- This might be the most requested video we've ever had, so thrilled to finally present Dan Marino's episode of "Untitled." Well, it's Ryan's episode of "Untitled" about Dan Marino, but you get it.
I don't think any of us fully understood how absurd Marino's career was - in a few different senses of the word "absurd." MVP in his first full season as starter, his name lining the league's record books, two of the most accomplished coaches the league has ever seen, and a level of disfunction that makes the shortcomings more frustrating and the success even more impressive. Achieving that at the same time is a very impressive feat - just probably not as sweet as a Super Bowl win would've been.

I met Dan Marino in a Starbucks in Weston, FL and I knew he didn't like being recognized in public so i just gave him a knowing smile and he winked back at me and it made my year. Legend.
He hated fans hes was a jerkoff a buddy of mine asked him for a autograph and he told him buy tickets to a game . Lol my buddy was so embarrassed.

He funded the construction of a children’s hospital and seemed to genuinely love doing charity events and interacting with special needs kids. Maybe he was just having a rough day.
I went to Pitt with Marino and I saw him weekly around campus. He was always a nice guy when you talked to him. Very humble.

Dan Marino is the classic example of the fact that it takes more than just a great quarterback to win the Super bowl. Super bowls are won by TEAMS, not players only.
Totally agree with you. One player or the QB isn't responsible for fumbling on the kick off, or the QB is not responisible for giving up 30+ points, or the defense holds the other team to 10 points but their own offense only scores 3, etc. Football is the ultimate team sport where all 11 players on the field has to do their job in order for something to work out. One player miss their assignment can be lethal. Great teams win champion and not a single player.
Word... TB12 is the best example. One of the reasons he takes pay cuts is because he knows exactly that. If the Bucs don’t have all those replacement lineman and weapons on offense and defense they don’t win it.. and you need a whole lot of luck.
This is why I’m so sick of people saying that Tom Brady is the only reason that the Patriots were a dynasty and that Bill Belichick was not a good coach.

Clutch field goals, a pick, and defense was the key in four or five of those SB wins.
I was a huge football fan during the 80's through the mid 90's. Both Don Shula and Jimmy Johnson tried to help out Dan by developing a running game. I just didn't pan out. Dan had the same problem John Elway had: namely he had to carry the team. Fortunately for John, Denver got Tyrell Davis and a good defense and he won two rings. Dan, no such luck.

@TheWhiteWhale I think they were still the second-best team in 91', but I think both the Cowboys and 49ers were better in 92-93'. The Giants played a near-perfect game to win SB XXV, but credit where credit is due. The Bills just weren't as sharp that night as in previous weeks. They also weren't used to the physicality of the Giants.

I remember the Marino years well, the owners of the Dolphins never really tried to build a contender around Marino. Had Marino played for The Cowboys or even the 49ers he might have become the greatest of all time. But the Dolphins ownership, never tried to give him a team ready to contend for the Superbowl.

They had a defense called the Killer Bees, and 2 great wide receivers Clayton and Duper. He had a solid team. They went 14-2 in 84. What do you mean they weren't ready? They just played a better team in the SB
Exactly Frank, one man does not a Superbowl make. The Dolphins probably had one or two years with a descent defense durning his career, and throughout the rest of his career the defense was a complete joke. Aside from Dan, the offense didn't fare much better, boasting nothing more than a couple solid receivers throughout the entirety of his career. Marino never had a good running back to work with at all and besides Duper and Clayton, no other household names on the team during his time there, period. So, one's gotta hand it to the man to accomplish all that he did in spite it all.

I watched NFL Network's biography on Marino, and they ask him directly about never winning a Super Bowl. Marino, not wanting to lie because he's an awesome guy like that....gets rather emotional when reflecting. He was holding back tears. He admits that of course he wishes he had won a Super Bowl, and he's well aware of the blemish.
Marino's mother was also interviewed and she was even more candid. She made it sound like it is something that weighs on him, constantly. I could not help but just feel absolutely horrible for Marino after watching that. Football is a team sport. I don't think Marino's career should be diminished because of no Super Bowl ring. The same as Jim Kelly with the Bills.
On a CBS pre-game show years ago Boomer Esiason said something about a quarterback not wanting end up not winning a Super Bowl like Dan Marino...while Dan Marino was sitting next to him. Marino just looked at him and asked "and how many Super Bowls did *you* win?"
And I 100% agree about Marino and Kelly. They're all time greats even without rings.

I’m very sad, but that doesn’t take away from how great Dan truly was. Best pure passer there ever was. He deserved better.
I still remember the first time I’ve seen him. His arm was amazing.

I actually think they did a pretty bad job relating how good he really was. He destroyed records at the time and they stood until the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees came along in a 2010's era that saw an absolute explosion in the use of the shotgun formation, yards, and attempts per game. Not too mention many QB and WR friendly rule changes. Marino also played opposite maybe the 10 OR 20 greatest pass rushers of all time during his career. Guys like Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, Bruce Smith, John Randle, Derrick Thomas, Chris Doleman, and Clyde Simmons. Scary AF.
The most impressive thing about Marino that rarely gets talked about, but was the primary reason for his "quick release," was how fast he could read a defense. His footwork was also very underrated. He wasn't a "scrambler" per se, but his movement in the pocket was a major reason why he was able to avoid sacks..it wasn't just his line.
Same with Brady with the pocket presence and getting the ball out fast.
People don't get you don't need to run around, just slight steps in the pocket can give you plenty or time to find a read.
If he had these amazing, impressive skills then where did they go during playoff time? Of the 18 he played, he only had 5 games over a 100 passer rating and 3 of those were with 30 or less passing attempts. He had 12 postseason games with over 30 passing attempts, and in 8 of those his passer rating falls to below 80. Where did his defensive reading skills go to in those 8 critical games?
Per se? He wasn't a scrambler by any measure. He was absolutely terrible at scrambling even if you were comparing him to HS QBs.
@@RurbanWalker Yes, PER SE..as in Marino was not a "running" QB, or particularly good at scrambling outside the pocket, and he would probably be the first to admit that. But within the pocket he was slippery..especially early in his career before he wrecked his knees. Marino was very deft at moving his feet WITHIN THE POCKET. His low sack totals weren't just due to his O line. It's one of the reasons why it was so dangerous to blitz him (as the Bears found out rather rudely in their lone loss in 85).

Dan Marino never had a running game with over average 4 yards per carry.
Jimmy Johnson built him a very good defense, but yeah he never benefited from a good running game.
Marino is the best example, out of several good examples, of how a top tier player cannot always be measured by rings. Dude is near the top of every stat category and he played in a totally different league than we have now. Very violent and not pass-happy. Arguably, with modern rules and play calling he might be at the top of all those record books still. But no rings. You point to rings, you’re pointing to the defense and the running backs and the line and the receiving corps and coaching staff and the training staff and the GM… it’s not just a QB.
And its really not so much the style of play that wins or loses Super Bowls, it’s the amount of turnovers
He's also proof that one man can't do it alone. A great QB might keep you in the playoffs on a consistent basis on his own but it takes a team to win a championship.

Poor Dan had to work with the likes of Lorenzo Hampton, Troy Stradford , and Sammie Smith. Not exactly Hall of Famers. Hell, not even Pro Bowlers. Dan was forced to throw the ball 50 times a game. Everyone knew what was coming. It's a tribute to Dan's skill that he won as many games as he did. He deserved better.
And Francois point about Elway is very well taken. As good as he was, Elway never won a Superbowl until he had Terrell Davis. All of a sudden Elway didn't have to carry the team on his back

Fact check: Marino was drafted by a team that rode its run game to the Super Bowl woth David Woodley at quarterback.

And it wasn't. Starting in Marino's rookie year (1983), here's where the Dolphins ranked in yards/rushing attempt: 23rd, 16th, 18th, 4th, 10th, 23rd, 28th, 26th, 21st, 20th, 26th, 10th, 23rd, 21st, 30th, 30th, and 28th.
That's three top 10 finishes in 17 seasons, with an average ranking of 21st. And they were that ineffective on a rate basis even though opposing defenses likely spent the bulk of their preparation on the Dolphins' passing game.
That, to state the blindingly obvious, is very not good.
Dan Marino had the best throwing motion and mechanics, with a perfect release. The best Dolphins team in the 90s that should have won the Super Bowl could not beat the Buffalo Bills.

It’s pretty well known that Marino and the Dolphins gave the ‘85 Bears their only loss. I would have liked to see a rematch in the SB and I’ll never understand how the Patriots beat the Dolphins in the AFC Championship.
People only focus on the QB matchup in the '85 AFC Championship but the Pats were very talented beyond the...wonky QB battle. They had 2 first team All Pro guys: Andre Tippett at outside linebacker and especially John Hannah, one of the greatest guards of all time. Indeed, before the Brady/Belichick era, Hannah was hands down the best player in Pats history
To SB's point on Miami's porous run defense, throwing that defense against a top offensive line, that was a huge mismatch. Pats had ~250 yds on the ground and were top 5 in rushing attempts. Combine it with subpar throwing weather? On paper it seems like a confusing win, the team with Marino lost to the team with Tony freakin Eason, but the stats of the game make sense
The Patriots had a better team overall and a very good running game that decimated Miami's defense. Miami's biggest issue during Marino's tenure was the run game on both sides of the ball. They just couldn't figure it out.
Divisional rivals. You played them 2x already and probably know their plays offensively and defensively.
Fumbles. Interception. Run defense. Sacks total breakdown. Patriots just played perfect and forgot everything against the bears. Weird

I'd rather have the best QB mental talent than arm talent. That's really how Brady won all those Superbowls.
having been a long time dolphin fan i've spent a lot of time thinking about marino. the best explanation i can come with is that he was so talented that his team won 4 or so games every year that they had no business winning, which resulted in the team having worse draft picks and tougher schedules.
Schedules are already predetermined for the most part. That has nothing to do with it. If they had a tough schedule it was merely a coincidence or they had other good teams in their division year in, and year out.

While 8 of your 16 games were against your division rivals, the other 8 were based on your record and the records of your opponents from the previous year.
Prior to the realignment of 2002:
1st place finisher: played 1st and 2nd in one division, 1st and 3rd in the other
2nd place finisher: played 2nd and 4th in one division, 1st and 2nd in the other
3rd place finisher: played 1st and 3rd in one division, 3rd and 5th in the other
4th place finisher: played 4th and 5th in one division, 2nd and 4th in the other
5th place finisher: played 3rd and 5th in one division, 4th and 5th in the other
There were similar rules for the non conference games as well.
This is why you are wrong, as Miami would player tougher schedules regularly than if they had otherwise lost more games.

In 1982, the year before Marino arrived, the Dolphins had the third best rushing offense in the NFL, including the league's 2nd leading rusher in Andra Franklin. The lack of running game was down to Shula being so enamored with Marino that he overused him to the exclusion of any other facet of their offense.
Since the Dolphins last won the Super Bowl in 1973 it seemed they petered out overall.

The reason why Dan never won a ring is perfectly summed up by this fun fact: he threw 44 TD passes for a team that finished 8-8. He had no running game and, more importantly, terrible defenses. That isn't a problem against bad teams in the regular season, where Dan could turn the game into a shootout. But you don't get to play bad teams in the playoffs, and that's where the Dolphins' weaknesses would get exposed.
His team was just never good enough to get it done. The best team he had was the '84 team, but no one was going to deny the '84 49ers. And even if he'd somehow miraculously carried one of those early 90s teams past the Bills and into the Super Bowl, they'd have gotten blasted by the NFC rep. It's no accident that the NFC champion won the Super Bowl every single year of Marino's prime.

The NFC teams were so much more physical and better on defense in those years. The Giants, the Bears, The Redskins, the 49ers. Everyone remembers the niners offense but that defense was extremely physical with Ronnie Lott and company. The Giants, Redskins and Bears were so intimidating. It seemed like the Raiders were the only AFC team with that kind of physical play but they were slowly fading after 1983. By the early 90's it was the cowboys and niners alone.
Those top NFC teams just DOMINATED the line of scrimmage in those days. That's really what undid the Bills and the Broncos in those SB losses. The Bills in particular were loaded with talent (more than any previous AFC champion in those years) but always got beat at the line of scrimmage in those SB's. The Broncos were not as talented as the Bills but had John Elway in his prime. Good enough to win the AFC 3 times, but got destroyed at the line of scrimmage in the SB.
Jim Kelly had an AWESOME defense. A GREAT RB in Thurman Thomas - went to FOUR super bowls and won ZERO. Excuses, excuses.
@@marcoslaureano5562 The Bills did not have an "awesome" defense. They had a few great players but as a unit they weren't as good as the NFC teams. Their Super Bowl teams ranked 14th, 16th, 10th, and 9th in defensive DVOA. By some of the more basic stats they ranked even worse than that.

The Dolphins of the late 80s were very similar to the Saints team of 2014-2016. Both teams had potent offenses that ranked near the top of the league and quarterbacks who were setting one record after another but their defenses ranked near or at the bottom. For this reason, both teams were not playoff contenders during those periods.
That was Peyton Manning's curse for all but one month of his career at Indianapolis.

@@krambone You do know about Kurt Warner and the Rams in '99? His Defense gave up 37 pts. in that 1st playoff game so Warner threw 5 TD passes and led his team to a 49-37 win. He had no running game in all 3 playoff games that year. Kurt ended with over 1,000 yds. passing in those 3 games while his backs ended with around 100 yds. for those 3 games.

Dolphins were not beating the Bills 2 times in one year back then. It was only the hatred the two teams had for each other that allowed the Dolphins to even compete. The Bills were better everywhere than the Dolphins except qb.
It wasn't just Marino's injury that sunk them, it was Mitchell also getting hurt and most of the D as well. Add on top of that a brutal 3-game stretch that saw them face the Giants, Bills and Steelers (all playoff teams that season) and then the Chargers who literally always beat them in San Diego at that time.
A lot of factors went into this. Bad luck, timing. Defense gave up 34 points a game and over 200 yds rushing in Marino's 10 playoff losses. But the main problem was Don Shula. He failed to put a team together and Joe Robbie was a tightwad. Shula drafted one bust after another (with an occasional nice player but no game changer). He passed on Thurman Thomas, Emmitt Smith, Charles Haley, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Steve Atwater, Issac Bruce, and many others. No innovation on offense. Same pro set with no intention on establishing a run game. Why not let Marino run a west coast offense, or a variation of it. Run and shoot. K gun. Something!!!

Dude threw for 5000 yards and 48 TDs in 1984, when 3000 yards and 20 TDs was considered good. These days, no telling what he could do.
@G BLICKY how do you really know? Maybe, but maybe not. Remember the rules back then applied to all QBs. Yet QBs like Montana, Elway, Aikman, Plunkett, Young, Favre, & Warner, were able to win 1 or more rings under the same rules as DM.
The new rules giving the QB & WR more protection did account for higher numbers in the passing game. But both teams benefitted as well.
There is 1 winner & 1 loser in every game. That never changed. Passing yardage, points, TD passes, increased in recent times, but wins & losses is the key. The QBs with rings, yesterday's Montana, Elway, Aikman, Bradshaw, Staubach, etc., always brought their A game to the playoffs. They did not always post the highest numbers, but found a way to win.
Likewise today's Brady, Big Ben, Manning bros, Brees, Rodgers, Mahomes, etc., somehow find a way to win. Mahomes was pretty lame through 50 minutes of the last SB, but pulled it out when he needed to.
DM was 8-10 in the post-season. Not terrible, but not really that good either. I watched DM through his whole career. His post-season performance was not that good. Against a really good defense he & his team struggled.
DM was great for sure. But I just didn't see enough great play in his playoff games.

Because, while Marino had all the physical tools, he wasn't a particularly good leader. And leadership is a huge part of being quarterback.
If you think Marino wasn't a good leader, you're a special kind of stupid. Have you ever watched a football game that wasn't played on a console? Have you ever lived anywhere that wasn't listed in your mother's name?
Also he didn't play particularly well in the playoffs that was the main reason
Simple: Shula and the rest of the organization focused so much on giving Marino receivers (which they didn't even do well in my opinion) that they pretty much ignored everything else like the running game, defense, and special teams.
It's not that those areas were ignored, it's that so many bad draft picks were sunk into RB and D. There's a difference. Special teams were definitely not ignored BTW. Pete Stoyanovich and Olindo Mare are two of the best kickers in Dolphins history and Shula also drafted Reggie Roby. MIke Westhoff is one of the best special teams coaches ever and was with the Fins for years both in the Shula and JJ eras.
He never had a running game or a defense. It was always hey Dan we are down again can you go win this game for us. Look at how many QBs they have had since he left. Should prove it right there.
He did have the #1 defense his final 2 seasons,but by then he wasn't the same guy as in the 80s

I still remember that 4th qt comeback against the colts where he pulled an audible despite not being allowed to by JJ, where he identified an opening prior to snapping and completed a deep pass instead. It was hard to argue with the results lol... they’d go on to win that one.

I watched Dan play in that era, and in my opinion, He was and still is the very best all around quarterback of all time. I have always been a Chicago Bears fan, and back in the 85 season, I still have nightmares of Dan and the Mark brothers tearing up that Bears secondary. I always wondered what that Super Bowl would have been if the Bears would have faced off again against Dan and the Dolphins.
I always thought Dans lack of mobility exposed him during the playoffs. Montana Aikmen Young Elway all had the legs to get them 1st downs. Montana threw 100s TDs outside the pocket.

Marino's career reinforces the fact that offense wins games, but defense wins championships. He never had a good enough D to win against good playoff teams. Not a big Marino fan, but i do feel bad that someone that great could never win the big game.

There is a part of me that wishes Marino made it to the SB in 85 just to see if he could have repeated that performance against the Bears. I think ultimately the Bears would have won as they were destined to win that game but if there was any team that might have made them work for it, it was Miami. That quick release of Marino's was the perfect antidote for the 46 defense.

Please make one of Barry Sanders. Outside of Marino, he was my first thought when this series started. He was one of the greatest running backs who not only ended his career early but deserved so much better of a team to end it with.

I think that he was *one of* the best because he was so talented, but Sanders has a trait which a lot of great players who never won titles have: half of his carries went for 30 yards, the other half for a loss. It doesn't always show up in his stats, but one of the reasons why some running backs play in a way that is conducive to winning is because of their consistent ability to pick up yards while running the clock.
Barry Sanders did not do this. Look up the drop in odds of a team scoring a TD when they take a QB sack versus not. It's about 17% when not and 9% when they do. RBs getting tackled deep behind the line have a similar effect.

Emmitt Smith never had that issue (had one of the greatest olines ever) and he never ran for 2,000 in a season like Sanders.

Usually, any professional player isn’t once the achilles ruptures. Look back at all the legends in any sport that had their achilles ruptured and it was usually the end of the road soon after
I see what you're saying but when he came back in 1994 he was incredible and carried the Dolphins to the AFC East title, beat Montana and the Chiefs in the WC, had that amazing 473 5TD game in Week 1 and lead the Dolphins back against the Jets in of the most famous games in NFL history, the "Fake Spike".
I disagree, he was really good that first year afterwards, but he was an aging player and it didn't last.

Marino is one of my all-time favs. As a Pitt fan, I always thought he seemed to really struggle in poor weather. Almost all his poor games were in rain and/or snow. I think it affected his amazing release. Still, if my Steelers had drafted him, they likely win at least 2 Super Bowls. Heartbreaking.

It’s kind of sad how history is favorable to the guys who won in the end than the guys like Dan Marino and Dan Fouts who had all the talent in the world to be great but either by a cruel twist of fate or just running into better organized teams they never are able to take their teams further than where they ended up. I'm a Bills fan but always admired how great Marino was. Whether it was Marino's fault or not, in the NFL (even now but especially back then) if you can't run, you can't win. Same reason Elway didn't get a ring till he got TD
I disagree. John Elway was always an athlete. It just that Denver discovered Terrell Davis along with getting the complimentary pieces to boot. But make no mistake about it. John was the center piece of that team and the owner at the time made sure he had one last shot at it. And he got the ring ✌️
Yeah Denver had a subpar running game for most of Elway's career but it was the defense that really stank up the field in Elway's early Super Bowl loses. In 86 he kept them in the game until the third quarter before the Denver did fell apart and got some very unlucky breaks (The Bavaro TD pass comes to mind) In 87 by all rights they shouldn't have even been there since Cleveland had that game won before the "fumble". And once again it was the defense that just got completely torched by Washington and a no name running back that had one great moment and a journeyman quarterback that got hot at just the right moment. By the time Davis arrived in Denver they had also done a lot to fix their problems on the defensive side of the ball as well and it made an enormous difference in those two Super Bow victories in the 90s. You have to have some offense but you absolutely can not win a championship with a substandard defense.
Which brings us to the Bills who by all rights should have at least beaten New York, since that team had a great defense and offense. The loss to Washington was equally shocking. However the loss to Dallas wasn't surprising because they really ran into a buzz saw on both sides of the game when they played those Cowboys teams.
Do not compare Turtle Marino with Elway for god sake

As a Jaguars fan, I don’t know how to feel about my team destroying the Dolphins in the playoffs. The 50% of me is happy but the other 50% of me is sad he didn’t get a ring. Marino is one of the best of all time.

Nice of you to say seeing as crapping the bed VS the Patriots cost Marino his one real shot at getting a ring. A Fins-Bears Super Bowl in '85 would've been epic and the highest rated TV show in the history of humankind to this day.

Crazy draft Elway 5 Super Bowls. Kelly 4 Super Bowls. Marino 1 Super Bowl. Eason 1 Super Bowl. 11 Super Bowls out of 1 class. The win percentage is not good but the NFC back then was so powerful. I remember as a kid hoping the AFC would win just 1! I was a Broncos fan and would have loved to see any AFC team win it. Amazing memories watching these guys play!
'85 hurts most. Literally dropped it against the Pats in the championship game, who were in turn humiliated by the Bears in SB20, it wasn't even a contest. 'Fins only team to beat them in regular season in the classic game at the Orange Bowl. Fins v Bears could have been the best superbowl ever, whichever team won it. After 85, I could never get why Shula couldn't seem to put together a decent defence, after all his previous success had been based on elite defences.
Being a life long Dolphins fan it's difficult to see things any other way when concerning Dan Marino, however I always found it somewhat flattering that when the subject of your favorite football team came up, no matter what team the others in the conversation backed, they'd always speak of Marino with such adoration and enthusiasm. It was like every football fan in the world was a fan of Marino. Winning season or losing season, Super Bowl ring or not, I've never talked to a person who's eyes didn't light up when speaking of Marino. He was not an "underdog", he was a player who's ability and talent transcended the game itself and was probably viewed by most as being an individual master of an art form more than a showpiece member of a legendary squad.
Another name that was spoken with the same universal adoration was Barry Sanders.
Barry Sanders was one of my favorite players not Dolphins,
Dan Marino and Barry Sanders are just likeable guys.
Even if you hate the Lions and the Dolphins it’s impossible to hate on Marino and Sanders.

I'm a Bears fan and I remember the pounding they gave to us in 1985, and still, Marino is one of my favorites players. He always seemed to carry himself with a lot of class, win or lose.
It is a shame he didn't win one, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he was an outstanding QB.

From the time Marino was 25 to when he was 32, his prime years, the Dolphins missed the playoffs 6 of those 8 years (5 of 7 if you don't want to count the year he missed most of with injury).
Marino was a great QB with strong arm, not very mobile, but mobile enough. Great WRs, but really never great RBs. Defense was usually Miami's weaknesses. His early years, Miami owned the AFC East and only had to worry about the NY Jets. Mid-late '80s. Occasionally the Indy Colts and NE Pats. They loss to a very good SF team in the Super Bowl in 1984 The next year they were favored to get back to the Super Bowl but were upset by the Patriots in the playoffs. Then during most of Marino's peak years, the late '80s - mid '90s. Bad timing! The Buffalo Bills became very good. Much more complete team (offense, defense, special teams). The Bills own the AFC East from the late '80s - mid '90s and were elite. Miami could never get over the hump in the playoffs and normally were outed by the Bills. The Bills owned Miami during those years . By the late '90s/early '00s the Bills and Dolphins both got a little older and faded a little. Younger teams like the Patriots, Colts and Jets got better those teams started winning the AFC East. The Dolphins and Bills window had closed by the early '00s
Yes running game sucked and defense not very good at all vs the better offenses in the league at that team. Also their coaches needed some new blood. Just bad luck on another team he gets his superbowl.

The one thing the Dolphins still hold over the Bills though is that they have two Lombardi trophies, while the Bills still have none.
Been a long time for both teams. Miami last won a SB back in the '70s. While the Bills last won a championship (AFL) back in the '60s, Pre-SB years.
Some day it will happen for both teams.

This sounds like how Aaron Rodger's last few years in Green Bay is going to turn out. Bad defense that allows historical runs against them. A GM that doesn't draft the team's needs. A overall team mentality that says "we're good enough" and never makes it to another superbowl. Hope I'm wrong.
Thank you. Perfect description of both their careers! Organizations that were glad enough to sell tickets. Take in heaps of $$$ on Jersey sales and lots of prime time games because of the star qb. But no way would the Organization spend or go the extra mile to put together a good to great defense or major help on offense. 😔. The dolphins caused Marino not to win ! Bottom line!

Johnny Gleason best not greatest. Brady has greatness through his championships but he was nowhere near as good at QB as Marino.

Miami legend. I remember watching him every Sunday growing up in South Florida
One of the biggest reasons is throughout his entire prime he played in the same division as the Buffalo Bills who from 1988 to 1993 was one of the most dominant teams in the league.
As a Jets fan living in Florida ; Dan Marino was a constant thorn in my side. However, his talent and will to win won my respect. I'm a huge fan and enjoyed the rivalry.
Imagine having Don Shula and Jimmy Johnson as your coaches and still not winning a Super Bowl.

Excellent vid! I remember 1983's QB draft and as a life-long Broncos fan, I always appreciated Marino's excellence and besting of Elway in most meetings. Marino doesn't need the Lomardi trophy to be labeled a top three QB in NFL history.
