- Steve Nash has every individual accolade an NBA player could dream of, but his teams never won a championship, never even made the Finals. Those teams include some of the best, most innovative teams ever to play the game. So ... why? What obstacles stood between Nash's teams and glory?
The answer is an absolute parade of close calls and heartbreak. Nash's first stint on the Suns had more promise than you might remember. His time as Dirk Nowitzki's co-star in Dallas came pretty close, but ran into injuries and some seriously un-clutch moments. Nash's Suns were amazing, but had one freak accident after another. And the Lakers ... we don't really need to talk about the Lakers.

Not the biggest Steve Nash fan, but I always feel kind of sad everytime I look back and think of his legacies.
He was playing against some freaking scary opponents and basketball gods just never stood on his side.
Let's just take a look at his playoff history and you will know what I mean:
2000-2001: Played against a young&prime Tim Duncan, with David Robinson still on the team.
2001-2002: The Sacramento Kings were just too good. They would even oust the Lakers only if the refs did not rig game 6.
2002-2003: Once again, it is the freaking San Antonio Spurs again with Tim Duncan at his absolute peak. And Steve Kerr shot the lights out in game 6 of the WCF. And Steve Kerr was just absolutely amazing in game 6, including hitting 4 straight 3s which helped the Spurs erase the deficit and won game 6 in Dallas' homecourt.
2003-2004: That's probably the end of the Mike Bibby era Sacramento Kings. But the Kings were still too much for the Mavs.
2004-2005: It is the freaking San Antonio Spurs again, the Suns actually had a better record that year, but the spurs was just a poor matchup for them.
2005-2006: The Mavs were extremely good that year. With the Suns not being good defensively, they faltered.
2006-2007: That's probably Steve Nash's best chance for title especially when Kobe was still by himself in LA. But unfortunately David Stern decided to suspend Boris Diaw and Stoudamire in game 5 for leaving the bench during the altercation in game 4, when Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili both did the same thing as well.
2007-2008: Remember Tim Duncan's clutch 3 at the end of game 1? I do. The basketball god is so unwilling to stand with Steve Nash that even Tim Duncan can all the sudden can hit 3s. I still cannot believe Duncan was able to hit that. That shot pretty much just took the life out the Phoenix Suns.
2008-2009: Missed the playoff.
2009-2010: Just when Steve Nash finally pulled the Spurs away (by swepting them). They have to face Kobe freaking Bryant and Pau Gasol at their absolute peak. A aging Grant Hill cannot even slow down Kobe a bit, and having to handle both Gasol and Odom on the same time were just too much for Stoudamire. And with that ridiculous buzzer-beater which Ron Artest hit at the end of game 5, once again, basketball god chose to not side with Steve Nash again.....
2010-2011, 2011-2012: Missed the playoffs. A aging Steve Nash cannot brought the Suns anywhere especially after Stoudamire's departure.
2012-2013: Got traded to the Lakers, but with Dwight Howard chose not to take things seriously that year, Pau Gasol being forced to play like a stretch 5, Kobe and Nash's inability to develop good chemistry with Dwight, the team finished the season as the 7th seed.
And not to mention the basketball god chose to side against Nash again by rupturing Kobe's achilles and injured him after game 2 of the 2013 playoff. Without Kobe, a half-hearted Dwight Howard, and a very unhealthy Steve Nash, the spurs predictably swept the Lakers.
That's basically the summary of Nash's playoff career, which basketball gods just don't seem to like him. Nash was really one of the unluckiest superstar of all time in my opinion.

One of my favourite Steve Nash stories is one I heard about when Dirk Nowitzki got drafted. At the time, Dirk was fresh off the boat from Germany and didn't really know anyone, so Nash brought him up to Canada and introduced him to all of his hoser buddies, who made Dirk feel right at home. It paints the perfect picture of the kind of guy that Steve Nash was and is one of the reasons why he's one of my favourite basketball players ever.
That's pretty awesome. Nowitzki was not known for a big ego so arriving in the states and having to prepare for the new situation must have been quite frightening. Nash is one of the good guys for taking the youngling in.
He was fun to watch!

Nash wasn’t good enough
I remember him being pretty good in Dallas, but nothing special. He was kind of a fringe all-star guy, made two all-star games in his first 8 years. When he left Dallas, he was 30 and everybody just kind of assumed he had a few decent years left but he was clearly going to be on the decline. Whatever went on there in Phoenix, the playing style or whatever, turned him into an all-time great. He was in complete control of the offense and looked like a different player. Those 8 years in Phoenix led to 6 all-star games, 5 assist titles, 2 MVPs. Still one of the wildest mid-career changes like that from any player I've ever seen. The guy had 49, 43, 90 splits as a whole for his entire career. Just insane.

You could bump players and you could push them and put their hands-on them. And it wouldn't be a foul. And when you leveled someone just took him out that was a common foul. A common foul in the old days is tech 2 today. Steve Nash was very tough for a short point gaurd. I don't like seeing people disrespect great players. What have you ever done in your life that can compare to Steve Nash? Everybody is an internet tough guy and a critic.

I literally stopped watching basketball after the 07 playoffs because of how the NBA handled that series. The refs were always more favorable to the Spurs during those years calling phantom fouls whenever Ginobili flopped like he was in the Premier League and no calling all of Bowen's antics. But it wasn't until they unfairly applied suspensions that I realized it was rigged and wanted no part of it ever again. It wasn't mentioned in this video but in the infamous Game 4 Tim Duncan also left the bench and even went further onto the floor during the game. When asked about it in his press conference Adam Silver said you could see the concern in Duncan's eyes for his hurt teammate. When asked about Stoudemire and Diaw's apparent concern he said intent didn't matter. If Duncan had been suspended too it wouldn't have been a big deal but the league choose who they wanted to win and Donnehy confirmed it years later. Wouldn't surprise me if the leaguenordered the Horry "hit" on Nash.

As a Suns fan, I remember every year. every weird playoff injury, just makes you respect Nash more. he never stopped fighting in the face of immeasurable odds.
He had that same kind of fight for team Canada every time a ragtag team was thrown together. Incredible, unyielding determination and grit.
Well, when you get paid 25 mil a year, you probably gotta go out and play like you’re worth 25 mil regardless of the odds.

You feel old when you hear rising star Joe Johnson
I was in my 20's when I saw Nash's video on how to play basketball. Now, I had already played basketball since I was about five. But regardless, I was able to get a TON from Nash's video, which I found on TH-cam.
It made my dribbling and passing better, but by far, the largest impact it had was on my game was shooting. I had already shot very similar to Nash as far as form goes, because I was between 6'2"-6'3" because of spinal problems, much like Nash. For example, I understood it completely when he would suit up and lay on his back with a basketball under his head in between quarters and halves.
His shooting drills of starting in layup range from just outside the paint near the baseline and shooting with one hand without jumping and asking it off the backboard, and doing that until you hit 10 in a row, and then moving back to about halfway up the paint, around the second hash mark, and then finally to the free throw line. Then I would shoot from the top of the key, originally with two hands, but as the summer went on, I could hit ten in a row from the top of the key one handed.
It was amazing how quickly I improved. But along with watching his video and practicing, I was also reading a couple of books on economy of motion because of my back disease, scheuermann's kyphosis, or basically severe kyphosis which came on with puberty, so I needed ways to do things like jump shots, layups and rebound without causing myself severe pain. Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kun Do" helped tremendously with training, balance, endurance, skill practice, and posture and minimal motion. Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung also helped with balance and generating strength and power from my feet and hips, and oddly enough, the thing the Chinese arts helped with the most was rebounding, because I learned how to manipulate my opponents body weight which allowed me to fight for position even against much bigger guys.
I say all this because I want people to realize that it never too late to learn a new skill, or even to unlearn how to ride a bike so you can relearn a better way. At 28, after putting on 50 lbs. over the course of two years from quitting drugs, being on methadone for 9 months, kicking that, and then trading my construction job for one as a kitchen manager in a restaurant that made southern food, i.e. fried chicken, gravy, bacon, onion rings, french fries, etc.
I was able to cut down from 230 lbs. down to 175 by riding my bike to work everyday, even in the snow, which was about 9 miles away. I then picked up second job on the weekend unloading trailers 13 hours a day Saturday, Sunday and sometimes Friday night. My regular job was from 7am-3pm most days, so I had time to ride my bike to the park 11 miles and hike another 2 miles to the basketball court when I got there. Nobody was ever up there as there were courts at the bottom, so I was able to practice until it got dark, which I did at least 3 days a week.
It only took me 90 days to cut my weight from 230 to around 180-185. I had many days where I burned over a pound of fat just riding my bike, hiking (which at that point I was basically sprinting uphill like a ninja, leaping and grabbing branches and whatnot) and playing basketball.
I want everyone to know that you can do anything you put your mind to. I got good enough that I was able to run with the younger guys on any court in the city of Louisville up until I was 33 at which point I moved away, got into a serious relationship, relapsed, and got clean again, and so I just didn't have enough time anymore, although occasionally I'll still jump in a game with the teens-early 20's kids down the Street. And when I do play, after I warm up in a game or two of 21, that sweet stroke I learned from Nash comes right back to me, just like riding a bike.

I grew up in Phoenix during these years and let me tell you, it was something MAGICAL. This team brought such an swagger and identity to the city. And then having Steve pretty much be the mascot (I know that's the wrong word) and the soul of the team. And Nash was the perfect person to represent Phoenix because of him being a shorter NBA player that kind of defied the odds and became the best at his position. Phoenix was a city no one respected in sports and had a rise in basketball to actual contention. It was amazingly beautiful to see

Up until today, I still clearly remember their last run in 2010 in Game 5 versus the Lakers. That last second, I was eating a pizza. Lakers ball. Kobe shot an air ball. Artest got it. Artest shot it. Artest made it. Throw the Pizza in the freaking TV.
It hurts. That moment really hurts.
I actually prayed that it might get overturned into a loose ball foul because of how Artest overpowered J-Rich but even I knew I was reaching. Damn heartbreaking being a Nash fan.

@@dereksimmons2492 Correct. People forget how consistently great the Big 3 era Spurs were (along with the rest of the stacked western conference) and the no-defense Suns just would not cut it. Pop even employed quick offenses of their own AND championship-caliber defense when against the Suns. Something had to change either way. Too bad TD and the Spurs already had a history of handling even prime Shaq much less the old, fat version. Truth be told, it's D'Antoni's stubbornness and consistent disregard of the defensive side that cost them the most.
Nash eventually got past the Spurs when D'Antoni left and even now with the Rockets, we see playoff collapse after playoff collapse with D'Antoni at the helm. Doesn't help that his current superstar, Harden, shares the same sentiments as his coach on D.

2001-2002: The Sacramento Kings were just too good. They would even oust the Lakers only if the refs did not rig game 6.
2002-2003: Once again, it is the freaking San Antonio Spurs again with Tim Duncan at his absolute peak. And Steve Kerr shot the lights out in game 6 of the WCF. And Steve Kerr was just absolutely amazing in game 6, including hitting 4 straight 3s which helped the Spurs erase the deficit and won game 6 in Dallas' homecourt.
2003-2004: That's probably the end of the Mike Bibby era Sacramento Kings. But the Kings were still too much for the Mavs.
2004-2005: It is the freaking San Antonio Spurs again, the Suns actually had a better record that year, but the spurs was just a poor matchup for them.
2005-2006: The Mavs were extremely good that year. With the Suns not being good defensively, they faltered.
2006-2007: That's probably Steve Nash's best chance for title especially when Kobe was still by himself in LA. But unfortunately David Stern decided to suspend Boris Diaw and Stoudamire in game 5 for leaving the bench during the altercation in game 4, when Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili both did the same thing as well.
2007-2008: Remember Tim Duncan's clutch 3 at the end of game 1? I do. The basketball god is so unwilling to stand with Steve Nash that even Tim Duncan can all the sudden can hit 3s. I still cannot believe Duncan was able to hit that. That shot pretty much just took the life out the Phoenix Suns.
2008-2009: Missed the playoff.
2009-2010: Just when Steve Nash finally pulled the Spurs away (by swepting them). They have to face Kobe freaking Bryant and Pau Gasol at their absolute peak. A aging Grant Hill cannot even slow down Kobe a bit, and having to handle both Gasol and Odom on the same time were just too much for Stoudamire. And with that ridiculous buzzer-beater which Ron Artest hit at the end of game 5, once again, basketball god chose to not side with Steve Nash again.....
2010-2011, 2011-2012: Missed the playoffs. A aging Steve Nash cannot brought the Suns anywhere especially after Stoudamire's departure.
2012-2013: Got traded to the Lakers, but with Dwight Howard chose not to take things seriously that year, Pau Gasol being forced to play like a stretch 5, Kobe and Nash's inability to develop good chemistry with Dwight, the team finished the season as the 7th seed.
And not to mention the basketball god chose to side against Nash again by rupturing Kobe's achilles and injured him after game 2 of the 2013 playoff. Without Kobe, a half-hearted Dwight Howard, and a very unhealthy Steve Nash, the spurs predictably swept the Lakers.
That's basically the summary of Nash's playoff career, which basketball gods just don't seem to like him. Nash was really one of the unluckiest superstar of all time in my opinion.
I'm a recent Mavs & NBA/Hoops fan (since 2019) but doing my research and finding out that we got so so unlucky in '03 is heartbreaking. Could've gotten Nash a ring.

Steve Nash is one of the few guys I’ve ever seen play with a swollen eyeball and a broken nose like it didn’t even matter. One of the best PGs of all time and slept on when the media talk about the best passers of all time. Easily up there with Magic and Stockton.

I miss that era. Young Lebron, Duncan, Garnett, Dirk, Nash, Shaq, Kobe etc. The players now are great, but I just can't seem to get invested in them like before. As a Suns fan, all those losses hurt, but those series were so entertaining to watch. The game just isn't the same

Outside of 2007, Nash’s teams just lost to superior opponents. The one year he was on a team that could legitimately be considered the title favorite, he got unlucky with the suspensions.

#13 Steve Nash is my favourite NBA player of ALL-TIME. He was the reason I picked up the game and have loved playing ever since. The man didn't show quit and was relentless on the court despite his limitations. He was the heart and soul of those Phoenix Suns squads. I really hated that he made the decision to go to the Lakers but was happy that he played long enough to be placed in the top 3 of all-time career assists. I still watch his videos regularly and sometimes before my weekly pickup ball sessions to hype myself. Sometimes when I take 3s or make a behind the back pass, I think of the man who inspired me to pick up the basketball.

The Kings and Suns from the 2000s are teams that I always feel wistful about. They were both so close to winning pivotal series that probably decided the championship, even though they weren't in the Finals.

The '04 Mavs had the best Offensive Rating relative to league average in NBA history. It wasn't the highest raw number (the '20 Mavs just did that this season), but it was the highest adjusted for the league. They were 8.9% better than league average.
