Well that’s what Simon did right here - even though it could have been just critique he decides how he‘s taking it and with that he decides the outcome by himself
We use it all the time at my new job, much more mature group than my last job. Not once has anyone used the word family but its the closest to feeling like it is.
Your videos helped me gain the courage to confront my narcissistic ceo with the problems he was directly causing me and others, and by extension the whole company, and when he made zero of my recommended improvements you helped me to quit without fear (followed by about 80%! of that company over the next 6 months - so really, people quitting allowed it to feel easier for others to quit so you helped a LOT of people). Now I have a job I love for a better company and a MUCH better boss, and I chalk a large part of it up to things I learned from you, Simon. ❤
You're my hero today. Learning from repeat work in order to make it better is a quotidian action. We might forget that the goal is not have it right, per se. The real goal is becoming a better version of ourselves along the way! 🤗
I went through a similar thing with a boss. Life lessons I'll never forget. Other people were mad for me and I told them, no I want to learn and I'm growing through this. Thank you!
I agree! When in school I used to love all teacher feedback, even the negative! I learned so much from the negative comments and always appreciated the attention the teacher put on my work.
I always attract people that are “tough”…. I don’t have a problem with this type of personality bc I don’t take their personality PERSONAL! Meaning… I know their ideas or their actions or their decisions are not about me or against me…it’s just their character! And I’m able to separate myself and my ego…from situations that are just on the exterior. I never had any guidance or support in my life growing up…so, so much of what a had learned in my life has been through tough people, I think they are more transparent and sincere.
I definitely can relate to your talking points. I had a similar experience with my pitching coach during my customer discovery course. We really must appreciate all of the coaches patience and techniques. Because I did so well so fast, it took me awhile longer to really wrap my head around some of her very simple and straightforward advice.
Thank you Mr. Simone for this video, I have been crying for months because I haven't accomplished my career goals. Now I have a different perspective of achieving it. I just need to remind myself to have fun with it
It’s always a blessing to have such real teachers who take you to the next level. Because that’s the only way you become a bigger person. But balance is important. Each time you are made to stretch out of your comfort zone, it should within a threshold. Too much stretching lands you in panic zone. Sweet spot is beyond comfort zone but before panic zone. Slowly but steadily, your comfort zone increases and your threshold increases.
I'm learning. But it's hard. If you have low self-esteem and don't show it, like me, the other person doesn't realize you're sensitive to that. And things are not getting better when you shut yourself off - learned this the hard way.
As a man my value is immensely dependent on my occupation. What we do for work is a huge part of our identity. What you are trying to say, is that don't assign value to yourself based on the OUTCOME of your efforts. Efforts matter more then outcomes, as long as there a positive learning curve involved. Else, it is healthy for your occupation to be a part of your identity. Most developmental theories support this idea.
Being teachable is important. I always try to learn more about the business in addition to performing well at the job, to get a greater appreciation for the company. Not all businesses support good attitudes if it doesn't come with other things they want..
Jim Rohn famously referred to it as your value to the marketplace, and often said do not confuse your value to the marketplace with your personal value. They are not the same because your personal value is a measurement of your morals and ethics, while your value to the marketplace is a measurement of your growth and development professionally Very intelligent man
It’s easy when it’s somebody’s story… some teachers are bullies because they can, they talk with emotions and attitudes even attack and mock … it’s hard not to feel bad.
Thank you being so advisable which i tend recieve from various parties whom neither of them are my native nor nor any language user of mine i am going to wrap up for the time being since i have to rush up to the doctor.
Great advice. Laye onset nursing career & grad year is brutal. Sadly minimal encouragement & colleagues unskilled in the art of constructive criticism. If I stick at it, I'll be sensitive to future cohorts = staff retention.
Criticism can be tough to handle, but it’s important to remember that it’s not a reflection of our worth as a person. Instead, it’s an opportunity for growth and development.
People don’t realise the commitment it requires for a senior to correct your work If you think about it, his criticism of you gains you lots and does not help the senior much
Oh Simon, I do love how you put things into fresh perspective, one that adds value to the person as an individual and that is sooooo beautiful and refreshing to see and hear. Thank you 🤗
Nowadays I find some people, young people can't take feedback. They think we're trying to' attack ' them but it's nothing personal. It's work, just work.
Wow. I can totally relate. Same thing happened to me in my Real Analysis class in graduate school. I got so many redo’s on my homework. I kept doing it again and again. Eventually ended up with an A.
My coworker was always stressed and I helped her get a promotion to my department as we have pretty much no stress. She behaves as if it is equally stressful and I explained to her there is nothing about this job that is meaningful to your identity. She is still identifying with her job. But she is getting there.
Thank you for this take 🙏 Simon. I sometimes feel I shouldn't do things if I get it wrong too much. I am learning to work harder at different tasks and just keep trying harder. 😊
Your work wasn't just the PowerPoint presentation, it was the reworking of it. And the drive to do that was the result of work on yourself. Your value may not be the work itself, but without the work, there's no value.
While I agree with this, and I take this to heart, it is important to know why we are receiving criticism in some cases, or what we are learning. If the criticism is just to critique and give out hard work, while having this outlook can be fun, it's also still training your brain to think in a way that is not natural to you, and you are losing touch with your unique way of doing things. I know we love the idea of losing ourselves to the system, but don't mistake creative spark with trying to be original. We all bring something unique to the table and that shouldn't be snuffed out. Some things are objective and some things are completely subjective. That said, having a positive outlook and attitude for yourself is key. That is important. I also want to say, I do not shame those who find it hard to have this outlook or who "take things personally" as some say they do not. The truth is that we are all humans and can all make mistakes and when it comes to work and life, things do get personal whether we like it or not. Things do get personal. However, our perception of reality can be warped because of trauma and hurt, and some of us need healing time, healthy people and environments where we receive love to see things through the correct lens and the right reality. Let's be kind to one another.
I get this a lot. The trick is to provide the same thing over and over again. They never realize that you didn’t change anything, cause ultimately the changes are just petty nitpicking
What certainly is not fun and zero acceptable bosses shouting at their employees and thinking that’s going to motivate or inspire them. I’ve heard it from friends and when for the first time experienced a boss who shouted on a daily basis at everyone in the office and on the phone, I knew there moment coming when he’ll be raising his voice towards me, and I was right. 2 months in and when that happened I confronted him on the spot in front of everyone told him that that kind of behavior is not a callable for me. After that confrontation I was 100% sure he’s going to fire me but no it didn’t happen. He continued with his toxic traits so by the end of the week told him I’m quitting. He was surprised and tried to convince me otherwise but no I was happily out there. The point is there are rare bosses who actually can give a constructive criticism and make it not personal.
Thank You Sir Simon Not only sharing your experience yet also highlighten this ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ 💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎 Even that stage of your Life , Career changes are possible NOW.
This happened to me. At one point he gave me a B minus minus. I was like “come on!” But I also started finding it hilarious and I enjoyed the process of getting better
That's absolutely good advice... I think he just managed to into the mind of a narcissist, and played the game well enough to win it. Yeah, sometimes they can be cooperative if you're conscious enough to play within the parameters of what they are able to handle... They're like pets, they can be friendly sometimes - with training and patience... 🤭🤦🤣🥇🎯
And it’s important to have a teacher that teaches and not just criticize.
Well that’s what Simon did right here - even though it could have been just critique he decides how he‘s taking it and with that he decides the outcome by himself

You are so right.
I Agree 👍 And 🚨THIS 🚨 Starts At Home With Parents
Ohh..ooh! Really. If I could re-do those moments w/ those teachers!! Oh a 2 bosses! Oh my..!!
What a great anecdote! I never thought of humor as a way to diffuse criticism, so thank you!
We use it all the time at my new job, much more mature group than my last job. Not once has anyone used the word family but its the closest to feeling like it is.
Yes, humour is such great friend in these situations!!

Our worth as individuals extends far beyond our professional accomplishments.
We are all valuable for who we are, not what we do.
Good advice. I don't take anything personally at work, it's a learning experience.

Thank you Mr Sinek.
You have enlightened my thinking and now I have a very open mind to seeing an opportunity in every situation
