As you mentioned, it was definitely pricier than other Latin countries but stability and peace does come with a price tag. I hope to visit again soon.

I lived in Panama from November 8. 1999 until April 2, 2021. Panama has gotten extremely expensive, crime has gotten worse, Panamanians are extremely jealous of you if you are from USA, Canada or Europe. I left because it got to be real BORING! I have to agree with you Lloyd. I've been living in Panama now for 4 years and it's been my personal experience the people here only tolerate us Americans but don't celebrate us. Meaning the Panamanians for the most part are very clickess. If you're not from Panama or Latin your pretty much ignored. I can walk into a room and be the best dressed and the women and men will stare at you with that who he think he is look but will not crack a smile and forget about speaking. I've walked into many elevators and spoke but the Panamanian women will just simply ignore you which is really rude, PERIOD. But when a Latin guy steps on the same elevator and speaks they speak back to him. It's obvious here that has a single black man the people of Panama aren't nice at all. And believe me this has been my experiences for the past 4 years. Yes they pretend they want us here that's why the government offers the amazing "friendly nations" visa but somebody forgot to tell the people of the nation to actually be friendly. So from my perspective doesn't matter how much the country has to offer when the people you encounter daily are rude, dismissive and disrespectful the country isn't a place I want to be. So I've made it clear to all my US friends what my experience has been so they will be informed before considering this country as a place to live permanently... I've visited Colombia and the people there are so much more welcoming then the people of Panama any day...

Thank you for the information. I’m from Spain and my wife from Colombia, currently living in Europe and looking into Mexico, Panama, and Colombia to retire.
No doubt the fact that you don’t have to pay taxes in Panama is the main attraction.
I believe what you have experienced is similar in almost every country of the world, it’s just that in some places it’s more obvious.
I doubt Mexican enjoy all the Expats, just the money they bring. Same happens in my home country, Spain, full of Brits, Germans, and extremely conservative Scandinavians, plus all the tourists that go to Spain to do things they would never consider doing back home.
Nationalism is growing all around the world.
Best of luck if you move to Colombia, probably Cartagena and Medellin are the best options imo.

You only have to be 18 to qualify for pensionado visa, BUT not allowed to work. Other countries including Ecuador have it. Panamá requirement is $1000/month and gives airfare discount of 25%; Ecuador (also uses USD) income requirement is only $400/mo and airfare discount of 50%.
In certain areas such as the road to Almirante they sometimes have protests blocking the road like what happens near Cali.

as for government stability and economic stability, you are correct on both counts. there are occasional protests, and there were certainly a number of them during the pandemic lockdowns, but having the Balboa tied to the US dollar at one to one means that there is a great deal of economic stability, however it also means that as inflation goes up in the usa, USA goods go up in price in panama.
on the question of government stability, that will never be an issue again. unlike a lot of Latin American countries, where tin pot dictators can pretty easily take over, the Panama canal ensures that the Panamanian government will always be stable because both the US government and the Chinese government will never allow any instability because that may interfere with the functioning of the canal.

    • @yoyix93

at the end of your video you talk about how Panama is pretty well suited for retirees, not only from the low crime and great weather but also from the tax advantage standpoint.
I am many decades away from retirement age, but having permanent residency in panama, and not residing in the usa, gives me huge tax advantages no matter where else I travel in the world versus my us tax burden.
it also allows me to go back to the USA and work for several months out of the year, for an American company on American soil, and still be able to pay zero federal income tax.
so from a tax standpoint, regardless of the other benefits, please don't imagine that it is just the seniors who benefit from permanent residency in panama.

How long can you work in the States and not pay income tax??

    • @sosodave4192
      @sosodave4192 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Faze Three -- technically you could work in the USA up to a couple of days short of 6 months, however my accountant advises not doing so for more than a couple of months realistically to avoid any issues.
however, in my particular case, I own a home and cars in panama, I have a corporation in Panama and a bank account, and I have been a permanent resident here for five years.
conversely, other than some family members, I have absolutely nothing tying me to the USA besides the fact that I am a citizen.
so that would Bode very well in my favor even if I were to work for 4 or 5 months, because the IRS could never claim that I have any type of economic ties to the USA other than the fact that I happen to go there a few months out of the year and work.
perhaps one of these days I will put it to the test to see just how far I can push it.

    • @sosodave4192
      @sosodave4192 2 ปีที่แล้ว

that actually asks some really interesting text questions that I don't have good answers for.
a couple of key components are that Panama has a territorial tax system, which means it only taxes you on income derived from Panamanian soil, while the USA has a global tax system, and wants a piece of the action from everywhere in the world.
another component is that neither country allows for dual citizenship, so even though you have dual citizenship, in the USA already and in Panama by the nature of your parents being panamanian, neither country will acknowledge the other countries citizenship.
which means that the citizenship issue is less of an issue versus your tax residency.
keep in mind that I am not an accountant myself, nor a tax attorney, so I can only give you my back of the napkin ideas from the conversations I have had.
having said that, assuming that you don't own your truck in the usa and don't keep an apartment or anything else there, and literally are only in the country during the time when you are driving on the road or hanging in cheap motels between driving gigs for a short time, I'm going to guess that your situation would basically be the same as mine.
that being that by law, you are allowed to spend just under 6 months every year in the USA and still be able to get by with your federal tax exclusion, however you don't necessarily want to push that issue all the way up to the 6-month mark, and you especially don't want to push that issue making all of your money in the usa.
the interesting tidbit is that, as a foreign resident in panama, the first 108,000 of your personally earned income is USA Federal tax free each year.
and this holds true regardless of the source of the income, whether it's from doing things online, working for a Panamanian company, or working for a USA company.
in the USA you will be required to pay taxes out of every paycheck, but at the end of the year you will get all of that money back other than your 15.3% self-employment tax that goes directly into your social security and Medicare fund.
but unlike all the rest of your federal taxes, at least in theory, you would end up getting back the money you put into social security eventually.
toss me an email at davewlink@gmail.com and I will get you connected with my USA CPA who lives in Panama City.
he specializes in the tax situation of folks just like us who are living in panama.

from a tax standpoint, depending on your home country, you don't actually need to obtain citizenship in Panama to take advantage of that. simply having permanent residency reduces my federal tax burden that I owe to the USA down to zero.
as always, taxes are a tricky item, but having permanent residency in Panama definitely has a whole lot of tax advantages for USA citizens.
as for becoming a citizen of panama, that is exceptionally difficult and most expats from the USA never even bother going to that extent, since you can stay in the country forever with your permanent residency and still enjoy all of the tax benefits, even without full-blown citizenship.

Panama just stands head and shoulders above the rest of Latin America as being a desirable place to retire. Economic stability, safety, friendliness of the people and friendliness towards retirees all get the highest marks in Panama. Taxation is an issue that is not as clear cut as many Americans think. While Panama will not tax you on your worldwide income, only your income from business or employment in Panama, the United States will. While you can use the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion to exclude $112,000 of that income from US federal taxation, you are not exempt from paying Social Security and Medicare taxes on that worldwide income because Panama and the USA do not have a tax treaty eliminating double taxation. I can't tell you how many TH-cams I have seen where erroneous information on taxation of Americans in Panama is given.
