this will forever be the greatest not only composition but live arrangements to have ever been performed or played and may all musicians after be impersonations in one charecteristic or another yet we still keep chasing a new groove and it always always. will be sir thelonious monk
Behind the piano he's a genius and a legend with a cool attitude, get him on stage and praise him in front of hundreds of people and he's like a deer in headlights.
I've never seen Monk look self-conscious, even modest and humble. Very touching human moment--esp. on a tour during which Monk and Blakey were reportedly at complete odds. He also takes a beautiful solo on his most famous composition "Round Midnight" (interrupted by the jazz piano ad).
Modern jazz and modern music don't be the same without Monk flavor , passion and talented , eternal respect for the Best be bop piano composer , the one and only , imitated but not matched , itS Monk time
Dizzy's intro to this tune was very heartfelt and touching to me.Particularly so since it is clear from the closeups of Monk during that intro that Monk was very near to the end of his playing days.
Monk sounds great! One of jazz's few genuises - here paired with one of his few equals - Dizzy. After these two, Ellington, Mingus, Bird, Bud, Trane, Miles. That's the pinnacle!
Man ! I thought i DIDN'T like Jazz...and it's true most of the time. King Crimson was jazzy enough to me, their first version '69 to 74. But when i hear this man/all the musicians that keep it SO beautiful together, i hear FREEDOM in a Magical World we not yet entered in the flesh, except maybe in our Childhood..., AND, important: I can clearly see Charlie Brown, finally lucky, getting his kite into the sky on a warm and windy Summer' s day, even Lucy not being evil-girl on that very special day...
Geniuses are heavenly gifted for the betterment of blessings in unconditional greatness and positive devoted musical genius spirits ✨️ soundbites rolled out tones rolling magically greatness switching lanes throughout the universe. 🎉.
Bu tür mizikleri çocukluktan kulağa alıştırmak gerek çünkü bu rahatlatıyor dinlendiriyor çocuklara fil arkası fonda verilse kulaklar aşina olur emegi geçenlere teşekkürler hep varolun.
I just don’t want to be that fastidious insufferable uncle who is all the time saying that in the past music was much better… but actually it was much better. Pure talent!
I love that wild dynamic moment at 3:55, I think that was one of Dizzy's modifications to the song, he also does this in his Paris version, and you can hear a lady in the audience swoon right afterwards.
Nobody has the chops to play like this anymore - with a little technical wizardry Dizzy's solo could probably be restored in some fashion. Maybe someday it will be.
DE DOELEN's Newport Jazz Festival was first held in 1966. In the explanation of this video for the 7th time, it is 1971, but isn't it 1972? DE DOELEN's poster also participates in this member in 1972. Has anyone investigated?
Mos def reminds me of Dizzy when he speaks. Kindred spirits there. Monk is another example how the black community just dealt with and still deals with mental health issues head on and keeps pressing on because no one was going to feel sorry for you.
Hey friends, as non-english speaker I would love to understand what Dizzy says before the song starts. Anybody can transcribe the words for me in the comments ?
Peace. Ladies and gentlemen, there has been, to my knowledge, no one who’s been a bigger contributor to our music than our very exciting pianist, Mr. Thelonious Monk. [applause] He has served you in several different capacities, including…he’s a top instrumentalist. A great composer, arranger, leader. Bon vivant…and a doll. [Dizzy banters with bandmates] We’re going to play one of his compositions now that has become a standard amongst jazz musicians all around the world, and it’s called “Round Midnight”.

Terrible recording of jazz legends playing an iconic song. Dizzy’s solo is completely lost in this recording as well as much of Stitt’s complementary licks. A flawed recording and a shameful representation of the music.

Thelonius Monk looked so humble and shy ☺️ 🙈 what an extraordinary human being and musician music 🎶 🎵 🎼
Ahhh, Monk was ready after that great introduction, that was real nice of Dizzy
Just love the way they swing their axes. Monsters each and every one of them.
True that!
Very melancholy. Reminds me of better times.
Thelonious Sphere Monk, a giant of jazz.

Arguta osservazzione . Buon anno e avanti sempre a ritmo sincopato.
Sublime ! Quel merveilleux moment ! Monk was a great man , so humble and so talented

The heavyweights of their time and Beyond🤩 thanks for the video

Monk look a bit quiet here....that was the beginning of the last 10yrs of his life

@@Bruce.-Wayne yes, it's sad but he lost interest in playing.

The Genius Sorry two Genius!
It's a shame that this particular recording has so many technical difficulties that it can't be enjoyed to its fullest
Nobody has the chops to play like this anymore - with a little technical wizardry Dizzy's solo could probably be restored in some fashion. Maybe someday it will be.
All said with love.
Ladies and Gentlemen The Real Avengers!
I felt the same way !
To call this video monumental & historical does not give its importance justice!
Oh no! They popped an ad in the middle of Thelonious Monk's solo. How disrespectful!!!!
money respects nothing
Ugh!
Pay for it. Totally worth it
It happened to me. I was stuned.
The gods of commerce - at least it wasn't the Red Rose Tea Commercial
Grandioso
Monk is the master piano 10_day black belt. Ako sam dobro rekao.
Formidabile!
Sublime!! Muchas gracias.
The audio tech did dizzy dirty with his mic
Did he? Looks like Dizzy stepped away from any mic...
Facts... I mean, dude had one job !!!
Wow
And again: in our : the Netherlands .....so happy we were able to have that ....proud ? No, happy.
Was, is this of the best ever ?
❤❤❤❤❤❤

An ad in the middle! They're not AWAKE!
Even ,Numbers...
What happened to Dizzy solo on round midnight I couldn't hear him!
Mimming Monk when he used to step up around his piano and dance. Just respect to the personnality, out of the micro. Maybe not? Anyways.
Fire the soundman!
Peace

What is in the white bottle over Monk’s piano?
A candle ?
Eyedrops?
Probably lube for Kai’s slide, I would guess.
Monk’s style was just different than Bud Powell and Art Tatum.
I wish Dizzy stayed in front of his Mic.
He made it more special for who's been present there by walking away from the microphone
Pourriez vous avoir la bonté de délivrer l'identité du tromboniste , par pitié !
😅😮
amazing line up, but not the best performance of the song
روسيا الموسيقى ديالكم هي الموسيقى العثمانية التركية بدون منازع الموسيقى الشرقية مصدرها تركيا عاد مصر من قديم الزمان شاء الله فعل ؟
Perhaps I need medication to appreciate Thelonius Monk, but without it, I prefer Garner and Brubeck.
Audio could be better.👎👎👎👎
I have only liked Blue Monk from him but this is nice.
Nice? It's a masterpiece.
