Regarding your statement that durability and reliability are on a sliding scale… Programming the phone to not work with replacement parts does not make it more reliable just more profitable.
100%
Real
Framework laptops completely disprove that statement too.
@@techtonik25 they were probably targeting framework with that sliding statement, and while that might be true, their practices of serializing the shit out of everything has nothing to do with durability vs reparability.
They do that for your safety apparently 😂
I'm actually really glad to see that there's a lot of comments calling this propaganda from before Louis made a video

Just dont watch 🤷
Nah that's unhinged ☠️
Louis Rossmann summed it up perfectly.
This is not journalism. This is Apple’s marketing and PR.
I dont feel like rossman's video was targeted at specifically MKBHD's video; it just uses it as a way to reach a larger audience. Most of his points are directly against APPLE, NOT mkbhd. While mkbhd never flat out attacks apple, he has a job. he cant just go out and criticize people who are giving him really good content. idk man, i feel like you are a bit too brainwashed by rossman and just hear a guy saying another guy is wrong, and just go with that.
@@LightModeContradiction Rossman directly mentioned this video, it's even linked in the description. And yes, you don't need to attack, but you have a lot of decent questions available, it's not like MKBHD won't be able to buy new phones to review them or anything. He is not a journalist, but even LTT has asked better questions than these.
It's a commercial
@@LightModeContradiction he literally names him directly in the video and also links this video specifically in the description.
@@LightModeContradiction Yes, he can criticize Apple or any other company. He doesn’t do that because not doing it makes him money. That’s not a job of a journalist. That’s a job of a marketing or PR person.
Journalism is saying what someone else does not want to be said. Everything else is public relations.
Influencers don’t want to be called journalists because it takes the responsibility of them. Gives them justification for doing what companies pay them to do (directly or indirectly). It makes them money, it gives companies a easy way to control the message and their image but it’s just PR. It’s not professional journalism or even good critique.
With big power comes big responsibility… as cheese as it sounds - it’s true. He is one of the biggest tech TH-camrs in the world. An expert in his field. A millionaire. He knows what he’s doing and he knows that Apple is using him to greenwash their image.
He can afford to be better.
We should expect or even demand him to.
Do you remember the Samsung Galaxy S5 that was IP67 rated with a removable battery? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
I have samsung xcover 5. It also has a headphone jack. When I had XCover 4, it once fell into toilet without me noticing, were there for about an hour and when I found it it still worked after I left it open to dry out for about a day or two. It only stopped working because the changing connector got damaged years later.
How dare you bring up the last great phone Samsung made!
I'm writing this on a Tab Active2 from 2017. The latest Tab Active5 from this year still has removable battery, headphone jack and the IP68 rating.
It is a little chunky and heavier but it can be repaired.
I had an S5 until about 2 months ago. They shut the network down so I had to get a new one :(
My phone, the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro from 2022 has a replacable battery and IP68 :)

Eh, he's probably going to leave the comments on tbh. I'm sure Marquees is aware he fudged here.
I absolutely agree there was LOTS of room for push back here, and Louis Rossman was right to call this out.
However I think a lot of people are acting in hysteria against Marquees. Searching "right to repair" on TH-camr literally brings up a video of Marquees criticizing Apple on this exact topic.
😂👀👀 I'm here
So you joined the Apple PR team
"Joined"? This channel has been an Apple ad from the start. That's the only reason I'm subscribed, to be notified when Apple launches a new product.
Dude he said at first place that he was "invited" to Apple testing lab
he even said in video that he don't know why Apple do dropping test that failed everytime
and what did you think he will ask Apple about repair?
repair shops aren't asking you to make your phones 'more repairable', they just want the spare parts and no bs serialized parts
and no dumb program to lock phone ul after it detect the phone being opened.
And you know what that would be? Green and better for the environment! 🤯
@@khulhucthulhu9952 you misunderstood, Apple's aim is to go GREEN as in MONEY, not environment 😂
Or at least make it possible for an average user to pair the serialized parts (thinking about it makes me realize again how unnecessary serialized parts are)
That Rossmann's critique was brutal.
not at all... it was spot on.... I love mkbhd but this time he messed up
It was deserved. MKBHD is a shill leading 19 MILLION people to financial waste 💀

He killed them in the first 4 minutes, but he kept going and going.

The only thing that matters the most is the last one. They give you money.
The marketing of "durability and repairability" being on opposite sliders is objectively wrong. You just gotta look at the automotive industry where some of the most durable cars are also the most repairable. Even within the same tech-space, software locking components which Apple does is another great example of this being not true.
Nono coding the screen and speaker to the iphone so you cant repair it is super important to durability!!!
(Joking ofcourse)
At 7:15 Marques says it FEELS like there's a sliding scale between durability and repairability. Increasing one, decreases the other.... Well, that FEELS like a false dichotomy. I think a far more accurate view, is that Apple's bottom line grows more from marketing phones as submersible, than it does as repairable. Marques can do better.
By this logic, buying an old Toyota Land Cruiser would be totally insane. This is probably the easiest car to repair so it must be breaking all the time!
Fact check, it's not. Easy to repair, durable and almost never breaks down.

True 😂
Lmao he's bobbing for apples
If Apple made cars, if you got a puncture, you'd have to replace it.
- remove the glued fender
- use a special key to unscrew the rim
- for this you would have to replace half of the suspension
- and finally, after collecting everything, it would turn out that not everything works as it should, because the replaced parts are not from this specific car, but were taken from another one intended for parts
Also, you have to swap the entire transmission and axle because apple won't just sell the tire on its own
Also when you replace the brake pads the car will "complain" that it cannot verify if it's an "original" part, even if that new brake pad came from ANOTHER Apple Car!

Finally a video showing MKBHD groveling to his masters.
The whole repairability vs. durability thing is fine and dandy, but it’s kind of a cop-out argument by Apple. Nobody in the repair community is complaining about waterproofing seals making it harder to replace the battery. They’re complaining about Apple actively punishing repair in software using e.g., serialized parts etc.
The real scale for apple is repairability vs profitability.
@@ytskt YES. I don't get why people are trying their best to kinda put in a moderate manner what this company does to it's costumers. Even people that seems to know about their anti-repairability practices do this shit. It's about profit, and that's it!
I get kinda triggered when I hear about serialized parts. I remember my iPhone 8’s taptic vibration motor need replaced one time, so I ordered a new one and did just that only to find out that it didn’t work because the vibration motor is serialized to each iPhone, starting with iPhone 8 (iPhone 7 did not require serialization and uses the same taptic engine, so I thought I was in the clear)
I will say that I am at least responsible for having a moderator on ifixit point out that you’d need a separate, expensive machine to copy over the old vibration motor’s information to the new one, and only repair shops really have access to that sort of thing. I would have rather them put that at the top of the page in case a DIYer like me will know right off the bat whether something like that is even worth doing, but it is what it is.
How does using proprietary screws and software locking replacement parts make the phone more durable?
My question exactly. They don't have to use proprietary screws and they don't have to software lock individual parts to it's phone. And the phone will still be durable and repairable🤔🤨😒
I'm pretty sure 'proprietary' screws are just to dissuade the casual idiot tinkering with crap from disassembling their phone at home and making a hash of it and bringing it back to Apple to complain that their phone doesn't work. But it's trivial to buy a pentalobe screwdriver now. If Apple were seriously concerned with people opening their phones, they'd be coming up with wild and wacky new designs every year.
Only mild argument with the software locking. I think it makes sense to do it to make sure you're not getting parts that will carry malware or whatever (it takes almost no space to do that, which is why you're asked if you trust the cable being plugged into your phone), but they don't provide any good way to get replacement parts at a reasonable price, or re-use old parts from verified old Apple devices, which is BS. They should make that whole pipeline easier.
A proprietary physical asset, such as a screw or an adhesive, can be designed to reduce weight, provide strength in specific areas of the unit (the screw), and create a specific balance. A very low-profile head that can withstand a certain torque rating and has a specific break force at the shank or threading, may require a certain type of drive (flat/Philips, etc.) designed to withstand both the drive force during assembly and and the combination of forces during use, such as strike and vibration, and withstand other factors such as temperature ratings, galvanization resistance, electrical resistance, and so forth. So, in some applications, a custom design can lead to certain goals, and at Apple and other tech companies, a few goals can be better met with custom designs, such as material savings and weight savings.
@@lloydmwinga5628 exactly. the durability vs repairability being "on a sliding scale" is completely wrong. i own a 10 year old Lenovo laptop that still runs like day 1 after being dropped multiple times and i can take it all apart in 15 minutes.
Marques is way off point here.
If you can easily get a screw driver for it, how 'proprietary' is it? Also, when dealing with super small parts, the old Phillips head is not the best solution as it strips pretty easily. Also, as stated by someone else, a lot of easy to clear hurtles are to keep simpletons from breaking their phones - like some dope that wants to take a panel off to see what is inside without realizing they're just destroyed the water seal. Having a tiny hurtle to clear, keeps out the vast majority of people who have no idea what they're doing.
Repairability is not at odds with durability. Ask the old Maytag repairman. Profits and planed obsolescense are at odds with repairability. And so is Apple.
Exactly that statement makes zero sense. You know what makes something durable? Being able to replace the one broken part easily
For anyone wondering, 1 month after release, we are at 130k likes and 65k dislikes on this video, people are not happy and for good reasons.

My thoughts exactly when I heard that argument.
Apple's statements as always are marketuing Bs
I mean they kind of are, but not to the extent that Apple tries to make it seem like. They've shown to do stuff that at the end of the day will make them more money no matter how much it fucks over the consumer
Or just look at old ThinkPads
First of all, framework laptops are my dream laptops. However, their built quality is definitely subpar compered to apple, mostly because of the modular design.
But they are more than repairable, as i said above, they are modular. The complete opposite end of the scale, while still retaining passable build quality. Apple could do even better if ghey wanted to.
7:06 Phone that doesn't have its parts coded so it can't be changed isnt less durale. Phone that doesn't use 15 different screw head types isn't less durable. Durability doesn't excuse Apples anti-repair practices.
Say it louder so the people in the back can hear you!
you're absolutely right. i really like mkbhd so i wanna give him the benefit of the doubt, and think that he probably just wants to stay on apple's invite list, and would have otherwise asked way smarter questions.
Can we stop pretending that people who repair phones only have one screwdriver? That's more a packaging thing than a durability thing, anyway.
I’d imagine each screw has its use otherwise why isn’t there just one for everything. Also Apple could just save money if there wasn’t a reason to use different ones
An argument can be made here: Is it possible that Apple is deliberately making it hard to repair their phone so that people go to Apple to repair them, because as we just saw; It's such a "technical'" aspect of building a phone from scratch in such a way so as to make it durable, that to allow lower skilled, off-the-street repairmen to replace internal parts may lower the overall experience and potentially lifespan of the device?
Think of it in this context - If you're wealthy, and you buy a Ferrari. When it needs to be serviced or repaired, wouldn't you rather send it into the official Ferrari garage rather than some random mom-and-pop shop? The mechanics at Ferrari have been specifically trained and have years of experience in Ferrari motors and gear boxes, so they know what they're doing.
I'm also not saying that Ferrari wouldn't 'scam' you by overcharging because I'm not talking from a financial point of view, I'm talking from a technical one.

Durability and reparability are NOT opposed. They are orthogonal. The inifinitely durable product may never NEED repair but that doesn't mean it has to be difficult to repair.
Thank you! Underrated comment!
give example?
@@youssefmohammed5456 Any Toyota 🙂
@@youssefmohammed5456 here is an example for you. Pentalobe screw was only intended to make iphone repairs more difficult. It provides zero improvement to durability.
For products generally, sure. For phones, no. They are conditionally and variably opposed. Water resistance and repairability are definitely opposed (though not completely; low manufacturing tolerance, for example, improves water resistance without hurting repairability).
There is no such thing as a perfectly repairable, perfectly durable phone. Those are engineering objectives that do in fact conflict.
It's also a mistake to say that phones are hard to repair only because of durability trade-offs. Pair pairing doesn't improve durability, for example.
Why is he being a spineless yes-man here?

I mean idk you're the one that made a comment only exactly after Rossman told you how to complain about it like a lawyer telling his client how to act in the court room.
Tbf MKBHD isn't as knowledgeable about Apple Repairs like Rossman. I think the biggest critique of Apple from Rossman is their new repairing policy in which 3rd party repair stores have to report to apple and only buy their products - I don't think MKBHD is aware of this. Also Rossman complained about various technical issues like the CPU pin being next to a high-voltage pin, crappy hinges on the macbook, etc which Apple doesn't care about (or are deliberately ignoring for planned obsolescence). Again, MKBHD probably isn't aware of these issues. Of course this video is a PR piece for Apple but it's not like MKBHD is deliberately trying to shut down right to repair.
You're right, that's why 'Parts Pairing' made iPhones so durable, they're trying their darnedest to push toward unrepairability end of this imaginary "slider of repairability/durability".
Apple OBVIOUSLY wants to stop black market for parts, hence “parts pairing”.
It's not about black market though. They can do parts pairing of their own devices in a manner that tracks stolen phones. They already can and do do that.
They just need to not break your existing parts when an unknown part is added.

Marq, I have an idea for you. Your next client can be Intel you can visit their test lab. After that you can explain us how they fuckup with 13 and 14th gen in order to safe the polar bears. How this is because they wish the best possible performance and durability for us!
I like how the water ingress testing equipment requires distilled water. It's the impurities in water that makes it corrosive or leave residue that cause shorts, so testing with distilled water wouldn't cause problems with circuits. It doesn't even conduct.
Exactly!
due to all water from different sources being different it would be hard for them to test it. and its a rating not a gurantee. Water resistant not waterproof. it is fine imo
The test is ‘Does water get in?’ Not if it stains
They're testing one variable, water ingress. They're not testing whether or not components inside will break AFTER the water ingresses. How conductive the water is is irrelevant to this test.
They should have a bathroom where the engineers pee on the phones, another where they pour beer on them, etc.
I like how Apple drops the "safe for the environment" bomb whenever somebody raises an issue
Apple...You already saving environment by buying Apple products 😉
That was a BS response. It gave as an example how before, when batteries were easily replaceable, phones would get water damage. Bruh, the iPhone never has had any replaceable battery and it got water damaged until 2015, and it was just as bad to replace batteries as it is now.
His argument doesn't hold up in the sense that there are things that wear down by getting used, no matter how much "durable" you make it, so sacrificing repairability is always a bad deal. You will never have a device that's so reliable it will never need any service. That's a falacy.
And it's been more than proven that Apple doesn't hinder repairability because of quality standards or W/E bullshit, but because they want to keep control of their own devices. If your lid angle sensor on your macbook breaks or becomes uncalibrated, they don't want you to go to a technician that knows how to repair it. They want you to go to their apple service and spend as much $$$ as they want, or maybe buy a brand new device for a little bit more (now go ahead and tell me how that is safe for the environment). Or push you to get their Apple care plus service.
i mean its true tho, the less shit to throw away, the better it is for the environment.
@bluenexus1212 yes, but it's false that you can't have repairability with durability. They could make things more repairable without compromising durability at all, yet they choose not.
The more holes and ways to get into a device the more space for shit to go wrong and water and bs to get into
From Escabar phone to this
You do live long enough to see yourself become a villain
ah, so mkbhd finally became an apple mouth piece. Effects of inflation I guess..
i did love the repairability vs durability argument like, it completely missed the point of what make iphones borderline unrepairable... PARTS PAIRING. Yeah water resistant makes phones harder to disasemble and change parts but what makes apple the bigger ass on industry is that now that you changed the screen the camera wont work the way it did before.
100%. This is somewhere I have to strongly disagree with Marques, and to the extent that I think he got a bit starry-eyed visiting Apple HQ. It's very rare from him, but I think he sipped the kool-aid on this one.
Exactly, parts pairing as well as apple's predatory practices of only allowing some places access to parts
The thing is to me, the majority of repairs on phones are either done by people at home or repair people like you find in shopping centres/malls that are most likely not using genuine parts. If you take your iPhone to an Apple store for repair, then there is a damn good chance it will work like new. No different to buying a car. No car manufacture will give you any sort of warranty on a new car using inferior parts done by yourself at home.
What I got out of this, is that Apple's plan is to make their products as durable as possible so no repairs are required. Breaking the glass is exempt, as glass is glass & glass can break.
You wrong... GALAXY S5 was the really the peak of Samsung Design.. it got IP68 but also completely easily repairable..

yeah right? the scale that he made up is bs, it feels weird to me that Marques would believe durability and repairability are polar opposites
the same happens with cars, there are car engines that for a mechanic are a pain in the back to repair, but for the engineers was the optimum way to design the engine and engineering wise is a good engine, but a pain to repair
His comments completely ignore the encoding internal parts so they can't be replaced without being reprogrammed by apple. That aspect of the war on "the right to repair" has nothing to do with durability.
@@esteban4983 it really does depend what it is. like in a larger form factor like the imacs they used to make it made no sense why they made it so hard to repair. and also there is like thinkpads just existing that can have their cpu changed and have been going for 20+ years.
