- Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. Since the beginning, the format on the American mah jongg card used colors, letters, and numbers to describe valid hands for the given year. In this video, I use generic and timeless tools that decipher the card.

I've been learning to play Wright Patterson, but there aren't too many opportunities to play that version, so have been watching your videos to learn to play American mah Jongg. thank you so much for all your work! My question is: Can you jokers for Flowers or Dragons, assuming the hand calls for 3 or 4 flowers or dragons? for example on the mock card in the 13579 category, the second or third hands from the bottom.

For the year … do all of the tiles have to be the same suit?
The colors do not correspond to a suit (i.e., red=craks, blue=dots, green=bams). The change in color for a given hand means a change in suit but you, the player, determine which suit will be used for each color.

I am new to the game and learning how to read the score card. Question, ex-on the score card 2023 under Conservative Rn, 4th line down, the pattern is 1 22 333 4444 5555. On the score card it shows three different colors for the numbers. For example, the 4444 are in red. Do I have to specifically play the red-craks tiles for the number 4s or can I play another suit just as long as the tiles number suit matches in the Kong?
The colors on the card do not tell you which suit to use, you get to decide which suit in your hand represents the blocks on the card for a given hand. In other words, when there is a change in the color on the card, there needs to be a change in suit in your hand. One color on the card means you need to use one suit in your hand. Two colors on the card means you need two suits in your hand. Three colors on the card means you need three suits in your hand.
For example, Consecutive RUn #4 the blocks in green could be Dots, the blocks in red could be bams, and the blocks in blue could be cracks.

Since American mah jongg publishes a card with ~60 valid hands, there are 8 jokers that can be used to help players complete their hand. The jokers can be used in blocks of three or more identical tiles. For the hand at 13:09, jokers can be used for the Flowers or the Green Dragons.

Brand new to the game. Had one lesson so in the very early stage of learning. Can you use a "joker" to complete a run of dragons or flowers when you need three or more ?
I think you just answered my question......yes , as long as they are not singles or pairs.

It sounds like the flowers are not considered a suit if your line has 3 suits and flowers, correct? You would want flowers plus 3 additional suits?
Flowers, like Winds, are always blue and can be used with any suit. For example, Evens #4 FF 22 44 Cracks 6666 Dots 8888 Bams - three colors three suits represented.

Yes. Any block of three or more identical tiles can use jokers regardless of the tile.

I get confused reading the card. In the examples you were showing you were coinciding the tiles with the numbers on the display but when I’m attending classes they say you can use any number as long as it’s doesn’t say you have to use those exact numbers. I get confused with that.
The modeling strips used in this video are teaching tools. Look in the parenthesis for flexibility and limitations with numbers and suits that can be used for a given hand.

With the mock-American mah jongg card, you can use any year. The NMJL has a category for the current year. Players do not have the option of choosing any year, they must use tiles to fit the combinations on the card. For example, the Year category for "2021" has combinations using 1s, 2,s, Zero/White Dragons, Winds, and Flowers.

When you say any numbers of jokers, does that mean for for a kong you can have 3 jokers and a tile? You can't just have 4 jokers an you?
A block meant to be three or more identical numbers can use any number of jokers. For example, if Year #1 FF YYYY DDDD DDDD, could be FF 2020 Cracks GGGG JJJJ (G=Green Dragon; J=Jokers and therefore White Dragons).

Great video series, Michele. Thanks! On the Jokers...is the rule that you must have at least one of the tiles for the set and then can fill the rest with either matching tiles or jokers? For example, is it okay to have an "8JJ" or must it be an "8J8"? Is it acceptable to have all three of a pung be jokers ("JJJ") to stand in for "888"?
Any number of jokers can be used in a block intended to be three or more identical tiles. For example if 888 is required, JJJ can bee used.

Yes, you can use any number of jokers in a block of three or more identical tiles (i.e., pung, kong). In other words, you cannot use a joker as a single tile or as part of a pair(i.e., 22, 2023, NEWS)
How does the player know which hand they are supposed to be creating?
Everyone plays a little differently. I play and teach with an adaptive style to optimize multiples so I gather tiles that support them. When I run out of discards I look for a hand that uses most of my tiles. These lessons are arranged using a phased approach so keep watching the videos in this playlist. There are two other playlists that will help, one has strategies and the other has skill builders.

"R"=red dragon(s) only, "G"=green dragon(s) only - any notation for white dragon(s) only?
Historically, the league uses R for red dragons and G for green dragons only when they require those particular dragons. For example, R for red dragons is used when combined in a hand with North and South. They use G for green dragons when combined in a hand with East and West. Otherwise, dragons correspond to suits; white with dots, green with bams, and red with cracks. This is when they use a D for dragons and they will be shown in one to three colors to show the suits that must be represented and how they relate to the other tiles in the hand. The special use for white dragons is that it is converted to a zero for use in Year hands and when that happens, it is neutral and no longer corresponds to the dot suit.
For the year 2022 can I use a jokers for the 2’s
No; jokers cannot be used in a block with singles or pairs.
Hi Michele! Your videos are so helpful to my friends and me. Our set has four flowers with black characters, 4 with red, 4 with the season in black, and 4 in red. I understand that the seasons are also flowers and numbers next to the character/season do not matter. But if I have an hand calling for FF, do I have to use the same color characters or season? For instance, could I use a black season and red season? A black season and red character?

@@BuHiFoodie a discard can either be claimed to make a new exposure or declare mah jongg. Previous exposures are locked in :)
@@MAHJLIFE so let’s say I have revealed a pong with 2 six dots and a joker. A 6 dot is later discarded. Based on your previous answer, I can not pick up the 6 dot, right? If I draw a 6 dot, could it replace the joker?

When you have exposures on your rack (before you mah jongg) do those exposures have to be in exact order as they are on the card?
No, exposures do not need to be placed in order to match the order on the card during the game. It is courteous to arrange the exposures to match the order on the card after declaring mah jongg so the other players can quickly validate the hand.
To make the Kong of dragons, could you use jokers?

If you have a pair, can you add a joker
Yes. You can use any number of jokers with a block of three or more identical tiles. For example, a pair of 2 Dots with a joker is not a pair with a joker but it is three identical tiles (i.e., pung).
What about the seasons?
All mahjong sets come with Flower tiles. There are two sets of Flowers, Seasons (1 SUM, 2 SPR, 3 AUT, 4 WIN) and Flowers (1 PLUMB, 2 ORCHID, 3 CHRYS, 4 BAMBOO). For Asian styles, the Flowers are bonus tiles and are not part of the 14-tile hand. If a player has a Flower and it is the same number as their seat for any given hand (1 EAST, 2 SOUTH, 3 WEST, 4 NORTH), they will get additional points if they win. For American mah jongg, the Seasons and Flowers together are called "Flowers". The numbers and letters on the Flowers do not matter. If a hand calls for a Flower, indicated by an F, any Flower tile will do. Many times, sets will come with extra Flowers, Jokers, and blank tiles. Just be sure that you use only 8 Flowers and 8 Jokers.
One of the differentiators of American Mah Jongg is that Flowers are not bonus tiles, they are components of ~45% of the hands on the reference card. Dig Deeper: mahjlife.com/wiki/handling-flowers-article-12/
Can Mah Jongg be played with just 2 people
Yes, the league says players sit across from each other and the missing players are simply skipped. Players alternate as East and the preliminaries (i.e., building walls, rolling the dice to break the wall) should be done as normal and omit the Charleston. East discards to start the game and players pick and discard until one player has a mah jongg. There is another version with more complex rules and scoring called Siamese Mah Jongg. Why dots for the year??
Year blocks (i.e., 2023) can be any suit.The White Dragon when used in a year block is a zero so no longer corresponds to dots and can be used with any suit.

White Dragons are used as a zero in a block of Year tiles and the number tiles tiles must be the same suit. For example, NN EEE 2021 (Dots with a White Dragon) WWW SS; FF 2025 (Bams with a White Dragon) EEEE WWWW; FF DDDD (Red Dragon) 2060 (Cracks) DDDD (Green Dragon).

When we are able to choose the Dragon, it is represented with a D. Sometimes, the league will require a specific Dragon which will be represented as a G for Green Dragon or R for Red Dragon. An example on the 2021 Card is FF NNNN RRRR SSSS or FF EEEE GGGG WWWW.
