  • In this video, Thomas shares his experiences of moving to Panama and living in the El Cangrejo neighborhood of Panama City, Panama.
    El Cangrejo is known for its vibrant nightlife, with hip bars, laid-back brewpubs and busy casinos, many clustered around Via Argentina street. Upscale global eateries, smart cafes and laid-back coffee shops dot the area, along with shopping malls selling mainstream fashion. Leafy Andres Bello Park attracts joggers and walkers, while a small green square nearby is dominated by a sculpture of Albert Einstein’s head.

    I also love El Cangrejo. No car needed. We walk to Price Smart, several grocery stores, restaurants, dentist, doctor, university for Spanish class, produce stand (Donde Arvey). We Uber to places further away. Metro is nearby, both Via Espana and El Carmen stations. $0,35 will get you to Albrook mall on the Metro, 24 cents if you use a jubilado discount. Our rent is half what we paid in California and it gets us a high rise 3 bed 3.5 bath on a high floor with view of city AND sea. Our highest electric bill was $46 following a heat wave. Typically it has been $24 as we keep our windows open throughout the 1750 sft condo. I have used an expat health service twice for home visits with English speaking doctors. Cost was about $56. Pinch me, I still say after 6 months in PC.

    My electric bill here in the Pacific Northwest was $161 a month and has been that for the last 18 months. I was notified that beginning this month it will be $225 per month. I live alone. I keep the temperature between 71 to 74 all year long. I have a small fish tank(50 gal). And I have a PHEV. Nothing has changed. It is getting harder and harder to afford to live in the US. I’m scheduled for the Panama Relocation Tour in mid-December

    The beef's a little "chewy" because, like world reknowned Argentine beef it's from grass fed cattle. Not as fatty as the beef you're accustomed to in America, which is from grain fed cattle. You're taste is accustomed to fatty meat.

    This is good info and interesting for me because I just came back from a Panamá City trip where I also stayed in El Cangrejo. I was planning to stay on the waterfront, but decided I would like to be close to the amenities I wanted. I like the mix of restaurants and the central location of this neighborhood. You might have a neighbor in the near future.

    I'd like to give a shout for two of my favorite restaurants in El Cangrejo...
    Soban Korean on Calle 49A, just a few steps off Via Argentina. This awesome restaurant is run by a hard working Korean couple and the food is delicious!
    Next is Sen Vietnamese on Jose Isaac Fabrega just a few steps from the Principe Hotel. The food is fabulous and authentic and occasionally you will hear Vietnamese spoken in the kitchen.
    Okay for a bonus I'll throw in Pub21 right on Via Argentina just next to the Andres Belo (sp?) park. Great steaks and anything else you'd miss from the States. Ciao!

    This is such a huge help - many thanks! My wife and I are within a few years of retirement and relocation. We have a dear friend who lives in Paso Canoas, right on the Panama border, whose wife is from David. We've been thinking about relocating to the southern C.R. area, and while that's still high on the list of options, we've added northern Panama (Boquete, quite possibly) to that list. @alkubbo1291 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am retired and have lived two floors up from Avenida Balboa (busiest avenue in Panama) on one bedroom apartment with a balcony area. At night, I could not hear any of the traffic except during Carnival week. But the carnival floats were done by 11pm and I was able to see it all from my balcony. I had a blast watching it all while drinking Rum Abuelo (Ron Panameño) so the noise never bothered me.

    • @al1665
      @al1665 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends, if you have a bar/restaurant downstairs or surrounding you, the noise will go up. A lot of the older buildings don't go high enough to avoid it. Do your research before moving in. Cangrejo is awesome because it's the most centric part of Panama, but you could get stuck in a noisy place because of it.
