  • Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. Every game of mah jongg begins with the clickety-clack of mixing the tiles and the deal. In this video, I demonstrate the process.

    Your videos are terrific. They are the only ones, as a Beginner, I can understand. It seemed like you did not break the wall for the player across from you, or did I miss that? It seemed like that player still had the 19 tiles in his wall plus the 12. Thank you, and thank you for speaking clearly and loudly and taking things step-by-step.

    Michele - at the end of distributing the tiles, can East pick up the 1 & 3 at the same time, or must they do it separately? Thank you.

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After everyone has taken three sets of two stacks (4 tiles), East takes the top first and third tiles at the same time. It is illustrated in Mah Jongg Made Easy on page 11.

    Hi Michele, thanks for your great instructional vids. Just confused about directionality. At 8:10 on this video, you say that the direction for "picking and discarding" (play direction) is clockwise and then at 11:20 you say that "pushing out the wall" (during the dealing section of the game) is clockwise. For each of these, you mention that this is the only thing in the game that goes clockwise. Please help. Thanks

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pushing out the wall and the order of the walls being picked from is in clockwise order. Players take turns in counterclockwise order.

    I am confused about the "one over" concept in building my wall. If I have each player stack their tiles to build a wall 19 deep, my set still has eight tiles left over. Do I then deal "one over" meaning a 20 tile wall instead of 19 tile wall?

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "one over" depends on the type of rack and size of the tiles but it's always 19 stacks long th-cam.com/video/Wyh4Un_H3Us/w-d-xo.html

    Michelle, when I set up the mock table with racks and every rack had an double stack of 19 tiles I still had 8 tiles left over. Was I using tiles that should not have been included?

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alma. It sounds like you included extra tiles that came with your mah jongg set. There should be four each of suited tiles (Dots, Bams, Cracks numbered 1-9,), Winds (North East, West, South), Dragons (Red, White, Green). There should be eight Flowers and eight Jokers.

    If I am going for a Winds and Dragon hand that is FF EE 2222 2222 WW where the two Kong’s of 2s are different suits and any like even numbers and I don’t draw any Easts but get two extra jokers, can the jokers fill in for that pair of EE? Thank you SO much!

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A block of two identical tiles (pair) have to be natural tiles, no jokers. Any block of three or more identical tiles can use any number of jokers.

    The racks included all flowers, jokers and seasons , Is this correct?

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should be eight jokers and eight Flowers . The numbers and letters on the Flowers don't matter for American mah jongg.

    Why do we have leftover tiles after building 4 walls?

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The size of the tiles and the size of the racks are not always a fit. All you need to know is that each wall should be 19 tiles across. If you have left-overs, you may be playing with too many jokers or Flowers - there should be eight of each.

    At 11:38 you curtsy the second wall but the first person you take tiles for on that wall is the player across from that wall. Why didn't you take tiles first for the person to the right of the wall (which in this case would be you)?

    • @MAHJLIFE
      @MAHJLIFE  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Player 2 was next to take tiles because East (i.e., dealer, player 1) got their second group of four at 10:35.
