As a Canadian army cadet in the 70s, we used the same rifle without a scope and we shot at targets from 100 to 1000 yards. I managed to qualify for my Crossed Rifles and my Crossed Rifles and Crown using this rifle. And I did it shooting left handed.

It was my first deer rifle and I also shoot left handed. I don't have it anymore but wonder if you supported the gun on a bag or bipod and worked the bolt with your right hand if you could shoot as fast or faster than right handed shooters.

I placed tenth in the nationals with the same rifle in .22LR 1998. I shot 96/100 at 30 meters. That’s 4 shots at -1 out of 10 rounds, 6 were bullseyes. -1 was the first ring or about a .22 width from Center. I did this without a sling, glove, or any assist. I’m a right handed shooter, and respect your skill at lefty. Say what you want about a kids caliber. My team using Lee Enfield rifles consistently outshot Anschutz target rifles by a factor of 10%.
I swear by the Lee Enfield. I have shot many rifles since, but not one was consistently as accurate as my 60 year old, clapped out, looser than a Thai whorehouse Lee Enfield, the thing was a fucking tack driver and in the hands of a good marksman you could do surgery with the thing (and I own an OG CZ Brno target rifle).

@@planet9938 lefty’s cycle with the left on the Lee Enfield. It looks super awkward. As wonderful as those rifles were they probably could have done something to improve the left handed ergonomics.

I love Lee-Enfields! After I left the South African regular army, I was transferred to what were called Commandos. These were similar to the British TA units and every large town had its own Commando. The first rifle I was issued was a Lee-Enfield 4 Mk 1 and we had shooting practise every month, more or less. Imagine my joy when, at the first shoot, I managed eight bulls out of ten (the bull was a white patch about 20cm in diameter on a plain brown square backboard) at 600m! It was actually an easier rifle to fire accurately at that range than the R1 (FN FAL)! Of course it was iron sights only, the rear sight being adjustable from 200 - 600m. Not having a telescopic sight meant you could load the 10-round detachable magazine with a loading stripper clip for speed of reloading. I was sad to eventually have to hand back the old girl....

Ahhh thank you for that lovely account! There are many rifles that will "shoot well", but there are but a few that one can "enjoy shooting". To me, the Lee Enfield is one of which I've enjoyed shooting immensely.

I can recall shooting on ranges in the late 80s, besides those in use by Army Cadets using No4s - back then we were firing 7.62 L1A1s (SLRs). You could hear the .303 rounds travelling all the way down the range - much slower than the supersonic NATO ammunition, despite a slightly larger cartridge size.

@@wessexdruid7598 ikr? I recall once at our local range my dad was having issues with the scope mounted to his Enfield, so he sent me downrange to watch the impacts. There was a large berm for people to stand behind off to the side, and just listening to those rounds ripping through the air and smack-thunking into the berm... So intimidating, and incredibly cool. 10/10 one of the best shooting experiences I've ever had, and I wasn't even the one shooting. 😂

@a literal mango I read somewhere that in the WW1 British trenches there was a tactic to neutralise German machine gun nests that were too trigger happy during quieter periods when they weren't normally supposed to be firing. This was to evenly place ten infantry men with SMLEs either side of an imaginary line bisecting the field of fire of the machine gun such that they subtended an arc of fire relative to the gun. The officer then ordered 10 rounds rapid after which the machine gun was never heard from again....

Through a Lee 3×9 on sighted in every year and it kept bringing home the meat. Still have it. Went to a custom 308 in 1982 then my 7mm mag since 1994. Still my #1 the 7mm Rem mag. Down here in South Africa the British. 303 was used for hunting and when duty called, it was used to make war. This was a world class rifle at its time, and still is.........

OK, So we used this rifle in the school CCF 1960-64.Marksmen were expected to get 5 bulls with 5 rounds at 500 yds , we did not use telescopic sights and did not have a support under the rifle. It was held firm with a tight arm sling. We had two sighter shots, marked by our RSM who had binoculars. I remember one guy (who was Kenya rifles champion aged 18) shot the 2 inch warning flag staff in half at 550 yards. The RSM was not amused.

A lifetime ago in 1984 I had the opportunity to shoot an Aus army surplus LENF Mk4* at Williamstown rifle range with open vernia sights. First time I had ever fired a sniper type rifle, prone with strap and sandbags, 5/5 hits on a 6" disc at 600 yards. The old timers told me the best shooters have scored at 900 yards, I'll take their word for it. This 130 year old design is deadly at any range.

I got my hands on a 303 British Enfield 1947. Early 90's at a 100 yards on sand bags normal peep sight was 2inches above dead center punch the same hole.
    Gun made me look good.
I still hunt today with the same gun.
In the early 90s in the U.S. there were a lot of older hunters when they found out you had a 303 British. You would see this look on their face of amazement.
You would always here ,"if you can see it you can shoot it". "Best gun out there". "You don't need a scope on that gun," "shut up about your 270 this guys has a 303 British.lol
I've heard some great story over the years.
It was like the Holy Grail of guns.
I really didn't even know what I had ,I still only know its a 1947 enfield 303 British. It was used and sporterized the wood stock. $75 25years ago or so.
And if you can see it, you can shoot it.

i have only shot it with a red dot so far at 100m but i got some 1" groups but it will be interesting to use some good sights. I think that the rifle was a project by a Husqvarna gunsmith as a proof of his knowledge. like a exam? the barrel and stock looks like Husqvarna make. so sometime around the 70s or 80s it got a new barrel. I wish they would have used 7.5x55 swiss instead, mostly for the cool factor. but i like 6.5x55 also because it is everywhere here in sweden.
i have access to 800m at my hunting grounds so that will be interesting to see what it and I is capable of!

My Father used to shoot long range rifle for the RAF in the 60s with an SMLE and iron sights up to 900 yrds. Interestingly they preferred the earlier WW1 version with the woodwork up to the muzzle rather than the No4. The armorers had the choice of 200 weapons to choose from so they could choose the best barrel, action etc and then fettle them so the end result was a riffle more accurate than most issued UK sniper rifles. Ironically the RAF were regularly beating the army snipers at the time.

I did have a post reticle Weaver on it but have since switched to a crosshair reticle 3X Weaver on a No. 32 mount. As I live in California, I’ve started experimenting with lead free bullets for this gun. I don’t know how they make the modern .303 rounds, but the original round had an aluminium tip inside the copper jacket, backed up with lead. During WW2 the aluminium was replaced with compressed paper because the aluminium was needed for aircraft manufacture. The purpose of the lightweight tip was to give it a range of a mile and, because dum dum rounds were illegal, it allowed the projectile to bend and tumble on impact, thus inflicting maximum damage. The same round was used in the .303 Bren machine gun, but was found to be too accurate so they reamed out the barrel to get a spread… I actually know the full rifle drills for the SMLE, and my favourite was the No4 Mk1*.
