Amazing how I've been trying to figure out how to approach this for 3 years now and you're the first person to explain it effectively. Can't wait to try this at stick n puck tomorrow
I have been skating all my life since age 16. It is a beautiful and relaxing sport, whether its figure skating, hockey, speed or just plain skating. Your videos make learning about the basics very fun to watch and learn. They are important because the proper techniques prevent injuries and allow us to enjoy such a beautiful sport for years and years. Thank you.
My first year skating at 36 years old, and I find this video extremely helpful with understanding the footwork. Thank you so much for the light bulb moment!
I'm 43 and I casually started skating last winter with my kids. I've been trying to learn all this stuff also. Starting to get the hang of the two foot hockey stop rn
Brilliant mate! It’s those little tips and tricks that makes the difference. You should invest in a tiny mic though to clear up the audio. One thing most videos doesnt include are actual exercises one can practice. Maybe one or two that you can build off of. Other than that - amazing! Thank you so much!
Is heel pressure also necessary here? Your lessons are the best I've found for me as a fan of skating and playing on open ice. I am very grateful to you!
In the fwd x-over video you emphasized weight in heel. This helped me improve my balance. For backwards x-overs, I'm still struggling with balance on inside leg / outside edge. is there a similar emphasis on where I should place my weight in my skates?
It's going to middle/back. Same idea. Your chest needs to be up, bring your belly button over the leg you are balancing on (as much as you can), crush your shins into the tongue of your skate... We need to lean inwards without stepping down forwards. Same idea as the forward crossover.
i struggled to find the balance with the first crossover, I was doing a good c-cut but just half-way crosses, definitely going to repeat these drills until I get it, great video :)
Loved this information. Definitely will be watching this several more times to get it in my head and probably again while resting between skates at the rink. I do have a suggestion for you on the videomaking side of things and this for any future videos use a lapel mic. I lost some of what you said every time got farther from the camera and had to crank up my volume other times. Thats all though. Great info. I will look for your other videos.
Thanks for the comment... These videos were done early on in my "Green" video production years. I have since upped my game. I know what I doing when it comes to teaching... video production? Not so much lol.
@kellianhockey i saw that. This is the first video of yours the algorithm gave me, so after that I kept watching and clicking on the next video, and yeah all of them sounded great. Your crossover stuff has been so clear and easy to understand. I look forward to trying it out this week.
Looks quite easy just watching… but went this morning 1h on the ice and that's another story! Tried hard but nope, couldn’t do it right… I struggle to cross my outside leg after that C cut no matter what. I always lose my balance! I'm 53 and learned late but still quite agile forward; backwards? Need more practice. I will try again tomorrow.
It sounds like you are struggling with Balance. Before that outside leg can make that cross, you need to be leaning (balancing) on the outside edge, of the inside leg. That's the gliding leg the outside is crossing over. But that is the scary one... leaning over your outside edge as you go backwards. Not an easy thing to overcome. The part of this video at the 1:20 mark explains that. Before the crossover can come, balance needs to established. In a week or so... hopefully by this weekend... I am going to have my Balance Development ASkating course finished. It will give you many different balance sequences to practice at the rink. I have created "Ear Bud" sequences so you will be able to download an audio file that has me talking you through the exercises when you are on the ice along with some groovy music. Prett fun. Stay Tuned!.
Twist butt, same time outside leg over front. Slowly doing this barefoot in living room over and over seems to help...kids think I'm nuts. Will try this at rec. skating Thanks
Great tips! I think the audio from the wireless mic is not coming through. You can really on hear coach when he’s close, so I thin the audio is from the camera.

Hey Steve… glad it was helpful. Check back in with your progress!
yo how are your crossovers looking now after 9 months?
@@ericschmitz03ashamed to say I haven’t played since. I’m starting a training clinic next week and will apply this

You make this look so easy lol, I really struggle with my outside edges but the way you demonstrated this gives me a better perspective. Thanks coach!

@@kellianhockey --- thank you so much for your reply, much appreciated.
I will keep trying, step by step, until I get my balance on that outside edge…
Great video! This should help a lot, gonna try to practice first thing in the morning!
great video. whats a good way to improve backward outside edge balance?

Lol..."kids think I'm nuts".
The audio in this series SUX !
You broke it down perfectly, cant wait to get on the ice
You're a great skater.
I see hockey players doing a quick start backwards crossover to then go forward. Please explain to me how I do this
Thank you so much

I think you’re right about the mic. My case causes problems. I think I solved it though. Thanks for the heads-up though.
@@kellianhockey It's not that bad!
you can say butt, coach
Lol
