    Thanks for the review. I am making plans to get a new fishing boat in the near future and I cant imagine needing a boat over 16'. My last boat was a 14' river jon, I feel the need to go up in size to fish two folks comfortably.

      my dad and I are both 5'10 (I'm 14 though) and we're pretty light I'm around 125 lbs and my dad is 140 lbs so a 12 ft Jon boat does the trick. my dad's 15 ft skiff can allow my dad and his 2 big friends (250 lbs and 350 lbs) pretty comfortably. just my dad and I is a joke lol

    Yamaha F25 EFI is still the best choice, if you are looking for reliability and a long lasting motor. My friends Yamaha F25 has over 5'000 HRS on it and runs perfectly. I am happy with mine too!

    Nice video. Thumbs up. My boat will be fiberglass 13,5 ft with a casting deck and trolling motor in the front. I really wanted that Yamaha, but finally I ordered Merc 20. Still Yamaha is heavier by around 10kg, so you can feel that already. So that was the main reason. Second thing, that in Poland there's over 1 thousand$ price difference between these 2 models. I agree 100% with that statement regarding weight to power ratio. If my boat would be 1 ft longer I would go with Yamaha.

    Hi, according to my research on the topic of Mercury. Tohatsu manufactures Mercury motors from 40HP down to 2.2hp. up to 180 000 units for Mercury/year. The early Mercury FourStroke engines were originally manufactured jointly with Yamaha ; Mercury provided the block, crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods, while Yamaha produced the cylinder heads for the 50hp. ... Both models were completed with mid-sections and gearcases. Mercury's agreement with Yamaha ended in March 2006.

    Tohatsu and Merc 20s and 15s are both made by tohatsu. Same displacement (333cc), if you look at the side by side the power heads are the same as well as the lower unit. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, Tohatsus are some great little engines. Yamahas are a unique in-house design. Pretty much all engines out there 9.9 and under are all made by Tohatsu.

    i have a 9.9 merc and a 9.9 tohatsu. tohatsu makes the base power heads. (block crank rods pistons cam head intake manifold) and there are variations from year to year and model to model. from there everthing else is just enough different you cant swap parts. i suspect many parts are made to different specs by tohatsu for mercury. and mercury makes some of their own. the ignition system carb and charging systems are completely different.

    Thank you for another cool vid. I think the stuttering with the 9" pitch is because of the rev limiter(?)

    • @btv1676
      @btv1676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree. Running a smaller pitch will increase rpm at less throttle. So you may be hitting the Rev limit. for break in they may say 'half throttle' but what they want is not exceeding some rpm under load, at half throttle with the stock prop. You're adding a variable and then half throttle is not the same. I'd be careful with the rpm during break in.

    Anyone who wants a general idea on what prop to use for thier application. Can use this equation. It's basically the rpm ÷ gear ratio x pitch, and ÷ then divide by 1056. So if I know a 9 pitch is 6000 rpm on my engine and I want more speed, I reduce my rpm 200 rpm because for every pitch up you reduce it that amount to 5800 ÷ 2.08 x 10 pitch for speed ÷ 1056 = I get 26.40 mph. My engine gets full power at 5500 rpm so know I don't want anything higher than a 10 pitch or it probably will bog under heavy load and probably won't plane.

    I compared a 2 stroke 18 tohatsu to a 4 stroke 18 tohatsu on the same boat ,and got 1.5 mph faster with the 2 stroke, so I bought a 25 2 stroke Yamaha that pushed my 17 ft lowe bass boat with 2 guys, and all my equipment at 22.5 mph. I am happy, but the carbs have to be in sync, or it will pop and idle bad. It is a 2007 100 to 1 mix. Just changed oil seals on the bottom unit that were leaking. Over all it is a good motor.

    I have an old 1969 V-hull aluminum boat, with a 1969 Evinrude 25hp electric start 2 stroke motor. It runs okay, but my motor doesn't charge the battery. Plus, the motor isn't reliable. If I've run to a couple of different places to fish and shut it off for just a few minutes it doesn't want to restart. It fires, but doesn't catch and run. I have to sit and wait 30 minutes or more before trying to restart because I don't want to run the battery down. I'm old and pull starting that motor kills me. So, I'm looking to buy a new Yamaha like your 25hp. On a fixed income I'm not sure if I can afford it. If you don't mind me asking, how much did yours cost?

    me personally I love the new 2022 mercury 9.9. weighs only 80 pounds and with a load could get a 15 ft boat boat on plane. we tested it on my dad's 15 ft skiff and it just barely got it on plane. on my 12 ft Jon boat with a full load it'll run at 22 mph. just one person with all the gear about 25 mph. just one person no gear it might push 29-30 (we usually have around 200 pounds of gear)

    Question: I am looking a the 20hp with electric start and power tilt (not power trim). My understanding is that it cannot be adjusted when your going full speed (the cylinder isn't strong enough). So its not really considered power trim. But you can adjust the angle of the motor at idle or low speeds. Is this correct?

    • @stevenkunka8961
      @stevenkunka8961 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The power tilt will not work while underway. If you try to ‘trim’ it at speed, the cylinder makes an awful noise. It’s nice to be able to tilt it to the ideal angle when desired and when at the sandbar.

    Need your help.... I bought a beautiful True Kit Discovery 4.0 meter by 1.8 meter inflatable caterman. It is rated up to 20 HP short shaft. My local area dealer is Yamaha. He is helping me find a 20 hp EFI electric start, manual tilt Yamaha. It is around 126 lbs with 432cc displacement. 1st question. Some of the other Competitor competitors like mercury Suzuki to Hotsy etc. have a lesser displacement 20 hp engines but are quite a bit lighter around 100 pounds compared to the Yamaha I believe Mercury also has power tilt in addition to electric start I’ll be at a lesser cubic centimeter should I stick with the Yamaha 432CC although heavier with manual till I inflatable boat let me know your thoughts since I am in the ordering phase now

      Just curious what you ended up with as I'm about to order that same boat and shopping for engines now. Yamaha or Tohatsu 20. Wondering if the larger displacement Yamaha helps you get on plane sooner either heavier loads despite the extra engine weight. Also, how do you like the true kit?

    Just wanted to clarify what you said about the propeller pitch. A small pitch helps with holeshot and acceleration while sacrificing top speed and vice versa as you go up in pitch. Did you say that for your application, the opposite is the case?

    • @GYPSY400
      @GYPSY400 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes a small pitch helps with holeshot, and a large pitch helps top speed. But In some cases, to high a pitch keeps a motor from reaching its power band... if you can't rev up to the recommended rpm, the motor won't put out the advertised horsepower.

    Brain tickler; I have a 2002 Alumacraft Trophy 185, while it is not a tiny boat, I’m still trying to figure out what kicker I want to run.
    With me living in PA, 90% of the bodies of water I fish are 20hp max restricted. While my boat has a Yamaha F115 on it, I need a kicker to fish these lakes. I toss the idea around a 15hp or 20hp Mercury EFI, but in reality, what speed am I looking to get out of it? I know I probably won’t plane my boat with a 20hp, but compared to my old man’s 2020 Trophy 185 with a Yamaha 9.9HT, he’s getting 6mph tops… I’d like to get more than 6-7 mph. Maybe around 10-12mph with a 20hp?
    I’m using this motor strictly for point A to point B travel, I’m not looking to troll with this motor, so I don’t have to get sub 1mph idle for trolling.

    Its my understanding that Tohatsu manufactures Suzuki and Mercury engines up to certain h.p. but to Mercury and Suzuki specs. So its actually not a Tohatsu engine, just built in their plant. btw, I run a 2017, 20hp Tohatsu on a refurbed byme , 1984 14 ft Smokercraft Big Fisherman with 5/8 plywood floor with 2x4 sub floor frames, carry 6 gallon gas jug at all times, usually full,and plenty of gear. The boat makes 25 mph with 11 p aluminum prop right at 6140 rpm. Tohatsu wants 5400-6100 operating range for this motor, so with the 11p its spot on with my usual gear. Im sure I could turn a 12p and stay in operating range but not really interested in increasing top end speed. To anyone who's never owned or spent time on a small tin boat, rent one or borrow one for a weekend, you'll be hooked. Tin for the Win.
