Everything you said about that set up is completely true....I've worked on a lot of outboards in my day, and yes 4 strokes are nice...but these older 2 strokes (especially Yamaha) are just dead reliable. I'll take reliability over noise, smoke, and MPG any day on my smaller boats....big boats, the 4s are definitely nice to have. I have a Yamaha 25 and 70, and both have been amazing. Cool video bro.

Hi, really enjoy your channel. I have 2 of these motors and agree completely they are the best. My 2004 has a 100:1 sticker on it and that’s what I use. I recently saw the identical motor (2009)on Craigslist and the photos clearly show a 50:1 sticker?
I've got a 2010 Yamaha 9.9 in excellent condition are there any horsepower upgrade options for this one? Any info would be appreciated for the T9.9GPLR or similar model from 2010. Thanks for any help. Cool video.
If you adjust the butterfly flap which you pointed too and said to mark so you know where to set back to. Well if you adjust a tiny bit you can take a bit of slack out of it helping to open the flap an extra bit for a little bit more air. Just don’t go too far cause it will idle very high but there is a bit of slack in 99% of them motors have the exact same motor and setup, great video btw well explained 👌
Importing and selling 2 strokes were banned in Europe in 2007 as well. The Yamaha Enduros are sold and manufactured only for Asian markets if I remember correctly.
Would be more helpful if you had a 9.9hp reed cage for comparison. Ebay sells the same reed cage for both the 15 hp and the 9.9. How do you explain that ?
@tricked tins 1. Is there any other part that needs to be changed along with the Carb? 2. Does the carb swap stress out any other F9.9 4 Stroke component? 3. How's the long term performance after the swap, speed, mileage?
We didn't change the carb. Only the reeds. Night and day difference in speed. No additional stress because it's the only difference between the 9.9 and the 15hp. It's basically a true 15hp now instead of a restricted 15hp
Hey! I have a 1994 Yamaha 9.9 I’m trying to convert to a 15. Do you know if I can just pop new 15 reeds or would I have to switch the carb too? This was a great video thanks
In addition, the 9.9 hp teddy bear has a smaller carburetor throat and the 15 hp carburetor has larger nozzles. At least I saw it in the European versions. There will be a little more power, but with the replacement of the carburettor it will increase properly. Many here also think that there is only a difference in the opening of the intake valves in these older models
Fuel mix is based on the burn of the spark plug, not getting Fouled. If the book says 100:1 Mix and your running 50 parts Fuel to 1 part oil and plugs look good Burn clean, I like the idea as it Gets better internal lubrication.
Its not HP but torque in middrange that get boat over water pressure and make it go to plane. Cc capacity is important for boat engine to get him, and load over point of max pressure.. Older 2 strokes have much bigger cc engines then newer 4strokes.. And 2 strokes can be retuned to higher power just with 2 thing. . bigger intake&carb and bigger exhaust.. And off you go..

Good stuff and thanks for sharing and juat some info in the off road MX world Boyesen sells replacement reeds and these stock reed stops are eliminated completely. If you have thick reeds the top end power will be better and if they are thin then the low end power delivery will be better and the top end will not be due to the thinner reeds will flutter. I know this is an outboard motor but typically the two stroke motor designs tend to follow similar processes. Just an FYI.
A little confused here...I have a 1999 Yam short stroke and plan on the upgrade. I only need to replace the reeds and use the old carb ? Or do I buy a new carb with the 15 hp reeds ? Also, do you recommend me changing-out the impeller ?
All you need is 15hp reeds. Carbs are the same. Impeller has nothing to do with power that's for the waterpump and yes if you haven't changed it I recommend it.
Well... I may soon be adding the Yamaha to my search for new-to-me motors! Thank you. Also, I have been looking HARD at just getting one of the new tohatsu 9.9 to convert to 20.
