Bill Hader elevates this sketch. He strikes the perfect balance between dramatic acting and being comically dead. That's sort of the reason it's so funny. It's the seriousness against the plain silliness.
I was a freshman at college when Dear Sister came out and my friends and I were OBSESSED. We filmed a number of remakes for fun to the point where we submitted one for a class and would scream mmmmhmmm WHATCHA SAY across the park anytime we saw each other. This is my fav sketch for those memories alone.
The creators of the OC went on to make Gossip Girl, and they did a delightful homage to the OC scene with a remix of the Whatcha Say song. As everyone snipes (verbally) over a Thanksgiving dinner. The OC walked (dramatically and super hormonally) so GG could run (also super dramatically and hormonally) I just thought of Dear Sister every time, since I watched that WAY before either of those shows
“Dear Sister” is one of the best digital shorts, I can watch it over and over again and I always end up out of breath crying with laughter, it's pure gold 😂😂😂 and the part where Jason says: “Got ourselves a blood bath “ 😂😂 and there's nothing 🤣🤣🤣dead 💀
This sketch was/is truly one of the earliest versions of memes and virality (?) I can remember. Hundreds of inspos and parodies of this existed on YT and each was as funny as the last despite knowing exactly what was coming
A load-bearing Short for the culture. Lazy Sunday and Dick in the Box were bigger hits at the time, but you can *still* find people referencing and riffing on Dear Sister. Just this past week I saw Andy Photoshopped into the Olympic shooting contest. I really think that doesn't happen if fans weren't recreating it in lieu of the official version. All because of a genuine tragic event that you can't really blame NBC being sensitive about. A weird weird cultural moment
I first learned of The Lonely Island from the G4 show "Attack of the Show" when they played the Bing Bong Brothers video. I thought it was hilarious and have been a fan ever since. I wish I could find it, but I remember the "Attack of the Show" segment and it's always been cool to me that Olivia Munn was the co-host that introduced the clip and then you all have gone on to have great, successful careers. I know you guys mentioned this briefly on the podcast, but it sounded like you didn't remember all of the details. I like to imagine that Olivia brings up how she "made you" every time your paths cross, but I guess that must not be the case.
I have been waiting for this episode since the podcast started. It has long been my favorite SNL sketch. I loved this "dvd commentary" and I LOVE that the clip is back on youtube. For years, I hated trying to watch this only to have it cut to someone's fan reenactment of it
Seth, Rachel Bilson already a whole rewatch podcast of the OC, which makes it even funnier that she got confused in plotlines. That said, I did not listen to that podcast so I do not know if she was the Jorma of the whole thing! LOL
These gents are funny, and still finding their way in terms of finding interesting things to say about their legacy content. Last week they spent an hour talking not much about United Way, which they liked, and this week only a half hour on a Digital Short they cherish. I recommend the mates watch the subject matter shortly before the podcast. A good time spent.
For extra context, the shooting after the episode aired was the Virginia tech shooting, which at the time was the most deadly Mass shouting in American history. Sorry if that’s a bummer, but I’m a current student here so i am unfortunately aware of shootings in 2007.
I didn’t watch the OC back then, but I was vaguely aware of the reference thanks to everybody else having watched it. But even without the context, the sketch is great. The letter laying it all out is the best.
A perfect marriage or relationship is an illusion; there's no universal playbook for making them work. What's effective for one couple may not apply to another. Nevertheless, I've come to understand that there's always a solution to be found. Half a decade ago, my wife and I faced such trials in our marriage that divorce seemed inevitable. Yet, through perseverance and determination, we navigated through the rough waters and emerged stronger, reunited, and more resilient
There is a lot of sense in what you just said and I hope mine works the same way too, we are currently separated but I cant live without her, I love her so much. wish I can get her back I can do anything to have her back, we have tried therapy amongst other things
Its always difficult to let someone you love go, but in my case I had the help of a spiritual adviser who saved my marriage from collapsing her name is shelly renee white..
I think it's hilarious that "Sofa King", a sketch that I barely remembered that it existed, has been cited so often lately due to current political events 🛋
Oh wow my memory is actually better than @theloneyisland on something. I just want to confirm that it WAS uploaded directly onto TH-cam by NBC and they made the decision to remove it off shortly after the shooting, like same day. The only reason my memory is so good here is because I was in college at the time and a TH-camr and I was sending that link off like crazy to all of my friends and remember it being on the NBC TH-cam.
There was a full circle moment where someone edited the end of Barry like the Dear Sister sketch. Honestly the unedited version ending felt like the sketch anyway 😂
Let's not forget that The O.C. also inspired MTV's brilliant Laguna Beach, which reinvented reality TV and paved the way for all the mega popular shows that followed in the next two decades.
Fun fact, Rachel Bilson actually already DID do an OC rewatch podcast with Melinda Clarke just a couple of years ago, but still forgot who shot who in the season 2 finale
Surprised there was no mention of the ‘Bu. If you guys do make an episode about all the pre-SNL work, my question would be did you have a plan for how the ‘Bu would have ended if you had the time, resources etc. to make it happen?
As the only person on the planet who is obsessed with The OC, A Closer Look, and I Threw It On The Ground, I think I am uniquely qualified to say that Dear Sister was...eh...it was ok. It was really good through the Shia shooting and then it just became a bit much, but I can't think of a way to end it so as to preserve the joke and not run it into the ground, so idk. I'm glad you made it.
For the longest time, the only place I could find this sketch was like Vimeo or something and it was someone filming their laptop with a digital camera.
Oops, We were one of the group of kids to remake the "Dear Sister" video with our own....TWIST...if you will. hahah Love you guys and credit will always go towards the original!
The total lack of Seth's Corner in this episode is a straight up bummer. How ya gonna do my guy dirty like that? I mean, sure, he often accidentally renames the podcast with his name first, but I at least wanna hear that great Jorma jingle once a week.
Classy people, the kind of people who commence with the sexual intimacy, give it its French pronunciation. The riffraff say "bon mot" like it is spelled.
I do not want it, podcasts with a video component are far less appealing to me. Podcasts are for me to listen to whilst doing other things, and video is inherently distracting.
@@ellaisplotting Are you nuts or just have zero self control? Don't look at the screen, or just minimize it if your peepers are the boss of you. Personally I don't care that there's no video, as they can really relax and not worry about how they look or how they're sitting or whatever....but your reasoning was so perplexing I felt the need to comment.
@@ellaisplotting it shouldn't be the focus - and it shouldn't detract from audio only listeners. And if this is the case, there is no reason not to have it. I can think of several podcasts where I like to have the video on my phone or the corner of my monitor - I barely look at the video - but some times Im bloody grateful it's possible.
Question. To me all the Lorne Michaels impressions i have ever heard really sound like Dr Evil from Austin powers. Did Mike Myers do this as an SNL inside joke or is it mere coincidence? - Or it could be my Foggy London Town hearing it wrong.
The lack of blood was a great joke in and of itself, I just watched it and when Sudeikis comes in and calls it a bloodbath I die
Shia on the floor with the "tactical" gun stance is the funniest moment, hands down
1000%, gets me every time
Jason and Fred looking over their shoulders at eachother is a close second for me
💯 agree
I never would have guessed that listening to this podcast would turn into a full-blown obsession with The OC. What have you done to me???
Hard Agree
The best compliment I can give Dear Sister is that it’s now more recognizable than what it parodied.
Easily Criterion.
This sketch is landmark comedy for my sense of humor
You and thousands of others. It's iconic!!
Dear Sister aged like a fine wine. I showed it to my kids and they about died laughing.
Bill Hader elevates this sketch. He strikes the perfect balance between dramatic acting and being comically dead. That's sort of the reason it's so funny. It's the seriousness against the plain silliness.
Hader... He made many good sketches into epic sketches.
Dear Sister defines comedy for an entire generation.
We live in absurd times. And the absurdity of Dear Sister is just... _chef's kiss_

I absolutely fell in love with this short on first sight. Ive been obsessed with this for years. By far the funniest thing for me ever!
“Dear Sister” is one of the best digital shorts ever.
Love Karsten Runquist got a shoutout in this episode, shame that there was no Seth's Corner in this episode
We were not all invited.
@@TheJoshDM It just wasn't happening right then.
Leave it where it is Seth
@@ottomhgregory7034 🤣
This short was easy to find at the time because it was bootlegged everywhere. Also, teens and young adults were making their own versions.
They mention that during the pod :)
Not only is this sketch comedy gold but it brings the lonely island and their love for the OC back full circle. Man I miss the Bu

Dear Sister is definitely one of my favorites and no one I knew had any idea it was a reference for quite a while.
This sketch and hot rod were my whole life back in the day
This was my first exposure to anything SNL. All-time great sketch
Jorma mentioning the Mona Lisa was a nice touch 🧐

Andy is the only one in the sketch who has the “what have I done” moment.
I wonder if Jason Derulo would have ever sampled "Hide and Seek" for "Whatcha Say" if not for Dear Sister
My sister and I still quote dear sister to this day. It’s just extremely good
I think the contrast between Seth's very New England demeanor versus Andy, Jorma & Akiva being so incredibly NorCal is so funny
Much as I love Laser Cats and other Digital Shorts, this one is the top for me. Love to rewatch it, cracks me up every time.
I’m so glad this important work is being documented, before it’s lost in the booze and ketamine binges of these tortured geniuses…
If anyone is looking for a second Imogen Heap song, my favorite is Glittering Cloud off the Plague Songs compilation.
favorite snl sketch ever
Are we ever going to discuss "The 'Bu Episode 8"?! Jorma still hasn't fufilled his promise in that video!
For extra context, the shooting after the episode aired was the Virginia tech shooting, which at the time was the most deadly Mass shouting in American history. Sorry if that’s a bummer, but I’m a current student here so i am unfortunately aware of shootings in 2007.
important context thank you
It aired at a bad time but they also didn't have the song cleared for use as well.

Air BnB doesn't want people shooting up their places doing Dear Sister reenactments.
Would love to hear Seth tell the story about Lincoln, Lama and Show Girls sometime during Seth's Corner.

From Montréal :
Bon mot rhymes with
"Bah doe". The "n" is barely sounded in "bon" the "t" is totally muted in "mot".
Could you also explain Seth's joke for me? I didn't get it.
No Seth’s Corner? What are we even doing here?
Seth took it away.
