    MKS Gen-L V2.0 is the best choice out of these for a 3D printer board. MKS Gen-L V2.0 adds the Trinamic jumpers for SPI and Uart communication compared to V1.0. Easy upgrade to 32bit with MKS Sgen-L, which has the same size and connector layout. The MKS boards have more exposed pins than the Bigtreetech, useful for level sensors like a BLtouch. Of course the Bigtreetech can run Marlin 1.x. All shown boards have the same CPU, only the pin layout will vary slightly

    I subscribed to your channel because I wanted to get into 3d printing and was considering the v1.1 Pro (Double Z + 3 extruders = No brainer) and you did a great job of explaining a lot of details .
    But there are other factors to 3d printing like motor drivers (UART vs SPI ... SPI wins ), nozzle size , filament size , extruder type , structural integrity of the printer frame that play a big role in printing size , time , and choosing the right printer frame.
    If I get into printing I will definitely not buy a printer to gut it and change everything out but rather buy a frame and add the parts I want. A bit of work and figuring out but doable and costs around the same as what a similarly sized stock primitive Creality printer would cost new .
    If I do get a frame put together I will build a cabinet with glass or polycarbonate sides around it to serve two purposes . Support the main frame and an inclosure to preserve heat and contain toxic fumes and create an air purifying system within .
    By supporting the main frame I hope to attain faster print speeds .
    Although Marlin boasts 6 extruders , colour mixing , and tool changing , I wonder why boards have not been developed with 6 extruders to attain endless colour mixing possibilities , and no one in the Marlin community was able to successfully demonstrate colour mixing although it was achievable on the 8 bit Rambo Motherboard .www.reprap.org/wiki/Repetier_Color_Mixing
    Better hardware without advancement in software and support doesn't amount to much.

      You can add a shield with up to four additional steppers. I avoid the topic only because making a video with that many steppers would confuse almost everyone in steps to follow and available pins to use on the board.

    like most people, I notice that people(at our forum in the Netherlands)
    prefer to stay with the Arduino IDE software
    ! (then no better and faster board!)
    I hope that there will be another board that can work with the Arduino IDE again, but can also work with all kinds of stepsticks and with jumpers,
    PAY ATTENTION!!! stepsticks who are of course NOT integrated in the board!!!
    and prefer not to have that mess with software please!?
    Arduino IDE is good enough!!!
    BUT! of course with faster chips! and that can also work great in the Arduino IDE!
    friendly greetings from The Netherlands!

    Hi Ed, thanks for the videos. IMHO, and according to my FabLab experience and common 3D printers repairs, none of the shown boards are suitable for newbies. Let's explain why. First, any board with pluggable stepper drivers represents a useless complexity for the newcomer : driver selection, orientation, jumpers setup, vref current calculation (depending sometimes of resistors value), vref setup depending of drivers (CW, CCW), and do on. The newbie needs integrated drivers boards, like SKR mini, Duet Maestro, and so on. Second, and for the same reason, microcontrollers with shields are outdated. Actually the RAMPS is outdated, whatever its version, and to is overpriced. It's connectors are not secured and reversible which is a possible issue for the beginner. Some connectors are surrounded by other components in the middle of the board and it's definitely not easy to select the right pins and manage wires. On the other hand, a shield contributes to the microcontroller overheat. Modern boards have the connectors comprehensively labeled and distributed all around the board, with good ventilation and wire management as perks. I used a lot RAMPS shields on early Reprap printers, but all this belongs to the 3D printing museum. It can't be decently recommended nowadays, except for nostalgia's. It's a no sense for newcomers.

    • @EdwardBraiman
      @EdwardBraiman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well as a beginner I made several of these mistakes, thus the tutorials. As a beginner I might be a little confused later on if I purchased equipment and then found out I was unable to upgrade steppers. My thought process is the beginner wishing to learn, otherwise we would advise them to buy a printers full built.

    • @axelSixtySix
      @axelSixtySix 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EdwardBraiman I understand your point. You suppose the newcomer may need to upgrade steppers. It may be true for some people, especially if they get the wrong card/drivers. Actually, an all in one 32 bits board like the SKR mini cost less than 4*DRV8825 and contains all what you could expect, including the ability to use external drivers of any kind. What I note from our FabLab members, is only experts with custom applications need special drivers. We do not recommend/use shields or plug in drivers anymore. Whatever the firmware. We note a better understanding from people, especially childs, and less issues or hardware crashes.

    • @EdwardBraiman

    Beginner? To what? 3d printing or electronics? What did we learn? What is a ramp? Which is best for beginners? This is why people pull their hair out trying to troubleshoot printers. You have to make 3d printers/electronics your life in order to keep one printing well. Just venting my frustration.

      Tell me about it. As a 23 year Professional IT Admin it's been way more than I was anticipating. I recently accidentally left my Octoprint server left on when clipping a wire to my DIY UBL Probe and fried my RAMPS 1.4, Arduino and LCD screen! Now I'm upgrading to the RAMPS 1.6+ and let's hope I don't make that mistake again. Hoping my TMC2208 Stepper Drivers are still good. Was a semi-expensive small mistake on my part. I was pissed when I realized what had happened! Puff the magic smoke everywhere!
