    The Lee Enfield No.4 (T) Sniper was amongst one of the best sniper variants devised during World War 2. The highly efficient 10 round capacity of the Lee Enfield no.4 was a great base rifle, putting out sufficient accuracy (especially after re-worked by Holland & Holland).
    While our Faux No.4 T sniper doesn't have the British standard no.32 optic, it uses a 2.5x vintage optic that was comparable to a rare Canadian contract model that used a Lyman Alaskan commercial optic.
    So how fast can it go? We find out.

    You guys should do a series where a modern optic is put on a vintage rifle and a vintage optic on a modern rifle. I think results would be interesting.

    The No4 Mk1 was the first gun I ever owned. It was out of a WWII vet's home that my grandmother was clearing out. It was beat up and missing some parts, but all the mechanical bits were in good shape. It's been a joy to have a shoot and I loved watching it in action with Henry on the bolt.

      I remember shooting at Bisley, but in '85 with the No.4, loved the feel of it, was saddened when we went to the L98A1 cadet rifle, was a better shot with the longer No.4. Later owned a No.4 but re-chambered for 7.64x51

    may have been an australian thing but according to my father ( korea)and uncles ( new Guinea, new Britain, bougainville) it wasn't unusual to carry a informally sourced spare loaded magazine

      @jonprince3237 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As a Brit. I can confirm the Aussies didn't particularly give a shit about regulations if they worked out a solution that did the job better, and I entirely respect them for that. A lot of changes to equipment and doctrine, particularly during the Pacific campaign were based on feedback and fixes from the men on the ground, to a much greater extent than the British army ever did.

    • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Informally sourced spare magazines were not unusual in Europe either. Goes back even further, I inherited my Grandfathers No1 Mk III after he died, and it came with not one but three magazines. Grandad fought in WWI, not WWII, Royal Welch Fusiliers, so this was a time when the magazines were supposedly chained to the rifle (yes the chains were all missing). We still have no idea of how he got it back to the UK, but as I had my FAC at the time of his death I was able to register it with little issue. I still have it, and still shoot it. All I have done is had a new barrel made. I still have the old barrel, but a lot of rounds were thrown through that old rifle, so while I keep the old barrel, I shoot it with the new one. I do not want to risk wearing out the original barrel as it does show signs of serious use!
      Not like I will be selling the thing, that rifle has a great deal of personal significance, more so than any other rifle I own as you may imagine.

  • @99Racker
    @99Racker ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Years ago, I recall an article where a Brit sniper wrote that he fit different mags from a pile of after battle No4Mk1s until he had two additional mags that functioned to his liking in his rifle. He then had three good mags with 30 rounds for easy reloads. I don't recall dialogue about this becoming his normal load out. Thanks for the video.

    The Lee-Enfield No.4 (faux) T. It's been way too long since she came back on the show. And all things considered, the rifle in Henry's hands proved capable through the course. Congrats to both of you, Henry and Josh!

    You dont need to worry about rimlock if you are using proper 303 brass as it is chamfered at the rear.
    I think it was Bloke on the range who tested this and showed that even having every round "rimlocked" they fed just fine.
    From memory stripper clips require you to stagger the rounds (every other round "rimlocked") to fill them up.

    • @TheCoyote808
      @TheCoyote808 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      American commercial ammo has squared rims similar to other popular American rimmed rifle rounds like .30-30 and .45-70. So yes, to spec ammo is beveled and don't have to worry too much about it if at all, American commercial ammo is likely to be squared rims.

    After watching Henry’s original videos I purchased my own Lee Enfield to create a tribute No.4 ‘T’. Coincidentally it to is a 1943 build, 5 groove barrel. I tracked down one of the few gunsmith’s in Australia that could machine the action to mount the correct ’T’ scope pads and associated rear sight modifications. I started with a replica No.32 MkII scope, but decided that it was only good for a paper weight and replaced it with a Weaver K2.5 with the correct T post reticle. Thank you Henry and Josh for your channels insight into history.

    Thanks for another excellent video gentlemen. As a Canadian I've owned and shot many LE and Enfield surplus rifles over the years. They were sold for $15 each when I was a kid - they'd be in steel 45 gallon drums in the store - anyways they were relatively inexpensive and we took advantage of that. Also for years I'd pick up any straight tube El Paso Weaver scope at the local gun show as they made great .22 scopes and honestly weren't terrible on a centerfire either. Thanks for the memories as well as the entertainment.

    The No 4*T is still the most practical sharpshooters or snipers rifle of the war. You can "whatabout" all you like about various Mauser derived rifles of the war and claim X rifle had this or that feature which was better but almost all of them had some deficiency that made them worse than the No 4. With No 4*T the end product adds up to more than the sum of its parts. It does help that Holland & Holland knew what they were doing.

  • @tedhodge4830
    @tedhodge4830 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I know this isn't how it was done, but in theory if you had a spare magazine, you could have it preloaded instead of fumbling with loading a magazine while you're on the clock. Kind of one of the unique advantages of this design compared to other WW2 era sniper rifles. Just something I was thinking when you were putting all those (rimmed!!) rounds one by one back into the mag before reloading. "I'm very familiar with the rifle, it's been my hunting rifle for over a decade." Whoa. Just whoa. That's cool.

    • @rhekman
      @rhekman ปีที่แล้ว

      It is interesting that the original Long-Lee rifles in the 1890s were designed with a chain loop to retain the magazine when removed from the rifle. The idea being a soldier under duress could empty their primary magazine, eject it to hang by its chain, then load the one spare magazine they were issued. If the engagement then required more than 20 rounds, the soldier was expected to single load - no different than the black powder single shots the whole army was using a few years prior.
      However at the turn of the century these new fangled detachable magazines were seen as fiddly and damage prone, and once the Brits saw the Mauser 95 in action in the Boer Wars, they switched to leaving the magazines in the gun and using stripper clips.

    The SMLE (Short magazine Lee Enfield) the predecessor to this rifle had such a smooth action soldiers worked the bolt with their thumb and index finger and pulled the trigger with their middle finger. It was so easy to maintain a high rate of fire in WWI the Germans thought the British had semi auto rifles. I've owned a few over the years.

    In last year's CMP National Vintage Sniper match (bullseye match at 300 & 600yards): Of the top ten, 2 were with Swedish 41b rifles (incl #1 spot). Four others were Springfield '03 variants, one M1D Garand. The remaining rifles are unlisted. There is no evidence of Enfield #4(T) even being used in the match, at all. Could be rarity of the Enfield (or just easier to find ANY other rifle to convert over). But, your rifle is useable in that match (the rifle/scope combos are pretty specific). For the scope vs iron in the rain issue, an M1d would be a possible test I think. Although, more shooting in near freezing rain is beyond fun... lol

    I think the main takeaway from this - aside from the wonderful marksmanship, well done (I will forgive you the horrendous Scottish accent LOL) - was the reminder that the Lee Enfield was originally designed with detachable magazine use in mind, which people tend to forget. The fact that the British Army didn't follow that up with the provision of spare magazines (due to costs and the mistrust of soldiers to loss the spares) is a bit of a missed trick. Really enjoyed this, thank you.

    My 1st deer rifle was a Sporterized Enfield, that I traded for a Springfield 30-06 as the ammo was a lot more cheaper easier to get and every manufacture made it.
    Not as much in 303 British in 1970s S East Texas where I grew up.
    Hell I used to goose hunt in Eagle Lake as a youngman and deer hunted in and around Egypt, if you know then you know.
    The Enfield ammo was expensive and the Springfield was everywhere and cheap.
    I think Federal and Winchester were the 2 manufactures that were available and as I remember one was one grain bullet and the other was another, and you got what you could find, I sighted in for one load then would run out of it, usually during a hunting trip to north east Texas and would have to buy the other sight it in ,again. When I could get whatever load usually (millsurp)by 100s and Never have to resight or hunt around for the same ammo.
    That was an awesome run as the weather is always crappy in Texas during hunting season.
    God bless you and your loved ones
    Godspeed

    I love the episodes where you guys use and discuss the WW2 era weapons. I especially enjoy your insight on the sniper platforms of the time. I happen to use the mosin nagant with the PU scope as my deer rifle. I just purchased a scoped m1903a3. I don't think it was originally a sniper but at least it has the correct redfield scope mount.

    So unusual for the removal of the cartridge system due to issues of a soldiers damaging it. As no spare magazine was usual given to any soldier, nor was it recommended to remove it during training.
    A British soldier was expected to fire ten rounds in a minute, from what I remember seeing somewhere. And this was done in a standing position too. How much accuracy was expected I’m not sure 💯 percent.
    Excellent firing Henry once again on a rifle variant that had many different parts made outside U.K. Production also like Canada and United States helped in this in wartime use. Early Enfield’s where superior finish with a walnut finish compared to kiln dried beech.

    Learned to shoot on a No4 Mk2, and on one memorable occassion I had the chance to test it on the ranges at Bisley - with iron sights. From an experienced shooter/owner friend of mine those scopes are.....well......not particularly effective but it's a very comfortable rifle to shoot. In ideal conditions they are capable of great accuracy, but good luck trying to find the ideal set of conditions!
    Good effort Sir.

    Not sure if it has been said but it would be intereting to see how the regular no. 4 compares. Whether the faster loading offsets the worst sighting system.
