I spent a week in Panama last month. Despite it being the rainy season I loved it. Always carry an umbrella for rain and also protection from the sun. Comparing Panama prices to Mexico is not an equal comparison despite exchage rates. People need to realize Panama is the most expensive country in Central America. It is also the safest but like anywhere you need to be aware of your surroundings. We went to the Panama canal museum and the history was interesting. Also saw a Picasso exhibit in Casco Viejo. Enjoyed walking around the different areas of the city. The fish market to Casco Viejo and the downtown areas. Took a ferry ride to Taboga and enjoyed the ride and explring the island. Everyone I met throughout our trip was nice and helpful. At night we stayed in and enjoyed making dinner in our VRBO home. It may have cost a bit more than a hotel but had su h a wonderful view and was very peaceful and a long day. One thing I wish I knew before going was more Spinish. I knew enough to get by but would have liced to understand more if what the locals were telling me. Beautiful country that definitely takes more than a week to explore. Honestly. Air B and B doesn’t give you an exact address until you pay which for me ; is not good and also as opposed to a hotel which does give you the exact address. Places to avoid in Panama. El Chorrillo ,Santa Ana ,La Cuchilla ,Calidonia ,Barraza Good places: El Dorado ,Punta Pacifica ,Paitilla ,El Cangrejo ,Vía Argentina Bethania ,Albrook ,Clayton
most times you can ask the host on air bnb for the address and explain its for safety reasons and they will give it to you. I have never had a host refuse that information and with air bnb you can see the exact room or apartment you are getting. in a hotel you might get a room that has a view of the next building 10 feet away.
I do NOT agree with various things, I'm from Panama. You can eat very cheap at any "Fonda" you have to ask the locals. Supermarket is way less expensive than eating out, the cheapest supermarkets are "machetazo" and "xtra", but super 99 and Rey are ok. You should stay near a subway if you don't want to spend a lot in a hotel right in the city and still get to the center for very cheap and very fast.
Yeah I am from Panama living in Boston over 30 years true there are places to eat for cheap, but he is talking about for the tourist stand point it is extremely expensive
@steve-ww6ut That is a 6+ hour drive. You can take a domestic flight into David from PTY, take a tour bus from Albrook (cheap) or rent a car and drive yourself. I have seen qoutes in the $400 range to be driven that distance one way.
@@Peacekeeper150 That 400 is pricey. I doubt if gas is expensive. 6 hours in a small car is probably less than $100 for fuel. I think for that much I would fly it. I know the bus is around 10 hours and can't be very comfortable. It is what it is. Do you know what a plane ticket is?
We love Panama! We had the best time, stayed two weeks, a ton to do. Felt safe, we stayed in a neighborhood and ran into the same people from the corner coffee shop. We stayed in a hotel but met friends who stayed in a Airbnb in an apartment building. We were on the cusp of rainy season and got drenched one day.
I did airbnb & hotels on my first trip & I prefer airbnb. I stayed in almost every part of the city but I prefer staying in Casco Viejo. Ita a good time and everything is in walking distance or a short taxi ride
Glad your stay was nice, funny thing for me. I've been living here for 22 years, and I hate going to Casco Viejo, its the biggest pain in the ass to get there, if you disrespect your bootleg parking guy "bien cuidao" you get your car busted up, the road to get their is awful, its extremely far into the city in regards to where I live. Overall great for tourists, but awful if you have your own car and want to drive there comfortably.
I was considering that hotel. May you describe your experience please? Did you choose all inclusive. Was it quiet, any day/night entertainment, close to the city, and how was the food!
I was stationed in Panama for 3 and half years. I was stationed at Ft Davis near Colon. Spent alot of time at The Johnnie B Club in Rio Abajo. Panamanians are really friendly and are great friends.
We stayed at a 2 bedroom apartment with 2 bathrooms, kitchen, living room and washer and dryer for $60/night. It was right downtown. And we cooked two meals a day and ate out one meal. Relatively inexpensive trip.
I live now 4 years in Panama. I got stranded in the pandemic and just decided to stay. I can do it because I am an old guy. Always worked hard to earn my money. So I go spending it differently than most people. How much can I get for $1? On top, I check what the monthly income of a worker is in the country. I am originally from Germany. Now my toothpaste comparison (my friends can not hear it anymore 😅) : 75ml Colgate is in Germany around €1 - In Canada, what was my home for 14 years, the same, on sale for 0.99CAD. Compare it to the even cross income of 3,000 a month in both countries. Now in Panama. The same toothpaste amount cost you in the supermarkets $4! On sale sometimes $3. The cross income is $650 a months. Explain that please. 😮
@@ms.jacques Hello. I do know that. But that wasn’t the point. The economic base knowledge does teach us, that prices get reflected from the statistics of the countries cross income. If in Germany or Canada the toothpaste would be $4 - that would be kinda ok. But people would not buy it. $4 in Panama - there is something wrong. But this is my opinion.
@@holgermessner851 probably because the toothpaste is made in the US and has to be imported. its the same reason why electronics are very expensive in Mexico despite the income levels being lower. you are thinking too hard about this. just accept it and adjust your life to live with the realities you find. another good example I can think of is Turks and Caicos Islands... they advertise that there are no taxes there to entice people to vacation and move there. the thing they dont tell you is there is a 35% import duty on everything that comes into the country... which is basically everything other than the local beer because they are islands. it was the most expensive place I have ever visited and yet much of the population lives near or below the poverty level.
@@RedroomStudios Well. I don’t speak a lot of Spanish. So I watched locals shopping. They do not buy toothpaste in the supermarkets. They buy toothpaste in the local “dollar stores”. A funny story. “Get it in the dollar store…” What do we none locals do? We take our cellphones and search Dollarstore. It came up in no time. Dollarstore Florida, 1,708 miles…. ! I drove the streets up and down. No sign. We got out of the car and started asking. People pointed in all directions. I got nuts - until we figured out: All the small stores in the street are so called Dollar stores. Go and figure that out. So the toothpaste is $1.25 in the “dollar stores “. - And the big supermarket chains take advantage of people who don’t pay attention to prices. 150ml Colgate is around $4.80… 2x 75ml is on sale each $1.29. So it is cheaper to buy 2 smaller packages. My girlfriend, Colombiana, lives around 18 years in Panama and she always took the 150ml. When I explained it to her: “You see what I mean? They took all the years my money. They all corrupt in Panama!” ;-) When I didn’t worked in Canada and had time to browse the supermarkets in Alberta, I figured out that it was cheaper to shop from Monday to Wednesday. In the night to Thursday, the businesses changed the price tags on the shelves. Thursday to Sundays, it was best to stay away. I explained that to friends and neighbors. It saves some dollars over a month if you know how this supermarkets work.
RIP everyone everywhere. I started visiting Mexico from 1962 to 2011, and I obeyed all your laws, and even lived there part time as a second home. Like all people, I interacted with the good, bad and ugly, but God was always there for me, to help others. Always write down what you spend, and do not be greedy and stingy, and help non beggars on the quiet. Please keep written, audio, and video journals. everyday, and please dte, and the day of the week also. Seems like you showed food prices in malls place where it would be higher than the corner family owned restaurants. Or other restaurants that serve Panamanian food. 😊
@lailas.3205 Hi!!! Yes! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Panama! The food was good, the people were nice and helpful and the country is beautiful! I plan on visiting again to see some areas I wasn't able to get to like Colón and a couple of the indigenous parishes.
@lailas.3205 as far as recommendations, if you like seafood you must visit Mercado de Mariscos. Plan a trip or tour in Casco Viejo. Definitely visit the Panama Canal. It was a good experience. You can also check out rhe Amador Causeway for shopping and dining. The Hop-on Hop -Off tour bus will take you there along with several tourist spots in between.
You can eat cheap in Panama. You are in Panama City so prices are inflated like time square. There are mom and pop restaurants near Via Espana that get meals for $6/7
Absolutely loved Panama. Was there with my wife and two young daughters about 3 months ago. Stayed in a large hotel for part of the time (Panama City, Cangrejo), AirBnB part of the time (El Valle), and a boutique hotel (Bocas del Toro). Felt safe the whole time and was able to spend lightly or lavishly in all three places. If you are with kids, Amador and Viejo are the best!
I went last year end of September and I stayed at the Marriott Executive Apartments that had an amazing pool, great staff, free Wi-Fi, great food and views in the city. I went to the W for brunch once but otherwise it was completely worth the stay at the Marriott.. I had a one bedroom apartment with two beds, living room, and small kitchen.. I went to restaurants over the causeway and shopped for souvenirs in Balboa from the Moolas. Didn’t spend much at all. Very reasonable. Ubers were criminally cheap - I lost sleep at how cheap they were cthuu. Dollar is 1 to 1. Overalll be respectful of other cultures. Learning theirs culture is the purpose of traveling and not trying to bring ours there. Thankfully and full disclosure, my friend who is a native has a brother who lives there and she flew in to meet me. Good times!! Placencia Belize is also amazing with great value for the dollar.
Great video...informative...why did you not include some information about the canal. A lot of people want to see the Panama canal as it's a world class engineering wonder. Love your content...👍
The last time I visited Panama, I survived two weeks with around USD 500. This is the minimum the government requires tourists to go over there. I stayed in an Airbnb as well and had a good experience (I stayed on the Av Ricardo J Alfaro, also known as the Tumba Muerto). It was less than most of the hotels I found in the city. I cooked a lot and bought most of my groceries in El Machetazo. I think they have the lowest prices in Panama, but I'm unsure. I would purchase straightforward ingredients, so I didn't eat super luxurious. Still, it is an option if you want to save money. I recommend splurging on the food where possible because Panama has a lot of variety, but at the time, I wasn't there to try new food or anything like that. In various parts of Panama City and Colon, small buffet-style restaurants will serve you a good plate for around $5, with a drink included. I would typically get water, but in some places, they have juices, Coke, etc. There is one in San Miguelito close to the metro station and a cafeteria in the Los Andes Mall in Panama City. I don't know how many are in the center or the more wealthy parts of the country. I would avoid eating in Multiplaza, Alta Plaza, or Costa del Este because they charge higher prices. Many Panamanians I met told me they think $10 for a plate of food is expensive. I always took public transit everywhere, including other parts of the country like Colon. I would only take Uber, Indriver, and Didi at night for safety reasons. In terms of security, the thing that you need to know about Panama is that it is one of the most unequal countries in the world (it is in the top 5). So, you have millionaires that live like kings in the financial center of Panama City, but you also have a lot of slums. It's very important that you research the areas you will visit because it is possible that one block in Panama is safe, but the one next to it is filled with crime. Wherever I'm at, I always have my personal belongings in my underwear, I wear my backpack in front, and I distrust most people I come across on the streets. I have felt relatively safe in Panama City but very unsafe in Colon. I would only go to Colon to the Tax-Free Zone (unless you have a local guide that can show you around) because many Panamanians have told me horror stories about what happens over there. I speak Spanish fluently, which helps a lot in getting reasonable prices. Having contacts is a plus, but if you need connections, you can get a lot of helpful information about the country if you speak Spanish. The only issue is that their Spanish is kind of "weird." Even though I have problems understanding it and have said it most of my life if you can speak English, deduce some of their slang. For example, cuara is quarter, focop is f'd up, fren is friend, etc. I hope the information helps. In general, I like going to Panama. It is a beautiful country with a lot to offer!

Yo your video was maad informative. I’m going to Panama for the first time next week. I didn’t know that it would be rainy season…😂. I looked at the forecast while watching your video and it looks like rain and thunderstorms everyday for me. But I will make the best of it nonetheless. I also have an airbnb booked. 🤷🏾♂️ never even thought about checking the hotels because of the other traveling I’ve done. But you have given us all some great tips and that is really appreciated!👍🏾
Thanks for this valuable informative content. I've stayed at El Principe and it was conveniently close to Prado, Trapiche, Caribe, Cuban, Empanadas, and their Japanese. Is the pool open now? It was being renovated then. Your advice for itinerary planning length of stay, activities, and safety are also appreciated.
Bro i was out there last year for nov it was raining cats on dogs . I mean it would pour hard rain for like 4 hours straight then the damn sun would hit 😂😂
Your money can go very far in Panama if you’re not looking for the same food you’d purchase in America. Mall food court meals, wings and pizza is absolutely going to be close to US price.REAL PANAMANIAN food(which was not shown in this video) is not comparable in price as US cuisine. Groceries can be pricey again if you’re purchasing the same exact brands as US, due to being imported. Aside of all the cost of prepared or groceries are a fraction of the price. In regards to hotels they absolutely do pay attention, the Príncipe is not a major hotel it’s located in Cangrejo. Also reggaeton originated in Panama El General, Nando Boom etc.
That's going to be the same anywhere in the world. Though there may be some hotels in known 'chica' pick-up areas that may allow bringing companions to your room, but I don't know which ones if there are any. For reference, there used to be a big hotel that was kown for accepting bringing companions to your room, that closed. Another thing are motels within the city, but not sure if that works with you all the same.
I have found several airbnbs that are very nice and cost much less than a hotel. That hotel you showed looks equivalent to a US Motel 6. I was lost on comparing currency to Mexico. You're not in Mexico.
I think he was probably at Praia in Amador, on the Causeway. I say probably because I'm a "of the land" Panamanian, and barely ever hangout in the tourists areas.
I don't like people doing videos to get money and talk about my beautiful country where I was born if you don't like go somewhere else .🇵🇦 I love my country. ❤️🇵🇦🇵🇦🌹🌹🌹🌹
The perfect country for each person is the one where they feel happy and develop their potential to the fullest. Panama is not perfect, nor is the USA, Mexico or Costa Rica.
I agree with your methodology. I told a friend this and he said that he researched and had an air b&b prices around 60 dollars and up and got a great hotel for 40 dollars in town.
The place is Praia, in an area of the city called 'El Causeway', what you see in this video is he talking over a clip of another video where he actually talks about that restaurant.
Thank you for giving your opinions! However...anyone can say that hotels cost less than Airbnbs, but I just checked on some condo bnbs that were $425-$525 a month. I see nothing comparable in a local hotel. You give no evidence for any of your statements, why not? PLUS they have lots of reviews, unlike most hotels. As for the food, you compare things to NY prices, which means zip to those of us who live in better, less expensive states/countries.
definitely not my experience with hotels vs airbnb's. hotels I would say are about 20-25% more expensive than air bnb's. I'm in Panama now and staying at both - 2 hotels and 2 air bnb's during a 1 month trip. and I dont consider a hotel room nicer than an apartment with a kitchen in it.

Everybody in the comments trying to be nice to you. I'm not trying to be rude but you sound pessimistic. That's a beautiful country with lots of things to do. and EVERY country has its bad places. You need to go back when you're in a better mood. Ok, so here's my take. Great video. No hate here but.... Why go to PANAMA and ONLY talk about AMERICAN food? smh. For example - When people visit MEXICO they talk about eating MEXICAN food or the Mexican experience. Yes, Panama uses the U.S. dollar as the currency. That's the only currency, except for some coins. However, EVERYTHING in PANAMA is wayyyyy cheaper than in the U.S. Sound to me as if you did not get the whole experience. Everyone else who makes videos about my native country says otherwise. So I think you need to go back and experience Panama and stop looking for familiarity. I mean... Chinese American food (LOL).
Sorry but this is not a realistic view of Panama. You are talking abt Airbnb but obviously in Hotel Principe. Also, you are in El Cangrejo which is NOT the real Panamá. It's a pass through to the real Pty. Go see El Chorrilo. Way to much mis-info here
Yes, but at the same time places like el Cangrejo are where most of the tourists will be. Don't expect the regular tourist to be hanging out in El Chorrillo, or anywhere beyond the banking area and its surrounding neighborhoods. More 'real Panama City' places have their kind of tourists.
I do not like hotels. I like Airbnbl. I like that feeling of being like in a home. and having a seperate living room, kitchen and othe spaxe, just one big room big boring looking hotel room, Sorry hotel room are boring looking. disagree
I am panamanian, and every time I look at English searches for Panama. There are some major misinformation from certain people. People have said that Panama is like a Spanish Jamaica and that is the biggest mistake that some people have done and the ones that have been saying this are usually people that are of Jamaican descendents that live in New York, and other parts of the northeast, or even in the west coast and their Great grandparents or grandparents had some affiliation that had to do with the panama canal construction for a temporary job and some of the Jamaican immigrants decided to stay during the early 1900s, but a lot of them also migrated to the United States with the help of the United States military, and government, because of the racism in Panama. And the thing is that those same people today want to be the face of representation for Panama, but yet not inform or misinform other people that Panama is like a Spanish Jamaica or that it's primarily black and what that does is that it misinforms other people might think about and then when they go to Panama, they realize that it is not Spanish Jamaica and that instead it is a Latino country with a lot more in common with Colombia or Costa Rica as it's their neighbors. There is a difference between someone Antillean, and an Afro-Panamanian. Afro Panamanians have been in Panama for a long time since the 1600s. The groups of Antilleans from Jamaica and Trinidad that stayed in Panama contributed to giving Spanish reggae, and Soca as an influence to the radio stations by trying to integrate into panamanian culture. It's why it was not accepted at first, and its why Panama did not become as popular with Spanish reggae as Puerto Rico did with Reggaeton. In fact, Panamanians, listen to Reggaeton, salsa, merengue Bachata FAR FAR more any other Hispanic country outside of the Spanish Caribbean islands besides Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. So it's why whenever you plan on wanting to go to Panama, It is best to look at videos of the culture and the food from ground level with people actually recording being in Panama, that way you can see if it fits your budget and needs whenever you go. You do not want to go to a country that you were not expecting. . . That's why you've heard some people claim that panama is very expensive because here they are thinking that they're going to go to Jamaica or to a majority black country and then they realize that Panama is extremely international and has a lot of Hispanic heritage and culture literally, in every corner and everywhere you go... I don't know why there is a trend of primarily women, but also some men claiming to be Dominican or Panamanian, and they are nothing more than just African-American. There is nothing wrong with being your race or heritage, because it is more authentic to be who you are rather than trying to integrate for fallacious reasons.
I’m not Panamanian, but I do see that trope often. I understand why you wrote this that would be rather annoying hearing over and over when it is barely a half truth and not the whole story. Jamaican-Americans can be problematic when it comes to history and their people’s involvement in things. Jamaican-Americans do that with the story on the creation of hip hop and try to take credit for creating that genre of music when that is not the truth at all.
@@odariopeart9840 hi there, and shout out to Jamaica! There is somewhat an issue with misrepresentation in the United States regarding Panamanian people and culture and this is why some of us have had to come out and give the correct information so that people are not confused or even misguided.. Let's say if you wanted to go to Panama to go take a visit and someone tells you beforehand that Panama is exactly like a Spanish Jamaica and then you go over there and once you do, you will start to fear that you feel very foreign because you are in a Latino country where the music culture and the food is different.. Well, yes, you might encounter maybe some similarities to Jamaica when it comes to even some of its food and in Panama reggae music can be heard but it's not over empowered by salsa and merengue, which is the dominant music in Panama outside of Panamanian folklore music called Tipico (Panamanian Cumbia) Someone even said that the majority of Panamanians are black and I'm gonna show you a video of the protest going on in Panama because of the Canadian mining and there are millions of people protesting and I'm gonna show you the video so you can see the kind of crowd and see that the majority of people of Panama even look like Colombians or next-door Costa Ricans with its native people and its mixture of European/Native American dominance, and of course there are racial people that are of European/native Americans/African heritage, and a couple of Afro Panamanians on the video. I'm gonna show you with the link th-cam.com/video/eV6_LeIUtF8/w-d-xo.html
It's because his brand of music is mainstream reggeaton and he got big (no pun intended haha) rather quickly in that scene, working with the big dogs in the genre who are mostly Puerto Rico based. It's become more of a trend from Panamanian artists to lean that way for some time now, but no one has gotten as big internationally as Sech.

I went to Panama 2yrs ago it’s real smooth.I stay at Decamaron
I like how you went to Panama City, Panama to eat mall Chinese-American food

@@masongrainger2271 I had chicken fried steak when I was there. Let that sink in.
Everything is kinda expensive but as panamanians we manage to make those 650 last.

Seems like you showed food prices in malls place where it would be higher than the corner family owned restaurants. Or other restaurants that serve Panamanian food. 😊
Thank you for stating this. When I visit next week, I want to eat authentic Panamanian food and not what I can buy in the US to eat.
Do you have any recommendations?
@@MzBatyahhope you enjoyed your visit! Any recommendations? I'm going in a few weeks 😊

Very useful advice but if you stay longer than a month then Airbnb is cheaper than hotels.
Torres de Alba hotel in El Cangrejo is nice and have nice kitchens

Informative video. There are some amazing airbnbs in Panama especially away from city.
agree. even in Casco Viejo I was astounded by the quality of the choices. it seems highly competitive like each place is trying to out do the others.
I was just in panama with my family, its a beautiful country and cheap to shop to me everything was great i will visit there soon in the future.👍
I really loved Panama 🇵🇦 city Airbnbs are actually quite reasonable. I dislike hotels but he’s right the hotel prices are quite cheap.
I am Jamaican btw 😊
Thank you so much for the information.

The main problem with hotels though from what I'm hearing is that most of them are not Chicka friendly. Is this true?
That's going to be the same anywhere in the world. Though there may be some hotels in known 'chica' pick-up areas that may allow bringing companions to your room, but I don't know which ones if there are any. For reference, there used to be a big hotel that was kown for accepting bringing companions to your room, that closed.
Another thing are motels within the city, but not sure if that works with you all the same.
Thats not true they are very helpful and friendly.

The perfect country for each person is the one where they feel happy and develop their potential to the fullest. Panama is not perfect, nor is the USA, Mexico or Costa Rica.

Where is the Panama sign
The Panamanian Balboa doesn't really exist. The US dollar is the only currency.

This video could've been 7 mins long. You were long winded and took forever to get to the main points.
I have never heard blk people say they wanna follow a yt country. Ever. Where are YOU living that YOU keep hearing this?
@@m.b.4551yeah I never in my life heard a black person do that either
Indeed this is true Panama 🇵🇦 is nothing like my country Jamaica 🇯🇲
@@odariopeart9840 hi there, and shout out to Jamaica! There is somewhat an issue with misrepresentation in the United States regarding Panamanian people and culture and this is why some of us have had to come out and give the correct information so that people are not confused or even misguided..
Let's say if you wanted to go to Panama to go take a visit and someone tells you beforehand that Panama is exactly like a Spanish Jamaica and then you go over there and once you do, you will start to fear that you feel very foreign because you are in a Latino country where the music culture and the food is different..
Well, yes, you might encounter maybe some similarities to Jamaica when it comes to even some of its food and in Panama reggae music can be heard but it's not over empowered by salsa and merengue, which is the dominant music in Panama outside of Panamanian folklore music called Tipico (Panamanian Cumbia)
Someone even said that the majority of Panamanians are black and I'm gonna show you a video of the protest going on in Panama because of the Canadian mining and there are millions of people protesting and I'm gonna show you the video so you can see the kind of crowd and see that the majority of people of Panama even look like Colombians or next-door Costa Ricans with its native people and its mixture of European/Native American dominance, and of course there are racial people that are of European/native Americans/African heritage, and a couple of Afro Panamanians on the video. I though such was puertorican hahaha
