    Allow me to explain the meaning of the Chinese character in Mahjong:
    東->east
    南->south
    西->west
    北->north
    中->middle
    發->send fortune
    一萬->ten thousand
    二萬->twenty thousand
    三萬->thirty thousand
    四萬->fourty thousand
    伍萬->fifty thousand
    六萬->sixty thousand
    七萬-seventy thousand
    八萬->eighty thousand
    九萬->ninety thousand

    I came here from that 2.5min video. What I learned from it, is that you make pairs.
    This is such a digestible video. I went from "What am I even looking at?" to "I could play a game right now and not have any questions". May have to use that cheat sheet for the chinese characters, but other than that, completely understand how to play.

    • @shellshock10
      @shellshock10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s an easy and solid strat. You make melds which are 3’s or pairs or a flush (sequence) that’s it.

    • @Eidlones
      @Eidlones หลายเดือนก่อน

      @shellshock10 Yes, but the video said nothing else. Not the mechanics of the game, how turns are played out, etc. Just that "you make pairs to win"
      It'd be like saying you play chess by taking the opponents pieces, and that's it.

    The noise of the shuffling reminded me of my childhood. Hearing it again was very evocative. I used to hear it from my bed when my parents (my dad especially) would invite people over to our house in Sai Kung in HK to play after dinner.
    Just hearing it made me remember the warm air, the smell of the vegetation and hearing the cars going past on Tai Mong Sai road

    I wanted to add my praise of this VERY APPROACHABLE tutorial in mahjong but also to share how soothing your voice is. Perfect combination. I also find it incredibly comforting that you haven't memorized all the characters. Yes, both examples you given are correct.
      For that 7 dots (discarded by the player on your left), if another player say Pong, you cannot chow to make (5,6,7). Pong takes precedence.

      @@es330td A Pong is more valuable because it has less options. If you have two "Green Dragon"s, there are only two other stones in the game that will let you complete them: the other two "Green Dragon"s. If you have 4 of Bamboo and 5 of Bamboo, there are four 3 of Bamboo or four 6 of Bamboo, that will complete that combination as a Chow. Thus, a Pong is considered more valuable.
      Why would you not Pong? Well, if you Pong, you reduce your options. Suppose you have 3 of Bamboo, through to 5 of Bamboo, and another 5 of Bamboo through to 7 of Bamboo. If you now Pong a 5 of Bamboo, you are left with 3 of Bamboo and 4 of Bamboo and 6 of Bamboo and 7 of Bamboo. Good luck in getting something decent out of that. (Not the best example, but I hope you get they idea.)
      Is a "Chow" required? If you want to take the tile the previous player discarded, you have to say "Chow". You are not required to make the Chow, however. If nobody Pongs or Kangs, you can just take the next blind stone from the wall.

    Big thanks for such a lovely, simple, and detailed explanation. And for ASMR voice as well :)
    Actually, 🀄 - Red Dragon (someone might remember this symbol from the Red Dragon movie with Hannibal Lecter), 🀅 - Green Dragon, 🀆 - White Dragon.
    And the Winds:
    🀀 - East Wind
    🀁 - South Wind (these both winds are quite important, since they influence the whole process)
    🀂 - West Wind
    🀃 - North Wind
    There are also the extra tiles in some variations of Mahjong:
    Flowers:
    🀢 - Plum
    🀣 - Orchid
    🀤 - Bamboo
    🀥 - Chrysanthemum
    And Seasons:
    🀦 - Spring
    🀧 - Summer
    🀨 - Autumn
    🀩 - Winter

      Just, that depending on the set, the "White Dragon" may be completely white, or may be a blue frame around an otherwise empty stone. That's why some USAnians call them "Blue Dragon". But Alix is right: All you NEED to know is that they can only combine with equals.

    tip: make sure you put your titles in order like example if you have 3 4 5 7 bamboos like that making it easier to read so you dont get confused. Another example is 1,3,6,8 dots. make sure they are in the same suits too! :)

    pong is 3 triplets of same = so can be called when any player discards the tile that makes your 3 triplet set.
    chow is 3 tiles in a sequence = so can only be called if it is abandoned by player on left.
    i think this is because too many sequence tiles exist, so calling chow sequence is restricted to keep the game from ending too easily.
    hope this explains the pong and chow section which i found confusing.

  • @audsdacity
    @audsdacity 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This is SO helpful! Question on Pong and Chow-- is the only difference between those two that Chow can only be used when the desired tile is discarded by the person to your left, and you use Pong for everybody else?

    • @krislane9074
      @krislane9074 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My question as well! I think chow is to the left only? But...Is pong for everyone else at any time, or just to the person on the right( the person who goes after you)

    • @daveshif2514
      @daveshif2514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thats something i didnt understand also, like why is there that distinction if the rules seem to only be different if the player is on the left of you? Like does chow take precedent over pong if both are called or something? If theres no actual difference then why have two different calls?

    • @oxiepidge
      @oxiepidge 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chow (chii) is specifically for sequence calls from your left like 123 and pong (pon) is only for calling the 3rd tile for a triplet and can be called from any seats discard that turn

    • @kudosbudo
      @kudosbudo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oxiepidge With the pong call being made for any discard in theory this could conflict with another players chow call? if so who gets the tile?

    • @Mysha-d5x
      @Mysha-d5x ปีที่แล้ว

      The Chow is a row of three tiles, each of the same suit, with each a number one higher than the previous. Those could be 3 of Rings, 4 of Rings and 5 of Rings.You can only make a Chow on the table if the player before you discarded it, or making the Chow will Win you the game.
      The Pong is a series if three tiles, all three with the same image. Those could be 7 of Wan, 7 of Wan, and 7 of Wan. You can make a Pong regardless of what other player discarded the tile. As a Pong is more difficult to make, it has right of way over a Chow. Yet, a Win is even more difficult, so a Chow Winning the game will take priority. A Pong winning the game will take prioriy over that, but a Closing Pair will have priority over that again.

      Yakuza uses Japanese riichi rules, which is more complicated than what is presented here. Knowing the wind honor tiles matters since depending on what seat you're in and what round it is will determine if you can use them for certain hands, there's a whole hand value system where you need yaku to qualify a winning hand, a points system, etc. You'll want to look up riichi mahjong tutorial videos.
