I enjoy your videos very much especially the ones you do at home, it is easier for me to see your tiles. When you are playing at mah-jongg time I can’t quite see the tiles so easily on my iPad or computer. My game has improved and I love your videos. Thank you so much. I still have trouble picking a hand but with your help I am getting better.
Welcome to the game! I am playing American mah jongg in this video using National Mah Jongg League rules. They publish an annual card with combinations of tiles (hands) divided by categories. Learn more about how to read the card here th-cam.com/video/7WygnpfFbMQ/w-d-xo.html
@@stephaniecanales1148 if you want to play American mah jongg, you will need to buy a new card each year. There are two reasons for this, 1) it keeps the game fresh for avid players, 2) it is a way for organizations to support charities. Are there people in your area who play American mah jongg? I ask because there are many other ways to play mahjong that do not require players to purchase an annual card.
U r greatest I attempted playing at mahjon time several times and hardly anyone wants to play I bought chips too !! If they look at ur belt they don't want to play wíh beginners how can u bull ur belt if no one plays??also they eek to only want to play against their regular players how can u change that !!?? I also can't figure out how to move my c:ups around wen I play ,,,tried all that I remembered
Easier said than done but try not to focus on the color of the belt. No matter the skill level, every player starts with a white belt so it's not relative at first. To move your tiles freely, you need to change a setting. To manually sort your tiles, click the settings icon in the upper right hand corner then click Game Settings under My Account to find the “Auto Arrange Tiles” feature.
In my opinion, Dragons are hot commodities. There are only 3 Dragons in the set and they are required for at least one hand in every category of the card except for the Addition category so they can be a hot commodity. Passing the Red and Green Dragons is fine but only one at a time but pass unwanted number tiles and Winds (if possible) first. During the Charleston, timing is critical so keep an eye on how many unwanted tiles remain after each pass and break up those Dragons because you don't want to get stuck with two unwanted Dragons in a pass.
The National Mah Jongg League does not offer a digital card. It has to be purchased from their website. www.nationalmahjonggleague.org If you are just beginning, I have a mock American Mah Jongg card (goo.gl/MqqaUb) that you can use as you learn. Here is a link to the first video: goo.gl/wGVQLu
Question. I’m playing a concealed hand and I need one more tile. Someone throws it out. Can I pick it for Mah Jongg? Thanks. Just getting back after 25 years! Fun!
Welcome back! If you are ready to win, you can claim a discard to complete the hand regardless of the wait (i.e., single, pair, pung). For example, if I am playing FFF 22 44 666 8888 Dots and need a 2 Dot to complete the hand, I can declare mah jongg if someone discards a 2 Dot.
Thanks, Jennifer! If you want to watch NMJL videos for the current card, look for videos with red, white, and blue thumbnails and the 2019 date stamp at the end of the title. This index might help: facebook.com/download/preview/591529938010786
I'm very new and am confused by a couple of your choices. Why did you keep the red and green dragons for a 2018 hand? Aren't the only applicable dragons the white? Is it because you consider them too valuable to pass at all?
For the Year category the White Dragons are used but there is a Year hand in the Singles and Pairs category (I call it the "Big Year Hand") that uses Red and Green Dragons. Also, they are valuable so I try not to pass them and use them if I can :)
For Random Pull 2, Addition with 5s and 7s had some potential :) I don't play that category though unless I have two or more Flowers and jokers primarily because this year there are double-pungs of Flowers on the card and Flowers are really hard to come by. More times than not, there are other hands that can be played with 5s and 7s like Big Odds and in the case of my choice, Consecutive Run.
@@MAHJLIFE I do not have access to a 2018 card, so HELP PLEASE: How do I find only videos that use your "Mock Card" (so I can understand what you are doing)? Thank you for all your WONDERFUL help.

Best video on Charleston decision-making that I've seen. You are very clear about what you're thinking after each pass. Thank you!

Screen size makes a difference with TH-cam videos. I hope the videos help even if you have to squint :}
What do you mean by category? Brand new to game trying to learn.

Can you use a soap with bams or cracks for the year. Also can you display it or do you have to wait to mahjong?
What chart are you using?
The date stamp in the title of this video is "20180730" so I was using the 2018 NMJL card.
@@MAHJLIFE so when I purchase a set, I would need to purchase a new chart every year?

@@MAHJLIFE Thanks. Would be helpful to neophytes like myself who are jumping around the card to refer to actual category, "singles and pairs".
Why do you not include the last 3 tiles in the last shuffle?
I wanted to keep options so I kept all the even number tiles and wanted only 2 tiles in the optional cross pass.
Unless we are in the East position, we are using 13 tiles, can you do Charleston Modeling with 13 tiles?
I could do that :)
I am rolling the dice now to determine the seat for exercises now. Thanks so much for your input :)
55 and 777s would have made a great addition hand as you didn't need to throw the 1 dote.

On the first one I would have saved the white dragon for a possible 2018 hand. Lots of jokers!
A Year hand would have been a good option but was a little light on the 1s :}
