Best jazz singer in the world ever! There are others I dig but not so well as Sass. She taught the world how jazz should be sung. She was a consummate musician, played great piano. I miss her music so much and her as well. We all hung out together every night back in the day when she was in town.
Dizzy represents the pioneers of bop, including Thelonius Monk and his mighty pen. Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter bridged the gap from bop to post bop and captured both so artistically. With these artists backing Sassie, how could go wrong. hers was as fine an instrument as any horn blower and yes - she truly was a musician.
If you are hip to the history of modern jazz, you know that Dizzy and Sarah were there at the very beginning, in the studio in 1945 with Bird and other legends, making pioneering records that would change the face of the music forever. To see them reunited on stage all those years later, and performing one of the signature tunes from that early bop era, brings goosebumps.... What does it feel like to be on stage performing music that you literally invented 40 years prior? Surreal stuff...
I love that trumpet. The way it's built guarantees projection. The fact that the tone is still pretty awesome gets me right at the eyes and eardrums at the exact same time.
Even in my Baby-Boomer days - I' feel in Love with older music and she was ONE of them...kinda reminds me of Anita Baker as well...I just love the silkey blues....
Billy Higgins was always in the zone when he accompanied the likes of Lee Morgan, Dizzy, Donald Bryd (Black Jack), Dexter Gordon etc. I recently read that he was the house drummer at most Blue Note recording sessions. I met him at his World Stage Jazz Club in Los Angeles. It was a small intimate place like the Jazz Bakery.(L.A. area) I miss that indelible smile too.
I could listen to these true "singers" and "musicians" like Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, and Hancock ALL DAY and ANY DAY over the modern day garbage of today.
The story of Dizzy's trumpet goes that it hit the floor one time and bent it. When he tried to play it, he actually liked the sound that he got from it so that's what he stuck with.
the beauty of this song is in the lyrics. With a horn player already in this band did she also have to blow the horn? Lovely textures in her voice though.
@MusicLoverBrian1 - Absolutely agreed! No need to tell me twice lol. I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, for me as a Black man living in the era of (C)rap music & pop cow manure I am expected to listen to the "popular" stuff. But instead I listen to S Vaughan, Monk, George Benson, Coltrane, Nat Cole & even R&B greats like Jill Scott, Keith Sweat, Boyz II Men so I get a lot of hate for liking "quality" over crappy "quantity" of modern (C)crap music & little boy pop music.
What a voice, singing wordless vocals improvising on the great Monk melody with Dizzy, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock. I don't recognize the drummer but he is very good, too. I would have liked to hear her sing the lyrics, too.
Jazz(blues, rock)appeared, when classical music had been killed by the separation of composer, and ententainer. Now jazz is taught by theory, fingerworks - the same way classical music was killed. While everything is labeled,no new styles, new sounds appearing.Artists killed by free downloads, and tons of information,so art remains a hobby-the most important thing in human history! An other dark age we have here.Hope left.
@JazzyZenBrotha Don't get me started on the modern junk that is being thrown out there for the public from the so-called music industry. Sarah Vaughan has more talent, skill, and artistry wrapped around her little finger than these pop singers who called themselves "singers" and "artists". Sarah Vaughan is a TRUE singer and artist and it shows in her music. You can tell that she puts her whole self into a song, giving it all that she got and in the end she delivers nothing but quality.
Sarah's scat version captures the feel of the song better than the hordes of jazz pop poseurs who have covered it with keyboards and strings and noisy percussion -- not to mention flat vocals (see Amy Winehouse).
Stfu Amy was a jazz legend. You can't compare other singers to Sarah Vaughan. Its like comparing a human to a god. Doesnt work. Amy's version is fucking awesome.
@meepmeepXroadrunner I have heard her time and again give credit to her musicians and seems like she has a great rapport with them. Even if you a right, this is about music and she delivers. Now you yourself are not perfect and I bet you have some nasty ways yourself.!!
He himself admits that he looks like a frog.Of course no one minds(not me).The notes the phrasing ,the ideas, and last but not least his stuff he has done for jazz is not possible to equate.I love Dizzy and Parker
Then she just casually sits down like what she did ain't nuffin! Woman is still A GOD! Hell this morning I heard them say Mariah Carey was a legend............WTF! I'd give anything to relive these days. Talk about going to hell when you die. Shydd with what's out today I think I died am already in hell! You tube makes me think it might just be purgatory. Thank God for Purgatory then!

This is a FUCKING MASTERPIECE. I'm sorry for the language buts exactly what came out as I sat here and listened.
Her voice is almost instrument. And also emotional. Just amazing.
Her voice is the top-class musical instrument.
Her voice is THE instrument!
Sarah... The Sassy! Her voice was like a superb wine. It aged beautifully, and got better and better as time went on. x
I prefer her early recordings, although she was always great.
Without a doubt the best cover of 'Round Midnight

Yep, that is Billy Higgins on drums. He had that infectious smile that lasted all those years on the bandstand. Boy we sure miss him!
There should be special tags or stars for master videos like this.
Lot’s of things “should be” in the world……..that are still being waited on to happen!
It should possible to vote 10 stars for videos like this one !

That is, of course, 'Round Midnight by Thelonius Monk. I was surprised she didn't sing the lyric but enjoyed the scat version, too. Nice upload!

The story of Dizzy's trumpet goes that it hit the floor one time and bent it. When he tried to play it, he actually liked the sound that he got from it so that's what he stuck with.

Billy Higgins "the man with the wonderful smile" on drums
Oh Shyt Herbie Hancock on piano, I didn't see who's on drums. Man what a band!
Wow! I guess this means you can sing a song without knowing the words. What a fantastic singer. The band's not bad either!
My jazz friends & me argue to death who is the best between Sarah-Billie-Dinah & Ella….we still haven’t come to an agreement!
drummer is Billy Higgings.
Musicianship
Ron Carter on bass in this clip.
Herbie Hancock on piano also with the other greats!
Well, Herbie himself was one of them. He learned from the masters.

@59argendor no olvides tu sentido del humor
Instead of singing the lyrics (even tough they are beautiful) Sassy scats all the way through. Not many can do that. She can.
Dizzy was Dizzy and Sarah was Sarah, 'nouf said.
And Billie was Billie and Lester was Lester.
and with herbie.....are you kidding me?
I know, wow, right?? all stars cross the generations isn't it just beautiful~~???
Dizzy is diggin' Sarah, no doubt. But the feeling is mutual, I'm sure.
Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet!
She didn't sing one recognizable word and yet it was transcendent!
Who is on drums?
It doesn't look like Ignacio Berroa...
THE GREAT BILLY HIGGINS!!!!
...o qué hacer cuando no te acuerdas de la letra.
@meepmeepXroadrunner
I have heard her time and again give credit to her musicians and seems like she has a great rapport with them. Even if you a right, this is about music and she delivers. Now you yourself are not perfect and I bet you have some nasty ways yourself.!!
