  • Welcome everyone to the end of the cross over and the birth of the cross under in today's video.
    In this video, we will be discussing the cross under and how to improve your technique. There are four main things to focus on when performing the cross under: the size of the step, the cadence, the rocker, and being loose.
    The cadence and size of the cross can vary depending on your style, and it's important to feel comfortable with both smaller and larger steps. The rocker is also crucial, and you want to focus on landing at the heel with good shin angle, and then pushing off into a rocker that lands at the toe.
    It's important to stay loose throughout the movement, with flexible ankles, loose hips, and relaxed shoulders. At Train 2.0, we focus on the underfoot and making sure we have a solid rocker, as it gives more power and mechanical leverage. Don't overthink the technique, just focus on feeling comfortable and getting better with practice.

      Not at all. We have first timers in their 50s and 60s as members learning now. Never too late my friend 💪

    Good stuff, however, who cares what you call it? Skating coaches have been calling it crossovers forever and are still able to explain the role of the inside leg.

      Agreed, just as long as there is language around the movement so we can identify it, teach it and that is what makes it learnable.

      It’s helpful for adult players. All we ever hear is cross overs cross overs cross overs. Once in a while a coach will mention the under, but not often.

      @@OhYaSure Yeah, but it's the same thing, just renaming it to emphasize the inside leg, it's not a different skill, other than it's applied in different ways as pointed out in the video.

      @@BenBreeg1138 If you watch new kids or even adults learning "cross overs" you would see why its beneficial to be taught this way. a lot of beginner skaters simply cross their leg over thinking thats another way to turn. They aren't thinking necessarily of moving their inside leg underneath and getting a proper y angle and the push that comes from your edge. If you already understand this mechanic the terminology isnt very important to you. But when new skaters think "cross over" they generally put more emphasis on the leg going over, rather than the leg going under, which is the most important in mastering the skill. Defining it as cross under also helps you understand better why players like McDavid and Mackinnon use this to gain speed while skating in a straight line.

      @@Hartwell10 I have seen lots of kids learning, and you are right, they are thinking about the "over" foot. I see this even worse with backwards crossovers. So I agree with you, I just see some people arguing about what to call it vs. understanding the mechanics. Edited to add- I have seen one of the best local skating coaches teach, and she does teach/emphasize Y angle and the under leg.
