Recent RTX 3000 leaks have been suggesting that the RTX 3080 will have a 320W TGP and the RTX 3090 will have a 350W TGP. With these much higher power limits many are beginning to wonder if their power supply will be able to provide enough power to these new Ampere GPUs. The question on everybodys mind seems to be is will my 650W PSU be able to handle the RTX 3080, or do I need to buy an 850W PSU.

I ran SLI 980Ti, a i7 4930K, and 32GB of DDR3 all overclocked on a 850W PSU for almost a year. In hindsight that was probably a bad idea.

@@GraphicallyChallenged I ran (and still use the PSU) SLI 980ti, 2700k that was OC'd and 32GB of ram (albeit all with mild overclocks, nothing extreme) on a Corsair AX650 i bought something like 8 or 9 years ago.

I remember when the forums were clowning people with 1000w+ PSUs in 2020, who's laughing now?
It's even more dumb to mock people for quality PSUs because the slightly more expensive higher wattage (usually gold or plat) PSUs tend to run more steadily with a lower draw, so a more expensive higher watt higher efficiency PSU will end up paying back the extra you spent by saving on your electric bill AND be more reliable the whole time.
@@JB-xl2jc Just from an engineering standpoint an overkill PSU will last longer because it's barely being strained, I have a corsair HX1000W from 2008 that powered a i7 920 at 4.2ghz with no power saving 24/7 for a decade and it's still going strong now. Only replaced it this year for a new build with another 1000w corsair just as a precaution.
I got 1200 psu 5 years old from my sli build. it's actually useful now.
Me. 1000w is STILL ridiculous overkill if you're not going to SLI AT LEAST 2 high end cards like 2080 ti's, alongside full custom watercooling, etc.
The reason we were clowning people is you would see idiots who would get an Ryzen 3600x, 16gb of ram, and a 2060, and then buy a 1000w PSU.

A PC with an 8700k and an RTX 2080ti consumes around 450W. The 3090 will consume ~100W more than a 2080Ti, and it'll run fine on a 650W PSU. You guys need to stop acting like this is the most power-hungry GPU ever. There are cards like GTX 590, GTX Titan Z, HD7990, etc that are more power-hungry than the 3090.

Just letting everyone know, 750W recommendation is based off of a 3080 and 10900k pairing. It probably includes headroom too. PC Gamer's 10900k 5.3 ghz OC peaked at 331W, and at the absolute peak for Tom's Hardware's 1080 ti ROG Strix OC'd was around 350W. At absolutely the worst case scenario (or best depending on how you look at it), these two combined pushed to their limits combine to 680W. Unless you're stretching each part to their absolute limits, you'll not need something greater than 650W. At that point if you're running a 10900K and have the gear to push it that high, you'd probably have the money and may have already bought an 850W+ PSU.
I see the 3700X non-OC in stress tests hitting a total system power draw of 150W in reviews with AIDA64, slap a 3080's 320W TDP and add another 150W just to be super safe and you get 470 + 150 = 620W minimum when you're stressing both the 3700X and 3080. This is the extreme worst case scenario and if you're planning to push your parts this hard, you most likely know what you're doing and will have a properly equipped PSU. The average consumer will NEVER be stressing both the CPU and GPU to these peak wattages in average scenarios. Stress tests put completely unreasonable load on the given part, which will never translate to real world load and power consumption.
GamersNexus even made a video on this recently where they tested a 10900K and 2080 ti at 100% load on both and he even got lower system wattage than my numbers! Where I got 620W from worst case, he got around 530W with ACTUAL worst case benchmarks. In games, consumption was even lower at somewhere in the 400s (still 10900k 2080 ti). Watch that video instead of one where someone just plugs in numbers and spits out a recommendation.
Point is, these recommendations should always be taken with a grain of salt. Guru3D recommends a 500W PSU for a 1070 ti, and I have ran it easily on a 450W high quality unit (SF450 for anyone wondering) with no issues even with a slight OC. Please please please DO NOT cheap out on the quality of your PSU, whatever wattage you choose. Look at the PSU tier list on LTT forums. I can vouch for Seasonic GX Series, Super Flower Leadex III's, and Corsair's SF line. Really anything on the A/B tier will do you justice. I'm not saying don't buy 750W+ units. Give yourself peace of mind and go for the 850W if you want, because yes, PSUs are the most efficient at 50% load. Even then for a high quality unit like a 650W Leadex III, efficiency ranges between 90% - 92% at between 50% - 90% load. That's only a 2% difference. But if you're the guy running a 3600X or 9600K and you're not doing or are planning to do anything crazy and you have a 650W PSU, don't scramble to go grab an 850W PSU for your 3080 because chances are, you will be fine.

If you don't plan to do some serious overclocking, 750W should be fine. I mean you can just use the calculator from the video yourself. For my current built with a 3080 it recommended 650W.

I think people forget you can always undervolt and underclock the gpu if needed. In most cases you end up with a slight loss in performance and get much better efficiency. I'm not sure why everyone seems to forget this. I'm willing to bet you can drop 50 watts or more off a 3080. If a 3070 is 220w... Then there's plenty of headroom for undervolting on the 3080.
There's a reviewer here on youtube that dropped 100W off a 3090 and got it into the 270-280W range. I myself typically have my 3070 undervolted to .8v and run right around 160-170W rather than the stock 220+.
Of course, the 40 series kinda murdered this way of getting more out of your card in the face.

@@maxican5286 For the 12-pin connector, you'll only need a PSU that has two 8-pin connectors. Also, be sure that the wattage of the PSU is ENOUGH. Modular are only for easier cable management or just for the luxury of having one. Cheers

750 watt has always been the sweet spot for me. I used to own a Corsair AX750, now I own a Seasonic Focus GX750. Even though it may look a bit overkill, future proofing on a part you keep for 10 YEARS isn't bad, it's not like it's gonna cost you a kidney smh

Good power supplies have multiple fail safes to make sure it doesn't catch on fire. If you go over the max wattage the PSU will shut its self down. If your GPU pulls more than the PSU can handle, the PSU will simply shutdown.

Just a reminder, external battery banks and battery backup utilities are usually around only 100-400 watts. Some are up to 800 watts, but you're going to be paying a kidney for those. If you need a backup battery incase power goes out, this is something to consider.

Three months ago I started getting ready for my new PC build. I couldn’t find a power supply anywhere from 500 to 1000 watts cause they were all sold out. So I settled on a 1200w from Be quiet. I guess things worked out in my favor lol

Honestly, you need a simple formula called Watts Law, also known as P = I * E - which is really easy (P = Power; I = Current, and lastly; E = Voltage). It is all about Current and Voltage to calculate power properly.
1. Also, you can transpose this formula P = I * E to calculate Current and Voltage. Okay lets look at your 12V rail, your power supply company (for Marketing purposes) is usually factoring your current rating by a factor of x 10. So, For example - when you look on your power supply and see the 12V rail that is labeled at 50 Amps this is usually 5 Amps * 10 = 50A. This equals 12V * 50 Amps = equals 600 Watts of power (remember this Part later).
2. What we need to do - is find out what is the current (or Amps) that our RTX 3080 Card will draw? So, Lets transpose our Watts Law Formula - 320W (P) divided by 120 AC-V (E) = 2.6A. That's how much current our RTX 3080 card will draw Under Load - and probably a max of 2.9A - to 3.2A not sure if we would see this, but let's be safe.
3. Many systems today idle at .87 Amps to 1 Amp - Now add that to our load current 2.6 Amps + .87 Amps = 3.47 Amps on our 12V rail. But you can make bump that to 3.8 Amps to 4.0 Amps worst case scenario with the RTX 3080.
4. However, NVidia does not know what types of systems people have - Many older systems with Lots of HDD's and Fans and tons of other stuff you have connected will obviously draw more current - Hence the 750W recommendation! NVIDA just wants the end user to be cautious.
4. So, my Mini ITX with Ryzen 7 3700X O/C'd to 4.0GHZ on all cores and 3 SSD'S and an M.2 drive - and Enermax Liqtec120X liquid cooling + (2) LED RGB and 2 other fans idles at .87 Amps or 106 Watts + 3.2 Amps RTX 3080 card worst case = 4.07 Amps!
**I have a 650W power supply with a 12V Rail of 54A which is actually 5.4 amps = 648 Watts - I am going to use this first and if I notice anything weird or strange - I will upgrade only if I experience power issues. If your Power supply has something like 45-48Amps on the 12V rail - I would upgrade to something like 54Amps or higher on the 12V rail, when you do this, the wattage will naturally be higher!
5. I definitely liked that he used OuterVision PS Calculator and it came up for me with 39.3 Amps on the 12V rail - which translates to 3.9 amps - Remember the KEY here is 12V Rail and what value it has for current! But, if you have tons of stuff attached then choose the 750W or an above wattage power supply.

A PC running an 8700k and an RTX 2080ti consumes around 450W. The 3090 will consume ~100W more than a 2080Ti. So, a 650W PSU is enough.
EVGA G2 was excellent, the G3 was phenominally good, the G5 is meh' since the tariffs forced EVGA to stop using Super Flower PSUs. Hold on to that G2.
I paid 220 for my 850 watt evga platinum, didn't think I'd need it, but at least I won't have to upgrade it now

Crazy thing about power supplies and rated wattage. Going off memory here bare with me. I think it was 2009 when the first gen I7s came out. I built a I7 920 D0 stepping rig with a pair of amd 5870s with 16 gig of DDR 2 all snugged on a gigabyte X58 UD5. I had a corsair 750TX.
About 2013, I bought 7990 to swap out the 5870s. Still have one 5870 in a box. I was still on the same 750TX which was manufactured in 2009.
Then I got even more ridiculous and bought a used 7970 and ran that with the 7990 for trifire. Same rest of the configuration including the same corsair 750TX.
That setup ran so damn hot, with ridiculous power consumption but no worries, I planned to upgrade to the new at the time 4th gen I5 4690k.
The X58 mobo finally started to suffer degradation and wouldn't overclock anymore (confirmed with a spareboard). So it was a perfect time to upgrade.
2014, I upgraded the platform to the 4th gen I7 4770k and oveclocked it to 4.5ghz with a gigabyte Z97 gaming GT, 16GB of DDR3, the amd 7990 and 7970 and kept the same 750TX.
A year later the 7970 died, probably a heat death because it was blocked by the 7990 but it was used so maybe that had a factor. I still had the 7990 so oh well.
Around 2016 I think, the HTC vive came out and I had to retire the 7990 because it didn't have HDMI port needed for the vive so I sort of sidegraded to a Nvidia GTX 1070. Still the same PSU.
Christmas 2018 I built a new i5 9600k rig with a 2070 and a gigabyte Z390 mobo.
The interesting part is the I7 4770 is still being used by my son, still overclocked but with the gtx 1070 thats overclocked as well and still with that corsair 750tx. 11 years that PSU as been slaving along. A few of those years it has ran well above its rated capacity, but it showed me that a good efficient PSU is way more important than the wattage number printed on the case.
My son is replacing the 4th gen rig with a 10th gen I7 and will swap the 1070 with a 3080. He will replace the aging 750TX because its not modular and the cable management is next to impossible with the case he has now which is a Thermaltake view 71
My current rig has a corsair HX 1050 watt PSU, ill see how long she last.
Just wanted to share my experience with probably the best PSU I've ever used in my 26 years of PC gaming.
Oh and the AMD 7990 is in a friends PC, he plays Ark with it. Said it warms his room when its cold out, lol. They don't make stuff like they used to anymore. 😅
I was playing around with Newegg’s power supply calculator and i found it odd that no matter how i configured it it told me every time that you need more wattage if you’re running a 6800xt vs a 6900 xt. I assumed the 6900xt would need more power
I went to Microcenter a few weeks ago and I was looking for A 1000-1200w titanium PSU from EVGA or Seasonic. All they had was an EVGA 1600w T2, I was like, whatever, I'll get it. The good thing is, it will help to passively cool the rig at 50% load, and will most likely come in handy when the RTX 40 series are announced two years from now...

I think the 3000 series is an anomaly, the power draw of components usually goes down or stay the same. So, there's no reason to freak out if your PSU is between 600-800W
Still rocking Vega 56 with 5600x, but got the rm850x for the future. Some would maybe still say overkill, but I think it's better to run at half of the wattage due to efficiency and fan speed.

Unless you are heavily overclocking your components pushing them far past their efficiency curve (frequency vs. voltage), your 650w should be fine for a 3090 stock with any normal consumer desktop CPU. Obviously I don't know exactly what's in your PC, but I'm willing to bet it most likely doesn't have something like a Threadripper or something consuming insane amounts of power.

With overclocked 2070S and 140% power allowed on 3070X, it had 380-390W steady power and 430W peaks during tests, and 320/390 during gaming. I'm going with the same PSU to get 4700X\4800X and 3070S. My hope goes to 410/460W figures.

I purchased a Corsair AX850 PSU for my system when I got my hands on a RTX 3090 FE. The 3090 has been tripping over current protection on my PSU....best I can find online is that the spikes in voltage from the 3090 cause the PSU to trip it's OCP and shuts the entire system down. I have a Corsair RM1000X on the way to see if that resolves the issue for me.

My PC (R9 3950X + GTX1070) needs about 350 Watt (according to a digital power meter) while Gaming and also in Blender, so no need for extreme power supplies.
Rest is same as you got, AIO, some SSDs/HDDs etc.

I bought 1,000W a couple of years ago, it's better to have the surplus headroom to protect your system to be honest, plus it allows more headroom for bigger GPU upgrades later down the line.

@@knottymullet4725 You'll be more than alright with that in theory, I'm running an RTX 3080 on mine with the entire system including the card overclocked and not once has it cut it out on me.
What you need to watch is the _quality_ of the power supply. Just do your research, never just rely on someone's word, or you'll be relegated back to the console space.

It is very very very rare that your CPU and GPU are both at their max power for real work not benchmarking. For me , I play flight sim 2020 and adobe premier , it never happened once
Gainward leaked the specs for their 3080s and 3090s and their recommendation is 750w or better so your recommendation is spot on.

I have a 650w 80+ gold power supply and want a 3080 20 gb. I am upgrading my gpu before everything else which means it will be a bottleneck, but that means the other stuff doesn’t draw a lot of power. Do you think it would be enough?
It will likely be enough power, but you won't have much headroom at all, and I wouldn't try too much overclocking.
But does your CPU consume 65 watts or 125?

Honestly, i'd say no. Even if it runs, your PSU will be taking damage over time.. Meaning suddenly your system will give out on you.
750W should be bare minimum if you're thinking of picking up the 20gb 3080.
I'd wait until you can upgrade both PSU and GPU so you dont run into any issues just to be on the safe side either way!

I've got a 3080 Ti with an RM850x PSU, and everything has been fine so far, but I also have a bunch of RGB, 6 RGB fans, and one M.2 NVMe drive
On outer visions PSU calculator it shows you need a 1000w psu if you are going to overclock both the CPU and the GPU (3090).

I'm glad I got my corsair RM1000 (1000W) years ago. They're sold out on Amazon. From there it jumps to the platinum which can be over $250. Keep the efficiency curve low.

You'll definitely be fine. I have an OC'd 3700x + 4 x 8GB RGB memory with an OC'd GTX 1080 Ti (~320W) and an RX 550 (~50W) with an EVGA 650W B3. I've run this setup for about half a year now without once having any issues even while stress testing. Adding up the 100% load power consumption with all my parts brings be to around 562-570 watts, leaving a headroom of well over 50 watts. Any decent quality 650w power supply should be able to handle that fine, and I'm assuming that a 80+ platinum Seasonic is waaay higher quality than my budget EVGA 650 B3.

Nvidia recommends a 650 Watts PSU for the RTX 3070 and a 750 Watts PSU for the 3080 & 3090.
For proof Do this:

Seasonic's calculator on their website is broken. When I filled everything out (including a 3090) it recommended me an 850w PSU, but when you go to their recommended PSU page for the RTX 30 series, it says a 1000w PSU if you have a 3090
They are going to up the wattage because higher wattage means more money for them. Honestly, eight core and below can run on as low as 650w with oc cpu and undervolted 3080 and 3090. 750w for peace of mind. It’s when you’re going super high end like ryzen 9 or 10900k / 11900k that you probably will want to get a gold 850w as those are priced reasonably.

I bought a corsair 850w gold + psu for the next gen cards. I was bang on the money. My entire system uses 300w flat out with a 150w 5600xt. I use a watt meter to get real results so my system only draw is 150w. Add an over clocked 3090 even at 400-450 watts to my 150 watts worse case is 600 watts I have 250 watts to play with. Job done.
Using TDP to calculate the power supply requirement is not reliable because they said that the rtx 30 series can draw up to double the tdp power at peak time. if you wanna overlock it then 1000w power supply is absolutely needed

My go to PSU on a regular build has been 850W and on my ITX builds 750W because it the best you can get in a true SFX PSU). Even have a 1000W PSU in my main PC right now, only because EVGA had a sale for $90. Overkill, yeah.... but I have no concerns about upgrading to a 30 series card.
Psu calculator used to be much more accurate, it says my system requires over 50% more power than what it actually pulls from the socket.
That's with cinebench and furmark running on a 10 year old psu that was specced for a system that used to consume a lot more (Around 40% load on the psu lol).

I had to reduce my power output on the gpu by 15% using nzxt. (Cam) software. It was shutting down under 100% load. As soon as the cart did its self overclock the computer turned off.
I'm trying an 850, but I won't be overclocking the card and cpu at the same time.
I'm aiming for a 3070 at most, so chill.
Now if only GPUs were actually available.

I'd calc for 3 HDD drives since many people still use them for their game libraries/general slow storage. Each of them use 6-8W when running.
But I guess all together that's probably negligible.
