    3 big reasons:
-Knicks letting go of X man Xavier McDaniel after ‘92…and replacing him with Charles Smith
-Charles Smith being stopped 4 times in Game 5 of the ‘93 ECF
-Riley starting Starks over Blackman in the ‘94 Finals
Honorable mention is the Knicks-Heat brawl in ‘97 that cost the Knicks a chance at the Bulls in the ECF.
Ewing gave it his all and came up short. There’s nothing wrong with him ending without a ring. But he might have had up to 3 rings from 93/94/95 if FO/coaching decisions were different.

Ewing was severely outplayed by Hakeem in the Finals, needed a Hue Hollins call to get him to the Finals. His best team was with X-Man, Starks and Oakley. I noticed that you left out his dreaded missed finger roll against the Pacers that cost the Knicks that series. He was like the Mailman IMO; some great playoff moments, but not able to deliver in the clutch. Great upload 👌

Van Gundy explained the missed finger roll... Ewing played with a leg injury & couldn't elevate to the basket. That's why he missed. But yes, Hakeem did outplay him. Unfortunately Ewing was a traditional Center during the era when the game was moving towards domination by the Guards. And Hakeem played like a Guard.

Yeah, Oakley needs to take a couple of seats. In fact, he may be the reason why they couldn't advance. Bulls traded him & the won right after that. I also remember games where Oak & Mason literally fought for the same rebound. They were doing the same job. We should've let Oak go (Mason was a better scorer) for a true 3-man. But the problem with NY sports teams in that era is that they'd rather sign big names & fan favorites to maintain ticket sales over people that can actually get the job done.

    • @Ometecuhtli

It didn't matter, Oakley was no scorer and Chicago still played Mike-or-nothing, wouldn't get past Detroit anyway. It wasn't until Phil Jackson implemented the triangle where they consistently got 60+ points from their "big 3" (Jordan, Pippen, Grant) that they finally beat the Pistons.

Ever since Patrick Ewing joined the league all the way until now, virtually every single team in the NBA has made at least one appearance in the finals, win or lose, or has reached the conference finals. In that time span, you haven’t seen that from every team in the NFL or MLB, or even the NHL.

They should have beaten the Rockets in '94 for the NBA title. And '99, Ewing was old and injured. Spurs won their first NBA title. Knicks could have won at least 1 NBA title during that decade.

The Knicks only had themselves to blame for losing important games
1993 ECF - losing a crucial Game 5 at home to MJ and the Bulls falling 3-2 behind and went out in 6 games.
1994 NBA Finals - Losing Game 3 at home to the Rockets which proved costly as the Knicks lost the homecourt advantage. Had they won, the Knicks would have closed the series in 5 games. Instead, the series went to the decisive Game 7 and the Knicks lost. That was their best shot at the title.
1995 ECSF - Lost 2 crucial home games to the Pacers, Games 1 and the decisive Game 7 where both were winnable games for the Knicks
1996 ECSF - Lost Game 4 at home to the Bulls falling 3-1 behind. Was a victim of a controversial call going against them at the closing stages of the game.
1997 ECSF - Assembled a strong team and were 3-1 up against the Heat but got involved in a brawl which saw players ejected and suspended in G5. The Knicks lost the plot, losing Games 6 and 7.

The real heartbreak was that King and Ewing never teamed up. The Ewing Knicks never had a real consistent second option to Ewing in his prime. When Houston and Johnson came along he was on the decline.

As an Illinois midwesterner that was a huge Knicks fan in the 90's I say shame on you sir! You cannot fathom the pain.
However, being a Knicks fan taught me more valuable life lessons than the Bulls fans I was surrounded by. And we have the magical 99 run. If they had a healthy Ewing they win that finals against the insanely stacked Spurs team. Facing two MVP centers with Chris Dudley with a broken hand was too much for any team to overcome.
And the LJ four point play game winner. Cant take that away...

Awesome video! Looking back on Ewings career and those Knicks years I think about today's NBA and wish a superstar would've teamed up with Ewing. The guy I really wish would've joined him was for the most part in the same boat.... Reggie Miller. Imagine after his NY drama that he ends up going to New York and teaming up with Ewing. That team would've been scary!!! Like legit threat to the Bulls. Or I wish Barkley would've went to the Knicks instead of Phoenix.

Ewing still put Knicks in 4 Conf Finals despite having no 2nd option offensively that was really good. Even Joker needs Jamal Murray. Ewing uad Starks and Charles Smith.

Would have loved to have been able to run it back with Xavier McDaniel for another 2 more seasons. They established a Detroit Pistons bad boys identity with Xman and probably could've made a deep run at the playoffs. Instead they went soft and got Charles Smith who was an okay player but had good stats while playing on a bad team in the Clippers.

It was exciting to watch Ewing, Oakley and Starks battle their opponents in the playoffs! It all went down hill for me when they invested a lot of their resources on Allan Houston. They tried to advertise Houston as a great player. I never saw that, in fact he was boring to watch.

It took the Knicks too long to build a team around Ewing. In Ewings prime, there wasnt enough offense to win a title. However once they got Johnson, Houston and Sprewell, Ewing wasnt the same. I honestly do believe if Ewing had the 99 roster in his prime they would've been better than the 90s Bulls

The Knicks front office failed the Knicks, Patrick Ewing and our fans. Ewing never had a true second or third All Star option to help him. Sure John Starks made one All Star game in 1994, Allan Houston 2000-2001 and Latrewell Sprewell in 2001. The Bulls, Lakers, Piston, Suns and Jazz all multiple All Stars and HOF. The Knicks front office wasted the best years of Ewing. But all Knicks fans love and revere Patrick Ewing. The Knicks should have gone all in for Chris Mullins and Charles Barkley.

They signed many prolific scorers;Kiki, Vandeweigh, Charles Smith, X Man, Rolando Blackman, Derek Harper and none of them became a reliable 2nd scoring option. You can't blame Management for trying.. They also found John Starks who was bagging groceries the year before. 😄Knicks Management recruited Pat Riley, gave him a 500 dollar meal per diem, they were so desperate for a title. They did everything except put the ball in the basket. You can't blame the Front Office. Remember Ewing blew a layup in the post Season against Indiana instead of dunking it. They also signed Sprewell, Houston, Larrry Johnson and Camby while he was injured on the decline. They even signed Tony Campbell a local from New Jersey and former Laker who had averaged 23 ppg a game for the Timberwolves. Knicks Front Office was very active & actually underrated if you ask me.

That 91-92 club was the only one to take the Bulls to the limit. Starks, Mason, and Anthony were fantastic off the bench, Jackson was a great leader on the court and Oak and X were the fiercest forward combo in the league. McDaniel only averaged around 14 during the regular season but he bumped that up to 19 in the playoffs that season and he practically snatched Pippen's heart out of his chest..
The next year Riley shipped Jackson to LA, pushed X out the door and brought in Charles Smith. The Knicks never came close to beating Chicago again (despite the mirage of sweeping the first two games that season before losing four straight) though like others here have said, I really believe the 97 team could've done it. That squad had a balance of toughness and scoring that might've been enough to get over the hump against the Bulls.
