Running The Brighton Marathon - The Marathon With So Much Character!

  • Ever wanted to run the Brighton Marathon? Let me take you along for the ride! Here's my perspective running this fun marathon.
    After a year of cancellations and postponements, the Brighton Marathon was pushed back to 12 September 2021. Boy was it worth the wait.
    I rocked up in the city early on race day morning with my brother, Jack, who was also running the marathon.
    It quickly became apparent that there wasn’t a cloud in sight and it was already starting to get pretty warm at around 8am. From the weather forecasts, we knew we were in for a hot day. We didn’t realise just how hot it was going to be.
    I started in the very first (white) wave at 9.30am and had the pleasure of being amongst the first participants to complete the course.
    The Brighton Marathon is split into a few main sections. Starting in Preston Park, it first winds through the city and then takes runners along the main road into Brighton along the coast. After looping on yourself, you're brought all the way along the main parade by Brighton Pier and then go back through the city before looping a very long residential street. Next up, you head through an industrial district before making an epic final run the entire length of the sea front promenade before finishing in the race village.
    Finishing in 3h and 17m, this was my slowest marathon (my other times being 3h 3m and 3h 13m). Whilst I was a little disappointed with this, the heat and being directly exposed to the sun for over 80% of the course made this a very tricky race.
    I’d highly recommend the Brighton Marathon to anyone interested in distance running, who wants a challenge, or who simply wants to explore a beautiful city on the coast of southern England.

    Thanks for this video, Craig! I'm doing Brighton 2022 as my first ever marathon. I have a long story about why I got into running last year and why I'm doing the marathon but, I won't bore you with that. However, it's safe to say I'm pretty nervous about it. Your video has really helped reduce my anxieties. Well done for coping so well with that heat too!

      Hey Ben, my absolute pleasure and thanks for watching! We all have our own reason for running and I enjoy hearing everyone's reason, so it wouldn't be a bore at all. My advice is that you will be absolutely fine as long as you've done your training and you come to race day in a positive mood. It's a nice flat course and it should be a nice day for it hopefully. Enjoy and best of luck!

    Well done, Craig. I was about 23 mins behind you but in much worse shape! Similar to you, I struggled after the first 10 miles and the never-ending road you mentioned nearly finished me off! I think one of my many mistakes was trying to stick to goal pace in those first few undulating miles.
    At least you know one of the reasons for your time being slower than other marathons was that the course was 0.5km too long!

    • @runningcafe1
      @runningcafe1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Matthew! Interesting to hear that you shared many of the same struggles that I did on the day, good to know that I wasn't the only one haha. That never ending road truly felt like it was an optical illusion of some sort in the heat, right? Agreed re the pacing, I'm defo gonna try a negative split next time of running slower first half then faster second half. Best of luck for your next marathon!

    You was ahead of me at Ovindean, I ran 3.01.40 ... Heat didn't impact me too much but a lot had problems..
    Def subscribing, keep up the good work and Good Luck in Paris.

      @runningcafe1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds about right as I was on course to run around 3h after finishing the first 13.1m in about 1h 31m but at that point I hit a massive wall and basically blew up in the heat. My sub 3h marathon dream burst before my eyes. Good learning experience for the next marathon in Paris, thanks for the good luck! 3.01.40 in that heat and that much sun exposure is an immense time, congratulations Paul. Cheers for watching and for the sub!

    great video, i see you got a stitch early on, do you know the reason why you got a stitch, i just wondered as i have the manchester in a few weeks and on both myu last 2 races ive had stitches and dont know why or how to stop getting them?

    • @runningcafe1
      @runningcafe1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Danny, those stitches are a killer right? I have no idea what causes stiches but I believe there are many explanations with reduced blood flow to certain organs / muscle groups being one. I've heard not eating loads before running and staying hydrated helps prevent a stitch whilst slowing pace down gets rid of one. They're such a pain! Best of luck at the Manchester Marathon, it looks like it's gonna be a top day

    Great time but such a schoolboy error taking only 2 gels. I found it hot and got a mere 4:32 on my maiden effort. I wonder if you could have got sub 3 hours if better prepared and not distracted by your GoPro?

    • @runningcafe1
      @runningcafe1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dave, good point about the 2 gels. School boy error indeed. Luckily, there was a stool on route filled with gels and I stocked up big time as I say in the video so I wasn't struggling for too long. Go Pro didn't make a difference whatsoever, it was mainly the weather which caused my struggles. Thanks for watching and well done on your performance.

    When making a statement that there aren't any clouds, a smart guy would turn around and look behind him and then see clouds -- a smart guy would realize that there is a 360 degree view, NOT just what is in front of him.

    • @runningcafe1
      @runningcafe1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't check to see that there were clouds behind me before I made the statement. Very observant of you, my bad.
