My understanding about local-grown fruits and vegetables is due to Panama's high heat/humidity, especially during the monsoon season, compounded by the voracious jurassic insect population, pesticides are the rule vs the exception. Therefore, certified organic fruits and vegetables are imported, which increases costs significantly.

@@elorenzo98 Most places I know of with high population density are expensive. The more people that show up in an area, the higher prices will go. It's based on the law of supply and demand. And once prices rise, they almost never go back down again. There are other channels that do the same thing. And as a result numerous countries have since changed their immigration/expat policies as prices have risen, and now people don't want to go there because things have gotten expensive. Smart people already know that Panama has a lot to offer; they don't need anyone to tell them.

In your introduction you mention Panama is an affordable retirement location? I watched the video twice and you must have a different version of affordable than most people since you compare only the most expensive parts of the US to Panama. If a quick search on a cost of living website (numbeo is one) is done, it clearly shows Panama is the most expensive Latin country ( along with Costa Rica) there is. Affordable compared to what? Mexico, Colombia and Argentina are much more affordable if cost of living, only, is considered. If the average retiree relies on social security for his income, I would not use the word affordable to describe what you have presented when rent prices alone in some of the examples you use, would take up a high percentage of that income. I looked at your video list selection and I would like to see your take on a specific video on the language challenges, cultural adjustment and what percentage of those who do make the move last. One study I read indicated within 2 years about half return home. After about 5 years most will stay. I am curious what transitional issues a single person would need, as compared to a couple. I am pleased that you offered a very realistic assessment of the true cost of living in Panama because most channels paint a rosey picture without offering much of a disclaimer on how personal a transition is since we are all different and have a different set of issues we must overcome.

Thanks for your budget breakdown. As a 10-year resident of Panama City, your listed costs for service workers is WAY off. A daily cleaner is now $50 for an 8- hour day, including 45 minutes for lunch & break, plus a warm meal at noon. A live-in housekeeper costs $500/month, plus fringe benefits, food, and 2 uniforms. Labour code is strict here, so please don’t run afoul of the law; it could have serious consequences for you. Furthermore you wouldn’t want to get a reputation for exploiting workers.

Typically American mistake #1. Comparing prices to the US market! Sorry that I have to say this. I have no idea on how many times I have said that to Americans. “You aren’t in the USA anymore…” Renting or buying, North Americans getting always ripped off. Small rental apartment and Americans pay $1,500 a month, thinking that they got a good price. What is the average monthly income in Panama? Do yourself a favor and google it. Now come back and tell me if a Panamanian can afford to pay $1,500. A good friend of mine did the same mistake. After listening to me, he pays now $800 for a bigger apartment in the same building. I would say, 60-80% of all skyscrapers in Panama City are empty. Go in the evening, especially in the named San Francisco neighborhood on the street and look for lights in the apartments. And yes. Sure there are apartments owned by people who don’t live 12 months here or left already Panama who can’t sell the overpriced apartments! Properties in Panama are for many years on the market. The market is just flat dead. Whose fault? High prices and owners who paid already too much and asking another $50,000 more to make a good business… Sorry. Won’t happen in Panama. I live here in Panama for 4 years now. Same story every where I lived. Americans don’t do their research and trust real estate agents (no way - doesn’t work like in the USA!) or worst - listening to scammers from the USA who do business that way in Panama! Stay away if you can’t do it yourself. What I mean? Walk around and ask around in the neighborhoods or villages. People often know a place to rent. Tell them your budget. You will see that you can safe a lotof money. Mistake #2: Forgetting the basic property buying rules. Like: Hospital, doctors, supermarkets, transportation services available? I had a lot of Expats getting stranded after the pandemic in a beach village where everything was 12km / 7 miles or more, away. No supermarket, no doctor, no hospital in reach without driving to Las Tablas. The next bigger place. Results? Complaining North Americans who thought that the nice view is worth the overpriced properties. 60% of the properties for years - on the market. Honestly? I can’t eat a nice view, and a nice view isn’t replacing a hospital. And yes. Not everyone likes to live like I do. I do not live in a gated community. I live in Panama - Panama style! Means. I have no air conditioning in my rented 2 bedroom house. My neighbors are Panamanians. I’m surrounded by people who were born here. Rent I am paying? $350 a month. Not on the beach. Why? After living 10 months on the beach, with people showing up on Friday afternoon and staying until Sunday evening, oversized loudspeakers in the cars, I just couldn’t stand it anymore. My rental house is 3 minutes from the beach away. I still can hear the music some times. But only if everything is quiet in my street. And by all means. The people who have $4,000 to spend in a month, I am sure, there are other nicer and safer countries to live in. Europe for example. Spain, Italy, Portugal.
