE master 2s MAX 40w not a NEJE 2, is that still just plug into machine?
@@Arckivio yes it worked for all models all laser moduls are compatibile with all the machine, just need to get enough wattage power supply.
@@TinC33 Thank you
@@TinC33 I have another query. I made my own CNC router so I'm new to lasers but not CNC's. I'm curious why there is no holding torque on the motors. Most times I can move them freely & not like a normal CNC where there is torque? Is this normal?
Have you ever try cutting leather? Lep pozdrav iz Slovenije!
Ja usnje se reže precej lepo tam do 3mm sem probal, nekatere malo zatopi in se vidi zatopljen rob, pri drugih istane kak pramen...
Thanks for your time and great demonstration!💪🏾👍🏾Have you tried the new 80w laser module?
I contact neje team because i got lot of questions about 80w modul but it doesn't exist, there are some ad on ali i know but neje 40w with dual diode is most powerfull modul from neje so far, it's optical power is about 15w
@@TinC33 Very well. It's really important to research these things. I intend to get one of these. Is there any attachment compatible with this machine to engrave on cylindrical objects?
@@jayrome8764 didn't try yet but need another atachement with a motor for cylindrical shape engraving.
Do you know if this laser head will fit on the ortur master 2 an if it is able to bolt up will the plug line up. Please get back to me nobody else will
it doesn't fit directly, you'll need to print something between laser and carriage, i share one version for older neje models, for 3d printed check for the link (thingiverse) into video description
Great video sir...can you recommend me for 2mm or 3mm cutting a paper in a single pass...what laser should I use 15w or 20w or something else
2-3mm thick paper? i doubt it go in single pass even with 40w :/
I was really intrigued until I stared at the price. For the price of such a diode laser module I can buy a whole K40 CO2 Laser.
But anyway great video!
true, i think it's about time to try some co2 laser, i got no experience with them
@@TinC33 before the human malware came around, I had access to one at the local maker space. They are great for cutting acrylics (as long as you use the non extruded ones)
and the diode only has an optical power of 15w LOL. so you can pay the same price and get less than half the power
@@christianfilloux but k40 is only 20x30cm workspace for same price, where neje can give you 81x46cm, which is also important, and if it cuts too, the co2 is just time saving, but also co2 glass tube wears out way before this LED module dies if you use it right, thats also for considering when buying, so if you aint in a hurry, you can make much more bigger things with neje
@@CrazyManer agree but to get 15w optical power out of a diode they have to be over powering it reducing its life as well. My stock k40 cuts about 33cm x27cm. You just remove 4 screws and take out the stamp fixture they include.
Hello and thank you for this great review. Have you tried to cut paper with this laser?
Sure it work but with very low power, if you put 3papers middle one got clean edge.
Hai friend. Is it useful for commercial purpose?
Hallo sir,
I want to ask where is the difference between the CO2 vs NEJE engine?
Which recommendation, before we buy,
Because NEJE's price is much more efficient and its Work Area is 810 x 460mm, this product from China.
Thanks in advance if you can answer.
Neje is diode laser, i don't own a co2 laser, but they are much more expencive, i think more powerfull but got limited working hours, than need to replace expencive co2 tube, check yt for differences, but if neje got enough power for you than deffinitely diode laser, wich is cheaper all the way.
@@TinC33 Wow.., your answer is very helpful
Thanks sir
can u use this laser for sls printing?
I don't think so
@@TinC33 well, ok but do you know how hot the focus laser beam gets?
Does this machine work with lightburn software ? Ive heard reports that it wont.
Yes it work, all neje2 work with lightburn, also work homing and every other functions, but need to upload firmware and make a few setup, check my neje max video
Bought NEJE Master 2S Laser Engraver on Aliexpress, but the dam thing
dies on me after about 15 hours or so. Had several problems with
cutting the thing does not cut. Even bought Lightburn, but no slution
from Neje. Contacted Neje, its a Neje product, got mail back and they
started to help me must do a lot of things , but when they find out
thats it was a mainboard problem they told me that its not bought in
an official Neje store so they could not help me. Funny thing is they
do not send to my country, all country 's are listed but when you try to
pay the answer is we doe not send to your country.
I had bought
another board to replace the first one but for a bigger machine. Start
to work like a charm and guess.. its cuts also, thus the first one was
broken from day one. But this one dies on me after 5 hours in the
middle of a job , same problem as i can see.
Guess what Neje tells me
Hello my friend, can this device engrave on stones with a clear engraving, knowing that the surface of the stones is smooth? Please answer
I don't know need to try on specific stone
@@TinC33
Hi do you know if I can mount this laser to my Neje Master 2S? On the Neje website there is no compatibility info
Yes you but need to replace the x carriage if you got now 20w laser, or make a 3d printed adapter like i do.
4A power supply come with a laser modul
@@TinC33 yes I have 20w thanks to your older video, but its not so sufficient for cutting, so i want to upgrade it a little :)
@@TinC33 is it a big step from 20W model?
@@GuruVlk yes it is also big step from 30w i could say it got double cutting capacity as 30w and about 3-4x more power as 20w, mostly because of awesome focus, but for cutting air assist is must.
What setting did you use for cutting 0.4 ?
100% laser power and speed as much as can to cut trough nicely
Can i install it to my neje 30 watt frame like just swap them out with the driver of course
That's it just buy 40w modul and replace them with 30w, you'll need a 4A power supply wich come with a 40w laser modul.
@@TinC33 roght on man thanks
Is it true like on their website they say It can kut 18mm plywood and MDF?
Hmm maybe some soft one, there are many types of mdf, i try one cut 3mm easily and other hardly 1mm.
Where does one find a metal tube like that for the air assist?
It's a medical needle
@@TinC33 I don't know where you live but in the US such supplies are not easily obtainable.
@@chrome98 really i'm from EU and can simply go into drug store and buy any kind of needle, itherwise try to find somu tube with about 1mm inner diameter.
@@TinC33 nope, requires Dr prescription in USA.
@@TinC33 would a plastic straw like for a spray can work? I.e. WD-40
Do you have an idea of how long this module lasts?
No sorry, but i read that last much longer if we work with 90% laser power instead of 100%.
@@TinC33 Ok thank you.
