  • This video explains that traditionally, yoga is for everyone. Many people think yoga is not for them because they are stiff or not able to practice asana, and they feel that they can hurt themselves. This is not true. Yoga does not discriminate between flexible or stiff bodies. The first thing yoga teaches you is to accept yourself, where you are right now. We are often taught to compare ourselves with others, but in a yoga class, you should not be watching what others do. The "union" in yoga means union with yourself, redirecting your awareness within, connecting to your roots, to your heart and soul. So if you're genuinely looking for your wellness, understand that yoga is about YOU. By comparing yourself to others you distract yourself, which makes you depressed and disappointed, or it fails to motivate you. If flexibility was the yardstick for yoga, then all the world's gymnasts would be great yogis or yoginis. Yoga is not about flexibility - it's about equanimity, integrating your mind and body. If you are only able to lift your leg halfway, then just bring your mind into THAT action. Integrate your mind with the physical movement through the breath. That will help to bring the solar and lunar energies - the physical and the mental - closer, which helps redirect your energy within. Practising asana with acceptance and focus on yourself means you're training your senses because you're redirecting your awareness to the body and breath through different movements. That helps you to be relaxed and grounds your awareness, which motivates you to go further, because you feel that it's working for you. So you have to have flexibility in the mind instead of flexibility of the body. Flexibility of body is important, but flexibility of mind is the base ... which comes by integrating the mind and body, where you are right now. Accept yourself as you are, and be mindful so that your practice can lead you to raise your consciousness. Then you will experience your holistic health and well-being. So don't do violence to yourself by comparing and competing with others.
