    It is the best one box solution for making complete songs or live sets at least for techno. Single cycle samples are more than adequate source of signal for sonic shaping to call it a synth as well. Then there is all that rest of the capabilities you would not get from a synth. In techno particulary it is very useful to have those nice sonic scapes from smooth pads to rhytmically pulsating textures which can be carved from the longer samples and manipulating them with LFOs. By modulating looping and starting positions or using new werp engine you can create almost like wavetable and granular like sounds.

    This is awesome and helps me to learn sound synthesis, not just the Digitakt! But question, is there away to link the pads/tracks together so that I could have tracks 1-3 on the same pitch but slightly detuned (like you did) but have them all triggered at the same time by pressing one pad? I ask because I want to plug in an Arturia Keystep and play them all like one big sawtooth but chromatically on a external midi keyboard

    I think you did an amazing job explaining late 90s sample programming techniques without even calling it that. I was hesitant to get a Digitakt because of the relative lack of polyphony, but what you've shown here shows how you can start writing much more quickly than you could with those old boxes (I have an A4K) but still have a full synth capability (which is lacking on things like the 1010 Blackbox) . The only thing keeping this from being the best sampler ever produced I think is multitimbral polyphony... if you could get even 32 out of this it would replace ALOT of equipment.

    • @koalemos1679

      Honestly even one channel with the chord machine like the model:cycles or syntakt has would blow the lid off this machine….

    • @NunyaB1s
      @NunyaB1s ปีที่แล้ว

      @@koalemos1679 That’s not even close. Those are synthesizers, and one thing that they cannot do is capture a four bar phrase, bounce down to a single track, and then let you continue building your song with the remaining tracks. This allows you to get away with so much more than either the syntakt or the cycles. Now true, if you want to create chords like that both those synths will do it faster, but you’re comparing a Maserati to a Ford F150. Fact is that many records you like were made using exactly the techniques he demonstrates here on more limited samplers than the digitakt. And these techniques aren’t limited to chords as I suggest above with the track bouncing.

      @@NunyaB1s bro, keep your shorts on. It’s 2023. If you wanna make chord tracks like 1996 do you. A chord machine that plays samples in a way akin to the way the machines I mentioned is just objectively better. They just added machines to the digitakt and this would be another useful one to add. I get how it might just not be possible but I’d love a feature like this on my OT and it would make the Digitakt even more tempting.

The Digitakt is obviously a lot better at it since it has full ADSR control as well as 8 tracks vs the M:S 6, and also resampling capability. But this same technique does work on the Model:Samples as well, for anyone wondering

    Nice creative ways to use the digitakt, but the variety of sounds i'm able to get from analog four is nearly limitless (if it had a sample input, it would be limitless). I think i'd prefer to make the A4 a groove box than making the digitakt a synth.
    However, I think everything will be put aside once i get the Torso S-4 and the Heat FX. What the S-4 could do, with something like the Mother 32, has simply blown my mind. I'm still in shock about the S-4.

    I found that much better than using just really single cycle waves is using very short samples (like from few tenths to few hundreds of cycles) - especially when it is samped form analog synths it captures a bit of movement in sound (of course it must be looped the way that it doesn't click and it sounds like 'continuous' sound, without glitches).. Every new synth which come to my hands first thing i do is that i sample various combination of oscillators (plain but also with various modulations modulations) but without amp/filter envelope (just straight constant tone) on various notes (c0 - c7) - this material i then use as "single cycle" waveforms in Digitakt ..

  • @troyouttram

    Hey Eric, Fantastic video and well thought through and clear. I learned some important lessons today. I have a RTYM mkii and wondered how to get these single cycle wave forms? and then load them into that.

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful! Actually, you don't need them with the RYTM MK2, because it has actual synth engines built in. There is actually a 'Dual VCO' or Voltage Controlled Oscillator in the source section of pads 1, 2, and 3/4. This is a true dual oscillator set up that can be used to generate almost any tone. it is one of the reasons that the RYTM MK2 is so powerful. I might do a video on that coming up now that you mention it. Thanks so much for watching!

      @kp8923 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love this video but I'm going to respectfully disagree with Surco here. The dual VCO is fantastic but it's even better with a SCW underneath the analog voice for added stability to the tuning. Even by Elektron's admission the dual VCO has odd, unstable tuning (this is also part of its charm). The sample page on the Rytm can use single cycle waveforms just like the Digitakt does, just set the playback to FW Loop. This can also be hugely expansive for drum design when combined with one-shot LFOs. Add in the actual main course, the analog drum voices, and you're all set.

      Hi, thanks! They are very different machines. The Digitakt is great for sample playback with sample sound shaping. Great sequencer, and the ability to easily sequence 8 pieces of external gear on dedicated midi tracks. The Rytm is a sound design monster allowing for layering of samples with analog drum engines to create amazing sounds. Drum especially, but everything else too. Sample editing is easier on the Digitakt, but resampling is great on the Rytm. The Digitakt is much more portable, and has some great performance effects like 'effect all' and reload pattern that encourage live experimentation. The Rytm has some very cool programable performance modes that are deeper but less improvisational. It all depends what you will use them for. Both great machines, and I use them both very differently. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!

A, because it only samples in mono so you lose the ping-pong, and B, because when you pitch the chord up and down the delay time changes because of the time stretch. The reverb and delay can be added to the chord again later and stay in time with the track.

    Thanks for this tutorial, it's useful to see how certain things can be achieved with the Digitakt. However, to me this just confirms that it really wasn't designed for this at all. Having to go through all that pain just to play some chords takes away many of the "happy accidents" that tend to occur to me when I play around on a keyboard with an interesting synth sound.
    I feel that Elektron could have made it so much easier to play a chord and use voice stealing similar to the Digitone to solve for too many concurrent voices without forcing you to go through the hassle of copying the sample across multiple tracks and deal with lots of filters concurrently. Look at the Roland MC-101 for example, where you can load and play any sample as a 'Tone track' and thus play chords and use its built-in arp with it. That machine has so much more voice polyphony than the Digitakt it's almost crazy. And it does stereo sampling too. I honestly think they crippled the Digitakt unnecessarily for no good reason. Yes it does external audio sampling (the MC-101 only does internal resampling and external sampling over USB audio), but it's an unusually limited sampler for its price.
    The other thing that makes it less useful as a groovebox to me is its inability to route external audio through its built-in effects. If it had support for it, you could for example connect a cheap separate synth like the Arturia MicroFreak into its audio inputs (which in itself sadly lacks effects - and badly needs it). That would make the sample-based workflow make a lot more sense and the chords chore could be delegated to the Microfreak instead. But unfortunately, the Digitakt just won't let you do that - another seemingly unnecessary limitation since the Digitone clearly can do this. So you then have to buy some sort of mixer to combine the output of the Digitakt and the other synth, and also a separate effects pedal to give the Microfreak some reverb and mix it all together. Unless of course you have a multi-input sound card and are happy to jam out while being tethered to the DAW. But then that takes it outside of groovebox territory to me.
    Of the two devices in this price range from Elektron, the Digitone is far more interesting as an all in one groovebox to me. Yes, it lacks sampling capabilities, which is a shame, but it can route another cheap sampler/synth (perhaps the Model:Samples or MC-101) that can play samples and run it through its effects. What it gains in comparison to the Digitakt as a standalone groovebox is true polyphony with the ability to play chords without cumbersome and programmatic workarounds; a very useful arp that can really inspire new music ideas; a truly interesting synth engine that can generate amazing movement with just a single note polyphony; and the ability to absorb other hardware for future expansion (perhaps the Digitakt!). On top of that, it's an incredibly deep and sonically inspiring synthesizer. To me, it's the clear winner here. But I can see how if someone is more sample based in their setup, where the melodies and chords play a less dominant role in the music, one might think differently.
    In any case, your tutorial was very useful and helped me get even more excited about eventually buying a Digitone. 😊 Thanks!

      Glad you liked it. Each machine has its strengths and weaknesses for sure. I always try to show them, and show what works for me with the hope it will help others figure out what will or won’t work for them. It’s the beauty of this whole amazing realm that we can each use these amazing tools to express ourselves in unique ways. I’d love to see what you do with the Digitone!! Thanks for watching!

      @@SURCOlive It really does help. If/when I buy the Digitone, I'll be sure to let you know because you will have played an important role in my purchase decision. I can't promise you beautiful jams though, maybe with a few months of practice. 😅

      I look forward to it! The beauty is in the practice no matter the end result. :)

    Maybe a dumb question, but I’ve seen a lot of videos of people doing this. Can’t you just add a sample of a sin wave (or a synth sound) and save yourself the trouble of the earlier steps? Or just find or make the ideal synth tone on hardware better tuned for that and upload it?

      You can for sure sample synths. The sample of a sin wave (or other wave shapes) is exactly what this is. It is just a single wave that you can make ‘oscillate’ by repeating really fast and act like a synth to make your own sounds. That’s the fun of synthesis for me! I hope this helped.
