80% of the content of this game was cut because 2K wanted to rush it and that's why outside of the story line it almost had nothing else.(they also fired the main writer who wrote Mafia 1 brilliantly and that's why it ended on a cliffhanger)
You can make the cars feel more "boaty" and realistic in both this game and Mafia 3 by enabling simulation handling in the options menu. It makes cars feel heavier, make it so the brakes lock up with way less effort and lowers traction drastically (easily seen during the prologue for joe's adventure when you drive on the frozen lake). To anyone going to playthrough either of the two games, I'd recommend enabling it.
I've only ever driven it in simulation. No joke, this is an amazing driving model, pretty much can call it sim-cade to actual simulation driving. I loved driving cars in the winter and drifting them around bends, also preforming reverse j turns and Scandinavian Fliks.
U said u wanted multiple paths, multiple endings, etc. I respect your opinion but not every game has to be an RPG. The devs wanted to tell one well-defined story and not a story where the outcomes are variable. That would make u feel u can affect the game but the story would suffer or the flow would be hampered IMO.
Actually, originally, the game was supposed to be way more open, you were supposed to be able to pick what family you join etc. but because of the development hell the game went through, a LOT of content was cut out of the game

Im not sure if the game ever tells you you can but you can rob them like any other store hell I remember pulling heists to rob the highend clothing shop.

Great game, I couldn't get enough of it: loved the evolving environments, taunt storyline, and the emotion of the characters just simmering below the surface (well, Joe pretty much said whatever was on his mind, but everyone else in the game mostly kept their emotions to themselves). The friendship between Vito & Joe is another strong point for me, and I felt the radio stations in both time periods were enjoyable. It's more of a linear/open world hybrid, but that's fine, and throughout my playthroughs the way I made money was crushing cars, an activity I never did get sick of:-).
Funny enough, I feel like Mafia 2 suffers from the same problems that L.A. Noire does. They're incredible games, but the story feels disconnected from gameplay, which works fine but don't bring anything new to the experience.
I think L.A. Noire has way more problems then this game, the story in that game is really interesting and fun to watch but the gameplay is dreadful. Mafia 2 has solid gameplay, not mind blowing but still very well done. Plus, it has an incredible story.

@Jonny B Yep, the city is more like a huge background for the story (both M1 and M2) so it doesn't feel too linear rather than a huge playground for you to mess with. And I actually admire that because someone made more than just a few streets and the environment feels more alive because of this. But i miss Extreme freeride in M2, it was fun.
I loved M2. Great graphics. Not rushed. Linear. Basic, graphic. and very macho. I'm an old guy so that's all I need. I LOVE driving, exploring. Can't Stand the cops. It even has Playboy centerfolds! My kind of game.
I noticed a couple, for example there are lots of clothing options available, there’s a nearly new stock of shirts/jackets and suits from store to store and completely new outfits at the upmarket tailors. The video presents the game as if there are just the 5 options all in which is inaccurate.
"joe wasnt part of the deal" that was one of the saddest lines ive ever heard because you bascially do everything with him, he saves you, you save him and just after you think that all is good leo hits you with that final hit in the stomach.
I remember playing the demo and it didn’t really stay with me and I didn’t really think about it. Then one day I had some spare money to buy a discounted game and went for this. Then when you walk through the snow with the Christmas music playing, I fell in love with the game and it became one of my favourites.
I felt the same as the reviewer here. I think the experience wasn't nearly as satisfying as the first game. Mafia 1 was a game I kept coming back to. Whereas once I completed the story on Mafia 2, I wasn't drawn back to it at all. It was fine but underwhelming. Mafia 3 had more of the same issues I had with 2. In my mind, the sequels never built on the promise of that first experience. I had a feeling that it was a cult game that just needed more development and and better leadership to become a great one. That just never happened.
A lot of things were dropped from the game, time wasn't a friend and with a few mods that unlock abandoned features/places, you can really tell how much they wanted it to be amazing. I have to say though, for its age, it looks fantastic and it runs great on even low end hardware (SLI and CrossFire support is there too and shows excellent scaling), they really worked hard on that engine (shame on Bethesda). The atmosphere is the strongest point, it sucks you in and once you've played it a couple of times, you keep going back for more. It's truly an emotional roller coaster.
Mafia 2 is a great game, but it could have been so much better. It's a shame that they didn't get to complete it, and I wish that they would've added more features in the remaster. This game has quite an active modding community though, and they're trying to turn the game into what it should have been at launch.
If you treat mafia games like more a linear instead of an openworld game you will have a much better time enjoying it, it's not really a sandbox openworld with sidetracking minigames or any sort of wealth bar that you fill up and more of the environment just adding to the setting/landmarks and the immersion it provides through the games story

After playing main chapters of the game and having liked it, you can hardly play and enjoy the DLCs and these are most of the reasons why: - Lack of cutscenes which were staple for main game. Mission starts with briefing screen and ends at a marked point 'safe zone' with a scoreboard - Story missions are two to three, the rest are side missions which are arcade-ish: with a timer, system of scores - There's hardly any mission where there is any set of dialogue - There's always a feeling that these DLCs were done in more rush than main game - I am trying The Betrayal of Jimmy right now on hard difficulty. The only hard thing I am finding is the eternal presence of cops. So not only I have to fight the enemies but to guard my back as well, which is annoying.
Well mafia 2 was a rushed title. I watched a lot of videos where developers talked about how they had to take out certain features that would’ve made the game longer, the ending was supposed to be different.
It's one of my favourite games of all time. I love the way the game feels and behaves. The gameplay is unusual and the lack of a freeroam is incredibly unusual but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Can't wait for you to review Mafia 3, please don't skip over the DLC since it's now forever free with the game basically making it part of the canon for good now. It really helps with taking a break from the repetitiveness.
Sad thing is, a lot of this game have just been cut. Story, activities, weapons, characters,... For example Sicily were supposed to be whole island (or town) with 7 different missions, winter were supposed to be in later game, not right in 40's, your mother were supposed to be alive much longer (acording to christmas trailer), you were supposed to know a lot of memers not just your family, but others, and not just breefly, your sistr's husband were supposed to be part of that life (judging by one of old trailers), side characters like Charlie (car repair shop owner), other side characters were supposed to give you side missions (Guseppe, Harry, Burski and Derek), you were supposed to be able to buy and decorate your houses not be given by the story,and list goes on and on and on. Lack of mele weapons that have beed completely developed, they just didn't implemented them in the end. Side activities like betting on dogs, races in hot rods, fight club,.... Missing metro (underground), usable city busses, taxis,... Dan Vavra left the studio, when T2 started to changing his story - And another person simplyfied it to its bones later. makes me sad until today. It is shame, that Definite edition of that game was made by some random japanese studio, insted of whatever remained from old Illusion Softworks. They should took this oportunity to finaly finish this game to its original plans. (BTW Dan had already finnished his scritp for Mafia 3, they just throw to the garbage and never used)
Game doesn't have 12 endings or 500 side mission on purpose, i think. It is very story oriented. For example i think developer could easily implement dynamic day and night cycles in game, but everything is fixed for a purpose to tell a story. Vito comes home at nigh in winter, godfellas drive to cathouse at evening etc. every chapter season and day cycle has its story purpose setting. It's like a visual interactive novel. I think it is obvious and criticize for it is kinda not understanding the game design.
Mafia 2 certainly has problems but it has an excellent story, beautifully realized 1940s-50s time periods, and the shooting mechanics may not be all that original they are certainly fun. Mafia 3 has best combat in the series though. I wonder if colourshed will review Mafia 3 and the Definitive edition of Mafia 1? By the way Joe's Adventures is set during the time Vito was in prison not when he was serving in WW2.
The only thing that pisses me off about this game is the lack of consistent progression with cash/items etc, you lose everything but your cars at multiple points in the story. I wanna be able to save up cash and buy new houses and build up my wardrobe etc
I have only gotten one ticket throughout my whole first gameplay. Very immersed that I actually stop, get out for the cops to give me that ticket. I like driving like a normal person in this game thanks to the limiter. I also put a limit on myself for guns used, favourite weapon is the 1911. Unless the story make it necessary, I bring my grease gun for it’s concealability.
I played mafia 1 about a decade ago and really enjoyed it, but I at stopped playing at some point during my playthrough and was never compelled to touch it again. As for mafia 2, I also played it nearly a decade ago, sometime after messing with GTA 4, and I really enjoyed the game, enough to beat it... The map is vary small for it`s time, and there isn`t much to do outside of the story, but I still got alot of mileage out of the game (and it`s DLC, particularly Jimmy`s vandetta), and I distinctly remember feeling really sorry for the protagonist (blanking on the name...), by the end of the game.
I really love Mafia and Mafia 2 (haven't played Mafia 3, my potato pc can't run it) I grew up playing these games. I think that Mafia 2 is a great game, but it's also "unfinished" game, there was planed much more (multiple endings, side missions, reputation system...) but it never materialised.
When you are on a mission with any character just get into your car and leave them behind because eventually they will appear in your car and start talking to you like nothing happened. I don't know if they fixed it in the PS4 remaster.
So i got bored and wanted to see some mafia 1 review, the one that i played, i see this channel and it's excelent M1 review and before i start watching this video right after i decided to glance at this channel, i see max payne i see MGS i see True Crime and i see older GTA's. this channel is going to be a blast. alsi Driver.
I got this game only a few months ago and couldn't agree more. My main criticism is the game just felt like going from mission to mission, without any time to really explore the game outside of the main storyline. No opportunity to bask in the success you got half way through, no time to reflect on what could have been near the end. Just get up, phone call, off I go.
There are also alot of things that did not make the cut...like buying cars from a car shop...or using the underground metro under the city...or carry a permit to carry guns...and much much more.
I mean yes the gameplay itself by all means wasn't innovative or outstanding, but when I focused on the main story, the game has a great variety of locations with different feelings to them, different and uniquie characters, and a really good story. Combined with the different weapons and cars ingame I never got bored of it while playing. Joe's DLC was a great addition storywise and the two DLCs about Jimmy just gave you more of what you already had. Though the Jimmy DLCs were the ones who got repetetive and kind of boring, but I liked the story there aswell.

For me... Luca was always the most memorable character. Because even before the game came out i really loved this trailer where asked Vito how he feels about killing a human animal. And for whatever reason this scene was never in the game, like the scene where joe curses at the church. Anyway... i always thought mafia 1 and 2 were best shit ever... until i played yakuza 0--- they REALLY take time with their cutscenes. Damn, could be even better than Mafia 1,2
as a hardcore Mafia fan you're right when you say Vito has a generic personality compared to Tommy but that's probably because they fired the main writer from 2K czech and he didn't get to finish his story
true, the thing is, Vito is always in the same mood, he knows who he is, what he wants, what his goals are, you know everything about him but Tommy is more relatable because he's a normal person that is chosen by the life and goes through things and situations, his view on life completely changes, asks philosophical questions and overall the whole things is very dramatic and artists, like a rollercoaster ride. he's a better written character in my opinion, I mean Tommy has memorable quotes like "when I killed Morello, I realized if a regular person like me could kill the most powerful man in the city, what good was all his power?" obviously I love Vito and Joe and Mafia 2, I never get tired of playing it, but Tommy's story is on another level.

Dint knew that 2K Czech (Formely Illusion) become part of Hangar 13... I wonder how many of original devs from days of Illusion are still there... If none then oh boy... Mafia 1 Remake might have quiet a problem... In gameplay aspect as so far they show that no matter what they do, they make story that is quiet intresting. I remember playing this game from a program that allowed for 30 min demos of games. That is how I first started to play Saints Row 2-3 and Mafia 2. All games I later bought because they where such fun games. Can anyone remember that program because it allowed for a lot of games that you could play a half hour of and I would love to check it out again.
While i can't say Mafia 2 may be, that good, i can safely say that i could playtrough it any time i want without dropping it, its a game that, at least makes you want to play it each time you run it, even if its bit shallow.
I recently replayed Mafia 2 and it's still an amazing game. There is grey story areas and Iove that. It doesn't have the go to the mission travel time, it's missions are fun. I also love Vitto. He is the straight man to Joe and I quite like that. Still a masterpiece and I don't say that lightly.
One of the few games I played every day on PC. And I am talking about the original Mafia 2, not the remaster. But for a long while I stopped playing this game for whatever reason. 🤔

the best story of the Mafia games by far, only wish the story was longer and that there was more to do in free roam, I do gotta say though I love Mafia 3 but I hope they do another classic mobster tale with 3s gameplay elements for the sequel. The dream would be something told during the fall of the Mob in New York during the 80s
After playing main chapters of the game and having liked it, you can hardly play and enjoy the DLCs and these are most of the reasons why:
- Lack of cutscenes which were staple for main game. Mission starts with briefing screen and ends at a marked point 'safe zone' with a scoreboard
- Story missions are two to three, the rest are side missions which are arcade-ish: with a timer, system of scores
- There's hardly any mission where there is any set of dialogue
- There's always a feeling that these DLCs were done in more rush than main game
- I am trying The Betrayal of Jimmy right now on hard difficulty. The only hard thing I am finding is the eternal presence of cops. So not only I have to fight the enemies but to guard my back as well, which is annoying.
Great review! Joe's Adventures was actually set from Joe's perspective and what he was doing while Vito was in prison not during the war.

Well mafia 2 was a rushed title. I watched a lot of videos where developers talked about how they had to take out certain features that would’ve made the game longer, the ending was supposed to be different.
It's one of my favourite games of all time. I love the way the game feels and behaves. The gameplay is unusual and the lack of a freeroam is incredibly unusual but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

There are slightly more varied outfit options from the high class tailor downtown, and the outfits change between winter and summer.

I always loved how the Mafia games combined many cities in to one yet they still look real.
Can't wait for you to review Mafia 3, please don't skip over the DLC since it's now forever free with the game basically making it part of the canon for good now. It really helps with taking a break from the repetitiveness.
Sad thing is, a lot of this game have just been cut. Story, activities, weapons, characters,...
For example Sicily were supposed to be whole island (or town) with 7 different missions, winter were supposed to be in later game, not right in 40's, your mother were supposed to be alive much longer (acording to christmas trailer), you were supposed to know a lot of memers not just your family, but others, and not just breefly, your sistr's husband were supposed to be part of that life (judging by one of old trailers), side characters like Charlie (car repair shop owner), other side characters were supposed to give you side missions (Guseppe, Harry, Burski and Derek), you were supposed to be able to buy and decorate your houses not be given by the story,and list goes on and on and on.
Lack of mele weapons that have beed completely developed, they just didn't implemented them in the end.
Side activities like betting on dogs, races in hot rods, fight club,....
Missing metro (underground), usable city busses, taxis,...
Dan Vavra left the studio, when T2 started to changing his story - And another person simplyfied it to its bones later. makes me sad until today. It is shame, that Definite edition of that game was made by some random japanese studio, insted of whatever remained from old Illusion Softworks. They should took this oportunity to finaly finish this game to its original plans. (BTW Dan had already finnished his scritp for Mafia 3, they just throw to the garbage and never used)

Game doesn't have 12 endings or 500 side mission on purpose, i think. It is very story oriented. For example i think developer could easily implement dynamic day and night cycles in game, but everything is fixed for a purpose to tell a story. Vito comes home at nigh in winter, godfellas drive to cathouse at evening etc. every chapter season and day cycle has its story purpose setting. It's like a visual interactive novel. I think it is obvious and criticize for it is kinda not understanding the game design.
Mafia 2 certainly has problems but it has an excellent story, beautifully realized 1940s-50s time periods, and the shooting mechanics may not be all that original they are certainly fun. Mafia 3 has best combat in the series though. I wonder if colourshed will review Mafia 3 and the Definitive edition of Mafia 1? By the way Joe's Adventures is set during the time Vito was in prison not when he was serving in WW2.
The only thing that pisses me off about this game is the lack of consistent progression with cash/items etc, you lose everything but your cars at multiple points in the story. I wanna be able to save up cash and buy new houses and build up my wardrobe etc

I have only gotten one ticket throughout my whole first gameplay. Very immersed that I actually stop, get out for the cops to give me that ticket. I like driving like a normal person in this game thanks to the limiter. I also put a limit on myself for guns used, favourite weapon is the 1911. Unless the story make it necessary, I bring my grease gun for it’s concealability.

I played mafia 1 about a decade ago and really enjoyed it, but I at stopped playing at some point during my playthrough and was never compelled to touch it again. As for mafia 2, I also played it nearly a decade ago, sometime after messing with GTA 4, and I really enjoyed the game, enough to beat it... The map is vary small for it`s time, and there isn`t much to do outside of the story, but I still got alot of mileage out of the game (and it`s DLC, particularly Jimmy`s vandetta), and I distinctly remember feeling really sorry for the protagonist (blanking on the name...), by the end of the game.

I really love Mafia and Mafia 2 (haven't played Mafia 3, my potato pc can't run it) I grew up playing these games. I think that Mafia 2 is a great game, but it's also "unfinished" game, there was planed much more (multiple endings, side missions, reputation system...) but it never materialised.

When you are on a mission with any character just get into your car and leave them behind because eventually they will appear in your car and start talking to you like nothing happened. I don't know if they fixed it in the PS4 remaster.
So i got bored and wanted to see some mafia 1 review, the one that i played, i see this channel and it's excelent M1 review and before i start watching this video right after i decided to glance at this channel, i see max payne i see MGS i see True Crime and i see older GTA's. this channel is going to be a blast.

They couldn't Polish most of the game but they did Czech that it was working fine.
I got this game only a few months ago and couldn't agree more. My main criticism is the game just felt like going from mission to mission, without any time to really explore the game outside of the main storyline. No opportunity to bask in the success you got half way through, no time to reflect on what could have been near the end. Just get up, phone call, off I go.
There are also alot of things that did not make the cut...like buying cars from a car shop...or using the underground metro under the city...or carry a permit to carry guns...and much much more.
I mean yes the gameplay itself by all means wasn't innovative or outstanding, but when I focused on the main story, the game has a great variety of locations with different feelings to them, different and uniquie characters, and a really good story. Combined with the different weapons and cars ingame I never got bored of it while playing.
Joe's DLC was a great addition storywise and the two DLCs about Jimmy just gave you more of what you already had. Though the Jimmy DLCs were the ones who got repetetive and kind of boring, but I liked the story there aswell.
this is a game not a movie. So mafia 2 isn't that of a great game. even for the time.

For me... Luca was always the most memorable character. Because even before the game came out i really loved this trailer where asked Vito how he feels about killing a human animal. And for whatever reason this scene was never in the game, like the scene where joe curses at the church. Anyway... i always thought mafia 1 and 2 were best shit ever... until i played yakuza 0--- they REALLY take time with their cutscenes. Damn, could be even better than Mafia 1,2
as a hardcore Mafia fan you're right when you say Vito has a generic personality compared to Tommy but that's probably because they fired the main writer from 2K czech and he didn't get to finish his story
Vito is generic but when combined With joe, they are the best duo.
true, the thing is, Vito is always in the same mood, he knows who he is, what he wants, what his goals are, you know everything about him but Tommy is more relatable because he's a normal person that is chosen by the life and goes through things and situations, his view on life completely changes, asks philosophical questions and overall the whole things is very dramatic and artists, like a rollercoaster ride.
he's a better written character in my opinion, I mean Tommy has memorable quotes like "when I killed Morello, I realized if a regular person like me could kill the most powerful man in the city, what good was all his power?"
obviously I love Vito and Joe and Mafia 2, I never get tired of playing it, but Tommy's story is on another level.
@@Ar1AnX1x yeah tommy was definitely a better written protagonist, but i think mafia 2 isn't intended to be Vitos only story. But you are right about which game had more philosophycal questions.
Am still pissed at how many content was cut from mafia 2 maybe the story would have took a different path.

Dint knew that 2K Czech (Formely Illusion) become part of Hangar 13... I wonder how many of original devs from days of Illusion are still there... If none then oh boy... Mafia 1 Remake might have quiet a problem... In gameplay aspect as so far they show that no matter what they do, they make story that is quiet intresting.
Anyway, good luck on review of Mafia 3 and dont make us search for you if you go missing like Joe.

I remember playing this game from a program that allowed for 30 min demos of games. That is how I first started to play Saints Row 2-3 and Mafia 2. All games I later bought because they where such fun games. Can anyone remember that program because it allowed for a lot of games that you could play a half hour of and I would love to check it out again.
While i can't say Mafia 2 may be, that good, i can safely say that i could playtrough it any time i want without dropping it, its a game that, at least makes you want to play it each time you run it, even if its bit shallow.

I recently replayed Mafia 2 and it's still an amazing game. There is grey story areas and Iove that. It doesn't have the go to the mission travel time, it's missions are fun. I also love Vitto. He is the straight man to Joe and I quite like that. Still a masterpiece and I don't say that lightly.

The game is 720p on the Xbox 360, don't get confused with the 1080p output.
One of the few games I played every day on PC. And I am talking about the original Mafia 2, not the remaster. But for a long while I stopped playing this game for whatever reason. 🤔
The speed limit seems to be a bit variable as I have done 50 mph past the police and been chased and then 5 minutes later 120 mph is perfectly legal.
